About Upstate Archery Academy
The history of the Upstate Archery Academy is pretty fascinating. It’s a family-owned business where both owners – husband and wife Shelley and Jack Williamson – are natives of Greenville and essentially started the business to meet a need for archery instruction.
When their daughter was in 7th grade at Riverside Middle School, she took an archery class during gym and fell in love with it. Her dad researched how to become certified as an instructor and while the middle school wasn’t interested in pursuing archery as an official sport for students, once his daughter got to high school, they were able to form a team and start competing.
Word got around that Jack was trained as a coach and people in the community started to inquire about lessons. After offering archery lessons at their home for awhile, Shelley was able to partner with the City of Greer to offer instruction both outdoors and indoors at one of their facilities a few times a week. But people kept coming and Shelley and her husband realized they needed to find a space of their own to host classes.
Learning how to shoot
It took three years to obtain the space they are in now right off of Wade Hampton Boulevard. The space is perfect for them as it was a former shooting range and easy to convert to an archery range. They opened there in 2023 and have continued to grow.
They offer homeschool classes, adult and youth classes, camps, date nights, birthday parties, corporate events, monthly open range hours, and private lessons. They also have a great shop where you can purchase a wide range of archery equipment. And they fix bows as well.
Classes, Lessons, Camps, and Dates
The main thing I learned from Shelley is that anyone can learn archery. She is adamant that the sport is for anyone who wants to learn no matter your background or skill or age. She is so welcoming and encouraging and patient that it’s hard not to believe that you can shoot bullseyes all day long.
The family-owned business offers classes for adults, youth and homeschoolers, and leagues. You can do a one-hour date night here, which I think is just so much fun. There are plenty of nearby restaurants, so you could easily pair this with dinner and make it a unique adventure.
Classes and events vary in price so follow the links to see what suits you best. Classes are usually in the afternoons so people who work or kids who are in school can come and enjoy the range.

You could also hold a birthday party or private event here. There is plenty of space to bring your own food, and Shelley is a pro at setting up the place to cater to whatever you’d like to do.
Upstate Archery hosts events, which are listed on their website. These can include things like tournaments or league nights.
Open Range and Memberships
Like a gym, Upstate Archery hosts open range hours where guests can pay for an hour ($10.50) or an all-day pass ($15.50). There is plenty of space to practice here so the open range is fun for anyone who has taken a basic class and wants more time to hone their skills.
If you don’t have equipment, that’s okay. You can rent equipment from Upstate Archery for around $22-$28. Or if you’d like to purchase your own equipment, they have a beautiful selection available right at the shop.
For open range sessions, you can pay by the hour or day or purchase a three or six-month membership.

I love learning new skills and while I have shot a bow and arrow before, I had not ever done so in a range with the kind of equipment we were using. It was fun to learn how to use it and how best to get that bullseye – which both my daughter and I did!
I also really like how accessible the sport is and that it is a family-owned business. Shelley and Jack are there daily and can answer pretty much any questions you have. There are also so many options to get started or dip your toes into the sport to see if you like it and want to pursue it.
The atmosphere is totally relaxed and safety is a huge part of what you learn when visiting (for good reason). There are so few places to learn archery in the Upstate and it’s obviously a growing sport given how much interest Upstate Archery has had over the past several years. And honestly, it’s just a super cool skill to learn!

Getting back into the swing of things for a new school year is no joke. It is hard. The early mornings, the bus schedule, the lunch packing, the homework, the extracurricular sports, the chalkboard first day or school photos. It can be overwhelming, which is why we turned to the most knowledgeable group of people we know to ask for tips: our readers. Here’s what they said.
#1 Start the bedtime/wake-up time school schedule a couple of weeks before school starts
This was one of the top pieces of advice from our readers. Getting up early on day 1 is zero fun in and of itself. If your kid(s) has been doing it for at least a week or so, it’s a tad bit easier.
Consider planning a couple fun outings the week prior to school starting such as going out for donuts to make the earlier rising time an adventure.
Practice lunch by packing the lunch box and setting a timer for the amount of time that your child has for lunch at school.
#2 Pick out the clothes for school for the entire week.
Multiple readers said they help their kids to lay out clothes for the whole week on Sunday or tell their teens to do so themselves. One reader even had a brilliant idea to use hanging cubbies to put clothes for each day. And this is why we ask our readers these questions.
#3 Don’t buy a brand-new “back to school” wardrobe
The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans with school-age kids are spending upwards of $865 per kid on back-to-school supplies and clothing. That number is enormous, but it can be cut back without going all out for a new wardrobe for your kids. There are tons of consignment shops and sales to make use of to help get your kids a new-to-them wardrobe.
Also, consider purchasing just a couple of outfits at the beginning of the school year versus an entire new wardrobe. Your kids might change their minds on what they want to wear after seeing what other kids are wearing, and the colder weather is just a couple of months away.
#4 Meal prep
Many of our readers noted that prepping meals ahead of time for the week is a lifesaver when getting back into the swing of things. One mom even prepares one big meal at the beginning of the week that can feed everyone for several nights and just switches up the sides to add variety.
Anything you can prepare the night before, such as packing lunches, will also make leaving the house on time in the morning much easier.
Setting up a breakfast station the week before with breakfast foods ready to go can also make the morning move smoothly. These make-ahead kid-friendly breakfast ideas may help!
#5 Take the “first day of ____ grade” pictures the day before!
As yes, the First Day of __ Grade Back to School photos. You know, the ones where you’re desperately trying to get your kid to school but then remember you want to memorialize the occasion but need a chalkboard and pen and paper and nothing else that you have right then but are already late? Yeah, those.
Do them the day before school starts. Reader Kerry says, “Just chill. The chalkboard thing doesn’t have to happen; neither does posting to social media. Let them dress for comfort instead of trying to dress to impress.” Another mom said she just has her kids hold up the number of fingers to correspond to the grade they are going into.

