Why Blue Moon Bodega is a Spartanburg Institution (And Our New Favorite Obsession)

Posted on |

Blue Moon Bodega has been an absolute institution in Spartanburg’s downtown for over 20 years. Admittedly, it’s been on our list to try for ages… but after our recent visit? We migfht be officially locked in as lifetime customers.

If you want a true taste of Sparkle City history wrapped up in a vibrant, family-friendly market and eatery, this is your sign to go.

Meet the Founding Family

You can feel the local love the second you walk through the door, and that comes straight from the family behind the counter:

  • Chris “Wishbone” Walker: The husband and father who has been a bedrock of the local food scene from day one. Fun fact: He was actually one of the first ever vendors at the very first Hub City Farmers’ Market two decades ago!
  • Molly Cashman: His dedicated daughter, who has spearheaded so much of the company’s growth and tireless involvement in our community over the years.

5 Things We Absolutely Loved About Our Visit

1. Honest-to-Goodness Affordable Pricing

Families, let’s talk budget: this place is affordable. The owners know it, and they intentionally plan on keeping it that way. We found the portion sizes to be incredibly plentiful, and the total cost was way lower than comparable restaurants in the area. You truly get bang for your buck here.

2. High-Quality, Scratch-Made Flavors

This is seriously some of the highest-quality food we’ve enjoyed in a long time. You can immediately tell that they take sourcing their ingredients seriously. We loved that so many of them are local, and absolutely everything is made fresh in-house.

3. Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner Mastery

While Blue Moon is probably best known as a perfect local lunch spot, they make a fantastic breakfast, too. We’ve tried a lot of Spartanburg’s best breakfast spots, and this belongs right up there with the absolute best of them.

Bonus: The main menu is served all the way through dinnertime, making it an easy win for busy weeknights.

4. A Lifesaver Selection of Prepared Meals

Need the perfect dish for a friend’s meal train? Need a little extra help with Thanksgiving or an upcoming potluck? Or maybe you just want an easy, stress-free dinner tonight?

Their from-scratch, take-and-bake options make Blue Moon a top pick for every occasion. A few standouts to look for:

  • Savory breakfast quiche
  • Hearty baked lasagna & stuffed peppers
  • Decadent chocolate pie (and so much more!)

5. A Treasure Trove for Gifts

True to its name, Blue Moon really is a bona fide bodega. If you need to build a gift basket for someone new to the area, you’ll find everything you need right here. The shelves are stocked with awesome Spartanburg merch, locally made goodies, and an excellent curated selection of wine.

Hands-Down One of the Most Family-Friendly Spots in Town

The absolute best part of our experience was how incredibly welcoming the space is for parents and kids. They’ve thought of all the little details that make dining out with a family stress-free:

  • Easy Logistics: Plenty of convenient parking right out front, plus single-use restrooms (an absolute lifesaver for those of us juggling kids solo).
  • The Vibe: Tasteful decor and plenty of screen-free seating with a selection of board games to keep everyone entertained the old-school way.
  • The Kids’ Menu: Absolutely fantastic—whatever you do, do not miss the kid-sized charcuterie board!
