COVID-19 Interim Guidance for K-12 School Operations

Spartanburg District 1 News & COVID Dashboard

Due to the hazardous driving conditions on many primary and secondary roads, Tuesday, January 18, 2022 will be an e-learning day for all Spartanburg One schools. All sports and school-related activities have also been canceled.

As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Stay safe and have a great day!

Several of our schools have reached a critical point where we are concerned about our ability to provide a safe learning environment for students due to the high percentage of staff members required to isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure. Additionally, we are experiencing a large increase of student absences districtwide. While we have and will continue to make every effort to maintain in-person instruction, the supervision and safety of our students has to be our top priority. As a result, all Spartanburg One schools will temporarily transition to e-learning instruction for Thursday, January 13th, and Friday, January 14, 2022. All schools will be closed on Monday, January 17, 2022, in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, holiday. All schools will resume normal, in-person instruction on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. Your child’s school will provide specific instructions for e-learning assignments and expectations. All after-school activities including athletics and fine arts events will be postponed beginning tomorrow for all e-learning days. Please know that this decision to temporarily transition to e-learning was not made lightly and that we are doing everything in our power to be able to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for all students and staff. Thank you for your understanding as we work to make decisions that are in the best interest of our students, staff, and community.

Dear Spartanburg One Family,
I hope this letter finds you and your family well and thriving.  We have had a great start to the school year.  I could not be happier with our students, teachers, and staff members.  Everyone has worked tirelessly together to ensure an outstanding beginning to the 2021-2022 school year.  I appreciate the parental support we have received, especially in our attempts to have a normal start to the school year.
I am writing to you today to ask for your help.  In recent days, we have seen a steady increase in our Covid positive numbers, resulting in increasing numbers of quarantines. Please take a moment to visit our Covid-19 dashboard for up-to-date information as it relates to the number of positive cases and quarantines that our schools are currently experiencing.  At this very moment, we are experiencing a number of challenges due to the current strain on our resources. A high number of teacher and staff absences have created a shortage of substitute teachers.  As of today, our student absentee rate is approximately 20% districtwide.  When our absentee rate is that high, it is extremely disruptive to the overall educational experience for our students.
I am well aware of the many debates that are occurring at the present time.  Some people don’t want to wear masks.  I respect that.  Some people are afraid of the vaccine.  I respect that as well.  As the superintendent, please understand that it is important to me that you know how much I value your support, especially during difficult times like we are experiencing now. However, our schools are currently struggling day to day right now with managing the current situation. Here is how you can help – please consider allowing your child to wear a mask to school.  Please consider and weigh your options as it relates to the vaccine.  As the superintendent, I am saying to you that it would greatly help our teachers and school district staff if we could work together to slow the spread of this virus at this time.  We feel like we are drinking water from a fire hose right now and we desperately need it to slow down.
Please understand that I am asking this on behalf of our schools.  I am not making any statements of personal belief.  I just need some help right now as we work so hard to keep our students in school and as safe as we possibly can.  To be clear, I am encouraging parents to please send students to school with a mask and to please consider their options for the vaccine.   We are struggling right now with a significant strain on our educational system. I believe your cooperation will go a long way in helping us manage our daily operations and keep our students and staff in school.

We are partnering with DHEC and our Friends at the Upstate Family Resource Center to provide a convenient and accessible COVID vaccine clinic for our Community. All South Carolinians 12+ are eligible. Walk-ins are welcome.October 19, 4-7PM, at the Upstate Family Resource CenterFrom DHEC:“All COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and free. They reduce your risk of getting the virus, particularly in severe forms.”“DHEC continues to strongly encourage everyone 12 and older to get vaccinated. The vaccines are safe and effective and prevent COVID-19. Make no mistake: COVID-19 continues to spread in our communities and those who remain unvaccinated face far greater risk from the disease than rare side effects from the vaccines. If you get COVID-19, not only could you get severely ill and be hospitalized or even die, but you could infect those you love as well as others.”

