Make Mornings Easier at Eggs Up Grill: A Family Favorite Across South Carolina

Posted on |

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and if that’s true, then you can’t afford to miss Eggs Up Grill! What started as one restaurant in coastal South Carolina has grown to a statewide chain and beyond—and for good reason. They’re open early, every day of the week, and serving up some of the best food and atmosphere for families across the Upstate.

Read on as local mom, Sarah Burnett, shares why Eggs Up Grill has become one of her family’s favorites!

Eggs Up Grill: At-A-Glance

🗓️ Open 7 days a week
⏰ Early Hours = WIN for early risers!
🧹 Consistently clean establishment
🍳 Delicious breakfast & lunch options
😃 Friendly, fun, and hardworking staff

Eggs Up Grill

Open Early, Every Day, Everywhere!

I don’t know about you, but our kids wake up early. They are usually up and hungry before we are even fully awake! Sometimes we just need someone else to bake the pancakes and pour the coffee, and on those days, we’re thankful to know exactly where to go: Eggs Up Grill.

Image shows Eggs Up Grill sign on restaurant exterior.

They are open early, every day of the week. A lot of breakfast spots cater towards those who can afford to take their morning slowly, and they may not open until 9am or even later. But parents of little ones know what I’m talking about: We don’t have that luxury. Eggs Up Grill opens their doors at 6am every day of the week. Now that’s what I’m talking about!

Most locations stay open until 2pm or later, which means slow risers and early risers alike are able to enjoy their delicious breakfast, brunch, and lunch options. And closing by mid-afternoon gives every person on their team the chance to have real work-life balance, which means their staff are some of the happiest people I’ve ever seen when I’m walking through those doors even on days before the sun’s come up!

Spotlight: Eggs Up Grill in Moore, SC

Eggs Up Grill started as a single restaurant on the South Carolina coast, but it has grown to offer 30 locations statewide and even more across our borders. I’ve been to a few across the Upstate and never had a bad experience, but I’ll paint a picture for what you can expect using our family’s go-to place: Eggs Up Grill in Moore, SC.

Firstly, the doors really are unlocked at 6 am! The restaurant is bathed in morning light, with wall-to-wall windows on every side where they can have them. They can roll down the shades anytime the sun gets harsh, but there is just something refreshing about starting your day dining in the fullness of that natural light.

The next thing I always notice, and always appreciate as a mom, is that the entire establishment is consistently clean. No matter what time we visit, whether it’s right when they open or during a lunch rush, I’ve never seen it in a state of neglect. Let’s be real: Kids are messy, and a lot of places catering to kids end up the same way. But not Eggs Up Grill. They offer a beautifully casual, family-friendly atmosphere that is maintained to a refreshing standard of excellence.

We’re at the point that we have a favorite booth, so I have started just making a beeline towards it. Someone always sees me carrying my baby as soon as I walk through the door, and we’re met with a high chair at the table in seconds. No matter the server, they always greet our children with a big smile and hand them the kids’ menus with crayons.

And my favorite part? They work fast! As soon as we’re ready to order, they’re ready to take it. Our drinks are out before we know it, and the food never takes more than a few minutes. Parents of little ones, I know you can imagine how much our family appreciates that!

Bites We Love: Mocha, Muffins, and More!

The food at Eggs Up Grill is fantastic. No matter which location we visit, we get a guaranteed good meal. You can check their menu online for pictures and prices, but I’ll go ahead and let you know a few of our favorites!

My husband is a former barista and loves their smooth, chocolatey Mocha Cold Brew. I’m all about pancakes, and the ones at Eggs Up Grill are consistently golden and delicious. The Crème Brulee French Toast is pure magic—topped with custard, drizzled in caramel, and completely indulgent! For our fruit-loving kids, we always order both their fresh fruit and one of their Grilled Blueberry Muffins to split. If you’ve never had it, the Grilled Blueberry Muffin is an easy add-on and totally worth tasting!

We’ve had some of our best family breakfasts at Eggs Up Grill lately, and it has really become one of our family favorites. They also serve some great lunch options, including burgers, melts, salads, and seasonal menu items.

Locations in Greenville & Spartanburg

If you have any doubt about how good this food is, just look at how many locations they’ve opened across the Upstate! Eggs Up Grill is growing for a reason, and we’re so glad there are so many places we can find them.

Discover River Place Park: A Natural Hideaway in Lyman, SC

Posted on |

If you’re looking for a peaceful, family-friendly place to enjoy nature, River Place Park is a total find.

Tucked right behind Middle Tyger Library in Lyman, SC, this natural hideaway is perfect for kids who love to run, play, and explore. Read on for a detailed review from local mom and Kidding Around contributor, Sarah Burnett, with everything you need to know to visit with your kids!

View of Tyger River from the bridge at River Place Park.

Quick Look at River Place Park
📍 Located behind Middle Tyger Library
170 Groce Rd, Lyman, SC 29365
🚻 Restrooms & water fountains in library
🚗 Free parking & admission to the park
🕗 Open dawn to dusk, every day
👟 0.3-mile paved, level trail
🌉 Scenic bridge overlooking the river
🌳 Shady trees, benches, and picnic tables
🪏 Loose sand perfect for digging & playing

I was reminded of River Place Park on our family’s last visit to Middle Tyger Library. We were checking out their Seed Library, and as my kids ran around the Children’s Section, I realized it would be great if they could get their energy out. I asked the librarian what the nearest park would be, and she suggested River Place Park—literally in the library’s backyard!

Unless someone tells you about it, you would likely never discover this park. River Place Park is not visible from the street or even from the library entrance, and I had managed to completely forget about it until the librarian reminded me it was there! My kids and I headed straight for the door and took off around the side of the building to enjoy the natural escape that awaited us.

