Four Waterslides and a Spray Pad for Summer Fun at Otter Creek Water Park in Greenville, SC

Posted on | 3 Comments

Has your family been to Otter Creek Water Park in Greenville, SC? As one of three waterparks operated by Greenville County Recreation, Otter Creek has multiple waterslides, a huge sprayer pad, and a beach access pool to splish and splash around with your kids. Find out what we love most and check out our Otter Creek Water Park review before you visit.

What Fun You’ll Find at Otter Creek Water Park

Otter Creek is the perfect waterpark for your family to cool off from the humid southern heat or lounge by the pool under the gigantic sun shade umbrellas. Your family can spend a day of fun in the sun at a waterpark, without ever having to leave Greenville!

Waterslides

The water park has four awesome water slides in total. The 32 ft tall tower houses three of the slides, including two body slides and a tube slide. The body slides require you to be 42” or taller to enjoy, but children shorter than 42” can enjoy the tube slides with an adult.

The green body slide has lots of twists and turns, which I thought was exciting and not too intense. This slide goes fast but not too fast, so younger kids can enjoy it. The white slide, however, is for the more adventurous at heart. It features a steep drop at the beginning that will have you slightly hovering during takeoff (as my husband says) and is pretty fast. The blue tube slide has inflatables, and my two year old had a blast riding down the 100-yard slide with me.

There is also an adorable kiddy slide where younger children a taste of what a water slide is like. The slide is very wide so parents can go down with their children, or multiple children can slide down together into the pool below.

Beach Entry Leisure pool

The beach entry pool is wonderful and baby-friendly! It is large enough so that you can have some space between you and those around you, which is nice considering how packed the waterpark can get a prime time. There is a shallow area for small children to practice their swimming skills, and a slightly deeper area if you want to go for a swim yourself.  Surrounding the pool are lots of lounge chairs, so you can find a spot to lay out a towel before going in and out of the pool. There are also a dozen or so extra-large umbrellas that provide ample shade, but be sure to get to the waterpark early to secure a spot.

Splash Pad

The splash pad was the highlight of my three-year-old daughter’s waterpark adventure. The 2,400 square foot splash pad has several sprayers, a bucket dump, and geysers that my 8-month-old enjoyed sticking her toes in. The splash pad is a great size, and it is something everyone can enjoy to cool off from the heat, even if you are just enjoying the lounge chairs instead of a swim.

Party Hut Rentals

Otter Creek offers party hut rentals located at the back of the park closer to concessions. Otter Creek party packages are for groups of 10 children and two adults. The package includes waterpark admission, a 2-hour hut rental, 2 pizzas, drinks and cutlery, downloadable invitations, and a t-shirt for the birthday kid. Additional adults will need to purchase their entry. Birthday party packages start at $300 (+tax). And just an FYI, you can also rent the entire waterpark!

Before Going Into Otter Creek Water Park

Tickets

Otter Creek offers affordable ticket prices that include reentry if you need to leave for a few minutes to have a picnic or grab something from your car. Tickets purchased online for adults and kids over 42 inches are $13.50 while anyone under 42 inches is $10.00. Children 2 years old and under are free!

Just be aware that if you purchase your tickets online, they are all $13.50 because of the inability to check height beforehand.  You can also purchase an individual waterpark season pass, including the Rec’N Crew Annual Pass which allows you to visit all three parks for the summer season.

What to Bring

  • Of course, bring towels and your swimsuit.
  • Bring sunscreen to avoid those pesky sunburns.
  • Water shoes or sandals are a must so that you and your kids can easily travel from the water areas to the concessions or your lounge chair. The ground gets HOT!
  • If your child is under 42”, they will be required to wear a lifejacket, so bring your own or borrow one from the waterpark.
  • Non-potty-trained kids will also need a swim diaper that is fitted and snug.
  • Lockers are available if you would like to store anything valuable while out for a swim.

