SCCT’s Madagascar A Musical Adventure is Theatre the Whole Family will Love

Posted on | No Comments

Looking for family fun this week? South Carolina Children’s Theatre’s Madagascar, A Musical Adventure is playing at the Peace Center’s Gunter Theatre. My son and I saw the show this morning and we’re going to tell you all about this fun performance filled with music, comedy, dancing and fun for all.

Thank you to our sponsor the South Carolina Children’s Theatre for providing tickets to this performance so we could review this great show for our readers!

Madagascar A Musical Adventure

The Story

If you’ve seen the Dream Works Animation Motion Picture, Madagascar the story line of SCCT’s Madagascar, A Musical Adventure will be very familiar. Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippo and the hilariously hypochondriac Melman the giraffe are on display at the Central Park Zoo in New York City. Spurred on by the ideas of those famous plotting penguins, Marty decides to head via train for the wilds of Connecticut. However, as his friends follow to rescue him they all get a little more than they had bargained for as they end up on a ship. Thanks to the penguins meddling, the animals find themselves washed up on a beach in Madagascar where they learn being in the wild is a lot different than the zoo. They meet the famous lemur King Julian, enjoy some dancing and hospitality. But what Alex the lion really wants is a steak, not seaweed on a stick. And the more hungry he gets, the more his friend Marty, the zebra, starts to look like a steak.

The Characters

My son’s favorite character in this show was Melman the giraffe. His constant remarks about MRIs, colds, sciatica nerve pain and more really added many layers of humor to the performance. We also liked his costume and the platform shoes that made him just a bit taller than his friends. The costumes in general were pretty creative, and if truth be told, the costumes, lights and sets was the thing that my son talked about the most after the show. He’s 8 years-old and loved to figure out how things work. That just goes to show you, there’s something for everyone at SCCT’s productions!

We also really enjoyed the penguins and King Julian’s “I Like to Move It” song. I remembered this song most from the New Year’s Eve Countdown Netflix puts up each year featuring King Julian. Because my kids don’t just watch it once to ring in the New Year. We have to watch over and over and over, because they think it is so funny. Anyway, the choreography for this dance was really fun, and they even performed it again at the end of the show and invited the audience to stand up and dance, too.

Who should see Madagascar A Musical Adventure?

We think children of all ages would enjoy this show. The performance lasts about an hour with no intermission, so if your young child would have difficulty sitting that long, this might not be the best show for them. Also, a mom note: The dialogue in the play uses, “What the heck!” several times which is not a phrase allowed in my house. Realizing all parents are different, with different rules and expectations, I just wanted to point that out.

Your Family is Sure to Love the Birds and Bridges at Timmons Park

Posted on | No Comments

Are you searching for a park to visit that includes more than just a playground? KAG contributor Deborah gives us the scoop on Timmons Park, a neighborhood park offering way more than a climbing structure and swings.

[adrotate banner=”250″]

Discover Timmons Park

“Look! A Hawk!” My boys and I were enjoying a morning at the park when we spotted a hawk in the mature trees around the playground. The large bird of prey was calling to another hawk that we heard in the distance. Then, we saw that second hawk fly into the same tree. Where are we?

Timmons Park is tucked away in the established neighborhood of Overbrook. Within Greenville’s city limits, this park is full of large trees that provide you with ample shady places to rest and listen to the songs of the birds.

Timmons Park in Greenville

The park has an excellent frisbee golf course. Even if you do not want to play, the trail is a great place to walk your dog, and children love getting to cross the stream on the various bridges. Just watch out for frisbees! Keep your children out of the stream, because we spotted a large snake while we were there.

The playground has two slides, monkey bar rings, a metal climbing structure and a four-way bouncing structure. There is a large swing set across the one-way street. The playground is not shaded, but there is a shaded section at the top of the slides.

Bring a picnic to enjoy in the covered pavilion that is beside the large swing set. The city is currently building a new restroom between the lighted tennis courts and baseball field. You can park in front of the playground, across from the pavilion, or down by the baseball field and restrooms.

