Greyrock Farms and Green Acres Produce is a legacy farming operation, dating back to a land grant from the King of England before the United States of America was even an independent nation. For generations, the Anderson family has been stewarding and developing this legacy for the Spartanburg community—first in Moore, and now at their new brand location Woodruff, SC.

Meet the Anderson Family

Farmer James Anderson, the current owner, grew up at Greyrock Farms and Green Acres Produce. Like most family farmers, he’s used to waking up before the sun to check on his animals, crops, and equipment. Doing so ensures a smooth start to the day’s operations, and although it’s hard work, he loves what he does and considers it a privilege worth preserving.

Over the past decade, Farmer James has shifted his attention towards education and family-friendly experiences. In a world where people are increasingly disconnected from their food supply, Farmer James sees the value in helping people understand where their food comes from, and connecting them with how it is produced.

His wife, Jennifer, and their daughters—Jenna, Jessica, and Julie—have joined the family in this work. When you call Greyrock Farms and Green Acres Produce, it’s more than likely that one of the family will be picking up the phone, ready to answer your questions!

Farm-Based Play for Kids

My own family absolutely LOVES the totally FREE farm-based play area for kids at Greyrock Farms and Green Acres Produce. Stretching from the roadside farm stand to the far end of the U-Pick field, this is a delightfully unique spot for kids to play anytime the farm is open.

Whether you’re looking for a free way to introduce your kids to life on a farm, or just wanting to swing by to see what this place is all about, the play area is perfect for a spontaneous family outing!

Playhouse at Greyrock Farms

The section nearest to the farm stand is heavily shaded by the large surrounding trees, and there are picnic tables, play houses, and—don’t miss this—a cleverly designed and cutely painted model cow where kids can try their hand at milking!

On our last visit, there was even a sweet baby cow that our kids could pet through an enclosure! Toddlers, preschoolers, and even bigger kids will love pretending to live life on the farm in this unique play space.

Nearby and in full sun, there are two larger play structures for bigger kids to enjoy. The first is an impressive out-of-commission combine that has been converted to a tube slide for kids! The second is a multi-level wooden fort, complete with a tube slide and tube tunnels for kids to climb and explore. From the top of the fort, your children will get a great view of both the U-Pick field and dairy barn.

A large covered picnic pavilion is also in the works, which groups and families will be able to rent out for birthday parties and special events, and there are high hopes for a corn maze in Fall! This whole play place is a growing aspect of the farm, so keep your eyes open for something new anytime you visit!

U-Pick and Buy Fresh: Spring Strawberries

Looking for even more hands-on educational fun? How about something local and nutritious for your kids? Check out their seasonal fresh produce and U-Pick options!

Each Spring, about mid-April, the strawberry harvest begins! Fresh produce becomes available for sale in the Greyrock Farms and Green Acres Produce farm stand.

There are gallon and half-gallon buckets of fresh, pre-picked strawberries available daily, along with row after row of jams, dressings, and other farm-to-table goods.

Prefer U-Pick? The U-Pick strawberry field is directly behind the storefront, and this usually wraps up in early June.

Fall Pumpkins

Then in Fall, there is the much-anticipated pumpkin harvest! Who doesn’t love to visit a local pumpkin patch with your kids? I know I do! With big orange pumpkins growing all around, this is such a perfect place to take some family photos and make sweet family memories. Your kids will love picking their own pumpkins, or you can purchase one that’s pre-picked pumpkins to take home! Pumpkin season typically runs September through October each year.

The farm stand and U-Pick field are usually open 7 days week, with limited hours on Sundays. Follow Greyrock Farms and Green Acres Produce on Facebook for announcements on seasonal openings, closures, and special events!

Educational Farm Tours

Greyrock Farms and Green Acres Produce now offers educational farm tours in both Spring and Fall, booking with local schools, homeschool groups, churches, and others!

Tractor wagon ride at Greyrock

Tours start with a tractor ride around the farm, and guests ride in a covered wagon complete with bench-style seating and safety railings all the way around.

Your guide will explain the equipment, facilities, and farm features you see along the way, and you can expect to receive a wonderful introduction to daily life on a dairy farm and the agricultural processes of planting, growing, and harvesting in-season crops.

The absolute highlight of this tour has to be the live demonstration of milking a cow. Right now, the milking demonstration is done just beside the dairy barn, but starting in Fall 2025, the dairy barn will open to visitors and become part of these fantastic tours! Don’t forget to visit the farm-based play place afterwards, so your kids will have the chance to practice milking a cow on the farm’s custom interactive model!

Farm tours are available with advance booking for groups of 20 or more. At the time of this writing, student tickets are priced at $10 and adult tickets at $8. In the Spring, children’s farm tour tickets also include a pint-sized U-Pick basket, so they can pick their own seasonal produce to take home! In Fall, children’s tickets include a visit to the pumpkin patch, so they can take one home to paint, carve, or otherwise enjoy!

Morning and afternoon tours are available, and booking early in the season is highly recommended. Word is getting out, and these tours are booking fast!