Concessions Offered

Otter Creek does have limited concessions to purchase, with treats like ice cream and freeze pops available. They also have pizza, soda, water, chips, and a few other simple foods. You can purchase a whole pizza (if they haven’t run out). If you are looking for something more satiating, I recommend bringing a cooler with water and lunch with you and leaving it in the car ( you will not be allowed to bring it inside.) You can go have a picnic lunch and come back afterward for more water time.

Parking

There is deceivingly a lot of parking (that I didn’t notice until I was waiting at the top of the water slide). The main lot is located off Darby Road, and it gets full quickly, but drive up past the fork and you will find additional parking. If you are lucky, you may even find a spot in the shade!

See Red Pandas, Black Bears, Gray Wolves, and Pet Goats & Sheep at This Nature Center Near Asheville

Posted on | 6 Comments

After I saw photos from the Western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville, NC, I knew that my family would have to go. We love outdoor adventures and seeing animals, so I knew that my kids enjoy a visit. When we decided to finally visit, the WNC Nature Center was even better than I anticipated. If you haven’t been, you need to schedule a visit.

The WNC Nature Center reopens to the public on March 17th, 2025!

Why the WNC Nature Center is so cool

The WNC Nature Center focuses on animals and plants in the southern Appalachian mountains so you’ll get to see animals that roamed this area eons ago up to the present day. The uniqueness of this aspect helps guests to understand more about their own environment and animals they may see in the area.

The center is built into nature with lots of shade, walkways, and natural playgrounds. It’s not huge so it’s very manageable for a day trip, especially with smaller children. The exhibits are interactive and fun for kids of all ages and the park is hardly commercialized.

What You Will See at the WNC Nature Center

You will start your visit in the Appalachian Station where kids can see a variety of small animals and reptiles. Children will also enjoy interacting with a textured wall and looking at rocks under microscopes.

Then, you will venture outside where you will follow paved and wooden sidewalks through animal exhibits. Most of the animals are behind glass or chain link fences but the exhibits themselves are large and full of animal play structures. These animal exhibits include: otters, raccoons, foxes, gray wolves, cougars, coyotes, bobcats, black bears, hawks, owls, and more. There is a brand new red panda exhibit with the cutest, fluffiest red panda ever. And the red wolf exhibit is an educational experience unto itself.

While exploring, you will also find the Trillium Nature Trail, a .6 mile nature trail to allow children to see the beauty along the Swannanoa River.

Kids will enjoy the Arachnid Adventure, a playground based on spider web jungle gyms. This playground also is surrounded by spiders hiding on the surrounding trees making a fun “eye-spy game”. There are also other playgrounds scattered throughout the park where kids use natural materials to build and play with.

Otter Falls also has a slide that kids can play on while they watch the active animals enjoy the water.

Your visit will end at the Western North Carolina Farm where kids will get to pet animals and even pretend to be farmers themselves in an interactive play zone with small wheelbarrows and tools inside the huge barn. Be sure to check out “water painting” nearby. A gem mine is also next to the barn and the buckets can be purchased in the little shop.

A new Songbird Garden is near the wolves and built like a big wall but cutouts to try to find the birds that are pictured on the wall.

Sensory Bags are available for free

For parents of children with autism or sensory processing disorders, free sensory bags can be signed out at the gift shop upon entering the center. They are sponsored by KultureCity, a national non-profit, and include headphones, a fidget toy, and a feelings chart.

Signs are posted throughout the park indicating areas to perhaps use the headphones. It’s great that the WNC Nature Center now has these available!

Accessibility at Western North Carolina Nature Center

Should I bring a stroller?

If you’ve got small kids, bring a stroller or rent one ($10) there. There are lots of hills and little legs will probably get tired. There are plenty of places to rest and enjoy the animals and playgrounds but yes, strollers would be ideal.