My Kids Loved the Playground at Staunton Bridge Park

Posted on | No Comments

Have you been looking for a new playground? Staunton Bridge Community Center Park might be new to you, and it’s definitely worth a visit. This park is just 5 miles southwest of Greenville. Read on for the Kidding Around tips on when to visit Staunton Bridge Park and what to expect.

Discover Staunton Bridge Park

Staunton Bridge Community Center built an amazing playground behind the center. You can’t see it from the road. When you arrive, drive up to the center and take the road on the left around the building.

You will discover a bright orange and blue playground filled with things to climb and find as well as lots of blue slides and a large swing set. My boys were ecstatic and we played for an hour and a half. Greenville Rec was there tending the large green space behind the playground which could be a great place for playing catch.

There is no shade, so come early in the day. Bring water and put on your sunscreen. There are restrooms and a water fountain inside the center, but we had to walk around to the front doors to get in. There were a couple of benches around the playground but no picnic tables.

Add this playground to your sunny day activities this summer. And, stop by QT on your way home for some huge ice cream cones!

Westside Park Offers an Indoor Pool, Playground and More

Posted on | No Comments

Near Berea? Passing between Greenville and Easley? Then you might want to make a stop at Westside Park! KAG Contributor Lindy Wilson tells us about this park which features a wide variety of different amenities. One of the most notable of those is the indoor pool at the Westside Aquatic Complex.

[adrotate banner=”250″]

A little about Westside Park

The playground at this park is right next to the pool building, so it’s easy to explore upon arriving or leaving but its tucked around the corner enough that you can sneak past if need be. We played there A LOT when we were taking swim lessons! They do birthday pool parties in the aquatic center if you’re interested. They also teach swim lessons throughout the year and also offer sailing lessons. Older kids can join their swim team. Unique to this pool is the Fun Zone inflatable play area floating in the water! There is also a small gym offering group exercise classes.

However should your day only accommodate adventures on dry land, there is a rather well equipped playground. Their playground has some nice shade trees and a few bench tables right along the edge. It makes for a good picnic spot while still being in sight of the kids. The playground is fairly large so this is very important!

Westside Park playgrounds in Greenville

There are some nice swings here which always seem to be a treat. There’s more than your typical playground has so everyone can have one! They also seem like the higher type so nice for big kids who want to propel themselves into outer space!

If you have a climber, they’ll love it. A wide arrange of things to hang off and climb on abound. It’s way beyond your everyday monkey bars here!

Beyond the pool/gym complex and the playground, there are also some baseball fields and other grassy areas for a pick up game. If you have an event coming up, you can rent out their shelters as well. Be sure to check it out!

My Daughter’s Super Fun Birthday Party at Pigtails & Crewcuts

Posted on | No Comments

KAG team member Elizabeth shares her family’s birthday party experience at Pig Tails and Crew Cuts.  For more great birthday ideas, check out Kidding Around Greenville’s Ultimate Birthday Party Guide.

Thank you to Pigtails & Crewcuts for hosting my daughter’s birthday party in exchange for this review.  Even though the party was given in trade, all opinions are my own!

Okay so I think I got the title of this post wrong.  It should be “my daughter’s super fun and SUPER EASY birthday party at Pigtails & Crewcuts” but that seemed a little long.  And I really needed an easy party this year.  You see, when my daughter turned 7 she wanted a party at home.  What I expected to be a low-key party ended up being 14 little girls, a cheer theme party, complete with high school cheerleaders.

I scoured pintrest for birthday party ideas for weeks.  I spent the entire week prior to the party making pom poms out of streamers and cutting megaphones out of poster board for 14 little girls to decorate and scream into. (What was I thinking?!?)  I enlisted the services of a few high school cheerleaders and begged my friend to stay and help me manage the bash.

The girls made megaphones, learned cheers, danced, even had their faces painted. The party was fun; really fun.  I, however, was completely exhausted when it was finally over.  And my house was a wreck.  I had spent a ridiculous amount of time and way more money than I had intended.

So when my daughter’s 8th birthday rolled around I had one firm rule – the party was not going to be at home.  Nope.

