Family Travel: Newnan-Coweta, GA is Like Stepping Back in Time

Posted on |

Inside: If you’re looking for a lovely family trip not far from the Upstate, SC, consider Newnan-Coweta, GA, a little over three hours away. The small town charm and filming location of big television hits will captivate you!

Thanks to Explore Newnan-Coweta for inviting us on a media trip to experience their little slice of heaven.

Way down yonder on the Chattahoochee lies the charming small town of Newnan in Coweta County, just outside of Atlanta, Georgia. It’s the same town where country music legend Alan Jackson grew up and no doubt was inspired by his time on the iconic river to write his chart-topping hits.

Today, the town of Newnan is one of the must-see spots if you make the drive down I-85 to Coweta County. The other iconic town is Senoia, where “The Walking Dead” was filmed. We spent a weekend in this beautiful area and think you and your family will love it if you’re looking for a little getaway not far from the Upstate.

About Newnan & Senoia

Newnan-Coweta is part of the greater metropolitan area of Atlanta and because of its proximity to the city, has been growing rapidly. But Newnan and Senoia both retain their small town charm.

The town square is the center of historic Newnan and quite literally all the small businesses surround the square. You can find anything from unique clothing to handmade tea towels to jewelry, pottery, chocolate, coffee, and books. This is what made me fall in love with Newnan.

Newnan was a hospital town during the Civil War since it was right off the railroad. The town was supported by the textile and manufacturing industries and you can still see some of the stately homes from that era as you drive into town. Many of the buildings date back to the mid-1800s.

One of the really neat buildings is the Alamo Theater on one of the corners of the town square. Originally built in 1880, it housed a harness shop, general store, and butcher shop throughout the decades. In 1928, it was converted to a movie theater with one screen and 551 seats. I felt like I was in one of the “Back to the Future” movies looking at the Alamo Theater.

Senoia is also super fascinating but for a whole other reason: I learned that Senoia is classified as Anytown, USA, which means it was built to basically conform to whatever a production team would need for a film or series. The streets of downtown have been laid with dirt and the buildings transformed to look like a Wild West town for one movie and the entire “Walking Dead” series was filmed in Senoia along with dozens of movies.

Summer Wined Up

The weekend I spent in Newnan happened to be the same weekend of the Summer Wined Up festival. This event is meant to highlight not only various local wines but also showcase Newnan’s small businesses.

After you show your ID and get your wristband, you get a map of the small businesses and the wines they are serving, which are all about one ounce pours. You don’t have to try every single wine available – there are about 35 small businesses participating and that’s a lot of wine. I don’t know how many tickets they sold (they did sell out) but it was the perfect number because nowhere was crowded.

I really could not have envisioned a better introduction to the town of Newnan. Not only was the wine I tried delicious but having the opportunity to walk into each of the small businesses was just fantastic.

Many of them had small hors d’oeuvres like fruit, cheese, and cookies, which my daughters (ages 12 and 8) loved but we also got to check out local bookstores, shops overflowing with handcrafted jewelry and bags, apparel stores, pottery shops, medical businesses, and restaurants.

I was completely floored at the diversity of shops around the town square. It was amazing and my girls and I had such a blast shopping and picking up some really neat items.

We will be sure to update this story before next year’s Wined Up so you can make plans to go to Newnan for the weekend! Newnan will host a similar event, Oktoberfest on Friday, October 3rd from 5-10 pm, if you’d like to start making travel plans.

Senoia Farmers Market

This farmers market is adorable. We loved strolling through the stalls and finding everything from freshly cut flowers to produce and vegetables to iced coffee to French pastries and bread. There are so many unique vendors and it was a lot of fun to wander through the farmers market before we headed over to main street in Senoia to check out where “The Walking Dead” was filmed.

Full confession: I have never seen one episode of “The Walking Dead” but can certainly appreciate cinematic aspects of any film or series and love getting to see where movies are made.

I picked up a lavender iced coffee from one of the local coffee vendors and cinnamon raisin bread and a danish from the French baker. She was quite convincing and I’m impressed with myself that I didn’t walk out of there with a lot – like, a lot – more baked goods.

The Senoia Farmers Market is open every Saturday, April – December from 8:30 am – 1 pm.

40 Travis Street, Senoia, GA

Downtown Senoia

When you walk around downtown Senoia, you’ll come across plaques on the ground that tell you about the different movies and shows that were filmed in the town. “Fried Green Tomatoes” and “Pet Cemetery II”, among many other movies, were filmed there.

We walked into one unique shop that had clothes from “The Walking Dead” that they acquired when the show ended. The owners had some great stories about how the production team would film in the town and when they even used their shop for some of the scenes. The Georgia Tour Company offers walking tours of the different areas around Senoia that have been used for movies.

There are coffee shops, breakfast and lunch bistros, a lovely bookstore, and stores that sell handmade goods up and down main street in Senoia. It’s a great place to spend some time exploring.

Full Circle Toys

Full Circle Toys & Games place is right off the main square and we just happened to stumble upon it when we got into town. My youngest child saw the words “toy shop” and she wanted to check it out so we did.

This store is so neat because they have toys from the 80s and 90s like collectible baseball figurines, Star Wars characters, Cabbage Patch dolls, Strawberry Shortcake dolls and houses, Fisher Price toys, Elmo and Cookie Monster dolls, collectible Barbies, and old school McDonald toys. I had such a blast wandering around this shop!

How to enjoy the outdoors in Newnan-Coweta

There are some great spots to enjoy the outdoors in Newnan-Coweta.

C.J. Smith Park

This park has a great playground with lots of swings and rope-climbing structures. There are two big slides down a hill that were under construction when we were there but they looked super fun.

This park also has a huge skate park. We got to watch several skateboarders show off their moves, which was a blast. I have a lot of admiration for these daredevils. A splash pad is near the parking lot but wasn’t on when we were there.

Chattahoochee Bend State Park

Part of the Georgia State Park system, Chattahoochee Bend State Park has lots of camping, a couple of playgrounds, about six miles of trails, and a boat ramp into the river. There really aren’t any swimming spots but you can certainly fish in the river off the banks.

