Posted on |

Summer in South Carolina can be, um, intense, to say the least! In this guest post from realtor Elizabeth Faulkner, she shares her top 5 favorite spring activities that you and your family should tackle before the heat dictates what you can and can’t joyfully (or even safely) do! Outdoor activities are still manageable, so check out the list and plan your family’s next outdoor adventure now—before it’s too late!

As spring winds to a close I find myself bracing for the dog days of summer. Lucky for us here in the Upstate of South Carolina, June tends to be a month with some lingering beautiful spring-like days! So, before my family hunkers down at our neighborhood pool for the hottest part of the summer, we make every effort to get outside and enjoy SPRING while we still have it! Here are a few of our favorite things we try to do every year in the short season we love so very much.

Located in Greenville, Birds Fly South has a green space on which kids can run around and play. Plus, the popular White Duck Taco is right next door!

St. Joseph's Catholic School Sixth Grade Academy Greenville, SC

Single-Gendered Classrooms

One of the unique aspects of the Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School is that all classes are single-gendered. The staff at St. Joseph’s want children to be confident in who they are, particularly in the school building and the community. During the middle school years, there’s rapid discovery, growth, and questioning. Single-gendered classrooms allow for a more tailored approach to teaching and learning, as teachers can address the specific needs and learning styles of boys and girls separately. This approach has been shown to increase confidence and academic growth in students, as they are able to focus on their own learning without distractions or pressures from the opposite gender.

Separate Sixth-Grade Wing

The Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville, SC is housed in a separate wing of the school, providing a unique and focused learning environment for students. This allows for a sense of independence and ownership over their learning experience, while still being a part of the larger school community. The wing includes classrooms, lockers, and a common area. This separation also helps to ease the transition from elementary to middle school for students, as they have their own space to navigate and grow in.

Small Class Sizes

One of the standout features of the Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School is the small class sizes and individualized attention that students receive. With class sizes generally capping at 22 students, teachers are able to provide personalized instruction and support to each student. This allows for a more tailored learning experience and helps students to reach their full potential. Additionally, the close-knit community at St. Joseph’s fosters a supportive environment where students feel valued and encouraged to succeed.

Team Mentality for Both Students and Teachers

One of the standout features of the Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School is the team mentality that is fostered among both teachers and students. It’s the secret sauce of the school. There’s a strong love of collaboration among the teachers. And there is a dedicated team of teachers within the Sixth Grade Academy. All of the sixth grade teachers know all of the students. This helps to ensure that no student runs under the radar. Teachers work collaboratively to plan lessons and activities that are engaging and challenging for students, while also providing individualized support when needed. Students are encouraged to work together and support each other in their learning, creating a sense of community and belonging within the Academy. This team mentality helps to create a positive and supportive learning environment for all involved.

St. Joseph's Catholic School Sixth Grade Academy Greenville, SC

Responsive and Flexible Schedule

The Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville, SC offers a responsive and flexible schedule that allows for personalized learning experiences. This approach helps students to develop a deeper understanding of the curriculum and build confidence in their abilities. Additionally, the flexible schedule allows for more time to be spent on subjects that students may struggle with, ensuring that they have a strong foundation for future academic success. There’s even a well-loved class called Foundations that exists to help students with executive functioning, reading, and more. There’s lots of room for flexibility in this class alone to address any issues or situations that need more attention.

Virtue Education & Community Involvement

Each quarter, St. Joseph’s focuses on two Catholic virtues: Fortitude, Perseverance, Courage, Self-Disipline,  Compassion, Loyalty, Prudence, Responsibility, and Faith. The school tries to incorporate these virtues into many of the lessons throughout the year. Community members are invited to visit and share how these virtues have played a role in their lives. Members of the police department, nurses, priests, servicemen, and even Pearle Harris have spoken to students. Each quarter, students work on an altruism project where they choose a way to help others either in the immediate community or somewhere in the world. In 2021, for example, students works with Set Free Alliance and raised funds to sponsor a well for a village in Africa.

Overall, the Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School offers a unique and effective approach to education that sets students up for success in their academic and personal lives. Admission season opens in early October, but St. Joseph’s offers rolling admissions, as well. So if you’re interested in attending, be sure to apply as soon as possible to secure your spot.

Green Laundry Lounge: A Modern Laundromat Taking the Hassle Out of Laundry in Greer, SC

Posted on |

What do laundry, coffee, and wifi have to do with each other? You’ll find all three at Green Laundry Lounge, a modern, eco-friendly laundromat in Greer, SC. And this is not what you imagine when you think of a typical laundromat. It’s bright, incredibly clean, modern, and comfortable. They offer a variety of services from self-service to drop-off services, all geared to take the hassle out of laundry day.