Getting There & Parking

River Place Park couldn’t be easier to access. Just put Middle Tyger Library into your map app, and park in their free public parking lot. Then walk around the left-hand side of the building to find a short staircase at the edge of the lot, which will lead you downhill into this quiet park.

For families with strollers, wheelchairs, or other accessibility needs, you can also go back down the driveway to the sidewalk that runs along Groce Road. This sidewalk will lead you directly into the park as it wraps around the back of Middle Tyger Library.

While the park is open dawn to dusk, I highly recommend visiting during the library’s open hours. That way, you can take advantage of their clean public restrooms and water fountains during your visit. You could even check out a book to take with you into the park!

Middle Tyger Library Hours:

  • Monday–Thursday: 9 am –8 pm
  • Friday: 9 am – 6 pm
  • Saturday: 10 am –5 pm
  • Sunday: 1–5 pm

Nature Play, Trails, and Riverside Views

If you follow the stairs from the library into River Place Park, you’ll find yourself at the top of a grassy hill overlooking the rest of the park. It is largely hidden from both the library and the street, but you might see the occasional person passing through on the walking trail if there aren’t already families enjoying the park. There are mature trees providing shade all over the place, several picnic tables scattered across the grass, and lots of fun terrain where kids can run, jump, and explore!

A wide, natural trail leads down the hill to your right, and then wraps back around to put you next to Tyger River. This is where you’ll find one of our family’s favorite features in River Place Park! Between the trail and the water, there’s a little hill covered in loose sand. My kids could have spent forever digging and playing on this one hill! When we visit again, I’m definitely bringing our sand toys!

Children playing in the sand at River Place Park.

There are a couple benches next to the hill, so you can easily supervise your kids without getting sandy yourself. Keep a sharp eye for water safety this close to the river. Because my kids are younger, I told them that they had to stay on the side of the hill closest to the benches.

The sand was entertaining enough for them, but older children will have even more fun running back and forth to the water! After we left the sand, my kids and I also got to enjoy looking for critters along another (less sandy) section of the riverbank.

For families using the accessible entrance to the park, you’ll be starting at the trailhead of the 0.3-mile walking trail, which is fully paved and level. This trail takes you right across the rushing Tyger River on a picturesque metal bridge, and it’s hands-down one of the best photo spots in River Place Park! Across the bridge, the short trail concludes at a small water treatment facility, just a little farther along Groce Road from where you originally started.

Tips for Visiting River Place Park with Your Family

  • Visit during Middle Tyger Library’s open hours.
  • Use the library’s restrooms before you go down to the park. Even if the kids say they don’t need to go, we all know how the sound of rushing water can change that!
  • Keep a sharp eye on kids around the water. Tyger River isn’t very wide, but it is rocky, rushing, and deep not far from the shoreline, so don’t let kids play unsupervised.
  • Pack water bottles, bug spray, and sand toys for the most fun by the water.
  • Pack a picnic, bring a lawn game, or borrow a book to spend a day in the shade.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for the water, sand, and trails.

Our Thoughts: Review of River Place Park

River Place Park is one of those under-the-radar spots that feels like such a pleasant surprise to discover. Whether you’re local like us or just passing through town, it’s a wonderful place to unwind, let kids roam, and enjoy a little slice of nature in Spartanburg County. Next time you visit Middle Tyger Library, don’t forget to take a few minutes (or a few hours!) to wander down to the river. You won’t regret it!

Our Favorite Nature Walk Near North Myrtle Beach: Vereen Memorial Gardens

Posted on |

Inside: A parent review of Vereen Memorial Gardens with everything you need to know to plan your visit for a nature stroll near North Myrtle Beach, SC.

When you think “family beach trip,” your mind probably goes straight to sandy feet, ocean breezes, and maybe a boardwalk snack or two. But on our latest beach trip, we discovered a place that completely surprised us—Vereen Memorial Gardens, just 15 minutes from the heart of North Myrtle Beach. This 115-acre nature preserve offers peaceful walking trails, towering trees, marsh views, and endless opportunities for wandering in wonder!

Vereen Gardens

If you’re looking for something totally free, wildly beautiful, and the perfect fuel for your child’s sense of adventure, then Vereen Memorial Gardens needs to be on your beach trip bucket list.

We’ve got everything you need to know about visiting this place of beauty with kids in tow!

Getting There & Parking

We found Vereen Memorial Gardens easily using GPS—it’s only a short drive from North Myrtle Beach, right before you cross the border into Calabash, North Carolina. The entrance is clearly marked, and there is a convenient Visitor’s Center right there in the parking lot.

Image shows visitor's center at Vereen Memorial Gardens.

This parking lot is the first of two free options. This one offers convenient access to the Visitor’s Center with trail maps and information, public restrooms, and trailheads for both of the main trails running through the Gardens. The second option is at the far end of the main road through the Gardens, which will put you right by the boardwalk and Intracoastal Waterway.

We wanted to get our bearings, so we opted to follow the main road and park at the far end of Vereen Memorial Gardens. I recommend that option for anyone who will be hiking with little ones like we were. This parking lot puts you right next to the Boardwalk Trail, which is the easiest to navigate with a stroller, offers instantly gratifying views of the waterway, and—if you do decide to hike the full Gardens—puts the restrooms conveniently at the halfway point.

Image shows Boardwalk Trail at Vereen Memorial Gardens.

The Trails: Choose Your Own Adventure

There’s no need to be a serious hiker to enjoy Vereen Memorial Gardens. This place is just one family-friendly option after another! Whether you’re carrying a baby, pushing a stroller, juggling toddlers, or keeping up with an eager older child, you are guaranteed to find just the right adventure for your family!