#6 Don’t schedule any appointments the first week of school
No doctor appointments. No dentist appointments. Nothing that will give you even more stress than you’re already handling. Schedule them for a few weeks out from the first day of school if you can.
#7 Use Alexa to help you remember things you/your kids need to do
One reader said she programs her Alexa device to set reminders about things she or her kids would likely forget, like when the library book is due, what day of the week her kid(s) need to wear gym shoes, or a reminder to plug in the Chromebook.
#8 Plug in that Chromebook
Be sure to plug in the Chromebook on Sunday night because going to school with a dead laptop is no fun.
#9 Keep the social life to a minimum
One mom said she has found that restricting weekend plans for the first few weeks of the school year has helped her kids to get the relaxation they need and helps them to focus on the new school year.
#10 Use your calendar to keep up with events
One mom said she plugs all of the school events into your calendar on her phone before the school year so she knows what to expect and can plan for events.
#11 Keep all school-related things in one place
Mom Stacy has this amazing idea: “I have a back-to-school binder. It has the school calendar and sections for each child for their supply lists and forms teachers send home for platforms the kids use, passwords, usernames, etc, and contact lists.
Anything important that’s sent home, especially in those early weeks, goes straight into the binder. The supply list stays, so I can touch base with the teacher throughout the year on possible extra needs or send in extras that are consumed quickly.”

About Sierra Nevada Brewery
On a gorgeous summer day, after a morning of hiking, a beer was in order. Sierra Nevada has been a favorite brewery of mine for a while (hello, Kellerweiss and Porter!) because they not only make excellent beer, but it’s totally affordable as well. I had heard the rumors that the brewery was incredible, and I needed to see it for myself.
To say I was floored would be an understatement. This place is stunning. From the pavers in the ample parking lot to the aesthetics of the taproom and brewery to the garden full of sunflowers, tomatoes, and basil, Sierra Nevada Brewery is gorgeous – and fun!
Since we didn’t have a reservation for a tour (more on that in a bit), we headed right for the taproom, a cavernous space of tables with barstools and high tops. Of course, a bar offering all of the brewery’s signature beers on tap was at the center.
We opted to head outside, where there awaited us were welcoming tables, rocking chairs, Adirondack chairs, a large green space, gardens, cornhole games, and an outdoor beer bar.

Dining Options
You have a few options when it comes to dining or enjoying a beer at the Sierra Nevada Brewery. First, you can be seated at the dining room for table service. This is where the majority of the food is available. But, it’s also where, on a busy Saturday, you will wait a while for a table.
As you enter the taproom, if you do not want to dine in, bypass this line and head to the right. You’ll see a sign for the beer line. Here’s my tip- skip this one. Upstairs, there is another bar with the same offerings. We found there was no line up there!
You can also purchase your favorite beer or hard kombucha at the Back Porch, which is also another place where you can order some food. The Back Porch offers some snacks like nachos and a few other items like hot dogs and salads.
Sierra Nevada Brewery is Kid-Friendly
On the way to grab a Southern Summer Saison, I noticed an enclosed playground with sand tables, a sandbox, a chalkboard, a picnic table, and an umbrella stand. This place thought of it all. There is also a huge green space by the stage, where lots of kids were running and playing.
Sierra Nevada offers a full menu of delectable items inside their tap room dining room and a smaller menu for their outdoor bar. Think huge bar pretzels with mustard, wood-fired pizza, and bison hog dogs with pale ale chili.
Lower Park
If you go to the left of the stage and walk about a quarter mile down a beautiful trail, you’ll come to the secret Lower Park at the brewery. This is a beautifully shaded area with hammocks, lawn games, snacks and beer for sale, and picnic tables.
This area was hard hit by Hurricane Helene, and the French Broad River flooded it badly. You can see the water line, and it’s probably about 40 feet up one of the trees. But the brewery cleaned it up and reopened it in June 2025. I feel like it’s even better than before! When I visited that month, that’s where my kids and I hung out the most because it’s just so peaceful and fun. We played all the lawn games and relaxed in the hammocks.

