Get to Know LaGrange

The origin story of LaGrange, Georgia tells you so much about the feel of this city. Before it was incorporated in the early 1800s, General Marquis de Lafayette of France visited the area and said it reminded him of his family estate abroad, then known as La Grange.” The city maintains the feel of a countryside escape even today, and when you visit downtown, you will find a statue of Lafayette overlooking a large, romantic fountain in the city center.

Shopping in Downtown LaGrange

We took some time to explore downtown LaGrange, and there were several little shops for families to enjoy. Every shop has a unique feel and personality, and it’s easy to spend a couple of hours just wandering from shop to shop to see what you might discover!

Our favorite was Pretty Good Books, which caught our attention with quirky signs that book-lovers will appreciate. Housed in the oldest non-residential building in the city, the shop is even featured on the local ghost tour. It offers new and used books, with a dedicated room for children’s books upstairs. We loved the mural and toys that made this a great space for kids to cozy up with a book or play while parents pick out some options.

Other shopping highlights include Solomon’s Department Store, opened by an immigrant from Lebanon with his family nearly 100 years ago. Today, they offer clothing and shoes for men, women, and children in their attractive downtown store. For the kids, you’ll find Buddy’s Comics is a treasure trove of board games, card games, and comics. The Medicine Cabinet sells toys and gifts for the whole family, and even offers an old-fashioned Soda Shoppe with counter-service milkshakes and glass ice cream dishes.

Downtown Attractions and Experiences

While we enjoyed walking from shop to shop, we also found easy parking all over downtown. We decided to drive around to see what attractions were in the area, and we found a few worth highlighting for families.

Things To Do in Downtown LaGrange, GA

Sweetland on Ice

When visiting in the winter, you will not want to miss Sweetland on Ice, a temporary covered ice-skating rink in the heart of downtown LaGrange. Open only on weekends for the general public and for private parties during the week, the rink is beautifully decorated and has skates available to rent, plus concessions for sale.

We found convenient restrooms onsite, plenty of seating around the ice-skating rink, and multiple warming stations. They even had skate helpers, which allowed our toddler to join us on the ice without fear of falling. We recommend checking their website for special events, too, like their holiday movie nights or New Year’s Eve party.

Sweetland Amphitheatre

It’s also worth checking the event calendar for the Sweetland Amphitheatre, a 2,500-seat outdoor amphitheatre where you might be able to catch musicians and other performances throughout the year. We watched a beautiful sunset over the amphitheatre while visiting Sweetland on Ice, and it made us look forward to catching a show there once the weather gets warmer!

LaGrange Art Museum

On future visits, we hope to explore the LaGrange Art Museum. Even the artwork on the exterior of the building caught our eye, and we wished we had the chance to go inside and experience it. We’ve been told the exhibits are family-friendly, and they offer events for kids, including Family Days every third Saturday of the month. Admission is free, and the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday.

Find Full-Family Adventure

If you’re looking for a greater sense of adventure, we found some amazing destinations just a little way from the city center. These are guaranteed to make memories, so make sure there’s room on your camera roll and be prepared to spend several hours together at these locations!

Biblical History Center

On the west side of town, discover the extraordinary Biblical History Center, open only Tuesdays through Saturdays. Of all the places we would have loved to visit if we’d had more time, this one would have been top of the list! Tour the center with your children to discover the Archaeological Replica Garden, an immersive walk-through experience with life-sized replicas of ancient Biblical structures based on modern-day archaeology. During the holidays, they also offer an extraordinary Nativity Tour with a live Nativity presentation.

Hills & Dales Estate

My favorite attraction in LaGrange was the Hills & Dales Estate. Coming from the Carolinas, it reminded me of Biltmore Estate in Asheville, but this estate is smaller with a much stronger emphasis on family ties and values. I loved watching the mini-documentary at the start of the tour, which outlined how the estate came into existence over three generations of loving marriages and family bonds:

  • Blount and Sarah Ferrell originally planted the estate as Ferrell Gardens, with their Christian faith coming through as they planted boxwoods arranged to spell out God’s name at the garden entrance and “God is love” on the main terrace.
  • Fuller and Ida Callaway acquired the land after the passing of the Ferrells, to whom they were close friends. They preserved the gardens and built their family home there, renaming it Hills & Dales Estate after the gorgeous hills and dales all over the property.
  • Their sons, Cason and Fuller Callaway Jr., married a set of sisters, Virginia (Cason’s wife) and Alice (Fuller Jr.’s wife), and built houses on either side of their childhood home. Fuller Jr. eventually came into ownership of Hills & Dales Estate, and Cason went on to develop the nearby Callaway Gardens property in Pine Mountain, Georgia.
Hills & Dales Estate in LaGrange, GA

My guide was a delightfully knowledgeable volunteer named Mr. Gregory, who shared a wealth of information on the tour. My favorite stops were the living area at the bottom of the grand staircase, both of which were beautifully decorated for Christmas.

