When we pulled up to Eastway Park on Spartanburg’s eastside, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. We had heard about the renovations, and I was hopeful — but nothing quite prepared me for what we found. I opened the gate to the new fully fenced playground, and my kids immediately took off. It was one of those rare moments where you don’t have to redirect anyone, because every kid has already found exactly what they want to do.

New Life for a Neighborhood Park
Eastway Park has served as a gathering place for Spartanburg’s eastside community for more than two decades. Tucked into a residential neighborhood, the park originally belonged to the Eastway Park Neighborhood Association. Kids from the surrounding homes would gather for pickup basketball on the outdoor court or baseball on the field, and neighbors worked together to care for the property.
In 2022, the neighborhood association gifted the park to the Spartanburg County Parks Department, which had been helping maintain it for years. Then, in April 2026, the Parks Department announced some significant upgrades — and the first of those improvements is now open to the public: a brand-new playground.
A Fully Fenced Playground Built for Every Kid
The new playground at Eastway Park checks all the boxes for families with multiple ages. It’s fully fenced, with two separate play structures inside — one scaled for toddlers and preschoolers, one built for big kids. A single gate keeps everyone contained, and the layout makes it easy for parents to keep eyes in both directions at once.
For the Littles: Toddler and Preschool Playset
The smaller playset is perfectly sized for toddlers and preschoolers. It features toddler-accessible stairs, two low climbing walls, and three slides — just the right challenge level for the youngest members of your crew. Even better, it sits just a few feet from the larger playset, so you can keep an eye on both playsets without running back and forth.
For the Big Kids: The Alien Tower
The larger playset is best for ages 6 and up, and it has some serious personality. It centers around a tall tower decorated with pictures of little aliens in flying saucers — the kind of artwork that makes kids feel like they’re genuinely climbing toward the stars. Stairs, ladders, and unique climbing structures offer plenty of challenge, and the slide options include one tall tube slide plus three open slides for when they can’t decide which to pick. (Spoiler: they’ll pick all of them.)
Swings and Sensory Surprises
Inside the fence, you’ll also find a solid swing setup: four standard swings, one baby swing, and one accessible swing. And if you have a child who loves sensory play, keep your eyes open for the surprises embedded throughout the equipment. We had a great time solving an alien maze inside the tower and sending metal washers spiraling noisily down an array of long cords — a feature that might honestly keep your kids occupied longer than anything else in the park.
This playground was clearly built with families of every kind in mind, and we are so thankful to have this new option available to us on Spartanburg’s east side.
Tip: This playground is in full sun for most of the day, with shade only in the early morning and late evening from the surrounding mature trees. Pack sunscreen or sun hats, and don’t forget your water bottles — there is no water fountain at the park.
More Improvements at Eastway Park
The playground isn’t the only thing that’s gotten an upgrade. The baseball and softball field has been fully renovated, with two bleachers now in place for parents to sit and cheer. A paved path connects the field all the way to the playground and parking area, making it easy to move between spaces without navigating unpaved ground. The parking lot itself has been fully paved and painted, with handicap-accessible spots and a gate at the entrance.
A walking trail is also planned for the future, and we’re looking forward to seeing that next phase come to life!

- It’s in a residential neighborhood. Drive slowly, watch out for children and dog-walkers, supervise your kids, and clean up after yourselves. Be a good neighbor!
- Pack your sunscreen and sun hats. The playground is in full sun for most of the day. Plan accordingly, especially during summer months.
- Bring water. There is no water fountain on-site, so top off your bottles before you head over.