My family and I grabbed our beers and strolled through the garden, admiring the gorgeous flowers and vegetable garden. We took up a game of cornhole for a while, which was awesome. It’s really fun to play the game while drinking good beer in the garden of Sierra Nevada Brewery.
By the time we were done, the band was about to take the stage, so we hung out in the shade and relaxed to the tunes of great music. Before we left for the day, we had to check out the “high gravity” beer section upstairs, which had even more tables and rocking chairs, and indoor cornhole games. It was a work of art and overlooked the entire outdoor area, main stage, and gardens.

So apparently these tours are crazy popular. We weren’t able to get a reservation for when we wanted to go so I have to go back. Obviously.
The Brewhouse Tour is a 45-minute tour for persons 12+ years and includes a tour of the brewery and four beer samples. This one costs $12.10 per person.

Historic downtown Sevierville is a cute place to walk around and check out the shops, restaurants, and a gorgeous butterfly mural. In recent years, historic downtown Sevierville has been given a makeover with larger sidewalks, landscaping, new roofs, and new entertainment and restaurants. It still holds an early 1900s feel, which I really loved, but you can easily see that it’s on the way up.
Having walked in downtown Gatlinburg many times, downtown Sevierville is so quiet and calm. New shops and restaurants are opening up and I think that any family looking to escape the crowds will love strolling around on Bruce Street and Court Avenue.
Here are a few things that we really liked about historic downtown Sevierville:
Dolly Parton Statue
There is a bronze statue of a young Dolly Parton holding her guitar right in front of the gold-domed Sevier County Courthouse. Dolly grew up in Sevier County and the statue, created in 1987, honors the star in her hometown. This is just a cool photo op so that’s exactly what my kids and I did.

Right behind the Dolly Parton statue is the Sevier County Courthouse. You cannot miss this building. It was built in 1896 and was the first courthouse in Tennessee to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
If you ever see the Sevierville skyline, which you can definitely see from various roads that lead into downtown Sevierville, you cannot miss the gold domes.

Wings of Wander Mural
I love a good wall mural and the mural by Sevierville artist Pinkie Mistry at the little park in the heart of downtown Sevierville was just beautiful. It’s a huge monarch butterfly, a tribute to Dolly Parton’s song “Love is Like a Butterfly,” and is painted on the wall behind a large butterfly garden filled with Black-Eyed Susans, lilies, and milkweed. My daughters and I had a lot of fun taking photos in front of the mural!
There are other murals around historic downtown Sevierville as well, including one on the wall of The Pines Downtown.
Where to Eat in Sevierville, TN
We had so many excellent meals in Sevierville that it was hard to choose our favorite. I was so impressed with the quality, quantity, and creativity behind the dishes we had.
Buffalo Breakfast Company
I usually have no problems figuring out what to order off any menu. Buffalo Breakfast Company stumped me because everything – literally everything on that menu – looked amazing. I ended up getting a Ham Benny, their version of Eggs Benedict, which did not disappoint. My daughters got stuffed French toast and pancakes. I fought the urge to sneak bit and pieces of their breakfasts when they weren’t looking. You can’t go wrong ordering anything off this menu.

Pinchy’s Lobster & Rawbar
Pinchy’s was one of my favorite places that we ate at in Sevierville. Our server was excellent and the food was outstanding. It’s generally a seafood place but they do have food for kids (or adults) who don’t like seafood. My daughters got a fried chicken sandwich and mac & cheese. Both were huge hits.
I got the fish & chips and that fish was cooked perfectly and the fries were awesome. The pub nachos with blackened shrimp was also a huge win. They also have some picnic tables and lawn games, which are great for kids. Overall, 10/10!

Iron Forge Brewing Co.
Set back off the main road in Sevierville behind the Apple Barn lies Iron Forge Brewing Co, a brand new brewery and restaurant. The place is just beautiful with indoor and outdoor seating and a menu that is small but mighty.
The owners told me they thoughtfully picked their menu to give guests the very best of what they could offer for appetizers, entrees, salads, and desserts. I thought the menu was just the right size and wish my stomach was bigger because I could have ordered so many things off of it!
We ended up getting fried cheese curds to start, a strawberry salad, and three different smash burgers. Everything was amazing. I would a hundred percent go back for those cheese curds though plus order a hanging Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese because I have a weakness for soft pretzels.
All the beers at Iron Forge are brewed right on site. I tried a few and loved the lighter Bee Bait, a honey wheat ale. The brewery is both family-friendly and dog-friendly with a kids menu and outdoor games like cornhole and ax throwing (don’t worry, the axes are plastic). They also have Singo nights, which is bingo but with songs!

