Paddleboard the Saluda River for a Fun Adventure Five Miles from Greenville, SC

Posted on |

Resident adventurist Kristina took her kids paddleboarding on the Saluda River with SUP State and tells us all about the new company and what they offer. Thanks to SUP State for inviting us on a trip down the river!

Mom and two daughter on a paddleboard on the river shore.

If you’re looking to get outside and go paddleboarding on a river but stay close to Greenville, we’ve got just the place. Located at the Saluda Outdoor Center, literally five miles from downtown Greenville, SUP State offers paddleboard tours right there on the Saluda River. They also have tours on the French Broad in Asheville.

I had heard of the Saluda Outdoor Center before but had never been and although I’ve paddleboarded before, I’ve never done so on a river. But I love adventures and new experiences – as do my kids – so when SUP State asked us if we wanted to go on a tour, it was a resounding ‘yes’! Plus, being outside and on water is a great way to social distance.

About SUP State

SUP State is the only paddleboarding outfitter in Greenville that does guided tours on the Saluda River. SUP stands for “stand up paddleboarding”, which means you are standing, or kneeling or sitting if you want, on a floating board a bit wider and sturdier than a surfboard and paddle along. It’s a lot of fun and something that’s easy to learn.

Paddleboard standing on its side in grass

SUP State is run by Derrick and his wife, Candace, both paddle enthusiasts. Derrick is the expert guide who has years of outdoor experience and water safety certifications, which made me feel like I was in good hands for this new adventure.

So while the company is pretty new to Greenville, having only opened up in late 2019, Derrick and Candace bring a lot of experience to the trips.

Paddleboarding the Saluda

Our trip was below the Saluda Dam on pretty flat and calm water. You need to wear helmets, life jackets, and closed toed shoes for the trip and Derrick gives you a thorough safety lesson before you get on the board.

While I had paddleboarded before, I was totally winging it and had no idea the different kinds of strokes to use or how to make sure your core is doing the work rather than your arms. All helpful information to help make the experience even more enjoyable.

The water was moving but not swiftly and there were some tubers also enjoying the hot day. We did approach some smaller rapids, which Derrick guided us through.

Man and child standing on paddleboard in water

The bigger rapid near the end of the trip was a little more challenging than the others. Derrick gave us all specific instructions on what to do if we fell off the board – not to try to stand up in the water but float on our backs and just let the board float away. Good thing for the instruction because I did lose my balance and tumbled into the water but remembered the lesson and just got some water up my nose!

Again, Derrick is such an expert at what he does that he had prepared us for what to do and then helped us get back on our boards and on the river. Smaller kids may find this a little scary – or fun. It’s all part of the adventure and with paddleboarding, you are probably going to go for a swim.

The water level of the river will change how the run will go as well. If the water is too low, paddleboard tours will need to be put on hold. As far the safety of the river, you can check the SC DHEC website to see if the state has issued a swimming advisory in the Saluda (as of this writing, they have not).

You can choose almost any length of time you want for the paddleboard tour, from an hour up to 3.5-4 hours.

Ages for Paddleboarding

I had my six and nine year olds with me on this trip. I paddled with my youngest daughter and Derrick had my older one on his board. They took turns standing up to paddle but kids have to be at least 12 years old to ride solo on their own board.

While everyone is required to wear a life jacket, SUP State recommends that kids be able to pass a YMCA swim test which means they can swim the length of a pool and tread water. Kids who go on the paddleboard tours with SUP State should be at least six years old. Each run may require a different minimum age though.

SUP State lets you bring water and snacks, which is awesome because it is hot and really, kids can be motivated to do almost anything for snacks.

Seasonal Fun & Costs

SUP State plans to do runs through October as long as the water level is safe for paddleboarding and the weather holds. It’s certainly hot enough here in Greenville for a longer season for water sports.

Costs per person start at $75 depending on the trip, for ages 12+ on their own board.

Paddleboard tours run Memorial Day through Labor Day and possibly later if the weather and river level look good.

Saluda Outdoor Center

SUP State’s home base is right at the Saluda Outdoor Center, an outdoor recreation center down the road from Greenville. Currently, SUP State does the paddleboard tours and a tubing company takes tubers also out on the river. SOC has awesome tiny houses and river pods to rent – we stayed in one of their tiny houses and it was fantastic!

Primrose School of Simpsonville at Five Forks is Creating a Classroom That Values People and Culture

Posted on |

Thank you to Primrose School of Simpsonville at Five Forks for sponsoring this article.