Kids on the tour should check out the Home & Garden Scavenger Hunt, available for pickup at the Visitor’s Center before you ride a shuttle up to the main house. This hunt turns the entire tour into a giant seek-and-find experience, and your kids are sure to search eagerly for every curiosity pictured!

After the house tour, Mr. Gregory led me into the gardens. We visited the garage, where workshops like wreath-making are offered regularly, and the greenhouse, where so many things were blooming even in winter.

As I walked through the gardens, my mind kept returning to the documentary at the start of the tour. There were so many personal touches and memories held there, like the large stone bench where one of the couples said they had fallen in love.

Callaway Gardens

The nearby Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain is a family favorite. You’ll find miles of hiking and biking trails through the gardens, plus a lake to enjoy during warmer seasons. In the winter, Fantasy in Lights is a fantastic drive-through experience with themed holiday light displays stretching across the 2,500-acre gardens. There is even a walk-through Christmas Village, with a large holiday gift shop and character meet-and-greets like Santa and the Abominable Snowman.

Wild Animal Safari

Also in Pine Mountain, you can check out Wild Animal Safari, offering both a walk-through and drive-through petting zoo experience with exotic animals like zebras, bison, and giraffes! You’ll have the opportunity to hand-feed the animals and take pictures with them.

For the drive-through experience, you can either take your personal vehicle, rent a zebra car, or ride on one of the zebra tour buses through the safari park. Driving a car through the park allows you to go at your own pace, but your personal vehicle can be easily damaged, so I highly recommend a zebra car!

Taste Your Way Around LaGrange

We could have spent much more time exploring the dining scene in LaGrange, but what we did get to taste was stellar. And for picky eaters? This place has its share of chain restaurants, too.

Family-Friendly Places to Eat in LaGrange, GA

Breakfast at Gus’s Grill

For breakfast, we checked out Gus’s Grill, which was recommended to us by several locals. We enjoyed classic breakfast items off the griddle, like pancakes, eggs, and bacon.

This small eatery draws a big crowd, so plan to arrive right when they open to avoid a wait. Even when we arrived only 30 minutes after opening, we still waited about half an hour for a table. If you’re comfortable sitting at the counter, that option can get you seated more quickly.

If you are looking for a more familiar place to eat, then feel free to check out the Cracker Barrel, Waffle House, or Chick-Fil-A in the city of LaGrange, too.

Lunch at Great Wolf Lodge

Combine food and fun at Great Wolf Lodge! This combined hotel and resort offers day pass bundles for their attractions, including a water park, ropes course, mini-golf, MagiQuest, and more. You’ll also find a variety of dining options, like family-sized pizzas from Hungry As A Wolf, tacos and quesadillas from Timbers Tacos, and classic American grub from Buckets Burgers & Bites.

Just be advised that food pricing inside the resort is very expensive. For a more affordable lunch, consider Charlie Joseph’s counter-service diner or Trios Cantina‘s authentic Mexican cuisine, both locally owned and located in downtown LaGrange.

Dinner at Milano’s

The dining highlight of our entire trip was our visit to Milano’s Pizza in LaGrange. Don’t let the name fool you: This is not your typical pizza joint. This authentic Italian restaurant offers a classy, romantic atmosphere—completely perfect for the family to wind down after a long day exploring.

Our server, Mr. Jackson, gave us some of the best food and customer service we’ve had in a very long time. We were impressed by the affordable pricing and generous portion sizes, too. We each ate as much as we could and still walked out with more leftovers than we could finish!

There’s also a display case near the front, packed with irresistible cakes. You can purchase these by the slice, so plan to enjoy dessert at the table, or order some to-go to enjoy back at the hotel.

There are other local options to try for dinner, but we had such a fantastic experience at Milano’s Pizza that I am not even going to name them. You do not want to miss out on trying this place first!

Choose the Perfect Hotel for Your Holiday

There are many places to stay in LaGrange, but we found a couple that are top of the list for families.

Top Places to Stay in LaGrange, GA

Courtyard Marriott

If you want to continue the cozy, upscale feeling of LaGrange at the end of the day, then I recommend Courtyard Marriott in the middle of downtown. This hotel offers the comfort and quality we’ve come to expect from Marriott, plus a 24/7 bistro with Starbucks coffee.