Flapjack’s Pancake Cabin
A true Southern pancake house, Flapjack’s has everything you could ever want for a hearty breakfast: pancakes, French toast, omelets, egg platters, chicken & waffles, skillets, and more. The pancakes we got were super fluffy and delicious. Service was excellent, friendly, and fast.
My youngest daughter loved the Jr. Bear pancakes, which are pancakes arranged and decorated to look like a bear. My favorite was my husband’s order of Banana Nut Pancakes and the candied bacon.
If Annie, the General Manager, is there, be sure to thank her if you like your meal. She is the sweetest person and strives so hard to make Flapjacks a place you want to come back to again and again.
They are open for breakfast and an early lunch so be sure to go in the mornings! And while Flapjack’s is a local eatery, they have several locations in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Sevierville, and even one in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Buc-ee’s
The iconic gas station convenience store is now open in Sevierville and it’s massive. With 74,000 square feet of retail space, you won’t find any shortage of culinary options here.
They have amazing brisket and pulled pork sandwiches, bakery items, salads, a wall of beef jerky, coffee, banana pudding, key lime pudding, and tons more. I’m not going to tell you how many times we went to Buc-ee’s on our trip to Sevierville but it was more than a couple of times!

Apple Barn & Cider Mill
Built in 1910, the Apple Barn & Cider Mill is one of Sevierville’s oldest establishments. There are even several apple trees around the property (you cannot do u-pick so don’t try). They have a huge barn full of homemade apple products, mixes, and home goods. They make their own apple cider, which you can buy by the gallon. They make their own cider donuts, hard cider, candy, and one of our favorites: ice cream.
The Ice Cream Factory at the Apple Barn opened in 1991 and is an old-fashioned creamery. It is a must-do when you visit Sevierville. We had such a hard time choosing what flavors to have.
I eventually went with Key Lime Pie and both my kids had a Rocky Road-type flavor. All the ice cream and baked goods are made right there so you’re getting everything as fresh as possible.
There is a restaurant as well there but we did not get a chance to try it. For those who love Christmas, visit the Christmas and Candle Shop.

Cruze Farm Dairy
For amazing, fresh ice cream, you need to go to Cruze Farms. It’s right next to Skyland Ranch and is oh-so-good. They have soft serve and change up their flavors so you never know what deliciousness will be waiting for you. Plus, the shop is like an old school soda shop, which is adorable, and has rocking chairs out front, which is always a win for me.

Speaking of soda shops, Red’s Soda Shop is a legit old school soda shop with stools at a bar, red leather booths, and a juke box. They serve us fresh deli sandwiches, hot dogs, milkshakes, and floats. I haven’t had a true ice cream float in years and the one we had there made up for lost time. Get a float from Red’s.

The Pines Downtown
For a piece of Dolly Parton history, hand-tossed pizza, and fun games for the whole family, you must try the Pines in Historic Downtown Sevierville. This laid-back establishment was the very first place that Dolly sang when she was only 10-years-old on the Cas Walker Show.
Today, you can play all kinds of board games, soccer pool, arcade games, duckpin bowling, and tabletop games at the Pines. It really fosters an atmosphere of having fun with your family and loved ones.
They serve sandwiches, appetizers, cheesesteaks, hand-tossed pizza, and cinnamon bread plus have a full bar. Everyone is really nice here and we ended up going twice during our trip because it was so fun!

RainForest Adventures Discovery Zoo
RainForest Adventures Discovery Zoo focuses on education about animals in the rainforest. They are a family-owned operation and have been in business since the early 2000s. The zoo is beautifully structured with a huge gift shop that you’ll see when you first walk in. Once you get your tickets, you’ll head for the exhibits.
There are all kinds of interesting animals – many of which I had never even seen or heard of – that we got to learn about and see. Lemurs, lizards, macaws, toucans, monkeys, porcupines, and snakes all greet visitors and placards urge guests to read about each one and learn something cool about them. For example, I had no idea that venom from snakes has been used in cancer treatments. They also have a few axolotls, a really unique salamander that lives in only one lake in the entire world. They are crazy cool because they can regrow limbs and some internal organs.
The Zoo also has a petting area for sheep and goats. You can feed them for a small cost. My kids loved getting to feed the cute and feisty goats. Plus, there were baby goats so that made me happy.
One of the coolest things they offer is a Sloth Encounter. They let guests who choose this adventure get up close and personal with one of their sloths. You’ll get to feed them and pet them and learn all kinds of cool stuff about them. We loved meeting their sloth, Lucia, and feeding her! Tickets are $40/person and you have to reserve in advance as this is a popular option.