Before the party

My daughter is a girly girl.  She loves playing dress up, dons lip gloss any chance she gets and adores getting her nails done, even if only on my bathroom floor.  So it seemed like a no-brainer to hold her party at a salon where she and her little buddies could be pampered and play dress up.  And my excitement was only heightened when, after chatting over the party plans with the salon owner, I realized all I had to do was bring cupcakes.  They would handle the rest. Sign me up!

So rather than spending weeks getting ready for the party I spent, ummm, maybe an hour picking up cupcakes for the party.  The helpful staff at Pigtails & Crewcuts took care of everything else.  It was exactly what I was hoping for!

Party time

We arrived a bit early so my daughter could get all dolled up before her guests arrived.  She had plenty to choose from – would she be a princess or a diva?  She even had the option of a pirate but she’s way too fancy for that!  She got her hair styled in a way her mom could never pull off and her nails painted exactly as she requested.  When her guests arrived she looked like the little diva I know her to be all too well!

After each and every little girl got dressed up, hair styled perfectly and nails manicured to her specifications they posed for a group picture.  I mean, what’s cuter than a group of little girls all dolled up for a night out?  Or, in this case, a night in!

The group picture needed a fancy frame to be proudly displayed by every guest so, of course, there was a fun craft involved.  Each guest was given a wood picture frame and more pretty decorating options than they could handle!  They got serious about picture frame decorating and every girl went home with a keepsake photo in the frame they created – perfect!

Last came singing, cupcakes, lots of hugs goodbye and, just like that, the party was over.  Or almost.  My daughter had one special party extra – her big night ended with getting her ears pierced!  Not part of the party package but saved us the trip to the mall we had scheduled for the next day, so a win-win if you ask me!  After that was done, we packed up and headed home.  It was the perfect party for my now 8 year old daughter & the completely stress-free party I was looking for.  No stress, no mess for me to clean up, and the girls all had a blast!

5 Tips for Visiting the Greenville Drive

Posted on | 2 Comments

It’s baseball season and in Greenville, SC, that means it’s also the perfect opportunity for some quality family time at an affordable price!

Since moving to the Upstate, KAG guest contributor Lauren Lochel had been looking forward to visiting Flour Field and seeing the Greenville Drive play a game. Lucky for us, they did not disappoint! She shares with us her trips and tricks for enjoying a Greenville Drive game with your family.

1. Check for Promotions

It happened to be “Bark in the Park” during our visit, which worked out perfectly for our family! All the dogs were on leashes and very friendly! This not only provided a good distraction for our 22 month old, but we enjoyed seeing all the furry friends as well. However, if you have allergies or a child with a fear of dogs, this would not be a great game for you to attend! This information can easily be found on the Greenville Drive website.

2. Take Advantage of FREE Parking

Park at County Square (for FREE!). You can easily walk from this lot OR you and your family can enjoy a free Trolley Ride! It was a very short wait and we enjoyed it. The Trolley also runs throughout the entire game so whenever you need to head home, just head back out and catch a ride back to your car!

3. Take What You Need

The Greenville Drive has changed their bag policy so you’ll want to read it closely before you go to the stadium. Gone are the days of being able to walk right in with a diaper bag stuffed with everything you care to bring!

4. Beware and Be Aware in the Play Area

With good intentions, the rules state that children should be under a certain height and should be supervised while playing. Unfortunately, neither of these things were happening on Sunday afternoon! My husband and I took a couple of turns taking our daughter to run and play, but it didn’t last long because it was a little chaotic! Stick close by your little one if they need a play break…this is not an area I would advise one to sit and watch!

5. Get Tickets in Advance

The Sunday we went also happened to be Masters Sunday so the crowd was a little lighter than usual. My husband went back on a Friday (fireworks) night with his brother and the game was sold out! Standing room only!

Has your family been to a Greenville Drive game? What tips do you have?

Asia Pacific Supermarket: This is Where You Find Authentic Chinese Cooking in Greenville

Finally, a Chinese restaurant and Bubble Tea bar in Greenville that goes beyond the usual General Tso’s Chicken and Beef and Broccoli. Although we love our Chinese American fare, we have sorely missed the freshness of authentic Chinese cooking.

