Looking for somewhere to meet up with your mom friends where you can actually talk while the toddlers play? As any toddler parent knows, a “playdate” is often just as much about the parents getting 30 minutes to catch up as it is about the kids playing together. And while I love a good playground or children’s museum, some places are much better suited to chatting than others. Here’s my list of the top 10 best places for Toddler Playdates in Greenville, SC.
After plenty of toddler outings, I’ve developed my own unofficial criteria for what makes a great toddler playdate spot:
- Easy to supervise A small, contained play area means you don’t have to chase your toddler in one direction while your friend goes the other way.
- Something else to do Because toddlers inevitably get bored with whatever they’re currently doing.
- Areas to snacks and drink Bonus points for places where you can actually buy food and there’s coffee available for mom!
- Not too loud or chaotic
So, here are 10 of my favorite places for toddler playdates in and around Greenville.
1. Legacy Park
Legacy Park is one of my favorite outdoor options because it checks almost every box.
The little kids’ playground is fully fenced and relatively small, with one play structure, slides, and two baby swings. It’s the kind of space where you can sit nearby and keep an eye on your toddler without following them around every second.
And when they inevitably decide they’re done with the playground, there’s plenty more to explore. The walking paths are great for stroller rides and connect to the Swamp Rabbit Trail. There are beautiful fountains, open grassy areas, a sand volleyball court where kids often bring sand toys, and little streams that are particularly fun for toddlers who love to splash and investigate.
There are covered picnic tables, benches and bench swings for snacks. And an extra bonus? Chestnut Coffeehouse is right across the street if you need coffee or a little something to eat.
My take: One of my top choices when you want a peaceful outdoor playdate with plenty to do.
2. Third Place Coffeehouse
If your ideal playdate includes coffee, snacks and a place where the kids can entertain themselves, Third Place on the boarder of Taylors and Greer is hard to beat.
The backyard has a mostly fenced-in and mostly shaded play area with just one opening to keep an eye on. There’s a whole collection of toddler-friendly toys, including ride-on toys, a play kitchen, a small slide, cars, rocking horses and trees to explore.
I also love the seating setup. There are bar-height tables where you can keep your coffee safely away from grabby little hands, along with regular picnic tables and even kid-sized picnic tables.
The coffee shop itself has plenty of drinks and baked goods, too.
It can get busy on Monday mornings, particularly when they host a Motion Mamas yoga class and because they offer a Moms on Mondays discount. But, because the play area is outdoors, it doesn’t feel nearly as loud as a busy indoor play space. Other days tend to be calmer.
My take: Probably one of the best choices when Mom needs coffee as much as the toddler needs a playdate.
Two other coffee shops in Fountain Inn and Simpsonville have small corners with toddler toys. Check out Kaleo Coffee or Crown and Bloom if you’re in that area and want to sip coffee while the toddlers tinker with toys.
3. Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery
The Swamp Rabbit Cafe is another great combination of toddler play + food + outdoor space.
The toddler play area is completely fenced and partially shaded, with lots of toys to explore. You’ll find ride-on cars, little slides, trucks, play kitchens and other well-loved toys.
When the kids need a change of scenery, you’re right along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, making it easy to take the stroller for an out-and-back walk. You can also wander through the grocery store and let your toddler check out all the interesting things inside.
And then there’s the food. There are plenty of picnic tables, plus amazing local, fresh, and healthy food and drinks available from the cafe and grocery.
This spot can definitely get busy depending on the day and time, but because most of the action is outside, I find the noise much more manageable than it would be in a crowded indoor space.
My take: A great choice when you want to turn a simple playdate into a little outing.
4. Butler Springs Park
For a quieter, no-frills playground playdate, Butler Springs Park is a favorite of mine.
The smaller playground is fully fenced, fairly compact and somewhat shaded, with a play structure, two swings and a little bouncing bumblebee ride-on.
There’s also more to explore once the kids are finished with the playground. Walking paths are great for stroller rides, and toddlers can watch tennis matches from the nearby courts. The bleachers by the baseball field are another fun place to climb and explore, and there’s a little sand nearby that can keep kids entertained.
There are picnic tables and benches, but you’ll need to bring your own snacks and drinks. Occasionally, you’ll find a hot dog or hamburger stand when little league games are happening.
My take: A simple, peaceful option when you don’t need anything fancy and especially if you want some shade.
5. Greenville Libraries
Don’t overlook the library when you’re trying to plan a toddler playdate!
Many local libraries have small children’s play areas, which can be surprisingly perfect for toddlers. They’re generally easy to supervise, and little kids tend to be interested in the toys and activities without feeling the need to wander too far.
The downtown library has an entire playroom in the back when it’s not being used for classes or programs. Other libraries have smaller play areas with toys, puzzles, coloring activities and toddler-friendly computer games.
We’ve especially enjoyed some of the painting games and a read-with-me program called Find It: Animals, where kids are asked to find different animals on the screen.
The downside? Libraries generally don’t allow food or drinks other than closed water bottles. So plan your snack break before or after your library visit—or head outside if you need to refuel.