If you have your own kayak, you can launch right from the park into the river. The Park also has programs available that sometimes involve kayaking on the river. Check out the park events page to see what’s going on when you are planning a visit. We did a short, shaded (thankfully) hike along the river and it was really pretty.

Where to eat in Newnan-Coweta

There are several restaurants right in downtown Newnan and Senoia. Here’s where we ate:

Meat N Greet

Meat N Greet was our first stop for dinner when we got to Newnan and the staff was awesome. Our waitress explained the menu and gave us her recommendations. They are known for burgers so that’s what we got. All our dishes were really good and the fries were amazing. Meat N Greet is right off the main square in Newnan so it’s a great starting point if you want to wander around downtown.

11 Jefferson Street, Newnan, GA

Curious Kitchen at the Senoia Farmers Market

After our morning at the Senoia Farmers Market, we were going to head over to the Chattahoochee Bend State Park. I wanted something for lunch on the go so we got bacon and egg burritos and sandwiches from the Curious Kitchen at one of the stalls at the market. I was given a tip that these were pretty famous and that is a hundred percent the truth.

My kids devoured their sandwiches and I couldn’t even finish my burrito. The flavors were outstanding! If you go to Senoia on a day when the Farmers Market isn’t open, you can still get an amazing burrito or sandwich at the Curious Kitchen and Bar located in downtown Senoia.

The Cellar

The Cellar is a steakhouse located in downtown Newnan that serves a variety of both meat and seafood dishes. I had shrimp and grits and roasted vegetables, which were delicious. My kids ordered off the children’s menu and had grilled cheese and chicken tenders. I’ll admit I stole a bunch of their fries because excellent fries are my weak spot. The Cellar is more on the fine dining scale so reservations are recommended.

20 Jefferson Street, Newnan, GA

Bistro Hilary

This cute restaurant is located in Senoia and is a great stop for lunch. Bistro Hilary is based on French-inspired cuisine that sources their ingredients locally.

21 Barnes Street, Senoia, GA

Rock Salt Milk Bar

If you go anywhere in Newnan, Rock Salt Milk Bar should be it. They make all their own ice cream, sourcing as many ingredients as they can both locally and organically. And they make their own waffle bowls and cones.

I honestly could have eaten just those. I got honey lavender ice cream in a waffle bowl and I was in heaven. The kiddie size, which is a small(ish) scoop, and is perfect. I like ice cream but don’t like to overindulge and this size was perfect. My kids were also in heaven, so big win.

Where to stay in Newnan-Coweta

We stayed at the TownePlace Suites by Marriott just seven minutes from the Newnan Town Square. I always look for places with kitchenettes to help save on food costs when traveling and this place had a great kitchenette with a refrigerator, sink, two burner stovetop, and dishwasher. We took advantage of the refrigerator to keep our waters cold because it was super hot when we visited (not the hotel but the weather!).

The pool at Towneplace Suites

The hotel also had complimentary breakfast each morning with eggs (one of my kids declared these eggs some of the best she’s ever had so there’s that), waffles, oatmeal, cereal, bagels, and muffins. There’s also juice and coffee/hot chocolate/tea available 24/7.

On the way to Newnan-Coweta, my kids wanted to know if the hotel had a pool and were delighted to find out that indeed, their dreams would be coming true when we arrived. The pool is outdoors and there is also an indoor fitness center.

Lastly, the rooms are very spacious and clean and all the hotel staff were very helpful. There is free parking for all guests.

Overall Impression of Newnan-Coweta

I’m always up for a new adventure and visiting new places but I really had no idea what to expect at Newnan-Coweta. That first night walking around the main square in downtown Newnan was unexpectedly fantastic. I absolutely loved the small town charm, the local businesses, the kindness of everyone we met, and the calm atmosphere of Newnan. It was almost like stepping back in time, which I so enjoyed.

I love traveling with my daughters and seeing their excitement at exploring new places and they felt the same way about Newnan and Senoia. These little towns are both unique and interesting but also just give off such a calm and peaceful vibe that I couldn’t help but get caught up in the beauty of it.

And Alan Jackson. I love country music from the 90s and have been a fan of his for many years. Finding out that this is where he grew up was quite exciting.

Normally, our trips involve a lot of hiking and adventure and more high-strung activities, so exploring Newnan-Coweta in a more relaxed fashion was certainly a newer experience but one that we really enjoyed. If you’re looking for more of a low-key trip that has elements of uniqueness and invites restfulness and family or couple time, this is the place to go.

On-location | Visiting Outer Banks Filming Locations in Charleston, SC

Posted on |

Are you a fan of the show Outer Banks? Filming locations can be found close by! Maybe you are wondering “Where was Outer Banks filmed?” You will be surprised to find that the Outer Banks film location for the Netflix series is actually Charleston, SC! You don’t have to leave the state of South Carolina to visit John B.’s house, Outer Banks filming locations, and other spots from scenes on the popular Netflix show. We went on the hunt for John B. and the wreck of the Royal Merchant, and you can reap the benefits and set off on this tour of Outer Banks filming locations.

So, if you’re wondering about the Outer Banks film location, we have everything you need, right here.

Where Was Outer Banks Filmed?

At the beginning of the 2020’s pandemic, my friend and I were simultaneously binge-watching shows. So when he suggested the Outer Banks, he said it was a teen show and didn’t seem interested. A show that combined a murder mystery with a treasure hunt in a setting that was familiar to me?

I was quickly hooked on this who-done-it! I love exploring places and going off the beaten path. These locations were a mixture of familiar and way off the beaten path (for me, at least). It didn’t take long for me to get invested in the character’s search for answers. Producers chose Charleston, South Carolina, to use a fictional town in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in response to political issues based on a house bill passed in North Carolina. Though the show wasn’t filmed in the real Outer Banks, Charleston makes for an excellent filming location because of its rich history.

If you’re planning a visit, check out our Guide to Charleston, SC, before you head out! You’ll find other fun things to do and suggestions for enjoying the city!

