136 years! That’s how long the story of Annie has been captivating its audiences in one form or another. In 1885, the poem “Little Orphant Annie” brought the image of the spunky orphan Annie to life. Since then, we have seen her in comic strips, radio shows, silent films, Broadway musicals, film, and now the SCCT stage! The original 1977 Broadway production garnered seven Tony awards, featured popular songs “Tomorrow” and “It’s a Hard Knock Life,” and memorable characters Annie, Daddy Warbucks, Miss Hannigan, and the loveable dog Sandy–to name a few. The exciting story of “Annie” is really one that has something for everyone!
The Story of “Annie”
Maybe you haven’t seen “Annie” in awhile? It was one of those comforting movies I would watch as a child when I was under the weather. While I recall it being a feel-good movie filled with dramatic action and catchy, joyful music, I could not quite remember the plot. Let’s refresh our memories! There’s the spunky orphan Annie, who resides in an orphanage run by the wretched Miss Hannigan. She is adopted by the wealthy Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks in an attempt to improve his public image. Warbucks grows to love the vivacious Annie and aims to adopt her–but first launches a campaign to help Annie reunite with her long-lost parents.
The diabolical Hannigan springs into action, having her brother and his girlfriend pose as Annie’s parents. This is their attempt to gain the reward Warbucks offers to entice Annie’s parents to come forward. However, Hannigan’s plan is foiled and it ends happily with Annie becoming a permanent part of the Warbucks household.
