Playgrounds & Play Areas with Rubber Mats (Perfect for Babies & Toddlers)

Posted on | No Comments

My youngest child is 10 months old, crawling and climbing all over the place, and trying desperately to walk and keep up with her brothers. When we want to get outside we head for playgrounds that will allow her to get out of the stroller, crawl around and climb.

There are several playgrounds around Greenville and Spartanburg that have soft, squishy rubberized ground cover, which are wonderful places for crawlers, new walkers, and daring climbers. But beware–this type of ground cover can get hot in the sun, so always feel it before putting baby down.

Playgrounds with rubber ground cover

Located at the Pavilion Recreation Complex, the Boundless Playground has a combination of wood mulch and solid, rubberized ground cover. It also has both shady and sunny areas. I was able to let my baby crawl around, but I had to keep a close eye on her, as she found plenty of wood chips to eat. While the rubber ground in the sun did get hot, the playground equipment and the ramps are coated and cool to the touch. This playground is not fenced in. There is a designated 2 to 5 year old play area, shaded picnic tables and restrooms.

The playground at Greer City Park is located to the right of City Hall. There is very little shade over the play area, however, there is a large, covered picnic shelter right next to the playground, as well as public restrooms. The play equipment is geared toward 5 to 12 year olds, but my little ones found plenty to do.

Right in front of the Greenville Zoo, the playground at Cleveland Park is one of the most popular playgrounds in Greenville. The ground here is more of a “mostly” solid rubberized mulch covering, so there are still bits a baby can put in their mouth. This playground is not fenced in, but there is lots of shade, especially in the toddler area. There is also a shaded picnic area.

Just over left field in Fluor Field is a great little playground with solid rubberized ground cover. This playground is open only during Greenville Drive games and special events.

The playground at Cleveland Park in Spartanburg is a beautiful, large playground with both a toddler area and big kid area. Plus it is completely covered in the squishy, rubber flooring. It can get very sunny, especially in the big kid area, so be sure to test the ground before putting a baby down on it. The toddler area is enclosed, has plenty of low structures for my little one to pull up on, and features a small sand box. Read KAS Contributor Christina’s review of Cleveland Park for more details on this amazing park just a short drive from Greenville.

North Spartanburg Park is another Miracle League inclusive playground, with squishy, compressed mulch ground cover, ramps and paved walkways. This is a very sunny playground and the ground gets hot.

The Miracle League Playground at Sunset Park in Mauldin is an inclusive ADA accessible playground and one of our favorites. It is fenced in except for the entrance with the entire playground covered in soft flooring. Plus the equipment and play structures are perfect for babies, toddler and kids of all abilities. The park also features a rubberized baseball diamond, and bathrooms are close by.

Indoor play areas with squishy flooring

Grandma Betty’s Farm at the Children’s Museum of the Upstate is a reader favorite! The floor outside Granny’s house and surrounding the tree slide is rubberized ground cover. This area also has a soft, padded spot by the windows, perfect for babies to crawl around.

The play area inside Haywood Mall offers a soft floor that’s perfect for crawling children.

Definitely worth the drive, Mountain Play Lodge in Arden, NC is a wonderful indoor play place for kids of all ages. Even the adults will enjoy this place as there are plenty of comfy chairs for lounging while the kids play. Plus the flooring is springy, rubber or carpeted throughout all the play areas! Check out the review of Mountain Play Lodge written by KAG Contributor Robert.

If you’re in the Spartanburg area, Westgate Mall also has a play area with soft flooring for the little ones.

Hands On! Children’s Museum in Hendersonville, NC has a combination of carpet, and rubberized flooring. Read KAG Contributor Lacey’s review of Hands On! Children’s Museum.

Do you have a park or indoor play area with soft flooring to add to our list?
