You Don’t Have to Stay Overnight to Enjoy Pisgah Inn
One thing I didn’t realize before visiting is that Pisgah Inn isn’t just a place to stay. It’s also a genuinely great stop if you’re exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway for the day.
The restaurant, observation deck, Buck Spring Wine Bar, gift shop, and outdoor seating areas are all open to the public. No room key required. Even if you aren’t spending the night, it’s worth pulling over for a little while to stretch your legs, enjoy the mountain views, and take a break from the drive.
The gift shop has plenty of souvenir-type items: books, jewelry, shirts, and other mountain-inspired gifts. We’re one of those families that buys a magnet everywhere we travel, so naturally I came home with one. The observation deck offers 180-degree views across the ridge line.

Tip: If you plan to eat at the restaurant, make a reservation before you go. Tables are limited, especially during busy summer and fall months. Walk-ins are welcome if there’s availability. Check with the dining room host when you arrive, but don’t count on it during peak season.
Is Staying Overnight Worth It?
Yes. Especially if you love mountain views and a quiet getaway.
My husband and I stayed during opening weekend in April after spotting a discounted room rate on Pisgah Inn’s social media. If you’re considering an overnight stay, I recommend following their accounts so you can catch early-season deals and special offers. Once summer arrives, and especially when fall colors appear, rooms sell out very quickly. Planning ahead matters!
Before staying, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Since Pisgah Inn has been around for decades, I imagined a more rustic, old-fashioned lodge. Instead, I was plesantly surprised. Our room was very clean, comfortable, and appeared to have been recently updated. There was a TV, coffee maker, mini refrigerator, and everything we needed for a comfortable night.
Every room faces the mountains, and the private balconies have rocking chairs overlooking the view. I could have happily spent half the day sitting out there with a cup of coffee. We spent so much time outside talking and looking out over the mountains.

Know Before You Go
A few things worth knowing before you pack the car:
- Pisgah Inn is open seasonally from April 1 through October 31.
- There is no air conditioning in the rooms, but at nearly 5,000 feet in elevation, you genuinely won’t need it. We were there in April and it was a little chilly at night.
- No pets are allowed anywhere on the property.
- Fill up your gas tank before getting on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are no gas stations along the drive.
- Allow extra drive time. Parkway maintenance and road projects can slow things down.
- Follow Pisgah Inn on social media for early-season discounts and special offers.
The Restaurant and Buck Spring Wine Bar
The biggest thing I’d tell anyone planning a stay: make your meal reservations before you go. Even overnight guests need a reservation for a guaranteed spot in the restaurant.
We had breakfast there the next morning, and it was a great experience. The food was good, the service was friendly, and sipping hot coffee while looking out at the mountains was a wonderful way to start the day. It was foggy during our breakfast, so we didn’t have the sweeping views we had hoped for, but the fog gave everything a peaceful, almost storybook feeling.

You can make reservations up to 14 days in advance via Resy on the Pisgah Inn website or by calling (828) 235-8228. Hotel guests should reserve meals separately as your room confirmation does not include dining.
The Grazing Deer Café is a grab-and-go option open 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily, though options can be limited. Since there aren’t restaurants nearby on the Parkway, I’d either reserve your meals ahead of time or bring snacks and simple food you can enjoy in your room.
Open 4:00 to 8:00 PM (days vary seasonally), the Buck Spring Wine Bar is a lovely bonus and offers wines by the glass or bottle. You can sip by the fireplace or take your glass to the observation deck or chairs along the ridgeline while you wait for dinner. It’s a very nice way to end an afternoon of hiking.

Tip: Drinks from the wine bar and gift shop are convenient but priced accordingly. If you’re a guest and would like to enjoy a beer or wine while relaxing on the ridge line after a hike, you may bring your own.
A Great Home Base for Hiking
One of the best things about staying at Pisgah Inn is that adventure starts right outside your door. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail passes through the property, and several popular hikes are just a short drive away.

Nearby Hikes Worth the Effort
- Mount Pisgah Trail: A steep and rocky hike starting at the second parking lot past the inn. It climbs to a summit of 5,721 feet with views of Asheville and the French Broad River Valley.
- Frying Pan Mountain Lookout Tower: A moderate hike ending at an old fire tower with stunning 360-degree views. We hiked here around sunset, and the view from the top was incredible. The tower itself has seen better days, but standing above the forest with panoramic views made the climb completely worth it.
- Buck Spring Trail: A moderate trail running from Pisgah Inn to Buck Spring Gap Overlook, passing the former site of George Vanderbilt’s hunting lodge.
Quick Trails and Waterfall Stops Nearby
- Skinny Dip Falls: A quick, moderate hike to a popular swimming hole and waterfall, though Helene significantly damaged the site.
- Devil’s Courthouse Trail: A short, steep hike further down the Parkway with a panoramic summit vista.

Is Pisgah Inn a Good Fit for Families?
Pisgah Inn is a great option for families who love being outdoors. If your kids enjoy hiking, scenic drives, and exploring waterfalls and overlooks, it makes a wonderful home base. You can spend the day adventuring and come back to a comfortable room with one of the best views on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
That said, parents of younger children should know this isn’t a resort with a pool, playground, or kids’ activities. Families can absolutely enjoy it, especially if kids are happy playing cards, reading books, or exploring outdoors, but it may not be the best fit for little ones who need constant entertainment.
The property is peaceful and quiet by design. But that’s a feature, not a bug, for the right family.