There are three main trails: the Boardwalk Trail, the Blue Trail, and the Red Trail. All these trails are wide and mostly level, perfect for beginners. The Boardwalk Trail is less than half a mile in length and in full sun. The Blue Trail and Red Trail are about 1 mile long each, running down the length of the Gardens on either side. They connect to the Boardwalk Trail at one end and to each other at the Visitor’s Center by the entrance. The main trails are also part of a recognized TRACK Trail in the Kids in Parks program, which allows kids to earn prizes for logging hikes like these.

Image shows TRACK Trails sign from Kids in Parks for Vereen Memorial Gardens.

The Blue Trail, Red Trail, and all other trails in Vereen Memorial Gardens have natural surfaces and are almost entirely shaded. There are countless smaller trails branching off the Blue and Red Trails, and these tend to be narrow and have some more difficult terrain to them. All the smaller trails eventually lead back to either the Blue Trail, Red Trail, or main road, so you can easily explore without ever getting lost!

Our family managed to push a double umbrella stroller with ease over the boardwalk, and there were only a few places where we had to navigate around roots or sandy sections on the Blue and Red Trails. When we wandered onto some of the narrower trails, we did have a more difficult time with the stroller and found ourselves carrying it in a couple spots.

Image shows sandy shore on Intracoastal Waterway at Vereen Memorial Gardens.

Sights and Highlights in the Gardens

There were so many beautiful sights to absorb throughout the Gardens, and the natural beauty is one of the biggest reasons this is one of my new favorite places around North Myrtle Beach!

On the Boardwalk Trail, you’ll find yourself looking out at a lush salt marsh and the gorgeous Intracoastal Waterway. There is a fishing pier about midway through the Boardwalk Trail, and it’s a great spot to stop and take in the view, maybe even get some family photos together. Our kids loved looking through the railings at crabs skittering below and a heron hidden in the reeds, and there is even a way to get down on the sand here if you’d like to walk along the shoreline for a bit.

Near where the Boardwalk Trail and Red Trail meet, you’ll also find a little area that feels like magic in the marsh… The wishing trees! Visitors to Vereen Memorial Gardens are welcome to write wishes on seashells and hang them on these trees as ornaments. Most of the shells are oysters, readily available on the sandy shore off the Boardwalk Trail, but you could also decorate a shell that you find anywhere else at the beach and bring it here to add to the magic.

The trees along the Red and Blue Trails are mature, and you’re truly walking through the woods. You will love the diversity of the trees to encounter, as it makes you feel like every twist and turn leads you to a whole new place of enchantment. We could have spent hours exploring all the narrow trails without our stroller, and we definitely plan to come back again and again as our kids get older to let them explore to their hearts’ content!

When to Visit Vereen Memorial Gardens

Vereen Memorial Gardens is open year-round, 7 days a week, from 7 am to 7 pm. If you like to visit the beach in the off-season, this is absolutely one of the best possible places you could go to enjoy your time in the area! However, even in the heat of summer, I have to highly recommend this place just because it is so much cooler under the shade of all the trees, and it’s a beautiful way to do something different after spending several days on the sand.

My personal favorite time to visit—without a doubt—is springtime, when the azaleas are in bloom. It’s called Vereen Memorial Gardens for a reason! And if you visit in spring, you’ll find out why. Azalea bushes line a large section of the main road in Vereen Memorial Gardens, and it is the kind of beauty that just makes your heart feel full to behold.

Image shows pink azaleas in full bloom at Vereen Memorial Gardens.

So when should you visit? The answer is NOW!

John’s Cafe & Catering in Spartanburg, SC: Celebrating 30 Years of Hot Plates and Hometown Hospitality

Posted on |

There are pancake houses, and then there’s John’s. Located on Spartanburg’s eastside, John’s Cafe & Catering is where pancake dreams come true—served hot, fluffy, and bigger than your average dinner plate!

It’s no exaggeration to say this family-owned spot serves up some of the best breakfast in Spartanburg County. With loyal regulars, that small town feel, and food that hits all the right notes, it’s easy to see why this place is beloved…and growing! That’s right, John’s will be opening a second location in Chesnee, SC by the end of 2025.

The Pancake Place That Knows Your Name

When you walk into John’s Café & Catering, you’ll be greeted by the same smiling faces. This is a family-owned and operated establishment, and I have yet to meet a less than delightful member of their team. There are always regulars coming in and out who are greeted by name, and it’s clear this isn’t just a workplace: It’s part of the community.

The owner is John Linder, a local from Cannon’s Campground who turned a lifetime of cooking with family into a full-fledged culinary career. Summer kitchen jobs turned into full-time work as a chef at different restaurants around the Upstate, and before long, he came home to build John’s Cafe & Catering from the ground up. The restaurant has been successful since opening in 1995, and they’re now celebrating 30 years as one of the best breakfast spots around!

The dining room when you first enter has that cozy, time-honored southern feel, with memorabilia and personal touches—including nods to the owner’s culinary journey, family photos, and even a little local history. It’s the kind of place where kids are welcome, regulars gather at “their” table, and newcomers are greeted like old friends.

This main dining room is totally screen-free, with no distracting televisions for those who want to enjoy a quiet meal with their kids. There is an additional dining room in the back with a TV for those who want to catch up on the news or watch a game while enjoying their coffee! This room is also a great for larger groups who may need multiple tables but still want to talk together in the same space. An outdoor dining area is also available, weather permitting, on Saturdays.

Image shows a hearty breakfast at John's Cafe & Catering, including fruit, pancakes, bacon, sausage, and scrambled eggs.

Best Breakfast in Town? You decide.