Spartanburg District 3 News & COVID Dashboard

Due to the icy road conditions and forecast from the National Weather Service, District Three schools will be closed on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
This will be an eLearning day for all students. Students will be able to log on to their devices and expected to complete assignments.
Please continue to be safe and follow your emergency plan. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to put our students’ safety first.

Most of our schools have reached a critical point where we are concerned about our ability to provide a safe learning environment for students due to the high percentage of staff members required to isolate or quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure. Additionally, we are experiencing a large increase in student absences districtwide.

Due to these increases, coupled with the shortage of substitute teachers, Spartanburg County School District Three students will participate in eLearning Days on Thursday, January 13 and Friday, January 14. All schools will be closed on Monday, January 17, 2022, in observance of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. We plan to resume normal, in-person instruction on Tuesday, January 18, 2022.

All after-school activities including athletics and fine arts events will be postponed, beginning tomorrow, for all eLearning days. Your child’s school will provide specific instructions for eLearning assignments and expectations. If they are in need of any school-related materials or supplies, please contact your child’s school for arrangements.

Please know that this decision to temporarily transition to eLearning was not made lightly and we are doing everything in our power to be able to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for all students and staff. Thank you for your understanding as we work to make decisions that are in the best interest of our students, staff, and community.

Effective January 2, 2022, SC DHEC has issued new requirements that may reduce the length of time for Covid-19 isolations and quarantines. Spartanburg County School District Three is required to follow SC DHEC’s directive on quarantines and isolations. Here is a quick summary. However, all DHEC requirements will apply:

If a vaccinated or unvaccinated student or staff member tests positive for Covid-19, they must:
1) Isolate for five days.
2) If they have no symptoms or symptoms have improved, they may return to school/work on Day 6. However, they must wear a mask for the next five days.

If a student or staff member was exposed to a positive case and considered to be a close contact:
1) If the close contact in question is vaccinated, they do not have to isolate or quarantine. However, they must wear a mask for 10 days from the initial exposure.
2) If the close contact in question is not vaccinated, they must quarantine through Day 5. They can test Day 4 or after, then return with a negative test on Day 6. If they do not show a negative test, they can return on Day 10.

Regardless of vaccination status, if they are a positive case or close contact, any student or staff who has had to quarantine or isolate must meet with the school nurse for a Return to School screening. This can be done virtually, by phone, or face to face. All questions can be directed to the student’s principal or school nurse.

District Three is committed to getting our students back in school as quickly and safely as possible. Starting Monday, October 11, Mako Medical will be providing free, drive-thru Covid-19 testing for students and faculty outside at the District Office from 8 am-11 am on Mondays and Thursdays. Currently, this is ONLY available for students and faculty. Those who are registered can pull up to the side entrance of the building for the testing.

D3 Family, Over the past 24-48 hours, District Three has received the following mandates concerning appropriate COVID Prevention and Management:1) Per the South Carolina Department of Education, CDC, and DHEC, face coverings/masks are required for all individuals, students and drivers, while riding school buses, effective August 30, 2021. Extra masks will be available on each bus in the event that a student needs one. 2) Per DHEC, the criteria for identifying close contacts has also been updated. Now, both mask-wearing and physical distance are considered when determining whether a student needs to quarantine. Without masks, students less than 6 feet from an identified positive case must quarantine. With masks, students less than 3 feet from an identified positive case must quarantine. As a reminder, fully vaccinated people (and those verified to have been infected with COVID-19 in the previous 90 days) do not need to quarantine unless they develop symptoms. Spartanburg District 5 News & COVID Dashboard

Due to the effects of this weekend’s winter storm, all District Five schools and buildings will be CLOSED on Tuesday, January 18. We expect many of the district’s primary and secondary roads to be covered with black ice, making them too dangerous for buses, student drivers, or families to travel.
TUESDAY WILL BE AN E-LEARNING DAY FOR STUDENTS
A reminder: teachers and schools will be in touch with students regarding any online meeting schedules or assignments. We appreciate your understanding as safety is always our top priority in District Five. Stay warm, and stay safe!