Season 1 of Netflix’s Outer Banks: Filming Locations in Charleston SC

The “Summer Winds” hotel that John B. and Pope break into in the first episode is a real hotel where you can stay. You can book room 229 at Charleston Creekside Inn to stay in the room where filming took place. However, if you plan on escaping out the window as they did in the show, I need to warn you that the awning was never there, so you’ll need to have an alternate escape route if the bad guys come back to the room.

Must See Set Locations Around Charleston, SC

You can recreate Sarah and John B.’s trip to the show’s version of UNC-Chapel Hill by hopping on the Carolina Belle for a ride around the harbor. After strolling through Washington Square Park, be sure to stop at Ben Silver for some dapper outfits. Then head to the Gaillard Center, the UNC-Chapel Hill Law Library, for the show’s purposes. Sadly this means you won’t be able to go upstairs and look for the clues that lead to a treasure but don’t worry; we can tell you where to find Platt 9.

Widows house on location in Charleston, South Carolina looking for Outer Banks filming locations
Crain Widow’s Home

The spooky *Crain widow’s home was rumored to have needed very little done inside to it by the scenery team. It really looks like that! This might be where the similarities end, though. The home’s top floor was added in post-production, and while the home does have a crawl space, those scenes were filmed in a soundstage.
*The house is occupied, and out of respect for the residents, I have removed the address for the season 2 update.

Tanney Hill Plantation, the home of “Kook Princess” Sarah Cameron, was home over 200 years ago and is now on the register of historic places. Lowndes Grove is a wedding and event venue that is right on the water. The property’s rich history spans a revolutionary war invasion, the arrival of Charleston’s World’s Fair, and a visit from President Theodore Roosevelt.

Creekside Inn

The Creekside Inn in West Ashley was in the first episode of the Outer Banks. It was the Summer Winds Motel, the motel that was badly hit by the hurricane. You can actually stay at this hotel (we did!). It was recently given a multi-million dollar renovation and was in a great location and one of the more budget-friendly places we could find in the Charleston area. The address is 2545 Savannah Highway.

On Location in Mount Pleasant For Season 2 of Netflix’s Outer Banks

A lot of the scenes are shot by the docks, you might recognize if you’ve followed our tips for Free and Low-Cost Things To Do In Mount Pleasant. Shem Creek is a beautiful place and one we usually find ourselves at every time we visit Charleston. If you like fresh seafood and want to see the spot where dockside scenes were filmed, Geechie Seafood is the place you should head.

The restaurant that Kiara’s parents own is, in reality, The Wreck Of The Richard And Charlene. The restaurant is a seafood lover’s dream. The seafood exclusive menu includes shrimp, crab, scallops, and fish. Served with low country-style side dishes. They even have boiled peanuts!

Outer Banks on location at Mount Pleasant City Hall

The Kildare County Sheriff’s station and the buildings you see in later episodes where John B. is on the run occur in The Old Village Of Mount Pleasant. Pop into the Pitt Street Pharmacy, the neighborhood drugstore complete with a soda fountain, for an old-fashioned root beer float, milkshake, or lunch.

Finding The Outer Banks on The Barrier Islands of Charleston, SC

If you were hoping to get all dressed up and head to “Midsummers,” you’ll need to make reservations for the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. This beautiful resort has 10 miles of private beach on one of the prettiest stretches of coastline in the state. The property includes three pools that accommodate families very well and is located next to one of the Top Ten Beach Locations in the US.

” Boneyard Island”

The “Boneyard” island where the Pogues and the Kooks have a keg party is actually Hunting Island. The South Carolina State Park has campsites and five miles of beach. The island is also home to the 160-year-old Hunting Island Lighthouse. It is the only lighthouse in the state that is accessible to the public. The lighthouse is where John B. and Kiara find a clue his father left behind for him.

Here’s an “easter egg” hunt for. There’s a scene with Upstate Native Actress Brook Sill; see if you can find her. [clue: she’s not a Pogue]

John B’s House: Outer Banks on Location

As for the location of John B’s House, Outer Banks fans have been eluded. However, a set designer did confirm it was on John’s Island. Unfortunately, it is only viewable by boat in a residential neighborhood in the Seccesionville Historic District of James Island.
Keep reading for a way to see it!

One of the spookier Outer Banks filming locations is…

Old Bethel AME Church, South Carolina

One of the most iconic spots from the show is the old church that John B’s House/shack uses as a hiding place. The church is about an hour from Charleston and was my favorite location to try and find. But, I’ll tell you, it wasn’t easy. It’s located in the sleepy town of McClellanville, where if you take a wrong turn, you’ll see the evidence of alligators on the side of the road. The alligator part of the hunt was so jarring that we had to keep making u-turns to look again.

Finding John B’s House: Outer Banks Fans Will LOVE This

Once you discover the tucked-away location of the Old Bethel AME Church, it will have been worth it. But, unfortunately, the day we went, it was raining, that plus the wildlife we had witnessed just minutes before kept me in the car.
*Please, be respectful if you do visit. After the popularity of the show brought it to the attention of social media, it got vandalized. So last year, the church boarded up the building to protect it.

There are several highly recommended spots in McClellanville to check out, and this cute town deserves an entire day of exploration, so enjoy dinner before you head out!

Season 3 of Netflix’s Outer Banks: Filming Locations

Season 3 released in February 2023. Though large portions of the season were filmed in Barbados, there were still a couple of noteworthy locations near Charleston where filming took place that you can visit. During season three, you will spot the Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge. The iconic bridge is featured when John B and Big John drive across the bridge itself.

If you are traveling to Charleston, SC, you may spot some very familiar scenery when visiting the Charleston Museum. The museum is the backdrop for John B. and Big John’s heist scene in season 3. While there, learn about the history of Charleston through their exhibits at “America’s First Museum”.

One of the most beautiful spots in Mt. Pleasant is featured in season 3 when JJ rides his dirtbike down the Pitt Street Bridge. The bridge is lined with palmetto trees against the marsh, so it makes a great stop while traveling to Charleston. You will also see some familiar scenery when visiting the Joe Riley Waterfront Park. It is located just over the bridge in Charleston, SC. In season 3, you see Pope and Cleo having a heartfelt conversation at the park. The park is extremely popular thanks to its gorgeous pineapple fountain and waterfront views.