Our Experience at the WNC Nature Center

We came later in the day, so we ended up missing the petting zoo (it closed at 4 pm) and didn’t have time to explore the trail. My kids had such a great time though that we hardly missed the extra activities. We easily spent two hours exploring and could have spent another 30 minutes if the nature center would have been open longer. We tend to be slow visitors to attractions, so your family may tour the center quicker especially if you don’t have small children who want to play in the play areas.

Petting Zoo at WNC Asheville

I really enjoyed that the layout and outdoor walkways seemed more like a nature walk than zoo. The animals were active in the cool fall air and most of them were easily visible. The paths were easy to follow, though it was confusing figuring out which way to turn to explore the center without missing any of the exhibits.

My kids favorite exhibits were the Otter Falls and the WNC Farm play area. I personally loved watching the cougars and was thrilled to get some wonderful photos even through glass. I was disappointed that glass and fences made it difficult and even impossible to get good photos of some of the animals, but at least the animals were easy to see in person.

Some concessions are available through vending machines and new concession areas will likely be opening in the next year.  The center also has plenty of picnic space for families wanting to bring a lunch. The WNC Nature Center is also right beside a large park with a playground, picnic shelters, and public pool. The center has restrooms in the ticket access, barn near the petting zoo, at the arachnid climbing playground, and in the Appalachian Station which are wheelchair accessible.

Open: 7 days a week, 10 am – 3:30 pm
Admission: $13.95/ adults ($1 off for seniors), $13.95/ youth (13-15), $9.95/ kids (ages 3 – 12) 2 and younger free

If you are looking for art classes for kids in Greenville, SC, then you have to try Yellowbobbypins! Make art, get messy with paint, learn something new, and take home their creation. What could be better?

Yellowbobbypins Art Camp in Greenville, South Carolina

My four-year-old daughter and I were invited to create some art at one of Yellowbobbypins’ art classes at their Hampton Station location. It was such a joyful experience that further strengthened her interest in the creative arts. Yellowbobbypins has art playgroups, art classes, party packages, and even art camps for the budding artist in your life. Find out more about Yellowbobbypins below.

A special thank you to Lauren Runion, owner of Yellowbobbypins, for having us for this review!

Art Classes for Kids: Yellowbobbypins Art Camp at Hampton Station

My daughter loves to create art, but finding art classes for kids that fit her age range hasn’t always been easy. Good thing Yellowbobbypins has art classes for kids ages 2 – 12! From the moment we walked into Yellowbobbypins owner Lauren Runion’s studio space at Hampton Station, I knew we were in the perfect place to create comfortably.

Firstly, Lauren exudes creativity and kindness. It was beautiful watching her interact with the children in a kind, calm, and direct way. Her passion for art is delightful and she is such a talented art educator. Her knowledge stems from many years of experience as an art teacher in the public school system.

Throughout the class, she patiently guided the kids through each step of their project and addressed each child by name. She was helpful and attentive to each child and their project.

My daughter is a little nervous in new situations (as am I), and Lauren made it a point to ask her questions about her art pieces and to include her with the other children who regularly attend classes. This really brought out her creativity and interest in the class, making for a memorable experience for both of us.

Drop-in and Semester Long Art Classes

For the budding artist in your life, Yellowbobbypins offers semester classes, drop-in art classes, homeschool classes, holiday camps, summer camps, and classes for ages 4 and under. Classes strengthen creative problem-solving, build confidence, and teach about various art techniques such as painting, drawing, and mixed media art.

The in-person art classes are located at the Hampton Station studio. Kids of all ages are welcome, with classes in groups of different age ranges. Parents can opt to have their child in the classes for the full semester, exploring a core theme throughout. Or, drop-in classes are also available, where the child can join the group to explore the theme for that day.