Skyland Ranch occupies 100 acres on top of a mountain in Sevierville. They are a fairly new attraction and have some pretty neat things going on. For example, they’ve got the longest mountain coaster in the Southeast at more than a mile in length. We tried it out and had so much fun running those rails. New in 2025 is the WagonWheeler, a huge swing with amazing views of the mountains. They have also added an awesome Safari Ride where guests are able to feed longhorn cattle, deer, goats, and Highland cows.
They have a relaxing chair lift up to the top of the mountain (or a shuttle if you’re scared of the lift), miniature horses, goats, and a lot of great entertainment.
When we were there, we got to see a very talented cowboy show off his gun-twirling, whip-snapping, and rope-swinging skills. We also got a taste of an awesome band who played some fantastic country music songs and we danced along to line dances in the evening. Your admission to Skyland Ranch is good for a whopping three days!
XPERIA is an AI-generated attraction that takes you under the ocean to experience the magic of a squid fight, dolphin rescue, and sea lion training. It’s a great option for a rainy day! The whole exhibit takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

Dig ‘N Zone Theme Park
Dig ‘N Zone Theme Park is an entirely hands-on theme park where guests don’t ride the rides – they operate the rides. Dig ‘N Zone allows guests of all ages to actually operate construction equipment. It’s a lot of fun if you have kids who are totally obsessed with construction or want to try a theme park that is unlike any other you’ve ever been to.
I got assaulted by deer here when I fed them and I’m not even mad about it. It was actually really fun! The Smoky Mountain Deer Farm has several exotic animals plus ones we are totally obsessed with (*ahem, baby goats*) and you can feed pretty much all of them. They have zebras, elk, camels, alpacas, goats, and deer. They also offer horseback riding through shaded trails. We were there for a little over an hour and had a blast. The facility is really clean and the animals all looked well cared for and looked after. They are open daily 10 am – 5:30 pm.

With trampolines, a Ninja Warrior course, and a huge laser tag room, the 38,000-square-foot Sevier Air is the perfect place to spend time indoors on a hot, cold, or rainy day. Weather always changes fast in the mountains and this place is perfect for the entire family to burn out energy.

Soaky Mountain Waterpark
The 50-acre park has some serious waterslides and play areas. We visited and had a blast.
We stayed at The Ridge Outdoor Resort, a beautiful resort in the heart of Sevierville that has RV slips, glamping tents, and tiny homes. Our lodging was a two-bedroom, one-bathroom glamping tent with a living space, kitchen, and huge porch. It was fantastic! I couldn’t believe how much space there was inside this tent and how comfortable it was. All their tents have both AC and heat.
The resort also has two zero-entry pools, a lazy river, a catch & release pond, a deli and laundry facility on-site, two fenced in dog parks, a playground, a game room, and one of the pools has a hot tub. The place is also ideally located in Sevierville.
It’s not right in the middle of all the action so it’s very peaceful and tranquil but you won’t need to drive further than 10-15 minutes to get anywhere you want to go.

After asking our readers for recommendations on the best things to do on Hilton Head Island, The Sandbox came up as a favorite activity so we just had to check them out. To say we had fun here would be a vast understatement. The building is unassuming and hidden away from the main roads but once inside, there is no shortage of things to do, most of which are beach-themed and are designed to encourage imagination and creativity.
Hands-On Exhibits at The Sandbox
The Sandbox consists of over 15 hands-on exhibits, including a kinetic sand table, STEM island, The Sandcastle, Island Grocery, Beaches Vet Clinic, Bubbles & Lights, Island Tire Garage, and so many more!
The museum opened in 2005 as a place for learning and where kids can play freely in the Lowcountry and has become a favorite family activity ever since. The facility is designed for children ages 12 and under but I saw plenty of older kids who were having just as much fun as the younger ones.
There is a separate area set aside for children ages two and under that has a small climbing structure and age-appropriate toys. Bepaws and Mimi’s Dolphin Cove was created specifically for infants and toddlers to safely explore and crawl around.
Every exhibit invites kids to explore, learn, and let their imaginations run wild. My kids loved the grocery checkout line and the indoor sandcastle play structure. It was so cute and thoughtful. The kinetic sand was a hit as well. I’m convinced my youngest is going to be some kind of doctor after examining stuffed animals at the vet stations and looking at X-rays.

Dig Imagine Grow Program
This new program is for kids ages 3-5. This learning program is free. It focuses on using play to teach lifelong skills.
Summer Camp
The Sandbox also offers Summer Camp, including half-day and full-day options for ages 4 – 12 years old. Camps are Monday through Friday from June to July. These camps really cater to families who come to enjoy Hilton Head but want to give their kids something unique to do while they can have some time to relax outside of kid responsibilities. Cost for non-members range from $225-$390 weekly.
Shows With Mr. Puppet
You can catch Mr. Puppet at The Sandbox throughout the month. This interactive puppet show is fun, engaging, and a must-see while at the museum. Check the events calendar for his next show time.
Admission, Membership, & Location
Like the children’s museum in Greenville, The Sandbox offers yearly memberships, perfect for families to come to Hilton Head more often or just bigger families who may be able to save money versus individual tickets for everyone. This is also a great experience gift!
Tickets to The Sandbox are $12 for adults and kids. Ages 0-12 months are free. They do offer EBT discounts for $3 per person.
Hours: Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm and 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm Sunday from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm
Yearly family memberships are $150 and a Grandparent’s membership is $175.
No food or drinks are allowed inside The Sandbox and strollers must be left on the porch. There really isn’t room inside the museum. If the museum has a waiting crowd, there is a waitlist for entrance. We went mid-week in the later afternoon in July and it wasn’t too overwhelming. The Sandbox encourages people to call ahead during the busier summer months to see if there is a waitlist. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours there since there are a lot of things to do and explore.

