Winchester Creek Farm in Waynesville, NC: Alpacas, a New Bakery, and All the Chaos You Didn’t Know You Needed

Winchester Creek Farm reached out and invited us to check out their newly opened Mountain Girls Bakery. That is all it took. I showed up ready to grab a cookie and left two hours later with a brownie sampler, two types of popcorn, two dozen fresh eggs, a prank spray calculator, a harmonica, pig socks, stuffed alpacas for the kids, and a whole new appreciation for the matriarchy within alpaca herds. You know. A normal Sunday.

You show up thinking “cute animals, fun outing” and leave charmed, better informed, and far more invested in alpaca politics than you ever planned to be. Tucked into the Smoky Mountains just outside Waynesville, it is a working family farm that hands you a bag of treats, gives you 45 minutes, and lets the animals do the rest.

What to Expect on the 45-Minute Farm Tour

The tour is educational in the way you hope for and rarely get — not the “stand here while someone reads off a clipboard” version, but the kind where you walk away knowing about alpaca fiber grades, herd dynamics, and animal behavior, and then repeat all of it at dinner. Tours run rain or shine and only cancel for lightning, major snow, or ice storms, so once you have tickets, you are going.

Your guide walks you through the farm section by section and introduces the animals by name, with their personalities and their histories. Depending on when you visit, you might also meet the farm’s expecting mamas. There were six or seven pregnancies in progress when we counted, and I will be honest with you: the excitement level on our end was not entirely dignified. (Insert childish laughter here.)

He is an alpaca. He has been campaigning for multiple election cycles now. And the moment you meet him, you get it. He has a presence, a stillness, an unmistakable “I should be in charge of things” quality that no photograph is going to capture for you. The farm leans all the way in, and it is one of those small details that makes Winchester Creek Farm feel like more than a farm tour.

The New Mountain Girls Bakery Is Absolutely Worth the Drive

The bakery is new, it is on-site, and it is the reason we got the invite. Mountain Girls Bakery is exactly what it sounds like: fresh baked goods in a mountain farm setting, which is an objectively excellent combination. We ate our way through a good portion of the case during our visit and then bought more to take home, because self-control is a myth in a farm bakery.

Granny’s House: The Gift Shop Where You Will Definitely Overspend

The farm’s gift shop is called Granny’s House, and it is stocked with alpaca fiber goods, plushies, alpaca-themed everything, jewelry, home decor, kids’ items, pet items, bath and body products, and locally sourced finds they update regularly. This is where the harmonica happened. My kids left with stickers that had migrated to the backs of their phones within 24 hours, and I left with several items I am still not prepared to explain.

75+ Chickens, Fresh Eggs, and a Little Free-Range Adventure

This part caught us off guard. The farm has more than 75 free-roaming chickens averaging about two dozen eggs a day. The catch is that those chickens are fully free-range and very much operating on their own agenda, which means they lay wherever they feel like it. Farm staff go on egg-finding expeditions on the regular. The eggs we brought home were spectacular.

The pigs are also worth knowing about in advance. Miniature, opinionated, and very photogenic. Plan accordingly.

Why This Is a Great Trip for Homeschool Families

This one surprised me — not because I did not expect it to be fun, but because I did not expect it to be this substantive. The tour goes well beyond “here is an alpaca, please do not spook it.” Guides cover animal breeds and pedigrees, alpaca fiber production, herd behavior and dynamics, and hands-on animal care. It is real educational content wrapped in fur and mountain air, and it lands across a wide age range.

All tours are reservation-only with advance ticket purchase. Book at winchestercreekfarm.com and plan to arrive 15 minutes before your start time. If you are late, you join mid-tour. Cancellations and reschedules need at least 24 hours’ notice and must be handled by phone or email. There are no refunds for any reason, including weather.

Standard farm rules apply: no outside animal treats, no gum, no tobacco or vaping products, no helium balloons, no pets on the property. These are in place to protect the animals and they are enforced.

• Alpaca Walk and Talk Experience: 45 minutes, ages 12 and up, groups of up to 7. You walk with the alpacas, feed them, and take selfies. Waiver and closed-toe shoes required.

• Picnic Area: Pack a lunch and use the picnic area outside Granny’s House before or after your tour.