Great Wolf Lodge

If you want your accommodations to bring another whole level of fun to your family vacation, then I recommend Great Wolf Lodge. This resort offers standard, themed, and premium suites, plus endless fun at built-in attractions. Overnight packages include access to their indoor water park, and additional packages are available to access the ropes course, mini-golf, MagiQuest, and more.

And if you’ve stayed at a Great Wolf Lodge in the past, then just know that we had multiple readers tell us this location is their absolute favorite!

Let Your Holiday Begin

LaGrange is the perfect destination for families over the holidays. It combines historic downtown charm, seasonal attractions, and fun-filled accommodations like Great Wolf Lodge. With so many things to do, plus amazing dining and shopping, families can enjoy making memories here on a truly relaxing vacation together. How often do you find a place that special?

Lost Sea Adventure: Take a Boat Across an Unforgettable Underground Lake

Posted on |

👀What’s Inside: Everything you need to know before visiting the Lost Sea Adventure, from what the tour is really like to the can’t-miss underground lake experience in Tennessee.

The Lost Sea Adventure in Sweetwater, TN is one experience you really won’t want to miss. This one is unforgettable. If a crystal clear lake, a glass bottom boat, cave flowers, and a guided tour through amazing geologic features sounds like your kind of adventure, then put America’s largest underground lake on your bucket list.

We visited the underground lake and caverns in Tennessee, and it did not disappoint. So, get planning! Here’s everything you need to know about the Lost Sea Adventure!

Was in a cave during Deep Sea Adventure in Tennessee

Always looking for my next adventure, when I heard of the Lost Sea just outside Knoxville, Tennessee, I knew I had to go. I actually keep a running list of all the cool things I want to do and places to go, and this one had been on my list for the past couple of years because it is legitimately a crystal clear, cold lake 150 feet underground amongst creepy and cool caverns. An underground lake.

Did it live up to my expectations? Oh yeah, it did.

Winter cabin rentals: Owl's Nest in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. VRBO photo credit

Traveling to nearby Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg? Here’s over 40 things to do in Gatlinburg, TN and Pigeon Forge, TN.

The Lost Sea Adventure

The Lost Sea is the country’s largest underground lake, which you get to see when you tour the extensive caverns in Sweetwater, TN. And take a boat ride on!

The caverns are huge and have been in use since the days of the Cherokee tribe, who often used the caves to hold councils. Many Cherokee artifacts have been found that point to this history.

During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers mined the caverns for saltpeter, which was used to make gunpowder. Before that, settlers made use of the constant 58-degree temperature in the caves to store their produce.

It wasn’t until 1905 when a 13-year-old boy, Ben Sands, set out to find the rumored lake at the bottom of the caverns. He did end up finding it but no one believed him until decades later when explorers found the same lake. To this day, no one knows how big the lake is. The visible part you see on the tour is 800 feet long by about 200 feet wide and around 75 feet deep. Divers have attempted to explore underground tunnels that protrude from the lake but have not been successful in mapping out how big the lake is.

The Caverns

The majority of the tour is on solid ground amongst the vast cave system that is part of Craighead Caverns. There are all kinds of rare formations throughout the caves that your guide will show you and point out. Many of these formations have taken thousands of years to grow to their current size.

Parts of the caverns have massive rooms and ceilings. If you love geology, you’ll certainly enjoy the tour. The prevalence of the rare “anthodites”, which we learned are called more commonly, “cave flowers” are abundant in these caves. Most caves do not have these anthodites and because of this, these caverns have been designated a Registered National Landmark by the US Department of the Interior.

Craighead Caverns

One particular story that I thought was quite funny was about how one giant room of the cave was a bar and dance hall in 1947. Guests were served moonshine and because of the depth of the caves (or something like that), the effects of the moonshine weren’t felt on the people drinking, which led them to believe they were getting watered-down drinks and drinking all the more moonshine. They would feel the effects of the alcohol once they exited the cave and started up the tunnel to leave. Then it was mayhem. The bar only lasted for all of two months.

Underground Waterfall

I had seen photos of waterfalls in caves before but had never seen one in person till this tour.

Crystal Falls is the name of the small underground waterfall in these caverns that spills from somewhere in the ceiling of the cave onto the formations below. Our guide said it’s the only known source of water coming into the caves. It was super cool and flowed into a small stream next to the lake.

The Boat Tour: A Glass Bottom Boat

So getting to the lake was just as exciting as I pictured. The caves open up into this huge room that is dark except for the lights shining underwater, illuminating the perfectly clear water. I really wanted to grab my kayak or paddleboard and take a ride. They don’t allow that, in case you’re wondering.