Flying High at Anakeesta
If you happen to look at Anakeesta, the gorgeous mountaintop village in downtown Gatlinburg, from one of the overlooks coming into the town, you cannot miss the AnaVista Tower. It stands as the highest point in Gatlinburg and offers guests 360 views of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Blue Ridge Mountains, and downtown Gatlinburg. I was totally blown away when I got up there. The views are just incredible.
Designed by one of the founders of Anakeesta, Bob Bentz, it is meant to resemble the Lily flower opening its petals to the sun.
The tower stands 50 feet high and has helpful plaques on every side about what you’re looking at, from Clingman’s Dome to Stone Mountain to Pigeon Forge. You can see for miles. There are also chairs set up on every level if you need to take a break on the way up to the top. It’s the highest point in Gatlinburg and is part of Anakeesta’s $6.5 million expansion plans.

Surrounded by gardens
The tower is in the middle of the stunning gardens atop the mountain, artfully strewn with lilies, colorful little flowers, roses, lilac, and all kinds of other beauties that I love but have no idea what they are called. The views from the garden are amazing. You get up there and look out over the Great Smoky Mountains and just want to take it all in, to breathe freely, and to never leave. It’s peaceful and serene. The founders of Anakeesta are both landscape architects and it shows.
By the way, Anakeesta is less than 10 years old. Millions of people have made their way up to the mountain and already the mountaintop adventure park has earned an impressive number of travel awards.

TreeVenture
The AnaVista Tower isn’t the only thing gracing the top of the mountain. The TreeVenture adventure course is something you have to see! It easily fits into the landscape of the mountain with natural wood, nets, and fun obstacles for both kids and adults.
That’s right, adults can have just as much fun as the kids! I tried it out and enjoyed the swinging bridges and wobbly structures, and the huge slide. TreeVenture is creatively designed so it’s a challenge for everyone, but also lots of fun.
There are three levels of play on the course, six netted bridges, three treehouses, plus a slide. There’s no extra cost for all this fun!
In the last couple years, Anakeesta has just kept expanding. They have added an outdoor splash pad for the summer, new restaurants in the Firefly Village, and the wildly popular Astra Lumina, which is a night walk that makes it seem like you’re walking among stars. Most recently, they added an over-the-top birdhouse-themed playground that you have to see to believe! We have not done this yet but we do know that it has gotten rave reviews.
Admission
Admission is good for all-day access and unlimited Chondala or Ridge Rambler rides up and down the mountain. Also included in the admission ticket is the AnaVista Tower, TreeVenture, Treetop Skywalk, Treehouse Village Adventure, Overlook Event Area, Vista Gardens Walk, Memorial Forest Walk with interpretive signs, shopping and dining opportunities at Firefly Village, and the most stunning scenic views in all of Gatlinburg.

An adult ticket is $3.499 and children ages 4-11 are $22.99. Kids three and under are free.
The all-day access, I think, is one of the best perks of admission to Anakeesta. We stayed at the beautiful Greystone Lodge, right across the street from Anakeesta, maybe a five-minute walk, and the ability to head down the mountain and take a break there and then come back in the evening is a great way to spend the day. The Greystone has a fun pool, perfect for kids, and a nice way to relax for parents.
Anakeesta also offers seasonal passes, which are good for an entire year from the date of purchase. This is a great option for families if they know they are coming to Gatlinburg at least twice a year and want to make Anakeesta a part of their visit.
Season passes are $69.99 for adults and $57.99 for kids, plus you get extra perks like unlimited access to the Chondola express lane, an extra guest pass, and discounts on food and beverages and entertainment.

If you have ever seen photos of the iconic Ferris wheel in Pigeon Forge, this is where it is, on the Island at Pigeon Forge. While the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel is absolutely a must-do and oftentimes the photo you will see everywhere when reading about Pigeon Forge, the Island where it’s located is filled with tons of things to stay busy and have fun for the whole family.
My kids and I have visited the Island a couple times and never run out of things to do and see! While many of the attractions require admission tickets, there are plenty of things to do there that are free. Additionally, Pigeon Forge has a wonderful guide with coupons that is available online and via hard copy at the Welcome Center. It can also be mailed to you.

