Disappearing children, secret laboratories that harbor a gateway to a parallel world, young ladies with an affinity for waffles, these all amount to some pretty scary stuff going on in Hawkins, Indiana.
For fans of the 1980s science fiction hit Stranger Things, a weekend trip to the troubled Indiana town would sound like fun, except for the driving distance. The good news for fans of the Netflix hit Stranger Thing, is that it’s filmed just around the corner in Atlanta. The even better news is that there are a good number of recognizable locations that you can visit!
Hawkins National Laboratory, Evil Ground Zero on Stranger Things

This is a working set, and there were crews filming when we visited. In reality, this is a former psychiatric hospital. Making this location all the more interesting and unnerving to visit. Note: The Briarcliff campus has faced redevelopment and potential demolition plans in recent years. Check current access conditions before visiting.

Reader Kristen cautions that the Gwinnett mall doesn’t want people taking photos or videos down the vacant wing of the mall used for filming. However, they do sometimes allow it.

The Building is locked, but the “Upside hole” is still in the wall for photo ops. Reader Kristen says when visiting this location, someone was playing an episode shot at the school on their phone, so locations could be recognized.
Update: The former Patrick Henry High School building used for filming has since been demolished. Fans still visit the site to pay tribute to the iconic location.

The city of Atlanta transformed the former Bellwood Quarry into Atlanta’s largest park, opened as Westside Reservoir Park in August 2021 and renamed Shirley Clarke Franklin Park in 2025 in honor of former mayor Shirley Clarke Franklin. Two Bellwood Quarry viewing areas offer dramatic overlooks of the 35-acre reservoir, perfect for Stranger Things fans seeking that iconic landscape. The quarry also supplies the city with two billion gallons of drinking water.
Fans of the AMC show The Walking Dead will recognize the quarry from the first season of the series. It was also featured in the Hunger Games movie.