What is Green Laundry Lounge in Greer, SC?

Have you ever seen a poll that says something like “Which is worse: doing laundry or cooking dinner?” I don’t know about you, but I have no hesitation in telling you that I despise doing laundry. I’d rather clean toilets than do laundry. Laundry is so time-consuming and boring. But Green Laundry Lounge may change my mind.

Green Laundry Lounge’s Founder and Part-Owner, Jay Desai, is trying to reinvent laundry and dry-cleaning services so communities and families can spend more time together. Desai, who cares deeply for the environment, built a sustainable laundromat. With energy-efficient washers, dryers, and sustainable laundry products, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your laundry is being cleaned safely.

Green Laundry Lounge has an outdoor park, patio, lounge with food and drink options, an iPad station for both kids and adults, books, and a kid’s area to encourage community and gathering together. While you can drop your laundry off, you’re also invited to stay and spend time with your family while you’re doing your laundry.

The entire facility is bright, clean, and well-maintained.

How do the Laundry and Dry-Cleaning Services work at Green Laundry Lounge?

Green Laundry Lounge’s laundromat uses some of the best laundry appliances available. With washer capacities up to 80 lbs and dryers up to 83 lbs, you’ll be able to wash and dry up to 9 loads at a time (think about how much time you’ll save!). You’re able to choose as many washers and dryers as you’d like, or just utilize one. The largest capacity machines can get you in and out in under an hour.

Each machine has a delicate cycle for your most fragile fabrics. And yes, you can certainly wash and dry your large items like those down comforters and your pet’s bedding.

As for the Dry Cleaning services, Green Laundry Lounge actually uses an Organic Dry Cleaning Technology, better known as Wet-Cleaning. No harsh or harmful chemicals or solvents are used. They only use bio-degradable soap, conditioner, and water. The staff is careful in handling your delicates, and steam machines take care of your ironing and pressing needs.

Green Laundry Lounge offers same-day laundry and dry cleaning services. You can stay and wait on your laundry or drop it off to pick it up later.

They also offer a convenient rewards program that rewards you each time you come in. With every purchase, you get points that can be used for discounts or free services. It’s a great way to save money while getting your clothes clean and fresh.

The Cafe and Lounge at Green Laundry Lounge in Greer

Green Laundry Lounge has a Cafe & Lounge with both indoor and outdoor seating. You can have a hand-crafted specialty coffee, traditional chai, Beer & Wine, and a snack while waiting on your laundry. There’s even wifi if you want to get some work done while you’re there.

Most ingredients are sourced locally. Desai believes that if you can find something in Greer or localy, why would you go somewhere else to source it?

While some of the items on the menu are standard year-round, there are also seasonal options. During my visit, I tried the Caramel Crunch Latte, and it did not disappoint.

10 Amazing Activities from Dan Hamilton that You Need to Do This Fall

Posted on |

Summer is winding down, school is starting, and if you’re like me, your family is finally returning to a schedule!

Some of my kids are happy to be back in the swing of things, and others are still wishing for summer days. For those looking for a fun activity or two to help ease your family back into the school year, enjoy this list of some of my family’s favorites. This list includes the very newest and most popular Greenville attractions right along with some old classics.

Let’s get started!

Clare’s Creamery

Clare’s Creamery is Greenville’s neighborhood small batch ice cream shop, dedicated to delivering the highest quality ingredients and the most delicious ice cream ever! The shop is a lifelong dream of founder Caitlin Clare’s, and that dream finally became a reality in 2020 with Clare’s Creamery.

Clares Creamery

Beat the heat and run over to Clare’s Creamery for a locally made sweet treat. You can find Clare’s ice cream at their brick-and-mortar (1635 East North Street) or at their pop-up in The Commons shared with The Bake Room.

Chestnut Coffee House & Local Market

Chestnut brings a whole new meaning to the word community. This coffee shop and local market has proven wildly popular since its grand opening in January – so much so that the owners opened a new location this month!

Chestnut Coffee

Enjoy expertly poured handcrafted coffee beverages, created with house-made syrups and Methodical Roastery coffee. Kids can enjoy Chestnut Ice Cream and Scout’s Doughnuts as well as a variety of delicious lunch foods and snacks.

Chestnut Coffee House is located in the Hollingsworth community on Rocky Slope Road, and their new location is on East Curtis Street in Simpsonville. Grab an iced coffee and enjoy Hollingsworth park only a short walk away. Families with young children will especially love the two playgrounds located in the park with lots of space to run around!

Unity Park

Doubtless you’ve heard about Greenville’s newest green space and playground, Unity Park. This beautiful 60-acre park features a 4,100-square-foot splash pad, 2 huge green spaces, 4 playgrounds, picnic tables and shaded sitting areas, and so much more. Plus, the park sits right on the Swamp Rabbit Trail and provides direct access to walking and biking trails (if you’re looking for a guide to the Swamp Rabbit, I have one of those too)!