Dinner is served on Thursdays and Fridays when John’s Café is open later, and those are definitely worth checking out. Their sandwiches, wraps, and Make-A-Plate options with several country favorites for side dishes are delicious. But I’ll be honest, it’s their breakfast that keeps me coming back again and again! John’s opens at 6:30am, Monday through Saturday, so they are always ready to feed us when my kids wake up ready to eat!

Pro-Tip: We’ve never had a wait when we go to eat on weekday mornings, but John’s Cafe & Catering is only open a few hours on Saturdays and closed Sundays—so be prepared for a short wait (usually 15-20 minutes) if you decide to check them out on Saturday morning!

I’ve tried breakfast at places across the Upstate, but no one does pancakes quite like John’s. Their pancakes are huge—think frisbee-sized, thick and fluffy with golden insides that just soak up the syrup or honey. Just one of these beauties is plenty for your average grown-up, and my kids can usually split one or go for a stack of the kid-sized ones.

And I know my kids are not the only ones obsessed with fruit. Well, you’ll be glad to hear that John’s fruit cups are some of the best we’ve ever had! They’re not just afterthought here, but a generously portioned bowl of variety: Our most recent helping included cantaloupe, pineapple, watermelon, strawberries, grapes!

Pair that with their perfectly crispy bacon (don’t come at me, all you chewy-bacon lovers) and a mug of a hot coffee—and you’ve got a breakfast that’s simple, satisfying, and full of flavor! Plus, consider some of their delicious natural honey in your coffee in lieu of the usual sweeteners—it is so good and good for you!

Looking Ahead: New Location in Chesnee

John’s Cafe announced that a second location is officially in the works in Chesnee, SC, and is expected to open by the end of the year! They’re currently hiring for all positions, so if you’re looking for a job with a close-knit team and plenty of community love, now’s your chance to join a place that keeps people coming back.

We’ll update this story when the Chesnee location opens, but in the meantime, it’s worth heading to Spartanburg to taste the pancakes that started it all.

Learn More from the Manager

We got the inside scoop on John’s Cafe & Catering from Jordan Huckabee, one of their super sweet Managers who took the time to speak with us on one of our visits!

What are your post popular menu items? For breakfast, check out the Sunrise Special: 2 eggs, grits or hash browns, 2 pieces of sausage, and a gravy biscuit! For lunch, people love the Calabash Chicken Plate: 5 strips, with 2 sides. Onion rings and mac & cheese are customer favorites for side dishes!

What makes your establishment truly unique? John makes most menu items from scratch, including our HUGE pancakes, biscuits, gravy, sausage, livermush, onion rings, pimento cheese, and chicken salad.

What can customers do to show their appreciation? We love to see positive reviews on Facebook and Google!

Father-Son Team with Family Values

When Will Coates was just a teenager, he started talking about his own pizza restaurant. His dad, Stewart Coates, remembers those early conversations. Stewart has a background in the food business, having served Spartanburg County already as a Zaxby’s licensee for many years. After Will graduated from university in 2023, they knew they were ready to work together and turn Will’s vision into a reality.

After researching franchises and tasting all the options (the best kind of research), Will found his perfect match in Blaze Pizza. He loved the freshness and the flavor, and even more than that, he loved the chain’s commitment to a family-friendly dining experience. Caring for the community is top priority for the Coates family, and it shows in every aspect of this new restaurant.

Image shows Stewart Coates, left, and Will Coates, right, the father-son team behind Blaze Pizza.
Stewart Coates, left, and Will Coates, right, are the father-son duo behind Blaze Pizza in Boiling Springs, SC.

They chose to plant this business in the heart of Boiling Springs, right next door to the Boiling Springs Library. This location is easily accessible for families in the area and makes for a great place to grab a bite and enjoy any of the library’s frequent and free programs.

Both indoor and outdoor dining options are available, with shade umbrellas outside, so families can sit down together in any kind of weather. They also have options for carryout, curbside, and third-party delivery, ensuring convenience for families on the go. And families will be glad to know that the whole restaurant is refreshingly clean—including the single-use restrooms for men and women!

Customers will also have the option to round up their purchases for Folds of Honor, an organization offering scholarships for families of United States military service members. This cause is especially personal to the Coates family, as Will’s younger brother just graduated from The Citadel to join the military. The family has already given $10,000 to this charity themselves, and hope their customers will join them in supporting other military families.

Guaranteed Freshness and Stand-Out Flavors

As for the food itself, the main attraction at Blaze Pizza is the Simple Pie: These are 11-inch pizzas made fresh daily with options for original, gluten-free, or even cauliflower crust! You can also order a 1/2 Pie in-store, which is the perfect size for kids, or a 14-inch Large Pie online only. Then choose from one of their Signature Pizzas or Build-Your-Own using their 40+ fresh topping options!

We got to visit Blaze Pizza in Boiling Springs, SC right before their grand opening and try some of their stand-out flavors! We asked for their top picks and loved every bite:

🍕 Will’s Go-To: Pepperoni & Jalapeños
This pizza had just the right kick! The pepperoni curled and crisped up at the edges, and the jalapeños added enough heat to make each bite exciting without overwhelming the flavor. My husband loved it, and I may have snuck a bite or two off his plate!

🍕 Stewart’s Pick: Ham & Pineapple
Pineapple-on-pizza people, you know who you are! This combo offers the most delicious sweet-and-salty balance. The ham was so flavorful, the pineapple was fresh, and I’m with Stewart on this one—it’s definitely my favorite and I’m sure to order it again!

Image shows Herbivore Pizza at Blaze Pizza.

🍕 King of Color: The Herbivore Pizza
This hands-down is the most colorful pizza on the menu, and it tastes just as good as it looks! This cheese pizza is piled high with brilliant banana peppers, perfectly ripe tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, an olive oil drizzle, and a final flourish of arugula. I could seriously taste every ingredient in every bite, and they blended together perfectly. Highly recommend this one for an elevated experience!