The fish all start swimming up to the dock once you reach that area. Now, these are no ordinary fish. These are all Rainbow Trout (no, you cannot go fishing here) that are stocked here every couple of years and are enormous. They are some of the biggest trout you’ll see anywhere. Why? Because they are fed on every single tour that comes into the caverns.

Lost Sea Adventure Tennessee

The lake is so clear and untouched that no microbes or algae grow that fish can feast upon. They can’t even breed here. Therefore, they get to live pretty sweet lives being coddled and fed several times a day. Leaning over the boat to get a good look at them was really cool. Part of the boat has a glass bottom so you can view them that way as well.

This was our favorite part of the tour just because it was so unique. Our group was pretty small also and not very talkative so the boat tour was very quiet. In fact, the entire time we were in the caves, it was very silent whenever our guide wasn’t talking. In a world full of constant noise, it was just a different feeling and noticeable.

Wild Cave Tour

If you are up for even more of an adventure, the Lost Sea offers the Wild Cave Tour that includes all of the cool stuff of the normal tour and boat ride plus climbing into undeveloped rooms and seeing all the neat things you don’t get to see on the regular tour.

These tours are for groups like Scouts, camps, churches, or people who just want to explore more. A minimum of 12 spots must be reserved for this tour and bookings must happen at least two weeks in advance.

Eating Nearby at Sweetwater Valley Farm

The restaurant and General Store at The Lost Sea wasn’t open when we went so I had to figure out something else for lunch. And that we did.

We went 20 minutes away to Sweetwater Valley Farm, a dairy farm set on rolling green hills, for their grilled cheese sandwiches, milkshakes, and cheese samples. This was one of the best-grilled cheeses and milkshakes I had ever had.

The farm also does tours of their dairy and cheese operations if you wanted to make it a longer day trip to the area. I’m already dreaming of when to go back and get a milkshake.

Things to know about the Lost Sea + tickets

  • The tour is a walking tour and you’ll walk about three-quarters of a mile in total with the last quarter mile being all uphill.
  • The boat tour is around 15-20 minutes and the total tour time is an hour.

  • Kids have to be watched at all times.
  • Tickets are $28.95/adult, $16.95/ages 4-12, and kids 3 and under are free.

  • There is a glass blower, trail, picnic tables, and ice cream shop on the property as well if you want to explore while there.

Lots of Winter Family Fun at Black Bear Snow Tubing in Hendersonville, NC

Posted on |

Are you thinking about snow tubing at Black Bear Snow Tubing in Hendersonville, NC? Western North Carolina has great snow tubing and Black Bear Snow Tubing is a stellar option for families! They have a huge mountain to get your winter in high gear with a fun snow tubing trip for the whole family!

We took a trip up to try out that snow-tubing mountain and it was so much fun! Now we have all the details to share so you can plan your trip!

Media tickets were provided for this review, and the opinions are solely those of the author.

Snow tubing at Black Bear in Hendersonville, NC

While there aren’t any places to snow tube in the Upstate, SC, there are definitely options nearby and one of them is Black Bear Snow Tubing in nearby Hendersonville, NC, just over an hour from Greenville, SC. The snow tubing family-owned operation has been in business for over eight years and they really have a good thing going there, which I’m going to tell you all about in this story.

Black Bear Snow Tubing opens on December 20, 2025 for their 2025-26 season. This is a great way to support local Western NC businesses still struggling after Hurricane Helene.

Scenes From the Slope

Take a sneak peek at this video at Black Bear Snow Tubing.

Snow Tubing at Black Bear

The slope at Black Bear Snow Tubing is 600 feet long with an 80-foot drop and it’s pretty fast. They make their own snow (unless they get a big snowstorm, which doesn’t happen too often) and the hill is well-maintained by their attentive staff.

How it works is that when you get to Black Bear, you go to a little shed to watch a short safety video, where you learn how to get out of your tube on the run and not to start snowball fights, sign a waiver, and head inside the cozy lodge to pay. Then you get your tubes and head to the hill.

They have a pulley system to get you to the top of the hill, which works by slipping the handle of your tube on a cable that takes you, while sitting inside your tube, right up the hill to the top. Once at the top, you’ll wait for a few minutes before being situated into your group by the staff and then sliding down the hill.