You can also head over to Folly Beach to get a glimpse of the “Redfield Lighthouse” from season three. In reality, you will be looking at the Morris Island Lighthouse off the coast, but it is a beautiful piece of history! Check out why we love the laid back vibe of Folly Beach to make your visit a little sweeter.

There’s Some Truth To The Plotline Of Netflix’s OBX!

If you think that the plot line of this show could never happen, you’re probably right.

However, fans of the show are often surprised when I tell them that The Royal Merchant was a REAL ship. The Merchant Royal was lost at sea, with a gold bounty with an estimated value in excess of 1.5 billion dollars in today’s money. Thus, making it the most valuable ship ever to be lost at sea.

AND

The captain of the 40-member crew – was a Limbrey.

The inconsistent part of the OBX plotline is the location where the ship went down. Salvage crews have searched in vain for the sunken ship for years. Then, a few years ago, a fishing vessel pulled up what is believed to be the anchor of the Merchant Royal off of the coast of Cornwall, England. The ship had been dragging its nets for several hours and claimed they had no idea when or where the anchor had originally been located.

Either way, that gold treasure won’t be washing up on the coast of the Carolinas anytime soon. Sorry.

I think it makes for an exciting vacation activity to visit the places you’ve seen on TV. Last year I covered the places you could visit in Georgia where another Netflix hit is filmed, Stranger Things.

You Can Literally Step Back Into Time: Visit Mayberry, Andy Griffith’s Hometown in Mount Airy, NC

Posted on |

What’s Inside: A fun, family-friendly guide to the best eats, sights, and nostalgic experiences in Andy Griffith’s real-life hometown!

Curious what it would be like to step back into a different era and vacation in The Andy Griffith Show’s Mayberry? Well, we packed the van with the grandparents and headed to Mount Airy, NC, Andy Griffith’s hometown to find out. We came home with full hearts (and stomachs) after experiencing three days of true Southern hospitality, classic diners plus homemade baked goods, and old-fashioned affordable fun (including a tour in a squad car).

Here’s everything we did, ate, and explored—organized by category so it’s easy for your family to plan your own Mayberry memories.

Thank you to Visit Mayberry for hosting us during our stay.

Visit Mount Airy, North Carolina: A Review

Where We Stayed in Mayberry

We stayed at a rental home just 5 minutes from downtown titled “Mayberry’s Best”, and it was definitely a spot we would recommend for other families. Our home was spacious, pet-friendly, and just right for three generations. It had a game room with a real Atari arcade machine, a big yard with a deck, and a stack of Andy Griffith DVDs in the family room.

  • Kid favorites: The home was stocked with kid-friendly games, Magna-Tiles, puzzles, and even an arcade machine.
  • Grown-up wins: Clean, roomy layout, two full bathrooms, and a great kitchen, plus we were even greeted with fresh flowers, moonpies, and a bottle of wine.
  • Pet-friendly: We didn’t bring our dog, but the home also allows you to bring a dog with a small fee. There were dog bowls and treats available. Note: The yard was not 100% fenced in, but the street wasn’t busy, and there was plenty of space for a dog to run.

The area has a number of family-friendly rentals plus hotels that aren’t far from the center. A new hotel is being built downtown that should open in Spring of 2026.

⭐Fun Fact: If you want a truly unique stay, Andy Griffith’s childhood home is available for rental stays.

Eating lunch at Snappy’s is a bucket list item when visiting Mount Airy, NC, and the best part is that you can still order a meal there for around $5. We kicked off our trip by splitting four signature sandwiches on the menu—The Ultimate Pork Chop Sandwich, Fried Bologna, Breaded Cheeseburger, and the Ground Steak Sandwich with slaw.

The booths, counter, and vintage photos made it feel like stepping into the show. We heard from one local that they once met a group that drove all the way from Ohio just to pick up a cooler of pork sandwiches.

Tip: We got in fast during our trip in the off-season, but heard the line can sometimes stretch down the sidewalk in the summer.

📍 1901 S Main Street
🔗 The Derby Restaurant

The Derby has been a local favorite since 1937 and has remained family-owned through 3 generations! We enjoyed eggs, potatoes, and southern hospitality. The biscuits were amazing, and we loved the skillet breakfast.

Dairy Center

📍 407 W Lebanon Street
🔗 Dairy Center-Trip Advisor

We ordered sweet potato pancakes, omelets, bacon, and homemade strawberry jam. Everyone thought the strawberry jam was amazing. This diner is known for its delicious ground steak, typically served as a sandwich, but we got a great tip to order it in an omelet for breakfast.  The open kitchen and retro ice cream window made this spot feel like a step back in time.

Barney’s Café

📍 206 N Main Street
🔗Barney’s Cafe

We stopped here for lunch and again at the end of our trip for a traditional milkshake and homemade slice of pie at the soda counter. The Barney Burger was great, and the homemade Coconut Pie totally stole the show. My dad said it tasted just like his mom used to make it.

Thirsty Souls Community Brewing

📍 238 Market Street
🔗Thirsty Souls Brewing

You know you are in a spot where the locals eat when you get asked where you are from while you are waiting for your meal. This brewery specializes in small-craft beers and artisan pizzas. The atmosphere was chill and family-friendly (you could even relax on a couch if a traditional table wasn’t your style). We got to stay long enough to not only enjoy a delicious flight of beer and a couple of pizzas but also to compete in a game of trivia.

Angry Troll Brewing

📍 308 N Main Street
🔗Angry Troll Brewing

This was yet another great trivia night stop! We shared cheese curds, fried pickles, fish and chips, pizza, and salad. This family-friendly brewery has not only a beer menu and full cocktail menu but also some fun mocktails for the kids (or non-alcohol drinkers).