Of course, the other big advantage is that libraries are meant to be quiet! So, calm conversations are definitely possible.
My take: A surprisingly good rainy-day playdate when you want something calm and low-key.
6. Other Lands
Other Lands is another spot where you can combine toddler playtime with food and drinks.
The back play area is relatively small and has a gated fence on one side. There are a couple of exits to keep an eye on, but it’s still easy to supervise compared with a huge playground.
You’ll find things like several playhouses, ride-on cars and bikes, and a climbing dome.
Unlike a traditional playground, you don’t have to pack your own picnic. Other Lands has food and drinks available, with seating both inside and out.
I’ve never found it overwhelmingly crowded, either, which makes it much easier to sit and actually have a conversation with another mom.
My take: A good option when you want food, drinks and toddler entertainment all in one place.
7. Herdklotz Park
Herdklotz Park has a nice little playground for younger kids that is fully enclosed and easy to supervise. There’s one play structure, a couple of swings and a bouncing platform.
One important note: I’d stick with the little kids’ area for a toddler playdate. The big kids’ playground is, I’d say, one of the most challenging and daring in Greenville, making it difficult to keep little ones safe, even if you’re paying close attention.
Beyond the playground, there are walking trails and open fields to explore.
There are also plenty of picnic tables, although you’ll need to bring your own snacks and drinks. Occasionally, you may find a food truck when a sports league is happening.
My take: A decent toddler area to play and not too crowded.
8. Village Play and Cafe
Village Play is one of my favorite indoor options because it feels much more manageable for toddlers than some of the huge indoor play spaces.
Unlike places such as TCMU or Judson Mill, Village Play is relatively small and designed specifically for young children. You can truly keep track of your child without having to follow them through a maze of giant play structures.
And there’s another big bonus: BloomHouse Studios is attached to Village Play. During certain open-studio hours, kids can explore art supplies and sensory play activities. Plan your visit around open studio and you’ve essentially got two activities in one.
Village Play also has a cafe, so parents can grab a drink and sit down while the kids play.
Because the space is small and geared toward younger children, it also tends to feel much calmer than larger indoor play facilities.
My take: A great indoor option if you’re willing to pay an entrance fee.
9. Chick-fil-A Play Areas During Off-Peak Hours
Hear me out: Chick-fil-A can actually make a pretty great toddler playdate.
The trick is going during an off-peak time rather than during the lunch or dinner rush. Think around 10 a.m. or 2 p.m.
The kids can play in the indoor play area while parents sit nearby and catch up. And, of course, you have the added benefit of being able to order food and drinks without having to pack anything.
Chicken is generally a pretty easy toddler sell, and parents can grab coffee, lemonade or another drink while they chat.
My take: Not fancy, but a cheap indoor option where everyone can also get a snack.
10. Greenville Zoo
The Greenville zoo might not be the first place you think of for a toddler playdate, but I actually think it’s a surprisingly good option.
If your toddler is willing to ride in the stroller for portions of the visit, you can walk and talk while checking out the animals. Toddlers can point out monkeys, snakes and all the other animals along the way, giving you plenty to talk about with your little friend.
I also like that you’re away from traffic. That gives toddlers a little more freedom to walk or run around without the same concern you’d have at a playground right next to a parking lot or busy road.
You can bring your own snacks or buy food at the zoo, and there’s even coffee for parents.
My take: Best for when you want your playdate to feel more like a mini adventure and when you want your kids to have freedom to run around. This is an especially good spot if you have an annual zoo membership.
A Few Places That Almost Made the List
There are plenty of other great toddler-friendly spots around Greenville. Below are ones that just missed the cut for my list.
Unity Park
My toddler loves Unity Park, especially when the splash pad is running, and The Commons has great food and drinks nearby.
But, the park as well as the Commons dining area are huge and can get very crowded, which means toddlers have a lot of room to wander. You’re more likely to spend your playdate chasing your child than chatting with your friend.
TCMU Spartanburg
The Spartanburg location of The Children’s Museum is noticeably smaller and less chaotic than the Greenville location, and I think it’s much better suited to toddlers.
It’s designed for younger children and is small enough that you can give your child a little more freedom to explore. The problem is that your toddler can still head in one direction while your friend’s toddler heads in another!
And, of course, Spartanburg is a bit of a drive from Greenville, which is why it didn’t quite make my top 10.
HeyDay & PKL Park
Both of these spots have little kid play areas alongside large screens showing sports, plus plenty of food and drinks.
They’re definitely family-friendly and can be great places to eat while the kids play. But the giant screens and sports atmosphere can get pretty loud, which makes them less ideal when the main goal is actually catching up with your friend.
What Makes a Great Toddler Playdate?
After trying plenty of different spots, I’ve learned that my favorite playdate locations aren’t necessarily the biggest or most exciting ones. For me, small and contained wins every time.
Give me a little fenced-in playground, somewhere to sit, a cup of coffee and a toddler who can entertain themselves for 20 minutes, and I’m a happy mom.