Every single one of their Signature Pizzas looked positively mouth-watering, and their Build-Your-Own toppings bar guarantees you’ll find the perfect flavor to suit your individual tastes! They might have even mentioned something about a Red Vines Pizza? Yum!

Plus, don’t miss the Fast Fire’d Folds, cheesy bread, meatballs, and salads on the menu. Those bonus options make it easy to mix up your meal every time you visit—because, let’s be real, I’ve got the feeling we’re going to be frequent flyers at this awesome new eatery!

Right at Home in Boiling Springs, SC

We are so excited to welcome Blaze Pizza to Boiling Springs! Blaze Pizza might be a franchise, but this location could not feel more local. From the owners’ roots in Spartanburg to Blaze Pizza’s corporate commitment to community, this establishment is one we can all appreciate.

Blaze Pizza is headquartered in Atlanta, GA, with locations all over the southeastern United States and beyond. As a corporation, their Number 1 value is customization. They give every location the opportunity to make the place their own, matching it to the needs of their own community. Will and Stewart are excited to bring this brand-new dining experience to their friends and neighbors, and we could not be more excited to have them!

Anchor Park is a fantastic place to do just that, with ample parking, playgrounds and picnic shelters, multiple ways to access Lake Bowen, and the Lake Bowen Warden’s Office.

Anchor Park Playground

Anchor Park offers some of the best playgrounds in Inman. It is fully fenced all the way around with gates on each side for easy access in and out. There are two different play structures, one for little kids and one for bigger kids, plus a swing set and a few different options for sensory play.

Image shows the central picnic shelter at Anchor Park.

One picnic shelter sits between the two play structures, allowing parents to easily supervise both, and another picnic shelter sits a little farther up the hill, giving a great view of the entire play area. There are a few benches around the park for additional seating, and a paved path loops around it, too, for those who want to walk, bring bicycles or tricycles, or even color with sidewalk chalk.

Men’s and women’s restrooms are conveniently located right outside the fenced play area, and there are trees scattered throughout offering some shady spots where you can get out of the heat. Plus, there is just no beating the incredible wraparound view of Lake Bowen. You’ll be able to observe all the wildlife and water sports right from the shores of the park!

Fishing on Lake Bowen

Anchor Park is the ideal place to access Lake Bowen for water sports. Whether you’re interested in fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or boating, you’re going to find a way to do it right here.

The entire shoreline is perfect for fishing. You can stand right on the rocks and drop your line in the water, take advantage of the two dedicated fishing piers, or even climb down onto a small muddy shoreline when the water level is low enough. Because the lake wraps around the park, it’s not hard to find spots in full sun or partial shade at any time of day, either.

Just remember to purchase a fishing license in advance of your visit for any anglers ages 16 years or older! Fishing licenses are not required for freshwater fishing in South Carolina on Memorial Day or Independence Day. Magnet fishing is always prohibited under South Carolina state law.

Water Sports on Lake Bowen

If you want to get out on the water, this is definitely the place to do it! We’ve seen jet skis, tubing, pontoon boats, and more come on and off the water around Anchor Park.

There is a special access point for paddlecraft, or non-powered watercraft, to enter and exit the lake if you follow the road to the right around the park and playground. There are also two boat ramps across the parking lot if you drive towards the left as you enter the park.

Image shows dock and launch for non-powered watercraft, otherwise known as paddelcraft.

Spartanburg Water requires watercraft permits for both powered and non-powered vessels on Lake Bowen. Permits start at $25 for non-powered vessels and go up from there, with lower prices for locals and highest prices for out-of-state visitors. Permits are only available at the Warden’s Office, so be sure to call in advance at 864.592.2240. Office hours are posted, but exact hours vary as the warden comes and goes.

Boat registration with South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is also required for any watercraft not relying on human power. This means that paddlecraft such as canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards are exempt, but motorized boats will need to be registered. Boat registration starts at about $20 and can be done online.

Image shows a large sign with a few life jackets hanging under it, which can be borrowed by visitors at Anchor Park.

Life jackets are required under South Carolina state law for all children under 12 years old. A limited number of life jackets are available to borrow near the non-powered watercraft dock, but it’s a good idea to bring your own in case these run out.

Explore the Reedy Creek Park, Nature Center, & Preserves in Charlotte, NC

Have you visited Reedy Creek Park in Charlotte, NC?
Local mom, Sarah, visited the park with her 3 kids and they had such a wonderful time exploring the Reedy Creek Park Nature Center, the playgrounds, natural play spaces, trails, and more!
The best part is there’s no admission. Reedy Creek Park is FREE! Read on to learn more about their visit and get all Sarah’s tips to plan your adventure at Reedy Creek Park.

Just a few short miles past the heart of Charlotte, NC you can find Reedy Creek Park, home to the nearly 1,000 acres of the Reedy Creek Nature Center and Preserve. Travel time is 1 hour 30 minutes from Spartanburg. SC, 1 hour 45 minutes from Greenville, SC, and 1 hour 50 minutes from Columbia, SC. Factor in that the park is COMPLETELY free to access, including convenient parking throughout, and this place is a dream come true for your next family excursion!

Reedy Creek Park Nature Preserve playground

Reedy Creek Nature Center

We recommend starting in the heart of the park at the small but worthwhile Nature Center. With ample parking and a short, paved path up to the building, this is a great place to start out with kids of any age and determine which parts of the park you want to explore. You’ll find free, easy-to-read maps, clean restrooms with changing tables, and a gift shop packed with educational materials and fun souvenirs for all ages. The gift shop leads straight into the Nature Center, which is one large room of hands-on exhibits for kids to explore!