We’re writing to let you know that due to excessive staff and student absences, because of COVID 19, Friday, January 14 will be a DISTANCE LEARNING DAY FOR ALL DISTRICT FIVE SCHOOLS

Please know:  we did not make this decision lightly.  However, our staff absences have reached a point where we cannot provide a safe, healthy or productive learning environment for our students.  Additionally, today alone, more than 25% of our students were absent from school.  In an effort to keep our students and staff healthy, and to limit the spread of COVID, we believe the safest decision is to close our buildings for in-person instruction.

Your schools and teachers will be in touch with students regarding distance learning instructions for Friday.  There are additional instructions, attached below, from our technology team, should students have problems or need assistance with district laptops.

Also, our Chartwells food service team will be providing free meals tomorrow to any student who needs it at 3 different locations:  Duncan Elementary, River Ridge Elementary, and Wellford Academy.  Meals will be available, for pickup only, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

One final note:  we are aware that inclement weather is forecasted for District Five and the Upstate this weekend.  Monday, January 17, remains a district holiday.  We will be monitoring the weather, and should there by closures or delays beyond Monday, we will let you know immediately.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and please stay safe!

District Five Parents and Families,
Happy New Year!  We’re looking forward to welcoming our students back to school tomorrow, Tuesday January 4!
As we prepare for students to return, we are aware that cases of COVID-19, and specifically the Omicron variant, are on the rise in our community, and across the state and nation.  It is likely that we will continue to see positive cases in our schools, but it is our hope that we can keep students in school, while protecting the health and safety of everyone as much as possible. As students and staff return to class, we have some important information to share with you.  DHEC, as well as the CDC, have released new guidelines regarding COVID-19 when it comes to isolation and quarantine for both those who are infected, or those considered close contacts of anyone positive for COVID.
If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19:

  • Must isolate for at least 5 days since symptoms started (return to school on day 6 at earliest) – AND –
  • 24 hours since the last fever without using fever-reducing medication – AND
  • Symptoms have significantly improved (students must have a parent note confirming all criteria met)
  • As required by DHEC, students and staff who choose to return after day 5 MUST wear a mask for days 6-10

For any student or staff member considered a close contact of someone with COVID-19:

IF UNVACCINATED

  • Must quarantine for 5 days, and may return on day 6 if a COVID-19 test is NEGATIVE (home tests cannot be accepted) – AND – no symptoms reported.
  • If you have questions about testing, or how to receive one, please contact your school nurse. The test must be taken no earlier than day 4, and quarantine must continue through day 5 (return on day 6). As required by DHEC, masks MUST be worn through day 10. If the close contact does not present a negative test, they must quarantine through day 10.

IF VACCINATED:

  • No quarantine required (as long as symptom free)
  • DHEC recommends test on day 5 (even if symptom free)
  • Must wear mask days 1-10 at school
  • If a close contact has received all vaccine doses they are eligible to receive (initial vaccination series AND booster for those eligible – see CDC website for booster eligibility) or if the close contact is verified to have been infected with COVID-19 within the previous 90 days, they do not have to quarantine for any length of time.
  • You can view the new DHEC guidelines, in full, here.  The information is also posted on our district website at www.spart5.net.  As District Five has always required, if your student is experiencing symptoms or has tested positive for COVID-19, please keep them home, and report to your school nurse immediately!
  • It is important that you know:   the health and safety of our students and staff remains our top priority in District Five schools, and we will continue to work to keep our campuses as safe as possible. We look forward to a great 2nd semester!
  • October 13th, 2021