Unity Park

If you get tired of playing out in the sun, there are all sorts of indoor spots to enjoy right next to the park. The Commons provides tons of seating (indoor and outdoor) and multiple restaurants to enjoy (my family loves the burger at GB&D). A short walk across the Reedy River will bring you to Southerside Brewing, a brewery with a full food menu, live music, regular community markets and other events.

Group Therapy

Group Therapy is one of Greenville’s newest forms of entertainment. The indoor “playground” features an 18-hole mini golf course full of fun movie themes, ice curling, ping-pong, axe-throwing, and backyard games. You will also find a food menu with lots of delicious shareable plates.

If that August heat is getting to you, Group Therapy is the perfect place to enjoy summer (or back-to-school) family fun indoors! They do corporate events too; I’ve planned one there for my team at Hamilton & Company!

Looking for a fun parents’ night out? Group Therapy is 21+ after 7pm each night. Enjoy speciality cocktails, a 30-tap self-serve beer wall, and a transformed party atmosphere!

Group Therapy is located in the Camperdown Plaza and is only a short walk from Insomnia Cookies, Starbucks, Jeni’s Ice Cream, and other local favorites.

Discovery Island

What better way to beat the heat than to spend the day at the waterpark? Discovery Island at Southside Park in Simpsonville has tons of water activities for everyone in the family!

Enjoy two water slides, a lazy river, wave rider, and more! Discovery Island also has food available for purchase and lots of seating and shade for those not participating in the water activities.

Flying Rabbit Adventures

Flying Rabbit Adventures is a 3-story aerial park and a favorite summer activity for the Hamilton & Co. team

Flying Rabbit

No matter your experience, there’s a track here for you! Flying Rabbit has three different courses ranging in difficulty, plus courses just for kids. If you’re not a fan of heights, you can enjoy a performance bike track and challenge course, along with other great adventures!

Flying Rabbit is located at Holland Park, a mixed-use development space that is home to Greenville’s famous Home Team BBQ, Double Stamp Brewery, and more!

3’s

Have you heard of 3’s? Formally Crosswinds Par 3, “3’s” has transformed the Par 3 into a 12-hole putting course designed by world-renowned golf course architects. The putting green is perfect for a family day (or night) out, plus you’ll get to enjoy delicious food and drinks from the 3’s Grill.

3s Golf

This experience is truly unlike anything else in town! In addition to booking a personal tee-time, you can take advantage of weekly events like Friday Date Night and Family Sundays.

ReCraft GVL

Looking to stock up on school supplies responsibility and affordably this year? Recraft GVL is South Carolina’s first “creative reuse center,” collecting reusable materials from manufacturers, institutions, and households across the Upstate and redistributing them in their brick and mortar on Haywood Road.

In addition to shopping at ReCraft, you can donate your time or old supplies to their store! Visit ReCraft’s Website and Instagram to learn more about these opportunities.

Skateland USA

Skateland USA, located on White Horse Road, is an indoor skating rink the whole family can enjoy! There is also a toddler rink available.

BlocHaven

Get those after-school wiggles out at BlocHaven, Greenville’s community-oriented rock climbing gym and cafe. At BlocHaven, there are multiple climbing areas with routes suitable for all ages and experience levels.

On your first visit, be prepared to sign a waiver for each participant and sit through a short orientation. After that, signing in is simple. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult, so plan to stick around and watch (or even climb with) your little ones. We’ve seen children as young as three years old having a blast in the space!

We love making Greenville feel more like home for its residents by sharing our local recommendations! Interested in investing in Greenville? My team at Hamilton & Co. is the top-rated real estate team in the Upstate, and I would love to help you buy a home here. Give me a call at 864-527-7685 and tell me what you’re looking for; I’d love to help you make your real estate dreams come true!  — Dan

An Inclusive & Fun Dental Experience Your Child Will Look Forward To at Cherry Orchard

Posted on |

Looking for a great pediatric dentist? Like most parents, I am particular about which doctors I choose for my children. I look for ones that listen, don’t rush through exams, have good communication skills, are sympathetic and understanding, and of course, ones that do an excellent job taking care of my kids. I’ve been looking for a new pediatric dentist and decided to try Cherry Orchard Pediatric Dentistry, headed up by Dr. Lisa Cherry, DDS, who has been practicing for 20 years.

She and her whole staff have been amazing from setting up the appointment, reminders, payment plans, and then all the work done at the actual appointments. I went there with high expectations and have been so pleased with our experience and am happy to tell you all about it.