Mount Airy, NC Activities & Things to Do

Squad Car Tour (Wally’s Service Station)

Ride in a squad car in Mt. Airy, NC

📍 625 S Main Street
🔗 Squad Car Tours

If you only do one thing in the town of Mayberry, this is it. This is one of the top Mount Airy, NC activities, and it’s no surprise why. We rode in a real 1960s squad car just like the ones in the Andy Griffith show and learned all about Mount Airy and the people and industries that make it famous. The tour takes you downtown, to the largest open-face granite mine in the world, by Andy Griffith’s childhood home, and past local architecture, much of which was made out of the local granite.

Our local guide liberally used the car’s siren and kept us laughing the whole time with his stories, and yes—it was hot inside that car since it didn’t have AC, but totally worth it.

Next to the Squad Car Tour, you can lock yourself up inside the jail at the Mayberry Courthouse or grab ice cream. This entire area is free to enter and full of fun photo ops. It’s also a great area to purchase souvenirs as they had a wide selection of Andy Griffith themed shirts and memorabilia, including even fun nods to the show, such as a jar of Aunt Bee’s Pickles.

Ghost Trolley Tour

📍 Starts at 301 N Main Street
🔗Ghost Trolley Tour Info

If you want to experience the town at night, get on the trolley for a spooky ghost tour. The ghost stories were funny, spooky, and also touched on local history. Great for adults or older kids and tweens. Walking ghost tours are also available.

Floyd’s City Barber Shop

📍 129 N Main Street
🔗Floyd’s Barber Shop

We sat in the same chair Andy and many other celebrities once did. You can peek in this Barber Shop even if you don’t need a haircut, but if you need a haircut, make an appointment. Not only will you see the famous barber chair, but also a child-sized barber chair and a cash register from a century ago.

Antiquing in Mt. Airy

Andy Griffith Museum and Playhouse

📍 218 Rockford Street
🔗Andy Griffith Museum

We took a backstage tour of the Andy Griffith Playhouse, where we learned all about Andy’s early life and career. The tour also allows you to stand on the original stage that Andy performed on in 3rd grade, as well as takes you back into the dressing rooms of the theatre.

The Playhouse is an active theatre with a performance always in rehearsal. Another way to experience the theatre is to purchase tickets to one of the many shows.

The Andy Griffith Museum showcases the largest collection of memorabilia connected to Andy Griffith, much of which was collected by a childhood friend. Inside the museum, you can watch snippets from his movies and see artifacts from his life.

Adjacent to the museum, you can also check out the Betty Lynn exhibit. Betty Lynn was known for her role in the Andy Griffith Show as Thelma Lou, Barney Fife’s girlfriend. Betty Lynn relocated to Mayberry in retirement and has played an important role in the area’s connections to the Andy Griffith Show.

This museum is best suited for older children who can read and understand the significance of the museum exhibits. For those who are Andy Griffith fans, it’s the best place to get a fuller glimpse into his life.

Museum tickets also grant access to go inside the Historic Earle Street Theatre during select times.

Siamese Twins Museum

📍 215 Rockford Street
🔗Siamese Twins Museum

We crossed the street after visiting the Andy Griffith Museum to tour the Siamese Twins Museum. This museum tells the story of Chang and Eng Bunker, the first fully documented set of conjoined twins.

Chang and Eng were born in Siam (now Thailand) but moved to the United States as adults after years of traveling the world as part of an exhibition. As young adults, they managed their own contracts and eventually amassed enough wealth to marry sisters and settle in Mount Airy.

This museum tells the story of Chang and Eng Bunker with photos, texts, artifacts, and even a life-size statue of Chang and Eng. It’s compact but fascinating. We recommend this museum for older kids and adults.

Mount Airy Museum of Regional History

📍 301 N Main Street
🔗Mount Airy Museum of Regional History

This multi-level museum surprised us with its variety of exhibits and appeal to a wide range of ages. The exhibits range from local history to a floor dedicated to fire history, complete with three retired fire engines. Since the history of Andy Griffith is prominent throughout Mount Airy, NC, especially at the Andy Griffith museum, this museum focuses mainly on additional history and people connected to the area.

If you are looking for an indoor activity to keep all ages entertained, this museum is a good choice. It offers an extensive play area on the top floor. The play area includes a playground, a full dress-up bin, puppets, a small house, and a fire pit. While there, we saw that it was a popular local hangout for small children.

While still in construction, visitors will soon be able to enjoy a new industry-themed exhibit that includes a model train room.

Blackmon Amphitheatre

📍 145 Rockford Street
🔗Blackmon Amphitheatre Info

This outdoor concert venue was one of the highlights of our trip. If you live near the area, season passes are pretty affordable and include over 50 concerts a year, but even for a night, the tickets are just $20. Kids 12 and under are free.

You can bring your own chairs, sit on the grass, or get there early enough to snag a table. The venue is casual with plenty of green space for kids to run around and dance.

If you’ve visited before, what are your favorite Mt. Airy, NC activities?

Where to Shop in Mt. Airy

Of course, we saw a couple of the normal tourist shops, but downtown Mount Airy, NC is fun, quirky, and full of local flair. We browsed everything from local sweet shops to antique stores and even found a store full of quirky socks at discount pricing, a cat cafe, and a boutique/arcade.

Andy Griffith's Mayberry

Opie’s Candy Store

📍 135 N Main Street
🔗Opie’s Candy Store

This vintage candy store is just down the street from Snappy’s. It’s not just any candy shop, though, with its vintage candy jars, ice cream counter, bottled sodas, and even old-school candy that’s hard to find, such as candy cigarettes and vintage gum.

Miss Angel’s Heavenly Pies & Hillbilly Creamery and Gluten-Free Desserts

📍 153 N Main Street | 155 N Main Street
🔗Miss Angel’s Heavenly Pies

This store is literally lined with pies. You can buy everything from a strawberry rhubarb pie to an apple pie with cinnamon buns on it. We bought perhaps the largest peanut butter cookie sandwich we have ever seen just for $4. The smell inside was amazing, and the desserts lived up to the hype. The Gluten-Free Desserts are extensive and in a separate but adjacent store. This store is also known for its moonshine-flavored desserts.