Meggie Bradberry was one of the original Primrose school’s first graduates 30 years ago in Marietta, GA. After all, her parents, Marcy and Paul Erwin, started Primrose Schools and believed enough in its incredible benefits that they wanted Meggie to attend and learn there. Now, Meggie and her husband, Buck, have two young children of their own. Not only did Meggie and Buck send their children to Primrose School of Simpsonville at Five Forks, they are the franchise owners of this unique and successful school.

Harmony & Heart®

Our music and literature program uses original songs and books to help children become dynamic thinkers, good listeners and kind people.

“We are so pleased with the addition of a new preschool classroom to our beautiful school as we are now able to serve the growing demand of our community!” said Meggie. “Both of my children have graduated from our school, and we can proudly say we are truly the best of the best — from the teachers to the leadership team and our amazing parents! We just love being a part of this incredible community!”

About Meggie & Buck

Meggie graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Georgia, but since she is so passionate about nutrition and wellness (this comes in handy as the owner of a Primrose school in Simpsonville — more on this later), she became a Certified Holistic Health Coach (CHHC) and Certified Transformational Nutrition Coach (CTC).

Primrose School 2023

Buck played baseball and got his degree in business administration as well from Columbus State University in Columbus, GA. Meggie and Buck are active in their communities, as they are members of both the Greenville and Simpsonville Chambers of Commerce and support the American Heart Association.

Primrose School Model

The Primrose experience consists of four main elements: their people and culture that strive toward creating a “caring and nurturing environment that builds trusted relationships”; their Balanced Learning® curriculum which “supports children’s social-emotional, cognitive, creative and physical development”; their Standards of Excellence which provides parents and students with specific accreditation; and their Partnership with Parents, which seeks to develop a strong connection between the parents and the school for the benefit of the children.

Primrose School 2023 - Canva

The Balanced Learning® curriculum was developed by and taught exclusively at Primrose Schools. It is a research-based curriculum that blends teacher-guided and child-initiated activities with a special emphasis on character development. Balanced Learning is designed for children ages 6 weeks old to 6 years old.

“When my parents started Primrose more than 30 years ago, they had no idea how much of a success it would become,” said Meggie. “All this time, the core values of Primrose have never changed. I’m thrilled to see it come full circle for my own family, and we’re so excited to offer Simpsonville parents the high-quality early education and care that all children deserve.”

Nutrition is Key

With a stellar background in nutrition, Meggie and Buck are the perfect people to teach Primrose students about healthy – and yummy – eating. In fact, prior to becoming franchise owners, they founded a health consulting company that focused on healthy eating alternatives for both individuals and businesses. They love health and nutrition and certainly plan on making that a focal point in the balanced meals and snacks offered at their school.

Primrose School 2023 - Canva

Primrose School of Simpsonville at Five Forks offers breakfast, a morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and a late afternoon snack. All of their meals and snacks, which are coordinated by certified dietitians, are balanced with lean protein, nutrient-dense foods, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables.

What Families Say

It’s hard to believe that Primrose School of Simpsonville at Five Forks has been open for almost eight years now! Read what the Primrose families have to say:

Primrose Mom Maria said:

“We chose Primrose for private kindergarten for our 5-year-old. We picked Primrose over the other schools in the area because of the smaller classes, the educated teachers, the curriculum and everything they have to offer (gardening, life skills, Grandparent program, etc.) The teacher was wonderful. My daughter warmed up to her right away even though she is very shy. I am so glad we chose Primrose for our daughter! I think it is worth every penny. (BTW- We pass three schools to get to Primrose every day.)”

Primrose Mom Marissa said:

“Our daughter started attending the Primrose School of Simpsonville at Five Forks when she was 12 weeks old and is currently in the Young Toddler room. We’ve been a Primrose family for close to a year now and our daughter has flourished and grown by leaps and bounds. The teachers have been incredible and what she is learning is invaluable.”

Primrose Mom Brooke said:

“As a first-time mom going back to work, there is nothing more powerful and priceless than dropping your child off knowing that they are in the hands of people who genuinely love and care for her as their own. From our first months in the older infant room to the early preschool program, we are constantly enjoying watching her grow, and that is ALL thanks to the commitment and hard work of such amazing teachers and leadership!”