About Asia Pacific Supermarket

I first visited Asia Pacific Supermarket with a good friend from Hong Kong, now also based in Greenville. She knows about my hankering about finding an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Upstate. I have been back many times since, to shop and to eat, and have never been disappointed. Most visitors come to visit the aisles of the 14,000-square-foot supermarket, but the real gem is the non-descript restaurant quietly located right behind the cashier.

The restaurant is bright, spacious, and very clean. The staff is efficient and friendly. You may find your supermarket cashier sometimes taking your order after she rings you up at the aisles. You will also probably meet gracious Alva Mak, the proprietor, who hails from Hongkong, hence the predominant Cantonese flavors in their dishes. Alva mentions that they’ve only been open for six months and the response has been good. Located a few blocks from Greenville Technology College, she says they are frequented by students and Asian regulars.

Cantonese cooking consists of wok-fried and steamed dishes. But what I miss the most are the roasted meats. And yes, they have roasted duck and Char Siu or roast pork. We’ve tried the duck and it’s to die for!

Other dishes we’ve tried are their pickled mustard with pork and bean sprouts and eggplant with pork. Unlike Western cooking, the vegetables take center stage alongside the meats and chopped up in small bites.

The eggplant dish was delicious and actually overshadowed the pork (in a good way of course).

On their menu is a long list of seafood items, beckoning for me to come back. Pan-fried fish with tofu, spicy salt and pepper grouper, seafood with rice noodles, spicy salt, and pepper shrimp, and so on. I’ve tried the fillet Tilapia fish with black beans. The saltiness was jarring at first till I remembered that it must and should be eaten with white rice. Dishes are priced between $10 to $12.

Chatting with Alva, she points out that their menu is a work in progress and consists of daily specials. If you don’t find one to your liking, there’s also the option of having fresh seafood from their fish tanks and have them prepare it as you wish. Now that’s really bringing me back to Asia!

Lice are a Nightmare and Greenville Has a New Clinic to Take Care of Them

Posted on | 1 Comment

Lice is one of a parent’s worst nightmares once their kids enter school. The inevitability of a household with school-age children dealing with lice is pretty high. Enter the Lice Clinics of America, which I didn’t even know was a thing until learning they opened a location in Greenville. It’s like a franchise restaurant, except for lice prevention and treatment, and happens to be the largest network of urgent care lice treatment clinics in the country.

So instead of Googling about lice prevention and what to do when a child comes home with lice, I figured I’d go right to the experts and ask all my lice-related questions. Heather Purtle is the clinic owner of the Lice Clinics of America location in Greenville and she graciously answered my questions.

What you need to know about lice

KIDDING AROUND GREENVILLE: How common is head lice in elementary, middle, high school and college? What are the chances that parents will have to deal with lice?

HEATHER PURTLE: It’s estimated there are 6 to 12 million new cases of head lice diagnosed in children ages 3 to 11 each year in the United States. To put that number in perspective, 1 in 20 children have lice at all times. And approximately 40% of people will get head lice; a few decades ago only 4% of the population got head lice. This dramatic increase is due to the evolution of Super Lice, which are lice that are resistant to traditional treatments. Just like antibiotic resistance, lice have evolved and they now can survive traditional, over-the-counter, pesticide treatments.

Head lice cases have not been tracked as closely in older children, teenagers and adults so there aren’t accurate statistics at this time. But unpublished studies show a dramatic increase in cases in teenagers and adults, as well as children. This is related to the prevalence of Super Lice and also could be related to technology. People regularly gather in close proximity around video games, computer screens, and take selfies with heads pressed together. It is likely that once there is a head lice infestation in the house, a parent, caregiver or other sibling also will become infested and moms especially are vulnerable.

KAG: Lice are one of parenting’s worst nightmares. How does Lice Clinics of America help parents deal with this?

HP: Lice Clinics of America offers a professional, head screening as the first step in the process. (And very good news- many more clients are negative than positive!) To give you an accurate diagnosis, we carefully head screen clients, putting all samples under our high- powered microscopes. If we find anything, you will see it and we can advise you on your best treatment options.