Why Black Bear is Different

I’ve snow tubed at many places in our area and I think Black Bear Snow Tubing is pretty fantastic. Here’s why:

  • You can (and should) make a reservation ahead of time, which is crucial for us in Greenville who need to travel out of state to go snow tubing. It’s quite a bummer to get to our snow tubing place and either find out that they are sold out or having to wait hours for an open slot.
  • The staff is attentive and efficient. They were always around watching the hill to make sure things were running smoothly and safely. When there was a slight backup at the top of the hill, they figured out how to manage to get us all down the hill and back up to keep snow tubing without interruption.
  • The lodge is super cozy and warm and has reasonable concessions. I got a $2 hot chocolate and it was amazing. Plus, they have food, including apple cider donuts, that is affordable and you can get warm by the wood-burning stove inside or watch on the deck if you don’t want to go tubing.
  • The setup takes into account smaller kids. There is playground next to the place where you wait in line to go up the hill so smaller kids can get out their energy and there is a big fire pit also near the waiting area where you can warm up.
  • If you forgot a hat or gloves, they have them for sale inside the lodge. I feel like us parents can relate when our kid gets out of the car to go snow tubing and forgot his or her winter hat.
  • The check-in is fast. This is important because you want to get on the hill and start having fun as soon as possible!
  • Black Bear has excellent communication. They post daily on their Facebook page about current snow conditions, which is super helpful when you’re unsure about the weather.
  • The snow is real. They don’t have any synthetic chemicals in the snow – it’s the real deal.

My kids, ages 11 and 8, and I had such a blast snow tubing at Black Bear Snow Tubing. We went down the hill about 10 times (maybe more, I lost count honestly) and had so much fun together. I really love places where adults can carelessly be kids again. My kids are already asking to go back. The hill was super fast and seeing my kids faces light up with joy was special. I love those moments.

Tips on How to Enjoy Snow Tubing at Black Bear

Winter being winter, it’s usually cold when you go snow tubing. I’ve found that bringing hand and foot warmers is a really good trick to keeping everyone warm and comfortable. You can get them at Wal-Mart, Amazon, or most drug stores and they stay warm for hours.

Sliding down in a tube at Black Bear Tubing

It’s also really important to make a reservation when you know you want to go snow tubing. This is especially true during school breaks and holidays. Snow tubing is an awesome family activity on a day off but a lot of people also have the same thought. Don’t forget to make a reservation.

You don’t need to wear snow bibs or snow pants. I had on fleece leggings, hiking boots, and a couple layers of tops with a heavy coat (it was really cold when we went!) and I was fine. I saw people wearing all kinds of clothes that worked for them like pants, leggings, jeans, and sweatpants. The snow wasn’t wet at all when we went but if you go on a warmer day, you may want to bring a change of pants in case they get wet.

There are port-a-potties outside the lodge to use, and no bathrooms indoors.

Double-check Black Bear’s Facebook page before heading out. Snow tubing is very dependent on weather, which changes often in the mountains. They will post current conditions and if they are open or closed most days.

Ticket Prices and Policies at Black Bear Snow Tubing

Tickets are $30/hour or $40/two hours for snow tubing. Kids must be 4 years old in order to go snow tubing. You can either sign a waiver when you get to Black Bear Snow Tubing or print one out online ahead of time. Either is fine.

While Black Bear Snow Tubing does take walk-ups, it is much better to make a reservation ahead of time instead of getting there and finding out they are full. Online reservations are fantastic for this very reason so definitely make use of them.

And be sure to check Black Bear Snow Tubing’s Facebook page before heading out to double check they are open and running. Winter tubing runs mid-December through February usually depending on the weather, of course.

And if you want to tube during other times of the year, you totally can! They have warm-weather tubing in the fall.

Dillsboro, NC Lights & Luminaries

Lights & Luminaries in Dillsboro

Dillsboro’s Lights & Luminaries is the Hallmark experience you’ve been searching for. The quaint town twinkling by the light of sparkling radiance. The candles along the streets. The shops that carry all kinds of unique, locally made goods only available in Dillsboro. The kindest people you’ll ever meet who are happy to see you.

Dillsboro Lights & Luminaries encompasses all of that and more. The festival started in 1983 as a way to celebrate the holidays and has been going strong for 40 years.

There is a calming, magical ambiance at this festival. There are white lights Christmas lights everywhere, plus 2,500 candles in white paper bags along every street. It’s like you stepped out of your life and into a time from many years ago. The bagged lights are taken from a Scandinavian custom of lighting the way for the Christ Child.

There are carolers and horse and buggy rides. Santa & Mrs. Claus are available for timeless Dillsboro, NC Christmas photos. Nearly every shop sells handmade goods from local artists or vintage items like cast iron cooking pans, antique furniture, and iron-wrought bed frames.