There are class options for morning, afternoon, and evening classes throughout the week. When my daughter went for a drop-in visit, she explored Mexican Hojalata metal and mirror art! These classes are 1 hour long, guided classes with the instructor, and the kids constantly learn as they go.  Classes are available throughout the school year, but there are no classes during the summertime (but there are summer camps your child can join!). Find out more and register for art classes at Yellowbobbypins on their website.

Yellowbobbypins offers Wee Create art playgroups for ages 2-6. Plus, you do not have to worry about cleanup. These classes are currently offered twice per month during the school year.

Here, parents and children can engage in art play that strengthens creativity through engaging and interactive lessons. Kids will build on their fine motor skills, explore with their hands with art materials, socialize with other kids, and engage their senses through sensory play.

During the art playgroup, the kids will explore different sensory stations with different topics, like oceans and cities. Adult participation is required for the art playgroups, but parents will have just as much fun creating as their kids will. Art playgroups are 1-hour long morning classes, with some parent/child activity classes occasionally offered during evening hours. You can register for classes on the Yellowbobbypins website.

Mom Review: Charlotte’s Web at South Carolina Children’s Theatre

Posted on |

Get ready for all the heartfelt nostalgia that comes along with seeing the South Carolina Children’s Theatre’s production of a childhood classic, Charlotte’s Web! On opening night, I was able to bring my four-year-old daughter along to watch her experience the tale of friendship between a pig and a spider for the first time.

We giggled, shed a few tears together, and she was beaming with curiosity after the show about the story and all of the performers. This production is truly heartwarming, with amazing actors, a pleasant music selection, and a spectacular set and crew. Charlotte’s Web is running through October 8th, 2023, so grab your tickets while you still can!

Writing in Charlotte's web for Wilbur at the South Carolina Children's Museum

What to Look Forward To at Charlotte’s Web

SCCT’s adaption of Charlotte’s Web directed by Connor Vetter and adapted by Joseph Robinette, is based on the children’s classic book by E.B. White. I remember reading the book three or four times in elementary school, because, well, I guess I resonated with a nervous, anxiety-riddled piglet. This was my first time seeing it performed and it is such a great show for all ages. This is especially true if you have a kid who’s a first-timer at a play. We both were laughing at all the hilarious characters, who each had impeccable comedic timing and really embodied their character.

If you have never read the book (which is honestly hard for me to believe) then you need to know that the story follows a pig named Wilbur (played by Vi Hix), and a weaving Spider named Charlotte (played by Jenn Januchowski), who lives in the corner of the barn and tirelessly works to save Wilbur’s butt from becoming bacon. A trio of narrators guide the story along, while a collection of hilarious barn animals and loving humans help Wilbur along the way.

Vi Hix was hilarious, and they illuminated the stage as the naive and sweet little pig Wilbur. They were literally rolling around on the stage, running through the theatre, and had the entire audience giggling. All of the actors poured their all into this production, and you could tell by how well they worked together to make the production flow seamlessly.

Charlotte’s Web is held on the Bell Stage, so that means a spectacular set design!  The web that Charlotte has spun is a huge part of the set design, taking up almost ⅓ of the stage. My daughter was mesmerized watching Charlotte move gracefully across her web, holstered in and floating!

As the production came to an end, the entire cast assembled at center stage in song, and I was holding back tears thinking of how beautiful the message of Charlotte’s Web truly is. A message of love, kindness, and the joy of life, and how important it is to embrace it. But also the deeper meaning of how important words are and how they can impact our perception, something I regularly talk to my kids about.

Daughter and I at Charlotte's Web at the South Carolina Children's Theatre

Upcoming Show Dates for Charlotte’s Web

Charlotte’s Web runs from September 22, 2023- October 8th, 2023. All shows are Saturday and Sunday (with the exception of opening night). All of these shows have morning and mid-afternoon viewings available.

2023 – 2024 South Carolina Children’s Theatre Season

The South Carolina Children’s Theatre has an outstanding lineup for the 2023- 2024 season! Performances take place on either the Bell Stage or the Younts Stage.