If someone in your family is positive, Lice Clinics of America recommends the entire family should be screened, as lice quickly spread in families or other group living situations, like college dorms or retirement homes. If someone is positive, Lice Clinics of America offer in- clinic treatments that take about an hour to be lice- free or DIY, take home options to use over a 10-day period. Both options are highly effective, non-toxic and pesticide- free. In contrast, traditional, over-the-counter treatments are only 25% effective and typically contain pesticides that have been linked to some scary side-effects.

Lice Clinics of America is the largest lice network in the world, with approximately 300 locations. It is a company dedicated to using science to solve lice. If you ever Google “head lice,” you most likely will be overwhelmed by the- often contradictory- advice. Lice Clinics of America- Greenville will give you the best, current practices and save you a lot of unnecessary worry and work.

How does Lice Clinics of America work?

KAG: Can you tell me a little bit about what Lice Clinics of America does?

HP: Sure! Lice Clinics of America is best known for our quick, effective cure for eliminating Super Lice and their eggs through a 3-step process involving an FDA-cleared medical device, comb-out and topical rinse.

Step 1: There isn’t a shampoo, oil or spray on the market that effectively treats nits (lice eggs). But a scientist at the University of Utah discovered if you remove the water in the eggs, it kills them. He invented our exclusive, FDA-cleared medical device, the AirAllé. It is the only FDA-cleared, medical device in the upstate for treating lice and eggs. This heated- air treatment takes 20-30 minutes and has been clinically proven to kill the living lice and 99.2% of their eggs (nits). It is the only treatment that effectively kills nits.

Step 2: The purpose of the AirAllé device is to kill the lice and eggs through dehydration, but dead lice and eggs will remain in the hair after treatment. Our technicians will do a post-treatment comb-out with a professional lice comb (which usually takes about 30 minutes) to remove the dead lice and eggs.

Step 3: The technician will apply a post-treatment topical rinse to ensure the eradication of the lice. Using this procedure, we guarantee you will leave our clinic lice-free.

Lice prevention

KAG: If a parent is notified of a child that has lice in their child’s class, should they bring their child to a Lice Clinic of America location to get checked? What precautions should they take when they get that email?

HP: If you’re concerned, call Lice Clinics of America for a head screening appointment. Lice Clinics of America can spot lice a lot earlier using our microscopes than you can with the naked eye. But it’s still important for parents to perform frequent head checks on children, especially if you’ve been notified that a child’s classmate has lice. If you are unsure how to check your child’s head, call Lice Clinics of America for a head screening appointment and we’ll screen your child, while teaching you how to repeat the process in the future.

The most important thing to keep in mind when preventing head lice is to avoid head-to-head contact with others. It’s estimated more than 98% of infestations occur from direct head to head contact: hugs, horseplay, sports and selfies are perfect opportunities for transfers. It is extremely rare to get lice from secondary objects such as hats, brushes, helmets, etc. But as a precaution, we recommend that these objects not be shared.

KAG: How fast can Lice Clinics of America see a child? Can the child be treated immediately if they have head lice and can parents get everything they need to combat lice at the clinic – like they don’t need to run around to different stores to find what they need?

HP: Lice Clinics of America operates by appointment. In order to be checked and treated for lice, all you have to do is book an appointment and come into our professional lice removal clinic. In as little as one hour, with no pain or toxic chemicals involved, you or your child will leave lice-free, guaranteed. Everything you need is located at our clinic; you do not need to go to different stores to purchase products.

Other information you should know

KAG: Why did Lice Clinics of America choose Greenville as the next city to open in?

HP: Lice Clinics of America locations are individually owned and operated. Many owners have had some experience with lice, which led them to look for better solutions. I’m the same. Last year, my elementary-aged children gave me lice. I, neurotically, stayed up all night searching for solutions and scrubbing my house. During my research, I realized that the best treatment in the world (AirAlle′) was not available in the Upstate. To my children’s great horror, I bought the rights and opened a clinic to serve the Upstate. My employees and I have been overwhelmed by how rewarding it is to help families and individuals during this short-term, life crisis!

KAG: How much does it cost for an appointment at Lice Clinics of America and do you take insurance?

HP: The prices for the various treatment options include:

Screening and consultation — $20 (This fee is waived if you choose an AirAlle′ treatment.)

Signature AirAllé® treatment— $199

Express AirAllé® treatment— $159