Mayberry Antique Mall

📍 160 N. Main Street
🔗 Mayberry Antique Mall

The Mayberry Antique Mall is just one of many antique shops lining Mount Airy’s downtown, but it must have been the largest.

Renfro Sock Outlet Store

📍229 N Main Street

We accidentally wandered into the Renfro Sock Outlet Store while waiting for the history museum to open. This store was truly a hidden surprise as it was full of all types of socks, from fun and quirky designs to practical white socks for tennis shoes. These socks were all amazing prices, too, since it’s an outlet of discontinued patterns.

Danabell’s Bocade

📍247 N Main Street
🔗Danabell’s Bocade Facebook

This store labels itself as Mount Airy’s very first Bocade (Boutique plus Arcade), and honestly, we hadn’t heard of that either. It was a Bocade, though. You could shop on one side and play a game system or arcade game on the other.

Blue’s Whiskers Lodge/Cat Cafe

📍133 W. Pine Street
🔗 Blue Whiskers Lodge / Cat Cafe

We discovered this cute and big-hearted cat cafe while exploring downtown, and it even had kittens. For a small fee, you can play with the cats for half an hour, and the funds go towards the cats’ care, and your play helps socialize them so they can be adopted. All the cats at this cafe are up for adoption, so watch out or you might come home with a new pet.

Why We Loved Mount Airy, NC

Mount Airy offered a beautiful mix of nostalgia, local charm, and family-friendly fun. It wasn’t just a trip down memory lane for my parents—it was a chance for three generations to connect and create shared memories.

The people we met were just as warm and welcoming as the characters in the show. Locals stopped to chat and share their town with us like we were neighbors.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan of Andy or just looking for a relaxing, affordable, and unique place to bring the kids, Mount Airy hits the mark.

Soaky Mountain Waterpark Brings Thrills for the Whole Family: Sevierville, TN

Posted on |

If you’re planning a family vacation to Eastern Tennessee, make sure to add Soaky Mountain Waterpark in Sevierville to your must-visit list! Located just minutes from Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, this massive outdoor waterpark is packed with water coasters, a lazy river with a twist, a huge wave pool, and several slides even your younger kids will get a thrill from. Erin recently visited with her kids and shares her honest Soaky Mountain Waterpark review—plus helpful tips to help you plan the ultimate day of fun in the sun!

Soaky Mountain Waterpark in Sevierville, Tennessee

I’m a sucker for a good waterpark! Give me fast slides, wave pools, and cool water on a hot day, and I’m all in. Soaky Mountain Waterpark in Sevierville, TN, totally delivered. Less than three hours from the Upstate, it’s the kind of place that makes the drive worth it.

Opened in 2020 with a whopping $90 million investment, the park brought 500 jobs to the area and brought along some much-needed entertainment to the growing area. It’s right across the street from Wilderness at the Smokies (a resort we’d absolutely recommend), and if you stay there, you can score discounted tickets to Soaky Mountain, which is a great bonus!

Soaky Mountain Waterpark near Gatlinburg, TN

Attractions at Soaky Mountain Waterpark

Soaky Mountain’s 50-acre park is loaded with thrilling waterslides and splash zones for all ages. With younger kids in tow, my husband and I took turns hitting the big rides—The Edge was an adrenaline rush ( I couldn’t stop grinning after that race), and he couldn’t get enough of The Avalaunch. The 35,000-square-foot wave pool was another highlight. The waves felt just like the ocean, minus the sharks and jellyfish. Big win! With swells reaching up to six feet, it brought serious beach vibes to the Smokies. Our family favorite had to be Black Bear Rapids, and for a good reason (keep reading to find out why!).

Rides We Loved

My kids (ages 6 and 3) loved The Hive, a multi-story water playground with several age-appropriate slides for kids, although lots of adults were playing with their kids on it.

The Hive at Soaky Mountain

Boomer’s Bay & The Edge

They also couldn’t get enough of Boomer’s Bay, which is located behind the giant Soaky Surge wave pool over by The Edge. Here, my little adrenaline junky 3 year old could ride “big kid waterslides”, which were just pint size versions of larger tube slides. Here, my husband and I took turns catching a ride on The Edge. This was my absolute favorite! The two-seater dualing watercoaster takes you on a race against another group through tubes and up the side of an incline before crowning the winner.

Our writer, Kristina, also visited Soaky Mountain in 2023 and said that The Edge was “Unreal. I screamed my head off because immediately you are sent into a stomach-churning drop, then launched into tubes with AquaLucent light rings, then another drop, then speed into more tubes with more lights. The final, three-story drop sends you high up on a near-vertical launch on the Boomerango wall. I was terrified and wanted to do it all over again.”

Rainbow’s Revenge

Kristina and her kids loved Rainbow’s Revenge, a huge, multi-passenger raft ride through a bright, colorful, and semi-fast tube. That one was a blast, and getting in line early made it a fun start to the day.

The Avalaunch

My husband was able to sneak away to ride The Avalaunch, which is touted as a “first of its kind” watercoaster. My husband was grinning ear to ear after this slide, and said it was an adrenaline rush, saying “as you go down the hill and get shot back up, you get drenched before entering two turns, before you get shot out into the wall climb, which has an awesome view”.

We spent a lot of the afternoon checking out any of the areas that our younger kids could enjoy, including the Soaky Surge wave pool, which has some pretty intense waves! We had both kids out toward the 4-foot section with their lifejackets on, and the waves were a lot of fun. Just make sure your kid can swim if they want to go out that far, or they will stop the wave action early. This is a great place to lounge, there are dozens of chairs and shade along the shore.

Black Bear Rapids

My daughter’s favorite, and possibly all of ours, was Black Bear Rapids. She has a thing for lazy rivers, so we grabbed some tubes and made our way through the course. I failed to read the sign saying that the rapids would be occurring during that time, and was pleasantly thrilled when we were floating along and a huge wave came cruising toward us! It had us all laughing hysterically, and it is such a unique take on the traditional lazy river. There are only a couple of times throughout the day that they have the rapids turned on, but it is fun either way.