When our family visited the Nature Center, we found a microscope projector with a variety of artifacts to check out, including butterflies and scorpions. There were explorer costumes to borrow, a treehouse to climb, a fairy village on display, and even a covered reading nook where quieter children could enjoy a wide selection of nature-themed picture books.

Reedy Creek Nature Center

Our personal favorite spot, though, was the set of rocking chairs—with sizes for both children and adults—facing out wall-sized windows towards a beautiful hummingbird garden. Once you are ready to venture outside, be sure to ask if there’s a scavenger hunt going on! If so, bringing back a completed scavenger hunt sheet can earn your kids a prize.

You will find one of the best attractions in the whole park right outside the Nature Center: a sprawling wooded area that has been carefully curated for young explorers. The main attraction is a set of large platforms and bridges, surrounded by high railings to ensure safety. This structure has only two access points, both of which come out on the same side, making it easy to supervise children without ever having to chase them!

Reedy Creek Nature Park play space

Beyond that, there are multiple climbing areas, all appropriately sized for preschool and elementary-aged kiddos. There’s plenty for older kids in this area, too, with a long and winding balance beam carved from real trees and a huge stockpile of long, thick branches that can be used to build any kind of fort imaginable! Plus a bonus for parents: several benches with clear visibility of the ENTIRE play area.

Dragonfly Pond

The next major attraction at Reedy Creek Park is absolutely the water features, and it could be worth making an entire trip to spend at this area alone! There are two sizable ponds, the larger of which allows fishing and has a handicap-accessible fishing pier.

Rods and reels are available to borrow free of charge from the Nature Center, but a fishing license issued by the State of North Carolina is required for ages 16 & up, so plan ahead to obtain one of those prior to your visit!

In the area surrounding the ponds, there are also several picnic structures, restrooms, a volleyball court, a disc golf course, and a Panthers Play60 playground for all ages! This area has some woods and a lot of sun, so be sure to pack sunscreen if this is where you plan to spend your day.

Play 60 Park in Reedy Creek Nature Center

Sports Complex

The last area that might be most desirable for families is the playground and sports complex right by the entrance. This is the smallest play area of the park, featuring one play structure each for toddlers and older kiddos alongside a couple of swing sets.

Here you will find another volleyball court, as well as a basketball court and what looked to be a couple of baseball diamonds. There are also picnic structures and restrooms available in this area, and the woods provide a nice balance of sun and shade everywhere except the baseball diamonds.

Hiking Trails at Reedy Creek Park

Other features of the park to note are the dog park and the hiking trails. Dogs are also allowed in all outside spaces of the park as long as they are leashed, and I cannot recommend Reedy Creek Park enough for beginning hikers or those hiking with little ones!

All trails are easily accessible from the parking lots scattered throughout the park, and trail lengths range from 1/10th of a mile to 1.5 miles. The park maps available at the Nature Center include details on each trail, specifying not only the length but the difficulty, incline, shade, and points of interest on each one!

All the hiking paths are either natural, gravel, or a mix of both. All-terrain wheelchairs are available to borrow at no cost from the Nature Center on weekdays, but reservations are required at least 4 days in advance to ensure availability. Other than that, only foot traffic is permitted on the hiking trails.

Cyclists and those walking with strollers will want to wait for the greenway currently under construction, with completion expected by Summer 2025!

Hummingbird Festival

An annual highlight at Reedy Creek Park is the Hummingbird Festival held every August! Contact the Nature Center at 980.314.1119 for details on the event and any special activities that may require advance registration. Arriving early in the morning is best to guarantee plenty of hummingbird sightings and special activities could include limited-time exhibits, science experiments, arts & crafts, and storytelling!

Who Are the Spartanburgers?

The Spartanburgers are the newest team in the South Atlantic League of Minor League Baseball (MiLB). The South Atlantic League plays at the High-A level, which is the 3rd highest of 5 skill levels in Minor League Baseball. The focus at this level is to refine players’ competitive skills and prepare them for higher and higher levels of baseball. The South Atlantic League has an impressive history of alumni who went on to the Majors, including Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb, Bobby Bonds, and Nolan Ryan!

Following a name-the-team contest with over 700 responses, final name considerations included the Conductors, Sluggers, and Spartanburgers. The Spartanburgers name was chosen in part for the favorable presentation of team logos and marketing opportunities brought forward by SPARK Business Strategies from Wilmington, North Carolina.

The Spartanburgers join a plethora of food-themed team names in the League, including the Savannah Bananas, Macon Bacon, and Tri-City Chili Peppers.

Brad Caldwell, SPARK founder, remarked, “We really like the uniqueness of the Spartanburgers name and marks, and the ‘50s diner theme provides a cool retro look and feel while offering a whole new marketing concept for the team to pursue. It’s certain to be the ONLY Spartanburgers team name in the nation.”

Matt Perry, Spartanburgers co-owner, was at the opening event and had this to say, “We’ve found that Spartanburg takes great pride in creating a unique identity for itself, from downtown development to new beautification efforts. The Spartanburgers team name fits that mold, in providing a moniker that is unique to the city, the region, and the nation. The ’50s diner theme only adds to that allure. We expect the Spartanburgers to create tremendous exposure for Spartanburg for decades to come.”

Where to Watch the Spartanburgers Play

The Spartanburgers play their home games at Fifth Third Park in downtown Spartanburg, right at the intersection of W Henry St and S Daniel Morgan Ave. We recommend arriving about 30 minutes early to find your best parking options before heading through the gates to your seat.

Image of Fifth Third Park from the inside of the stadium, showing the baseball field, seats wrapping around two sides, and the word Spartanburg emblazoned in large bold on top of the structure.

