1. Park Hop Your Way through the Upstate

Park Hop is a unique scavenger hunt that allows you to explore the parks throughout Greenville and Spartanburg counties while your children look for clues. Parents must register through the Park Hop website to document their child’s clue collection.

Registration opens on April 15th, 2022, and the scavenger hunt launches with the app on May 13th. Families have until September to submit their clues for their children to win some awesome prizes!

2. Biking in the Upstate

Grabbing a bicycle and exploring the paved paths and trails has never been easier! Dozens of family-friendly paved paths are scattered throughout the upstate, including the 22-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail. Some parks also offer off-road biking trails for adrenaline seekers.

Don’t have a bike of your own? Several bike shops offer rentals, so grab a helmet and catch some wind in your hair as you bike those summer days away around the upstate.

3. Kids Bowl Free!

Strap on those bowling shoes and visit the upstate bowling alleys that offer Kids Bowl Free this summer! This nationwide program allows your children to bowl for free, typically Monday-Friday.

Sparetime Entertainment in Greenville, Paradise Lanes & FEC in Spartanburg, Oconee Lanes in Seneca, and The Big E in Gaffney are offering the program from May through September 2022. Parents must pre-register their children for the days they would like to attend. Adults can purchase The Family Pass to bowl along with them. Registration is open now!

4. Summer Reading

Summer reading programs are offered throughout the upstate to help kids continue their education in a creative and fun way. Library systems in upstate counties offer programs, as well as companies such as Pizza Hut and Scholastics!

Children of all ages can participate, and earn prizes for reading books (audiobooks count!). Parents can help them by tracking books read with a summer reading log or through apps and website submissions. There is nothing better than getting cozy with your kids and reading, especially when prizes are involved!

5. Activities & Celebrations Around Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of summer for many, and there is a multitude of celebrations and season openings to help usher in the summertime!  

  • Swimming spots and waterpark openingsOtter Creek and Discovery Cove are two of several local waterparks that host their opening weekend celebrations over Memorial Day weekend! There are also several sandy beaches, swimming holes, and waterfalls to check out throughout the upstate that begin to draw a crowd in May as the waters warm up.
  • Fountain Inn Splash PadNothing feels better than cooling off running through a splash pad! This free splash pad is located on the main street in Fountain Inn and opens as the weather begins to warm.
  • Memorial Day Parades and Summer Celebrations can be found scattered across the upstate to honor the memories of those who served in the military. Many will also be celebrating the start of summer! Celebration schedules will begin to update closer to May, so be on the lookout for updates.