There are shops that look like the North Pole exploded inside. Think cookies, hot apple cider, and candy. I finally had to put a stop to my kids eating their monthly allotment of cookies all in one night.

And for myself, I was elated to find a grown-up nativity set while browsing at one of the Christmas-themed shops. Everyone was so kind and helpful and wishing us “Merry Christmas”.

It all felt authentic and genuine and just lovely.

Where to Eat During Lights & Luminaries

There are a handful of restaurants in the small town that have everything from BBQ to pub grub to Greek and Italian cuisine. We chose the Quirky Birds Treehouse & Bistro because it looked really cute. We walked into a very cozy dining room with friendly employees. We had nachos, vegetarian chili, pizza, and grilled cheese. It was great! The nachos were my favorite as they had guacamole, cheese, chili, and sour cream. I thought the prices were reasonable, around $7-$12/person.

Dillsboro is small but mighty when it comes to food. Haywood Smokehouse is one of the Top 25 BBQ Restaurants in the country. We weren’t able to try it, but it looks amazing. Next time!

Be sure to stop by the Dillsboro Chocolate Factory where you’ll be greeted by an array of handmade chocolates, fudge, and coffee.

Where to Enjoy the Outdoors in Dillsboro

Dillsboro is close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, home to nearly 900 miles of hiking trails. It’s also only a 20-minute drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, where you get to places like Waterrock Knob, the 16th highest mountain in the Eastern United States.

High Falls Lake Glenville

Cashiers, the Land of the Waterfalls, and a big favorite of us at Kidding Around, is about 40 minutes from Dillsboro. There are no shortage of gorgeous hikes and waterfalls to explore there.

The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad

As we pulled into our hotel, the Best Western Plus River, we saw the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad train, and it was so cool! It was chugging along right in front of us, smoke billowing out from the top. It turns out the railroad is only 20 minutes away in Bryson City.

If your family goes on the Polar Express ride during November and December, Dillsboro is the perfect spot to enjoy time together, especially if you make the trip during the Lights & Luminaries festival.

The hotel is beautiful, and you could walk to the town of Dillsboro if you wanted to. They have a heated indoor pool and hot tub, which we made good use of after eating all those cookies at the festival.

They also have a free, hot breakfast in the morning, which is pretty much equal to Christmas for my kids. They have eggs, bacon, biscuits, gravy, yogurt, and oatmeal. They also have a coffee maker that will make pretty much anything you want, juices, pastries, and our favorite: a pancake maker that looks like it came from The Jetsons. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the lobby has a beautiful fireplace and cozy chairs.

I think the thing I loved most about Lights & Luminaries was that it was the perfect opportunity to slow down, enjoy the magical season, and spend that quality time with my kids that I strive and long for. As I’m sure many parents can relate, the time we have with them goes so quickly. I want to make the most of that time, and this was a weekend well-spent.

Marvel at the Winterfest Light Show and Holiday Village at the Tryon International Equestrian Center Near Greenville, SC

Posted on | 1 Comment

Ever heard of the Winterfest Christmas lights in Tryon, NC? Only an hour from Greenville, SC, Winterfest is at the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Millions of lights are on display through more than two miles of dazzling lights at the drive-through light show. We have visited Winterfest each year for several years, and we’re bringing you all the 2025 details.

Kidding Around received media tickets so we could review the Christmas Wonderland and Winterfest Holiday Village. We have updated this review with 2025 dates and details.

Watch our Visit to Winterfest at TIEC

This visit video is from 2024.

About the Holiday Lights at TIEC

Featuring millions of lights synchronized to an orchestra of holiday music, Shadrack’s Drive-Through Light Show at Winterfest is one of the area’s best drive-through Christmas light displays.

With ice skating, s’mores, live music, entertainment, and more, Winterfest Holiday Village is a great add-on.

2025 Winterfest Dates at Tryon International

Shadrack’s Drive-Through Light Show: November 14, 2025 – January 3rd, 2026.

Winterfest Holiday Village: Fridays – Sundays from November 28th – December 23rd, 2025.

Tryon Christmas Lights
Christmas Wonderland | Tryon, NC

If you’re familiar with TIEC’s Saturday Nights Lights during warmer months, the light show and Winterfest Holiday Village are at the same location. Shadrack’s Drive-Through Light Show happens every night from 6-10 pm, November 14, 2025 through January 3rd, 2026. I’ve been to several drive-through light displays, and this is absolutely one of the very best ones out there.

