Looking for a new children’s book? Local author, Amanda Derrick, has written a story called In Time Butterfly. KAG Contributor, Kristina Hernandez, got a chance to review this children’s book which tells the story of two little caterpillars trying to become butterflies.
About In Time Butterfly
In Time Butterfly is a sweet little story about two caterpillars who are lifelong friends and encourage each other on their journeys to become butterflies.
Author Amanda Derrick lives in Greenville and the book is based on her real life adventures with her kids in the butterfly garden at her home. Paul, a Polydamus Swallowtail Butterfly, and Mona, a Monarch butterfly, live on pipevine and milkweed plants in a garden together. In Time Butterfly follows their lives as caterpillars as they try to become what they are destined to be: butterflies.
The conversations between Mona and Paul are cute as Mona encourages Paul to do what he’s meant to do, even as he tries to grow as big as Mona and eat the same leaves as she does – which doesn’t exactly go as planned.
The illustrations are bright and colorful, with plump little caterpillars who have bright eyes and cute smiles. Jessica Tukaj, Amanda’s college roommate and illustrator of In Time Butterfly, designs the pages to be eye-catching, something that my kids really enjoyed while reading it.
The story-line weaves through excellent life lessons in the relationship between Mona and Paul – ones that involve staying true to yourself, choosing to do what you are intended to do, and encouraging others, no matter what stage of life they are in. I love these themes and Derrick did a wonderful job tying them together in a cute children’s book.