One of the best places to park is the public garage attached to the stadium off S Daniel Morgan Ave, where you pay $10 in cash or card at the gate. If you use this garage, note that the best spots are on the side farthest from the stadium, as this is where you’ll find the stairwell and elevator which can take you straight to the exit on Level 1. If you use the stairs closest to the stadium, signs will point you to the Ground floor to exit, where you’ll have a longer walk to the entrance located behind Home Plate.

There are other parking options in the blocks surrounding the stadium, some of which are on the grass or where private businesses have opened their lots for after-hours parking. You might be able to find slightly cheaper parking in one of these lots, but be prepared for a longer walk and the possibility of requiring cash!

If you don’t buy tickets to attend in person, you can also stream the Hub City Spartanburgers for FREE on Bally Sports Live, which can also be downloaded as an app. Note that the app is not available for download on all Smart TVs or devices, so you will want to check that you can access it before planning to watch from home this way.

Get Tickets for a Spartanburgers Game

Single-game tickets start at about $15 and go up from there, with some being as high as about $80. Children ages 2 years old and under do not require a ticket unless you want a designated seat for them.

While it’s usually possible to buy tickets same-day, some specialty games are selling out, so definitely buy in advance if there’s one you don’t want to miss! If you do not buy in advance, you can try buying tickets at the gate by the parking garage. You’re more likely to have luck at the gate for weekday games, whereas weekend games do tend to sell out.

There are cool highlights and promotions at almost every single home game for the Hub City Spartanburgers, so just visit the Spartanburgers website to view their full promotion schedule and buy tickets. Choose the game you’d like to attend, and then a map of the stadium will appear. Hover over the different seating areas, and click to see which seats are still available there. Berm seats are usually available even when others have sold out.

Some of the best and cheapest seats are on the berm at the bottom of the map, right near 2nd Base! If you sit there, just know to bring a picnic blanket because chairs are not allowed. And stay alert! While this is a great open greenspace for those with wiggly kids to run around and play, there is not protective netting on this side of the field and there are bound to be baseballs coming your way from time to time.

Group tickets and season tickets are also available for purchase through the website as long as they are available, so consider those out if you haven’t gotten some already!

⚠️ Beware of scams! Always verify the legitimacy of tickets before purchasing them secondhand from anyone. In particular, season ticket-holders can recall tickets they’ve already transferred to another person, so anyone stating they need payment BEFORE transferring tickets is likely NOT a season ticket-holder.

Make the Most Out of Game Day with Food, Merchandise, and Playground Fun!

Baseball is really just the beginning of the fun at Fifth Third Park! Between merchandise, food and drinks, the awesome playground, special promotions, and even spacious clean restrooms… You are sure to find more than you expected on your first visit!

There are two great merchandise stores, one by 3rd Base and one near Home Plate. You’ll find hilarious cheeseburger hats, a variety of t-shirts in all sizes, kids’ toys, accessories, and a variety of souvenirs. You can also shop online at the Spartanburgers website and arrange to pick it up in the park when you arrive.

Limited edition merchandise is popping up a lot this first season, so keep your eyes open for items that are tied to the current game’s theme or promotion! We like to watch the team’s Facebook page for special giveaway announcements, too.

There is an incredibly fun playground for kids with a Hub City theme about halfway between 3rd Base and Home Plate. A stadium employee stands at the entrance to monitor and limit the number of kids in the play area at one time, so you might want to time your visit based on how long the line looks over the course of the game!

One or two more employees float around inside the play area, but it is worth entering with your kids to supervise them directly rather than watching from the sides. Big kids and little kids are playing here alongside each other, and parental supervision goes a long way in making sure everyone stays safe and behaves appropriately.

And don’t even get us started on the food! Outside food and drink is NOT ALLOWED inside Fifth Third Park, so either eat beforehand or plan to come hungry for some of the delicious dining options! In our experience, the only exception we’ve found to this is that you can bring an unopened bottle of water with the label removed.

You will not believe that awesome options scattered throughout Fifth Third Park. You’ll find ballgame favorites like boiled peanuts, cotton candy, hot dogs, slushies, and so much more. The fried pizza from Firebox Corner is delicious, and there’s a Bojangles for us Bo-Berry fanatics!

But you’ve probably already heard what the real attention-grabber is: The biggest Burger Topping Bar in the HISTORY of baseball! There are OVER 100 toppings to choose for your burger, and you can make an entire meal from this one topping bar. We know a lot of people who do just that!

Looking for even more information, or just fellowship around the game? Connect on the Official Hub City Spartanburgs Fan Group on Facebook to ask questions and find friends!

From Bait Shop to Brew Spot: 121 Coffee Is Spartanburg’s Most Scenic Sip

Posted on |

Tucked away just behind WestGate Mall, a quiet surprise awaits: 121 Coffee, Spartanburg, SC’s newest locally owned spot with more to offer than just great drinks. What was once a bait shop has been completely transformed into a serene and scenic coffee destination with family-friendly charm, quiet places to sit, and a whole lot of heart. All it took was one peaceful morning by the water for this to become my absolute favorite place in Spartanburg to slow down and sip a drink.

Image shows a small serene pond with a large white heart swing at its center perfectly reflected in the water, and another pond surrounded by trees in the background behind it.

Robust Flavor in Every Sip

When I walked into 121 Coffee and told the baristas it was my first time there, they were so sweet and talked me through so many of their great drinks and yummy treats! I’d seen many mouth-watering photos of their colorful cold drinks on their Facebook page, but even in the heat of summer, I am—at heart—a hot-coffee kind of girl.

A hot chai latte is my go-to at any new place, ever since I first tried one and felt like I was drinking Christmas in a cup. The girls behind the counter made it fast and fresh, and after just one sip, I knew I made the right call going with their largest size.