Take a Trip to See Patriot’s Point Naval & Maritime Museum in Charleston this Summer

Posted on |

Right in the middle of Charleston Harbor rests a massive aircraft carrier called the USS Yorktown, one in which you and your kids are welcome to tour and even sleep aboard! The USS Yorktown is flanked by other historical, climb-aboard gems like the USS Laffey Destroyer, as well as several aircraft, a Vietnam memorial exhibit, and a Medal of Honor Museum. Patriot’s Point Naval & Maritime Museum is like the game of Battleship, come to life.

See our Charleston page for even more suggestions of things to do and places to eat in Charleston, SC.

Walking up to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

What you’ll discover at this museum

My kids enjoyed tunneling through passageways, sitting at helms, and checking out the helicopters and awesome aircraft on the flight deck. These vessels served our nation in many wars including WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War before they were put on display and transformed into a must-see floating museum.

The USS Laffey Destroyer is also known as The Ship That Would Not Die – learn all about the amazing legacy while aboard the ship herself. The stories each of these ships will tell you are simply remarkable.

Out on dry land, you can find the Vietnam Experience Exhibit. A 2.5-acre immersion experience with simulations to give you an idea of what life was like during wartime. You can also tour the Medal of Honor Museum which honors the courage and tells the stories of brave American heroes.

Southside Park in Greenville, SC Offers More Than Just a Water Park

Have you visited the playground and park at Southside Park in Greenville, SC? Popular for it’s waterpark, there are lots more ways to enjoy Southside Park. Here are all the details about the playground and surrounding area at Southside Park in Greenville, SC.

To read more park reviews see our Kidding Around Greenville Parks page.

Many of you may have headed to Southside Park in Simpsonville to visit Discovery Island Water Park, but there is so much more to do there. Let me share with you some of our favorite things about the park!

Discovery Island Waterpark

What else you’ll find at Southside Park

A playground for everyone

The playground area at Southside Park is huge! There a several different play zones set up for children of various ages.

There is an area just as you enter the playground for small children.  My son used to love sit by the activity spinner and spin it around. It also has swings and a climbing structure just the size for small children.

Just below the small children’s area is the riding and rocking area. The four-person bouncer is so much fun to explore with your kids. The bouncy animals are fun to ride too.

The large child play area is filled with three large structures that feature slides, climbing spaces, and bridges. They are perfect for pretend play and burning off energy! There is so much to do that children will want to explore them for a while.

Sport Areas

Southside Park has a number of sports areas to play on. Some were designed for specific games while others are more open ended.

There are a number of tennis courts that are in good shape.  When they aren’t being used for tennis, I bet your kids will like tossing balls over the net.

Beside the tennis courts are basketball courts. While the baskets are all high, I think children will have fun trying to make baskets there.

Not far from the basketball courts are two soccer fields with goals. They are tucked away from the other play areas right next to an eating pavilion. What a great place to play soccer or tag in a small space after having a picnic lunch.

Southside Park has several big open grassy areas. They are large enough for a number of people to play Frisbee, fly kites or play football.

YMCA offers similar great family programming at their other Greenville locations, and we also love that membership at many of the branches comes with a free parent’s night out each month. Find all of the YMCA locations via their website, and consider an Upstate membership for access to all of the branches.

The YMCA memberships now include access to all locations with the location you attend most often designated your home location.

11 Tips on Budgeting for Your Baby

Posted on |

Babies are crazy expensive but there are absolutely ways to ease the burden of those expenses, which we are going to tell you about right here!

Estimates vary but experts on budgeting say the costs associated in the first year of your baby’s life could add up to thousands of dollars after you factor in co-payments, childcare, formula, clothing, cribs, diapers, etc.. Yup. But take a breath and don’t worry, there are lots of ways to cut this number down.

First, you may want to check out a calculator online to estimate expenses. This baby calculator is fun because you can choose which things you are going to pay for and what they will cost (new baby clothes the first year: $600 – ha, not with our budget list here!) and then uncheck thsoe things that you know you’re not going to be paying for and see how low you can go. This Bump calculator is a good one also that can help you to calculate what you think you may spend.

Special thanks to our readers who gave us lots of great ideas when we asked them their best baby budgeting tips!

Look at Your Insurance

If you haven’t looked at what you are going to pay for your ob/gyn visits, routine tests, and labor and delivery through your insurance, look at it now. It’s almost always under the “maternity” section. If you’re not pregnant yet, see how much you are expected to pay and start saving little by little so you’re not stuck with some huge, unexpected bill. If you are pregnant, check to make sure your doctor and hospital are covered. If you are giving birth at home or at a birthing center, call your insurance company to see if any of those costs may be covered under your plan or what can go towards your deductible.

