About Summer Shakespeare

Summer Shakespeare is a local theater company that focuses on high-quality, affordable productions for the whole family. Located in Greenville, SC, they have been performing Shakespeare’s plays since 1995.

The company makes each play more family-friendly by cutting the length of each play and substituting current words for some words that are more obsolete. And while some well-behaved 2-3 year olds have quietly sat through some productions, they tend to see more enjoyment from children around 4-5 years old and up.

Accessibility Preview

Summer Shakespeare wants everyone to be able to enjoy the plays, so every year they offer a free accessible preview performance for those with autism or other special needs. Here are some of the ways they modify the performance for accessibility:

  • House lights stay up
  • Limited use of lights
  • Limited use of loud noises
  • More room to accommodate wheelchairs or those who prefer to stand and move around

These special previews are a great way for families to enjoy theater performances in a more comfortable way.

This year’s accessible preview will be on June 21 at 6:30 pm. If you’re interested, please email margaret@summershakespeare.org. Space is limited and first-come first-served.

Have you ever taken your children to see a Summer Shakespeare performance?