Dear District Five parents and families,
We are writing to inform you of new guidance from the Department of Health and Environmental Control, or DHEC, as it relates to COVID-19 and students who are considered “close contacts” at school.  Effective immediately, as long as a student is wearing a mask, and they remain at least 3 feet away from a COVID-positive student, the masked student DOES NOT have to quarantine. Here’s what this means:  any masked student who remains properly socially distanced from a COVID-positive classmate WILL NOT be sent home or quarantined, as long as they are not experiencing symptoms. If a student is unmasked, and determined to be within 3 – 6 feet of a COVID-positive student for 15 minutes or longer, then quarantine rules still apply. This new guidance does not change quarantine rules as it applies to teachers and staff. Spartanburg District Five Schools still strongly encourages all parents and families to closely watch your children.  If a child is feeling ill, or exhibiting any COVID symptoms, please keep them at home. We appreciate your patience and understanding as the health and safety of our students and staff is always our top priority in District Five!

Dear District Five Parents and Families,
As we near the close of our 3rd week of school, I want to thank you for your patience and partnership as we’ve navigated a difficult and unique start to this school year.  As I’ve visited classrooms and walked the halls of our schools these past few weeks, I’ve been so proud to see the amazing learning and engagement that is taking place across our campuses.  Our students and staff are excited to be back together, and their enthusiasm shows!  Our teachers and staff are working hard to teach our students and ensure their daily success, and for that, I’m so grateful.
I think we all hoped that this school year would be much different than the last 18 months, and that the challenges of COVID-19 would be mostly behind us.  The reality is:  those challenges are far worse this year.  COVID has had an alarming impact on the health of our students and staff, and put a significant strain on District Five resources.  As I write this letter, more than 10% of our staff members are absent, and a substitute shortage has left us unable to fill half of those positions.  Our student absentee rate this week has hovered just under 20% districtwide:  that’s 1 in every 5 students.  This greatly concerns me for a number of reasons.  When students are not in school, it disrupts the classroom environment, makes it difficult on teachers, and most importantly, it severely impacts student learning.
So, I’m writing this letter with a plea.  WE NEED YOUR HELP.  District Five, like so many other school districts, is fighting an uphill battle, and right now, COVID-19 is winning.
I know there are many thoughts and opinions on the subject of masks and vaccines.  I respect those opinions, and I’m not here to debate either side.  As Superintendent of District Five Schools, it is my job to protect the safety and health of our precious students and staff.  We all DESPERATELY want to keep students in school, but our current struggles are not sustainable.  Here’s what I’m asking:  PLEASE CONSIDER HAVING YOUR CHILD WEAR A MASK AT SCHOOL.  As the leader of this district, I’ll be asking our District Five staff members to wear a mask as well.  This is especially important in our elementary schools, where students are still too young to be vaccinated.  On that note, if you have not received the vaccine, please listen to the warnings from our local medical experts, and consider getting your shot.
I respectfully ask these things on behalf of every child and member of our District Five family.  Our district nurses are struggling to keep up with COVID cases, our teachers are working harder than they’ve ever had to, and every staff member is feeling the strain that this virus has placed on our school system.  COVID is taking a toll on our schools and community, but I firmly believe, by working together, we can slow the spread and keep our children and staff safe and healthy.  If we collectively do these things, it will greatly increase the likelihood of keeping our schools open.
WE MUST ALL DO OUR PART.
As we have done throughout this pandemic, District Five promises to remain transparent, and report our processes and protocols to our community.  You can view our current cases and quarantines on our COVID-19 dashboard, which is located on the homepage of our district website, at www.spart5.net.
Thank you for your consideration and understanding during these tough times.  I sincerely pray you and your family stay healthy and well.
Sincerely,
Randall R. Gary Ed.D. , Superintendent

Spartanburg District 6 News & COVID Dashboard

Based on current weather and road conditions, Spartanburg School District Six will hold an e-learning day on Tuesday, January 18. Teachers will communicate with students regarding assignments and will be available by email if students have any specific questions. According to the National Weather Service, the major concern is overnight freezing temperatures causing widespread black ice, making many roads impassable. Thanks for your understanding, as safety is always our top priority.