121 Coffee carries Roseline’s Oro blend, which brings together beans from Mexico and El Salvador to create coffee with notes of caramel and chocolate in the flavor. You’ll catch those tastes in many of their drinks, especially the espresso, but from what I hear, their cold drinks are also something special: sharp, fruity, and refreshing!

Stunning Serenity That Makes Unplugging a Breeze

I took my cup and headed back outside to find a seat, just taking in the view.

With a fountain in the middle of the main pond and reflections of the surrounding trees and sky, all the water features have such pretty hints of teal and turquoise in every ripple. When I visited, I found a shady spot in the grass on the far side of the pond and just took in the view. I saw geese going into the water for a dip, the tiniest baby turtle sunbathing near the water’s edge, and countless dragonflies dancing over the water. It was genuinely mesmerizing.

The ponds are surrounded by walkways which are primarily gravel, but do include some paved and natural portions. I saw a couple people walking their dogs, one group of friends walking together, and a few families letting children run along the paths. I have little ones, so I made a mental note to bring our chest carrier or all-terrain wagon for easy navigation over the gravel. It was so relaxing to just sit on the grass, but I plan to bring a picnic blanket next time so my kids can relax and play a safe distance from the water.

Patio view at 121 Coffee

Seating Options for Any Occasion

The seating area nearest to the coffee shop is by far the most popular. It features a small deck looking out over the water and family-friendly music playing in the background. White linen curtains in the breeze and tiny string lights overhead created such an atmosphere of class and simplicity in that little space! There are several 4-person tables with umbrellas, perfect for a quick coffee date or even a business meeting. There is also a comfy corner couch and table that was perfect for the large family occupying it during my visit!

A stone’s throw away, near the primary parking lot, you’ll find another cozy seating area with several picnic tables in full sun. This is a gravel area with a great view of the smallest pond, access to the giant white heart swing, and close proximity to the restrooms. The restroom building is so well designed, too! It completely matches the look of the coffee shop, and right outside it sits a classic carriage—another one of the top photo spots at this location!

Adorable carriage at 121 Coffee

On the far side of the ponds, where I spent the majority of my visit, there are scattered benches along the trail. These may be in sun or shade depending on the time of day. The trail wraps around to a small dock where you could sit and dangle your feet over the water. Or, venture a little farther to find a paved platform with picnic tables and umbrellas to beat the summer sun.

Pro Tip: If you want privacy for your coffee date or conversation, head to the farthest seating area across the pond. There tend to be fewer people the farther you get from the coffee shop, and that particular seating area is set back from the water so sound will not carry across the ponds!

The Perfect Event Venue? They Thought of That, Too!

The answer is YES! Not only does 121 Coffee regularly host public events like car shows and holiday celebrations, but you can also rent their incredible outdoor spaces for private events and occasions. Depending on your rental arrangement, you can even take advantage of the fire pits, grills, and pizza oven onsite!

If you love the atmosphere around here, then go ahead and plan your next workout by the water, get-together with the girls, lively family reunion, romantic photo shoot, or anything else your heart desires with our new friends at 121 Coffee!

With a library card through Spartanburg County Public Libraries, you can pick up multiple free seed packets each week—plenty for getting a home garden started. Many branches also include planting guides, displays, or take-home instructions to help you along.

Seed libraries are also available through the Abbeville, Anderson, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, Oconee, and Pickens County library systems across Upstate South Carolina!

Planting Seed Starters at Home

No rush to plant: When you get home with your new seeds, the first thing to know is that there is no hurry to start planting. These seeds do not expire—there’s a best time to plant for everything, but if you miss it, your seeds should be fine to use next year. And if you’re planting indoors or in a greenhouse, there’s really no bad time to do it!

📅 Find the right time: For outdoor gardens, definitely research the best time to plant. A quick internet search with what you’re planting + your city will usually give you the right answers, but I personally love this planting guide from Greenville County Public Libraries! Clemson Extension and The Old Farmer’s Almanac both have great growing guides specifically for vegetables, too.

☀️ Plan your supplies: Plants are at the bottom of the food chain, which means nature really provides just about everything they need! Most plants thrive when they get plenty of sun, plenty of water, and quality soil. Unless you’re already into composting, the soil will be the main thing you need to get from your local garden store.

🏠 Decide whether to start indoors: If you want to start seeds indoors, a cardboard egg carton will be your best friend. Each egg compartment is a mini-container, so fill it with soil and get planting! Once your seeds sprout, you can transfer the whole carton to your long-term garden—whether that’s in the ground, a raised bed, or just a bigger container. The egg carton biodegrades in soil, leaving your plants with a strong start in their new home!

🪴 Consider container gardens: You can plant most seeds straight into the ground, but I highly recommend container gardening for beginners. You can buy or build a fancy raised bed, use traditional pots or grow bags, or even just cut the top half off an empty gallon jug and use that! Containers eliminate a lot of unnecessary challenges like digging holes and weeding, and they make it much easier to separate your plants or relocate them as needed.

🌱 Research plant preferences: After you plant, remember to do an internet search or check your chosen growing guide for plant preferences! They’ll have tips on the positioning, sunlight, and water preferences of your particular plants. Reading up on this will help a lot in getting them to grow!

Why Families Love the Seed Library

Seed libraries are a great low-cost, low-risk way for novice gardeners to try their hand at growing food or flowers with just a library card. They also make great science projects for homeschoolers and other students: Your kids will gain hands-on experience and learn personal responsibility as they strive to help their gardens grow!

Whether you’ve got a backyard, a balcony, or just a sunny window, Spartanburg County’s seed libraries are a simple way to get started—and a wonderful excuse to spend time in the sunshine together! With no pressure to return anything, this community resource just gives you the chance to learn and grow as a family.