What to Expect at Shadrack’s Christmas Drive-Through Lightshow

When you get off at the exit for the TIEC, you’ll see signs directing you toward the light show, which is across the bridge if you’re coming from Greenville. Hang a left after the exit for 74 West onto a gravel road. You’ll then follow the road under a bridge and follow directions to the entrance of the light show.

Tune your radio to 92.9 FM so you can listen to the music and watch the lights dance along.

Tryon Christmas Lights

Once you pay the entrance fee, turn off those headlights and start your adventure. This event is drive-thru only. There are millions of lights over about two-and-a-half miles. The road twists through tons of light displays, and both kids and adults will be awed by the lights, especially as they sync up to the Christmas music.

You can only go through once with your admission, so go slow and take it all in. It took us about 25 to 30 minutes to drive through the whole light show. Once you are past the synchronized lights, you head into the TIEC through a back entrance and enjoy silly and creative Santa light displays.

The first time I took my kids, they were 8 and 5. Now they are 11 and 8, and they still love it. They were blown away by all the lights and thought the music was upbeat and fun. The tunes are a mix of traditional and newer Christmas music. They wanted to go through it again when we were finished.

Admission to Shadrack’s Drive-Through Light Show varies by date and vehicle type with Eventbrite tickets starting at $47.92 for weekday visits for cars and trucks. Weekend visits for cars and trucks range from $53.58 for Friday/Sunday visits to $59.24 for Saturday visits. Express passes and season passes available.

Winterfest Holiday Village at the Tryon Resort

Winterfest is back! On Fridays – Sundays from November 28th – December 23rd, 2025, families can head to the Legends Plaza which is transformed into Winterfest Village.

Ice Skating

The ice skating rink is situated right in the middle of the action in the area where horses normally compete. Your ticket to ice skating includes an hour on the ice (real ice, by the way). And the ice skates are probably the nicest skates I’ve ever rented. You can also bring your own skates.

Eventbrite tickets for ice skating start at $25.30 each, and kids ages 4 and up can participate. You can purchase timed skating tickets online or at the gate. Ice skating at the TIEC will run through February 1, 2026. You can even have a birthday party or field trip here!

Ice skating at Tryon Winterfest

And don’t forget to get hot chocolate right next to the ice skate rental tent. It is delicious, nice and chocolatey. There is Christmas music playing and the atmosphere is festive and fun. People who don’t want to skate can hang out at the picnic tables next to the rink or enjoy the other activities in the same area such as the ice slide, bounce house, kids horse jumping area (they can jump over obstacles like horses), or mechanical horse.

Santa’s Workshop & Breakfast at Winterfest

Both kids and adults can take professional photos at Santa’s Workshop during Winterfest. Photos are for purchase, but they have such a cute and cozy setup along with an elf who will welcome you and introduce you to Santa.

Tryon Christmas Wonderland

The Tryon Resort also has Breakfast with Santa available Saturdays November 29th through December 20th and December 21-23, 2025. Seatings are at 8 am or 10:30 am. Put Christmas Town, USA On Your List of Places to Visit This Christmas Near Charlotte, NC

Are you looking for things to do in McAdenville at Christmas? This town is also known as Christmas Town, USA! Can you imagine living in a town where everyone decorated for Christmas and it was like somewhere out of a Hallmark Channel movie? Well, my friends, such a place does exist and it’s not that far away from the Upstate. If you are looking for the ultimate light display, McAdenville, NC is it. Enjoying it will only cost you gas money to get there, and once you arrive – you won’t believe your eyes.

2025 Lights in McAdenville, NC: Christmas lights run from December 1st through 26th, 2025. Lights come on at 5:30 pm daily.

Mcadenville, North Carolina Christmas Town USA

A few years ago, during the holiday season, we were driving north on I-85 and I noticed a lot of traffic getting off at an exit. It was the small town of McAdenville’s exit and there were even DOT signs directing traffic to exit a few ramps away.

I was intrigued, so as soon as we returned home I did an online search of the town. You have to see this epic Christmas light display to believe it!

Things to Do in McAdenville at Christmas: 2025

  • Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony @ 102 Main Street December 1st, 2025 | Ceremony starts at 5:30 PM, lights switched on at 6 PM
  • McAdenville Lights
    December 1st – December 26th, 2025 | From 5:30 PM until 10 PM each night
  • Christmas Parade @ Pharr Corporate Office Yule Log Parade
Thursday, December 11th, 2025 at 5:50 PM | The two-block parade will end at Legacy Park

Half a Million Lights Decorate McAdenville: Christmas Town, USA

McAdenville is known as the Christmas Town USA, and that’s not by mistake or without justification. This tiny town of just under 700 people takes the Christmas season very seriously with thousands and thousands of lights. It all started with nine trees being decorated by the Men’s Club.

