More than just books

With an abundance of things to do for kids of all ages, it makes it easy to find an option for keeping your children busy after school and during school breaks. Story times are targeted toward children of specific ages, from infants, preschoolers, elementary school aged, and tweens. This is something parents can do at home, of course, but changing the atmosphere and being around other children can make story time a whole lot more fun!

Crafting time lets children to get creative by making slime, painting, crafting with beads, and making seasonal crafts like pumpkin painting. Best of all, the library supplies the materials they need for their craft, and they get to bring their masterpiece home. Movies for tweens allow children to just relax and hang out. There are video game tournaments for the gaming enthusiasts and outdoor games to have fun while getting some fresh air.

Spartanburg County Libraries have a Home School Program that usually takes place during the hours that school is in session. Parents can bring their home schooled children to a scheduled educational workshop. Workshops are often crafts or science experiments that add more fun to a home schooler’s learning curriculum.

Most of the children’s areas in the libraries offer a variety of educational toys and puzzles to keep kids entertained and allow parents to enjoy some quiet time. The Headquarters library, located in downtown Spartanburg, also has a playground in a fenced in area, which is easily accessed from the children’s book area. Benches and tables are available for parents while their children play or can be used as a place to enjoy a book with your child when the weather is nice.

Lego Club is another program that children really enjoy. Best of all, the kids don’t have to clean them up when finished (and parents don’t need to worry about stepping on one that was left out…ouch!).

Adults also have access to multiple events/activities with the Spartanburg County Libraries. Did you know that adults can take fitness classes such as yoga, pilates, and gentle exercise all without a gym membership? How-to classes like cooking and writing workshops keep your skills sharp. And, authors visits are great opportunities to hear directly from writers about their books and even have your book signed.

As the Spartanburg County Library has multiple locations, you can filter the events by location on the website, or view all at once. Activities and events vary by location.

The Planetarium and Maker Lab at the Headquarters Library

One of the biggest family draws is now the Planetarium Learning Center, which opened at the Headquarters Library on October 17, 2025. The library says the 28,000-square-foot addition at the corner of Broad and Church Streets houses a 50-foot-domed planetarium theatre with 135 seats. Shows run Tuesday through Saturday (there are no shows on Sundays or Mondays). Check the planetarium page for current showtimes, age requirements and sign-ups before you go. While you’re there, look for the Foucault Pendulum swinging in the planetarium lobby.

Did you know the library has 3-D printers and more for patrons to use? The Planetarium Learning Center is also home to the Kitty Black Perkins Maker Lab, originally known as Spark Space. It is named for Spartanburg native Kitty Black Perkins, creator of Mattel’s first Black Barbie doll. Good to know for families: the library says the Maker Lab is open only to people 12 and older with a completed liability waiver and maker agreement, and no one under 12 may use the space or accompany someone using it. 3D printing on the PLA printers costs $1.50 per hour.

I visited the spark space at the headquarters library today and was amazed by the equipment they have for everyone to use. Sewing machines, and embroidery machine, cricut and three 3d printers. I’ll be spending lots of time there learning how to use this equipment.