Great Smoky Mountain Wheel
The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel at the Island was our favorite thing to do. We went on once during the day and too another spin at night. We could see so far and the views of the mountains were stunning. We visited in the winter and we could see snow on the tops of the mountains and we loved it. We felt very safe (I have a slight fear of heights!) and really enjoyed the views.
At night was also amazing as we could see all the lights around Pigeon Forge – so cool. You go 200 feet up so you get a great bird’s eye view. Tickets are $16.99/adult, $11.99/kids 3 – 11. You can buy a day/night pass for $22.99.

Island Ropes Course
The Island Ropes Course consists of three levels of obstacles plus gives participants the option of doing a free fall controlled jump on the highest level to complete the course. You can spend as much time as you want on the course, which includes two zip lines. The course is all outdoors so definitely dress for the weather.
There is also a little ropes course, the Sky Tykes Course, for smaller kids under 48″ tall. The bigger ropes course is open to anyone 42″ or taller. Those under 48″ need an adult on the ropes course with them. Tickets are $16.99/person for the Island Ropes Course and $5.99/kid for the Sky Tykes Course.

SkyFly: Soar America
This is a relatively new attraction to the Island, only having opened in 2021, but SkyFly has already received the “Best New Attraction” award by USA Today in 2021. I had no idea what to expect with this ride but it was so, so cool. You are suspended in a seat in front of a 50-foot dome screen and taken on a six-minute ride across 20 iconic locations in the United States from Niagara Falls to the Grand Canyon to Alaska. I absolutely loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat. Tickets are $22.99/adult and $17.99/ages 11 and under. Kids must be 40″ tall to ride.

Arcade City
We aren’t a huge arcade family and we had the grandparents with us when we visited Arcade City on the Island, but we had such a fun time! The place is super clean, and there are tons of games for all ages. The games included everything from basketball and crane games to virtual reality, multiple-person games.
It’s the kind of spot that works great for all ages — perfect if you’ve got a range of ages with you or just need an easy indoor activity. Game cards are: $25 gets you $30, $50 gets you $65, and $100 gets you $145. Sometimes you can even find better deals around town or online.
Arcade City
Other Attractions on the Island
Other attractions on the Island include an arcade, an Escape Room, a mirror maze, bumper cars, a carousel, a 7D theater, racing track, a little kids-size roller coaster, and lots of other games. You can pay for these individually or get an unlimited rides two-day pass for $40-50/person, which covers a great many rides on the Island.
You can also visit the parrot shop and see live parrots or even some baby parrots. They are adorable. There’s also a Build-A-Bear Workshop and lots of shops to explore that carry unique gifts.
And if you’re lucky enough to be in Pigeon Forge for New Year’s, you can see fireworks at the Island for New Year’s Eve!
Eating at The Island
The Island was designed to look like a small village with cozy streets lined with cute little shops where you can buy toys or clothes, take one of those Old Time Photos in sepia with your family, and The Fudgery (get the chocolate fudge). It’s fun just to stroll around and check all these places out. Take a break and relax in one of the many inviting chairs surrounding the small lake where the dancing fountains spray the water in coordination with the outdoor music.
When you’re hungry, the on-site restaurants include a Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen, Mellow Mushroom, Yee-Haw Brewing Company, and Timberwood Grill. You can grab an authentic, and quite delicious, margarita at the Changes in Latitude bar at the Margaritaville hotel, as well as enjoy a quick bite (get the pretzels with cheese dip…mmmm).
Shopping on The Island: 80+ Fun Shops to Explore
We had so much fun exploring the shops at The Island in Pigeon Forge! With over 80 stores, there’s a little something for everyone, from unique souvenirs and home decor to silly toys and sweet treats. We wandered in “just to look” and end up laughing at quirky finds and even bought some vintage candy that Grandma remembered from her childhood.
One of our favorite stops was Pepper Palace, where they offer free hot sauce samples (yes, really!). Our teenager tried every single sauce they offered — even the really spicy ones — until we hit the level where they required a waiver. That was our cue to tap out!