The following year they did a few more, and that continued every year. By 2004 nearly 400 trees were decorated, and the town residents all decided to join in the fun. The joint effort resulted in almost half a million lights adorning the 1.3-mile stretch of road that visitors see as they pass through the town and the historic district.

This Christmas Town USA Facebook page is a wealth of information on the happenings in Christmas Town year-round. Craft fairs, holiday markets, and other events happen throughout the season.

When to Visit Christmas Town: NC Festivities & Christmas Celebrations

I highly suggest you try to visit this free attraction on a weeknight, Monday through Thursday. The town receives over half a million visitors in the few weeks the lights are turned on and it will be evident in the traffic. It’s still worth it, just be prepared to keep young children occupied in the traffic leading into town.

There are roadside vendors selling festival food and glowing toys. If making purchases isn’t something you plan to do, consider coming prepared with snacks and glow toys from the dollar store to satisfy kids while you wait.

The lights are on timers, so they turn on automatically at 5:30 pm, seven days a week regardless of weather conditions. They also shut off promptly at 10 pm. They will shut off regardless of how many cars are still driving through town, so I encourage you to get there early and take that into account if you arrive close to the time the lights shut off.

Walk or Drive to View the Lights in Downtown McAdenville

The display can be viewed by driving through the town or walking. If you decide to walk, there are several places to park – McAdenville Baptist Church, McAdenville Elementary School, the lakeside parking in the center of town, and Poplar Street. Parking at any of these locations is always FREE of charge.

The Lighting Ceremony is at the beginning of December, and the lights are on every night after that for the season. This will surely become your favorite tradition and get everyone in the holiday spirit!

Yule Log Parade in Christmas Town: NC Traditions

The Yule log parade is a tradition that has continued since 1950. The town’s children pull the Yule log on a sled to the open fireplace in the legacy park, where it is ignited, signaling the start of the Christmas festival. Santa will be in attendance for the festivities.

  • Yule Log Parade & Ceremony, Thursday, December 11th, 2025 – people will start to gather for the parade at 5 PM, with the lighting of the Yule Log at 6 PM.

During the light display, there are only three ways to enter the town. From the Upstate, take exit 22 on I-85N and follow the signs to McAdenville. Here’s the planning guide for Christmas Town 2024. It has parking and direction information.

The Annual Cashiers, NC Christmas Parade Is A Perfect Day Trip This Holiday Season

Posted on | 2 Comments

Love a small-town Christmas parade? Head to the Cashiers, NC Christmas parade this year! Celebrating in the mountains for the Cashiers Christmas Parade is a great day trip from the Upstate.

Cashiers Christmas parade

As much as we love being in Greenville for the holidays, there are just some events that prove to be too much for the younger kids. The Poinsettia Christmas Parade is one example. Between finding parking downtown, getting there early enough to get a good spot, keeping the kids occupied until the parade starts, and then managing the hungry little guys upon getting home late, parade day can be extremely taxing on this mom’s holiday spirit!

I can’t exactly remember how we first heard about our new holiday tradition, but our Christmas now includes a trip to the mountains for the Cashiers Christmas Parade!

This post was originally published on Femme au foyer

About the Cashiers Christmas parade

The 51st Cashiers Christmas Parade will kick off at 3 pm on Saturday, December 6th, 2025.

The parade includes floats, marching bands, musicians, vintage cars, fire engines, and even animals. The parade route starts at Frank Allen & 64 W, marches to the crossroads, and then turns onto 107 S to Cashiers School Rd. With ample parking and a mile of viewing, you’ll be sure to find the perfect vantage point to set up your chair. Just remember, some of the 50+ floats throw candy (as is a small-town tradition here in the Carolinas), so you’ll want to find a safe spot for the kids to gather up the goodies.

After the parade, be sure to explore The Village Green. A 12.5 acre park, The Village Green is an outdoor venue for community events, including concerts and festivals. In addition to the large public sculptures and seasonal gardens, the park also features a giant wooden children’s playground. If it isn’t too cold you could have a picnic, although my children are always rooting for snow, a not unheard of possibility in the mountains.

Happy kids at the Welcome to Cashiers NC sign

Plan Your Trip to Cashiers, NC

Cashiers is about 1½ hours from Greenville, so we’ll often combine the trip with other stops such as Rainbow Falls, a hike in Gorges State Park, or a ride on the Polar Express. For the parade route as well as rain date information, please visit the Cashiers Community information page.
