The first thing our family tried was the RC Dirt Box, an indoor dirt arena where you get to operate full-alloy, remote-controlled construction machines. Think excavators, dump trucks, and loaders — only you’re the one in the driver’s seat.

The goal is to work your way through the dirt course, digging trenches, hauling dirt, maneuvering around obstacles, building, crawling through the course, and even searching beneath the dirt and mulch for hidden prizes.

Up to eight operators can participate at one time, and the RC Dirt Box is recommended for ages 5 and up. Our whole family jumped in and worked together to navigate the course. And, yes, some of us ended up sideways a few times.

But that’s part of the fun!

After a little practice, we started getting the hang of it and became surprisingly good at maneuvering those little construction machines around the course. It was definitely one of those activities where everyone was cheering each other on — and occasionally laughing when someone’s excavator took an unexpected turn.

There’s Plenty More to Do

One of the things that surprised us about Craft Axe Throwing is that it’s much more than axe throwing. While the adults in your group might be ready to throw some axes, there’s plenty to keep the rest of the crew entertained, too.

My teenage girls got a lesson in how to play pool, while my son happily operated the RC construction vehicles before moving on to skeeball and darts.

There are also board and card games available to play for free, which makes them perfect for filling a little time while you’re waiting for your turn or just hanging out after you’ve finished your activities.

Basically, you can make your visit as competitive or as laid-back as you want.

Then It’s Time to Throw Some Axes

Of course, we couldn’t visit Craft Axe Throwing without giving axe throwing a try.

And it was so much fun.

Axe throwing requires a waiver and is recommended for ages 10 and up. Ashley told us that the final decision is up to parents and their discretion if they feel their child can follow directions and participate safely. And apparently, regular axes weren’t quite enough for our crew.

You can also try throwing stars, along with some seriously impressive add-ons, including a larger throwing star, cleavers, and other specialty throwing weapons.

And for the especially adventurous, there’s even a spear-throwing add-on for $5. Let’s just say the spear was my husband’s favorite. He was absolutely channeling his inner Spartan.

Whether you’re naturally competitive or just want to see how many times you can stick an axe in a target, the axe throwing was definitely a highlight of our visit.

Our visit to Craft Axe Throwing & RC Dirt Box was one of those outings where everyone walked away with a favorite activity. The kids had fun with the RC construction equipment, pool, skeeball, and darts. The adults and teens got to try axe throwing — and apparently spear throwing, too — and the whole family got to work together navigating the dirt course.

It’s active, it’s a little competitive, it’s definitely different, and most importantly, it’s fun.