Lodging at The Island
The Island at Pigeon Forge is central to pretty much all of the attractions in town. It’s 10 minutes from the Smoky Mountain Opry and Titanic Museum and 15 minutes from Dollywood. You can walk across the street to a couple different pancake houses and other attractions if you like.
Choosing to stay on the Island is a great decision for all of these reasons! The Margaritaville Island Hotel on the Island is incredible and guests can enjoy the rooftop pool and hot tub all year long. There’s also the Margaritaville Island Inn on the Island, which is under the same brand but is a little less expensive and includes a continental breakfast.
Parking at The Island
Parking at the Island is free – take a right past the Margaritaville Island Hotel and over the bridge, where there is a huge lot. Park for free there and take a trolley into the main part of the Island if you don’t want to walk.
Pro-Tips
Don’t forget to grab the coupon books around town or check online since many of them have coupons to attractions and restaurants on the Island. The Island’s website offers many coupons as well that you can use.
You can plan to spend a few hours or a couple of days here, especially if you stay at one of the properties on the Island.
If you visit The Island during Winterfest in Pigeon Forge, the Wonders of Lights Walking Trail starts at the Island and is free to walk through.
If you want to be close to all that the Sevierville, TN area has to offer but not be in the middle of crowds, The Ridge Outdoor Resort is the place to be. When on vacation, I love to try new things and experience unique adventures. But I also enjoy some downtime and relaxation and The Ridge Outdoor Resort in Sevierville, TN is absolutely perfect for both of those goals – and it’s just three hours from Greenville, SC.
My family and I stayed in one of their glamping tents and had such a great time exploring Sevierville but also hanging out at the pools and resting up for our next adventures. Here’s why I think you’ll love a stay at The Ridge Outdoor Resort.
About The Ridge Outdoor Resort
Having only opened in 2019, The Ridge Outdoor Resort has already established itself as one of the area’s best luxury RV and camping, and glamping resorts. They have multiple options for lodging, many amenities, and they are surrounded by 50 acres of Smoky Mountain beauty.
The Ridge Outdoor Resort currently has more than 150 RV sites, eight glamping canvas tents, and five luxury tiny homes. They have two zero entry pools, a hot tub, two bathhouses, two dog parks, a catch-and-release pond, laundry, on-site deli, playground, kids room with games, and fitness center.
The Pools
We really enjoyed our time at the two pools located at the resort. Both are zero-entry pools, which are perfect for smaller kids who can’t swim well or at all.
The pool closest to the main building at the resort has a hot tub and the pool is about five feet deep. They also have umbrellas and chairs you can relax in right in the shallow water in the pool. I loved that! There’s a bathhouse right next to the pool if you need.
The other pool, located on the opposite end of the resort, has a small lazy river and covered tables and chairs plus bathrooms. My kids went around that lazy river a seemingly infinite number of times, with and without tubes.
There are tubes provided plus plenty of lounge chairs at both pools, which is really nice for catching up on all that reading I had been meaning to do. There are large umbrellas if you’d like to sit in the shade and plenty of sunny spots if that’s your thing.

Our Glamping Tent
I’ve stayed in glamping tents before but none as large and accommodating as our two-bedroom, one bathroom tent at the Ridge Resort. It was amazing!
There is a huge porch with a gas fire pit, oversized chairs, and a picnic table. Once you step inside, there’s a good size living space with a table, sofa, and television plus a kitchen. Head down the hallway and there’s a full bathroom and two bedrooms. I was impressed with how much they fit into this tent.
Tents all have air conditioning and heat so you can stay any time of the year and be comfortable. We stayed during July and it was really, really hot but the tent was cool, especially at night. Because it is a tent not with solid walls, the air conditioning and fans are louder than they are in a house but honestly, it didn’t bother me at all. I sleep with a white noise machine so this was actually perfect. I wish I could have spent a longer amount of time here because it was so comfortable and relaxing. For our family of four, it was the perfect size and never felt cramped.
I especially loved the porch because it somehow got a nice breeze even in 90+ degree heat during the day. I had morning coffee out there and didn’t want to leave. As of this writing, glamping tents are offered at $210/night. Some are pet-friendly.
Tiny Homes & RV Slips
There are five tiny homes at the Ridge Resort that can sleep anywhere from 1-6 guests and come with all the modern amenities of glamping: a kitchen, bathroom, and bedrooms. Each tiny house also has AC and heat so they can be enjoyed year-round.
I don’t have an RV so I’m truly not well-versed in RV language but the Ridge Resort offers both Premiere and Signature sites. All sites include all the amenities at the resort plus the Signature sites also have an outdoor wood-burning fireplace, outdoor television, grill, and individual hot tub. I may need to start researching RVs.
Fishing, Golf Carts, Kids Room & Other Amenities
The amenities at the Ridge Resort are awesome and family-friendly. While our favorites were the two pools and hot tub, the resort also offers golf cart rentals, a golf simulator, free wifi, two dog parks, and seasonal activities.
They also have a deli on site that you can order food from right from your phone. There are plenty of restrooms and bathhouses at either end of the resort plus a camp store if you need any last-minute items.
If you are like me and absolutely love Jeeps, you can rent one from the resort to bop around in during your time in Sevierville. They are $125/day + tax.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Ridge Outdoor Resort in Sevierville, TN with my family. They just made it so easy to relax, which I find is often a tough thing to do in my daily life. Besides the pools and the beautiful glamping tent, my favorite thing was the location.
We had to drive no more than 10 minutes to get anywhere we needed to go. Everything was so close, but we weren’t in the midst of all the action, just close to it, which made our trip there so much more peaceful and relaxing.