Gradually Stock Up on Essentials

Once you find out you’re pregnant, start purchasing diapers and wipes every time you go to the grocery store/Costco/Sam’s so that you’re aren’t overwhelemed when the baby comes. You’ll be so tired and having all those diapers and wipes on hand will be a lifesaver – you won’t need to run out of the house at 1am to get diapers!

Shop Thrift Stores, Consignment Shops, and Facebook Marketplace

When I had my first baby, I was determined not to buy anything brand new. Babies grow out of clothes extraordinarly fast and you can almost find near-new clothes at thrift and consignment stores, big consignment sales, and your local Facebook mom groups like KidSift or Buy Nothing groups here in Greenville.

Also, don’t be afraid to take hand-me-downs from friends who want to give them to you. I absolutely love giving my friends and family clothes and shoes that my kids have outgrown and gladly accepted boxes of them when I was pregnant.

This goes for both clothes and baby gear. One of our readers aptly noted: “No sense spending $200 on a baby swing when you can buy the same one for a fraction.

Use Cloth Diapers

I cloth-diapered both my kids and it was so much easier than I thought it would be, plus the patterns and diapers are adorable. These diapers aren’t from the 1800s. They are super modern, easy to clean, and can save a ton of money in the long run. One detailed analysis of cloth vs. disposables over 30 months came out with spending about $770 on cloth diapers (including the cost of washing the diapers) to over $2,300 for disposables.  There are a lot of different comparisons on the cost but in the end, the cloth is almost always cheaper – and they have resale value.

The cloth diapering world can be overwhelming but don’t be intimated. Do your research, buy used, and save money!

One of our readers said this about cloth diapering: “Invest in cloth diapers. Especially if you plan to have multiples. I only had one, but I only paid $100 to diaper her for 3 years.

Start Living on One Income

One of our readers said that her and husband started living on one income before she even became pregnant so that she could stay at home when the baby came. That’s dedication and extremely smart.

Save for Higher Education Immediately

Once your child has a Social Security Number, you can open a 529 account. South Carolina’s 529 program is called Future Scholar and it’s basically a long-term investment account where you can automatically withdraw money each month that is set aside for higher education. This is something my husband and I did immediately for our kids once they had their SSN and it’s on auto draft so we don’t have to think about it.

Even if your kids are out of the baby stage, it’s never too late to start saving for higher education since it’s so incredibly costly.

Ask for Gift Cards on Your Baby Registry

As babies grow, they need different things and if you ask for gift cards on your baby registry, it’s a great way to knock off some of those later expenses for your kid down the road.

Don’t Feel Like You Need the Fanciest Baby Gear

An UPPAbaby stroller and Mesa Infant Car Seat is currently $1,300 on Amazon and a Hot Mom Baby Stroller will run you $600. Look, your baby isn’t going to be in these strollers very long and oh my gosh, that’s a lot of money for baby gear. A Graco stroller is great – even better if you get it at the thrift store (it’s typically a good idea to buy car seats new or gently used though, just check the expiration date and make sure it wasn’t in a previous accident) – and you don’t need to spend a rent or mortgage payment on it. Don’t feel bad if you’re not that mom rockin the trendiest baby gear or expensive baby clothes.

Babies Don’t Need All the Things

Diapers, wipes, a crib or bassinet, clothes, and food are pretty much the essentials of what a baby needs. I loved my jogging strollers when my kids were little because I could get a workout in but I never used an actual stroller and preferred to use a baby carrier instead.

Baby toys, books, annoying musical play mats, baby swings, and so many other things just take up space and are useless within a few months. If you feel like you need any of these things, go the used route and see if you can find them for free or cheap.

Ask Your Friends if They are Getting Rid of Stuff

We all have too much stuff, right? If someone asked me if I had some baby clothes, strollers, crib mattresses, or literally any baby thing lying around that I wanted to get rid of, I would have jumped at the chance then. A neighbor posted in our neighborhood Facebook group that she needed a crib and I happened to have ours just sitting in a closet and was absolutely thrilled to give it to her. I got more space in my house and she got a crib – win/win!

Free Breastpumps Through Insurance

According to our government, your insurance must cover the cost of a new breastpump. Speak with your doctor and insurance provider on how to go about making this happen if you’re breastfeeding. Both my electric and manual pumps totally saved me while breastfeeding, especially when my maternity leave was up and my baby had to take milk from a bottle. Big win here for moms since breast pumps can cost you several hundred dollars.
