Summer vacation is finally here. With the school year routine put on the back burner, it’s time for parents to put on their thinking caps on how to keep the kids busy over the summer, without breaking the bank.
Going to the movies is a great idea for getting everyone out of the house, while still soaking up some cool AC indoors when the temperatures climb into the mid-90s. The bill at the movie theater can add up quickly, but there are ways around it that will make going to the movies one of the more affordable options to keep your children entertained.
How to save at the movies
Most movie theaters in the area offer special movie times over the summer that are very affordable. NCG Cinema offers a “Free Family Film Festival” on specific days in June and July this summer. The movies are free, but they are on a first come first serve basis, so plan accordingly. The movies they will be showing this summer include:
June 20, 21, 22, and 23: Despicable Me 3
June 27, 28, 29, and 30: The Boss Baby
June 27, 28, 29, and 30: The Lego Batman Movie
July 11, 12, 13, and 14: The Land Before Time
July 18, 19, 20, and 21: Ferdinand
July 25, 26, 27, 28: The Emoji Movie
All showings for the above movies is at 9:30 am on the given dates. Doors open at 9 am
Another way to save at NCG Cinema is with their rewards card (which is free to get). Bring this card every time you go to this theater and present it with every purchase you make there, whether it be your tickets, popcorn, soft drinks, or candy. For every dollar you spend, you earn one point. These points can be saved up to earn rewards. Earn 75 points and get a free small popcorn, 150 points to earn a large popcorn, or save up 250 points for a large popcorn and a drink. If you’re spending money at the movies, you might as well earn points while doing it and set yourself up to save later.
NCG Cinema is located at 1985 E. Main Street in Spartanburg. A list of movie titles and times, as well as more information about their rewards card can be found on their website.
Regal Cinemas offers “Summer Movie Express” on Tuesdays and Wednesdays over the summer. These movies only cost $1 per ticket. Like NCG, these are also movies that are already out on DVD, and while you can watch these movies at home, why not go to the theater and watch it on the big screen- the kids will love it! The list of movies below is for Regal Spartan Stadium 16, located at 855 Spartan Blvd in Spartanburg:

Regal Cinemas also offers a rewards program called the “Regal Crown Club.” Earn rewards every time you spend money at this theater, and cash them in once you’ve accumulated a certain amount. Their website has a list of rewards, which range from movie tickets, concessions, and even merchandise.
You can also save at this theater is by purchasing an “Ultimate Movie Pack.” The cost is $30 and includes two ultimate tickets (meaning they can be used for any movie, any day of the week), and a $10 concession gift card. While this might not seem like a huge savings, every little bit of savings adds up. Pair this with your Regal Crown Club and you can earn rewards while you have yourself an inexpensive date night.