For a list of all the rides, watercoasters, slides, and height and weight requirements, see the Soaky Mountain website.

Food at Soaky Mountain Waterpark

You won’t go hungry at Soaky Mountain Waterpark, there’s no shortage of food options throughout the park. From a taco truck and a frozen yogurt shop to multiple snack bars, you’ll find everything from nachos, pretzels, and popcorn to hot dogs, cookies, novelty ice cream, fresh-squeezed lemonade, ICEEs, bottled water, and fountain drinks. Just know that alcohol isn’t served on-site.

To save some money, we recommend packing your own lunch, the park allows reentry with a valid day ticket, perfect if you want to step outside to eat. Just note that outside food and drinks aren’t allowed inside the park, except for sealed water bottles.

Cabanas

Cabana rentals start at $69.99 for a two-person rental and go up to $399.99 for a 20-person rental. These are private shelters around the park that include access to a server and a limited menu (food and beverages are extra). We noticed that you could reserve them at different sections of the park, so if you know that you are going to spend a lot of time in a certain area, shoot for booking a cabana there.

I saw a lot of families utilizing these. They are great as a home base to relax, eat, rest, change diapers, etc. And you rent them by the day.

Tips For Visiting Soaky Mountain

1. Arrive Early to Maximize Your Day
One of the best tips for visiting Soaky Mountain Waterpark is to get there early. We visited at the beginning of June, and many of the lines were short early in the day. However, at midday, the crowds began to form, and the waits for the bigger slides were much longer. Still, the earlier you go, the more rides you can enjoy with little to no lines.

2. Rent a Locker for Your Stuff
Lockers are available near the entrance and are totally worth it if you’re bringing towels, dry clothes, your wallet, or other valuables. The smallest lockers cost $13 for the day, and they give you peace of mind so you can focus on the fun without juggling your gear. We just carried out things from place to place, but after a chat with a local, we realized it was because it was early in the season. For peak season (June/July/August), there are almost no chairs to lay your things down in.

3. Skip the Water Shoes, Maybe
Wondering if you need water shoes at Soaky Mountain? We didn’t find them necessary. Many waterslides don’t allow shoes anyway, so we stashed ours in the locker and went barefoot. The ground wasn’t too hot, even in the afternoon sun. That said, if you’re sensitive to heat or prefer sandals for walking between attractions, bring a pair just in case.

4. Be Ready for Some Stair Climbing
This waterpark doubles as a leg workout! Many of the best rides, like the mat racing slide and several tube slides, require a climb to the top. Plus, you may also be dragging along a float. One of our favorite slides had nearly 100 steps, and we rode it multiple times. My legs definitely felt it the next day, but it was totally worth it. If you need to pause and catch your breath, don’t worry—there are plenty of landings to rest on the way up.

Soaky Mountain Tickets

A one-day ticket online for adults (over 42”) is $52.99 and tickets for kids under 42” are $43.99. Ages 2 and under are free. The family 4 pack is a steal at $43.99 per ticket. If you go after 4 pm, tickets are slightly cheaper.

If you stay at Wilderness at the Smokies resort across the street, you can purchase discounted tickets or even get them for free during some specials. We were able to snag a deal during the last weekend of May that included free tickets to Soaky Mountain, which we took the shuttle from the hotel to the waterpark and back. A season pass also includes discounted rooms at Wilderness at the Smokies.

Parking is $14.75/car when bought online and $19.25/bus and RVs. If you’re paying at the gate, it costs around $20/car.

Hours vary, so look at the Soaky Mountain Waterpark calendar to see updated hours before you go. They are open mid-May through August, and with select dates in September, weather permitting. They also have a rain check policy if the park has to close for more than 90 minutes.

#1 Hipcamp in North Carolina: Planetarium geodome, amazing overlooks, spa on site, beautiful views

Posted on |

Inside: A real parent review of Starlight Hills Campground in Bostic, NC with all the details.

Starlight Hills Campground in Bostic, NC, under 90 minutes from Greenville, SC, has been named the #1 Hipcamp in North Carolina for three years running and we just had to figure out why – so we went. Now we know why it’s #1.

Thanks to Starlight Hills for having us to their amazing property so we could write a review!

Watch! Our Stay at Starlight Hills

I love camping and when I learned of Hipcamp, which is like an AirBnB for campgrounds, I signed up and started flagging properties that looked amazing, which is how I initially heard of Starlight Hills Campground. Years later, I got my wish to stay there and wow, I can see why campers love this spot.

I can’t even tell you what I liked most: the hammocks at the community overlook where you take in views of the mountains, the private spa, the geodome with a planetarium, the hiking trails, the nearby fantastic swimming holes. So I’ll just tell you about all of them and how you can plan your adventure to Starlight Hills.

About Starlight Hills

This campground came into being kind of by accident. William and his wife moved to the area in 2019 to have space, to have land, and to enjoy the beauty of Western NC. They were nearly under contract for a different property closer to Asheville when it was swiped out from under them. Thankfully, this 40-acre property in Bostic, North Carolina was even better than their first option.

Starlight Hills spa and geodome
Spa and geodome

But William didn’t really have a plan for a campground. He didn’t know what he wanted to do with the land but was happy to have it. He worked in the technology industry, one that was customer-facing, so when the pandemic hit, he was laid off. Out of job and with a bunch of land, he opened an email his cousin sent him that linked to Hipcamp and suggested maybe he could host some people on this land.

What a cool idea, he thought. So he got some gas for his chainsaw and cleared three tent sites. And people booked them. Then he cleared some more sites, built roads through the campground, constructed decks for canvas tents, and eventually made a larger deck where the newest lodging – the beautiful LunaView Geodome – sits.

People kept coming back again and again. And they really loved the property, so much so that the campground has been #1 on Hipcamp in North Carolina for three years running.

The Sites & Lodgings

Wiliam told me that when he was designing the campground and sites, he wanted something that he would book himself, which meant big, private wooded sites. As a tent camper myself, I enthusiastically agreed with him on these points. Every site is private and huge, even the ones with the canvas tent and the geodome.

