Navigate: All You Need to Know About Lowes’ Kids Workshops: Free Fun

Let’s face it: We all have things we wish we learned growing up—For me, handy skills are definitely somewhere near the top of that list. Driving a nail, drilling a hammer, you name it and I am probably clueless about it!

But how many times could I have used that knowledge in my adult life? I’ve lost count!

Imagine my relief when I stumble across others who are not only willing, but delighted, to teach those things! I am so thankful for their willingness to share their time and knowledge with my children, and with me alongside them.

And where do I find those people? Lowe’s Home Improvement!

Lowes Kids Workshop for Mini DIYers

The Lowe’s kids workshops are similar to the other big box store where kids get a free construction project that is geared for their age and they get to put it together.

Building a lowes kids kit for free

On a different Saturday each month, our local stores offer DIY workshops just for kids.
These Lowes workshops center around different DIY projects each month, usually related to a holiday or seasonal theme, and every project gives kids the chance to practice…

  • Listening skills
  • Fine motor skills
  • Tool identification
  • Safe tool handling
  • Following instructions
  • Problem-solving
  • And more!

It’s 100% FREE to register, and one parent can register up to 4 children. Depending on staff availability, there may be in-person instruction on the day of the event, or we might be sent home with a kit and detailed instructions!

Kits come with all materials included, plus a special commemorative badge. Save these badges!

Once your child earns 6 project badges, they will be eligible to receive a special Junior Builder badge! Once your child earns 12, they can receive a Senior Builder badge, too!

If you do your project in-store, you’ll also have all the necessary tools provided for you! In case you end up taking a project home, the only supplies we’ve ever needed are a small 8-ounce hammer and kid-sized safety glasses.

What Do Kids Make at Lowe’s DIY Kids Workshops?

Projects are generally geared towards children ages 6 to 12 years old, but we have done these
with kids as young as 3 and had a great time. All projects are designed to be completed by parents and children together, so you’ll be there to supervise and can easily adjust things to meet your child’s skill level.

Strategies to help your child could include lining up the project components, getting the nails
started, or even just handling the assembly altogether and letting them tackle the decorations if they are too young!

Project kits almost always come with stickers, and we like to add the occasional paint, too! We’ve built birdhouses, coin banks, utility vehicles, and more! Projects often relate to a holiday or seasonal themes, and they could be decorations or toys. There is wonderful variability, so no matter how many our children complete, they never get tired of it.

These projects also make fantastic gifts for parents and grandparents, whether you just give the
finished product or gift the whole experience of building something together. Truthfully, the quality time and shared learning experience of these projects is my favorite part.

I’m not even remotely creative, so a guided project that I can do with my kids? Absolute win!

Signing Up for Lowe’s Kids Workshops

So what are you waiting for? Call, go online, or stop by your local Lowe’s TODAY to register for their next workshop. Then watch with joy as your child’s competence and confidence grow!

Remember: REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! We have scored the occasional take-home kit that was leftover after an event, but slots for these programs generally fill up in advance.

If you receive a take-home kit, don’t forget to ASK ABOUT TOOLS! You’ll want to make sure you have any necessary tools at home, or buy them before you leave the store.

Most importantly, HAVE FUN! If you’ve ever assembled your own furniture, you know even adults can get stressed when a project goes sideways. Always go into a project with your kids making FUN—not perfection—your priority, and you’ll be glad you did!