The SC DHEC has updated its statutory School and Childcare Exclusion List to reflect the latest isolation and quarantine guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Below are the key points from DHEC’s updated Exclusion List: For those students and staff who have tested positive (isolation) the updated criteria for return:At least 5 days since symptoms started – and-24 hours since the last fever without using fever-reducing medication –and-Symptoms are significantly improving (must have parent note confirming)Masks must be worn days 5-10   For those students and staff who were exposed (close contact) to someone with COVID-19:Quarantine can end after Day 5 if a viral test is negative AND if no symptoms were reported during daily symptom monitoring. The test must be collected no sooner than Day 4, and quarantine cannot be discontinued earlier than completion of Day 5.A mask must be worn through day 10 If a close contact is fully vaccinated or has been infected with COVID-19 in the previous 90 days, they do not have to quarantine for any length of time. DHEC recommends they get tested on Day 5 even if they do not have symptoms, and they must wear a mask for 10 days.  https://scdhec.gov/health/child-teen-health/school-exclusion?fbclid=IwAR3sEeBE3HBCWWg4py5r0QR48NYTY6wzTlqjypQ1yccIU8ojW5MBdN05WBU

The decision to transition to e-Learning was made with great care. The safety of our families, teachers, staff and the community is our highest priority. Thank you for your continued support of High Point Academy.

We hope you all had a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable winter break! We are excited to start a new year and new semester together.
We are continuing to monitor information from local, state, and federal authorities regarding the COVID-19 virus as it relates to school operations. We remain committed to providing a school environment that is as clean and safe as possible for our students and staff while operating as close to normal as we safely can.
Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) updated their recommendations for isolation and quarantining after exposure to the COVID-19 virus. In an effort to help keep more students engaged in in-person learning, HPA will adopt the guidelines recently updated and recommended by the CDC and SC DHEC.
High Point Academy will follow the guidelines below for the isolation and quarantine of students exposed to COVID-19:

  • If your student tests positive for COVID-19, he/she must isolate at home for at least 5 days, regardless of vaccination status. If your student exhibits no symptoms after 5 days, he/she may return to school but must wear a mask while in school for the next 5 days.
  • If your student has close contact with someone with COVID-19 and has been fully vaccinated, your student does not need to quarantine but should get tested for COVID-19 on the fifth day after exposure. While in school, your student must wear a mask for 10 days after exposure.
  • If your student has close contact with someone with COVID-19 and has not been fully vaccinated, your student must quarantine at home for 5 days and should get tested for COVID-19 on the fifth day after exposure. If your student exhibits no symptoms after 5 days, he/she may return to school but must wear a mask while in school for the next 5 days.

In any case, if your child develops symptoms of COVID-19, we recommend that your child stay home and get tested for COVID-19. Symptoms of COVID-19 commonly include fever or chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, fatigue, body aches, new loss of taste or smell, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.
Our highest priority is the safety of our students, staff, and their families. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant for symptoms of COVID-19 and to be empathic and respectful to those affected. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve you and your student(s). Thank you for your support of High Point Academy.

COVID-19 SYMPTOMS AND TESTING:  As the number of COVID cases rises throughout the country and in the Upstate, we want to do our part to stop the spread of the virus and a potential (and preventable) closure of school. In addition to the protocols we have shared with you in recent weeks, we ask that you please contact the school nurse if your child is exhibiting symptoms and you keep them home because you suspect they might have COVID-19. Additionally, please let us know if you are having your child tested for COVID-19. This will help us with tracking, preventing the spread, and ensure your child doesn’t get behind academically. Please notify the school Nurse’s Office at nurse@hpaspart.org. You will also find COVID-19 resources on our website, along with a letter from Superintendent Brian Sherman to parents about prevention efforts.