The property is very peaceful and serene. It has two hiking trails – one to a creek and the other to a gorgeous, 180-degree view of the surrounding mountains.

The tent sites are big – I saw a couple sites that had three tents at them. The bell canvas tents are beautiful and built on platforms and can sleep up to four people. You can put a tent on those sites if needed as well.

The LunaView Planetarium Geodome

As for my LunaView Geodome, it was gorgeous. It’s perched at the end of one of the roads and on a large deck. The bed is heavenly and there’s a table with benches, a pullout sofabed, and a giant beanbag chair.

The lighting is super cool. There are floor lights that change the color of the inside of the dome plus two different lights that create a planetarium effect with a giant moon and Milky Way and aurora borealis (the Northern Lights).

Starlight Hills geodome aurora
Aurora projected on the ceiling of the dome

So at night, you can be in the dark and turn on the planetarium lights and be amazed. My inner 80s child that put up glow-in-the-dark stars on my bedroom ceiling was loving this.

The dome was totally clean and comfortable. I never sleep well when I travel but I slept so great here!

They have fans for cooling and heating in the winter.

The Spa

Yes, there’s a spa at Starlight Hills. It’s a campground so it’s not a five-star massage and champagne experience but wow, it’s relaxing and beautiful.

spa at starlight hills
Hot tub in the spa

The spa consists of a hot tub overlooking the mountains, a small seating area, and a delightful sauna. I love hot tubs and saunas but I rarely use them so this was a huge treat. It was quiet, private, and just a time to do nothing and relax. I have a tough time doing nothing and relaxing but after hiking all day and jumping in cold swimming holes, the spa felt amazing so it was easy to chill out and be in the moment.

I think this is an incredibly unique aspect to Starlight Hills because while it is a campground, there are certain things like this that help to elevate your getaway experience that fits in beautifully with nature and the outdoors.

You have to reserve the spa ahead of time, which you can do via Swimply or by adding it as an extra when you book on Hipcamp.

Showers, Bathrooms and the Community Overlook

Camping – or glamping – at Starlight Hills is rustic. It’s beautiful, but rustic.

Personally, I loved the outdoor showers. They are private and have soap and shampoo and hot water. What else do you really need?

There is no bathhouse on the property but they do have porta-potties near the showers and another one near the community overlook. William told me they are hoping to add more restrooms and build a bathhouse, but those are not inexpensive and take time.

Starlight Hills sunset
Sunset at Starlight Hills

The community overlook was another one of my favorite spots here. It has several picnic tables and grills with a stunning view of the sunset. I relaxed out there one night in one of the hammocks watching the sunset. It was absolute perfection.

Nearby Fun

As if Starlight Hills wasn’t cool enough already, the location is absolutely ideal for outdoor activities. And if you’re reading this far, I’ll reward you with a very hidden swimming hole tip. It’s called Pot Branch Falls and it’s only about a 15 minute drive from the campground and then a 10 minute hike from the parking area. It’s a totally hidden and private swimming hole that is amazing.

Here are other fun things to do nearby:

Big Bear Falls

This is an awesome waterfall in South Mountains State Park, about a 25 minute drive from the campground. There are deep pools to swim, shallow areas to wade, and even a waterfall you can sit under. Park in the Jacob Creek access area and it’s about a 0.5 mile hike from the parking lot.

South Mountains State Park

Speaking of the park, it has miles and miles of trails to hike. Some are still closed due to Hurricane Helene damage but I was able to clock over 7 miles by connecting Chestnut Knob, which has a gorgeous overlook, Sawtooth, Little River, Raven Rock, and the River Trail. And I even found a nice swimming hole at the end of the hike to jump in, which felt amazing.

Here’s our Kidding Around review of South Mountains State Park.

Linville Gorge

Some trails at the Linville Gorge, like Shortoff Mountain, are under an hour from the campground. The Gorge is stunningly beautiful with amazing trails. Be sure to have a map on paper or downloaded on your phone as it’s rugged.

Lake James State Park

While most of this park is closed due to Hurricane Helene damage, I wanted to add to the story to keep in mind for the future when it opens back up. During normal operations, you can swim, hike, or paddle at this North Carolina State Park close to the campground.

What to bring to Starlight Hills

Starlight Hills is a campground so you’ll need some of what you’d normally bring camping like food, a cooler, towels, and flashlights.

I’d also recommend flip-flops, bug spray, maybe some camping chairs, and if you’re like me and can’t start a fire for anything, a camping stove. You can order firewood at your site when you book on Hipcamp. If you plan to grill out, bring charcoal.

Also via Hipcamp when you book at Starlight Hills, you can also add a kids camping bundle with magic flames, camping bag, and flashlight, s’mores packet, tiki torch rental, and reusable water bottles.

Overall Review

I love tent camping but also love not having to bring a tent and everything that goes along with it while having a blast at a cool campground. The LunaView geodome was such a cool experience not only because of its many unique aspects but also because I didn’t have to lug a tent, camping pad, tarp, etc. with me. It was so clean, comfortable, and private and a true oasis to return to after a day of exploring and adventuring.

The time at the spa was fantastic. I hardly ever to get to do nothing for a little while while enjoying views in a hot tub. If I go back here, which I hope to do, I’ll be booking time at the spa.

Chilling in the hammock

And William was so helpful and kind. He gave me precise directions to the swimming holes, which were certainly a highlight of the trip, and shared his love of the area freely. I was amazed at what he has been able to accomplish since moving here basically without any kind of plan. His no-plan has turned into a place where many beautiful memories are made.

Starlight Hills is perfect for families, couples, or friend groups. Literally anyone will have fun here.

So now you know why Starlight Hills gets first place in North Carolina for Hipcamp’s best campgrounds.

Booking Starlight Hills

You have to book your site at Starlight Hills via Hipcamp. If you’ve never used the platform before, it’s very easy to do so. You just create an account and go book your adventure.

At the time of this writing, tent sites are $38/night, the bell canvas tents are $105/night, and the LunaView geodome is $144/night. They also have a tiny house cabin for $98/night. Prices may change, especially during busier times of the year.

The lodgings are pet-friendly.
