Get Tickets Now! Head to the North Pole on the 2025 Polar Express in Spencer, NC

Posted on | 2 Comments

Have you ridden the Polar Express in Spencer, NC? The North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, North Carolina, is home to an impressive collection of trains, automobiles, aviation, and other transportation equipment representing over 100 years of transportation history.  But every year as Christmas approaches, the North Carolina Transportation Museum transforms into a popular stop for the famous Polar Express. Climb aboard for a magical ride to the North Pole!

The Polar Express in Spencer, North Carolina

Looking for more day holiday day trips? We have them on our Guide to Holiday Day Trips Near the Upstate.

The Polar Express: Spencer, NC

The trip my family took to the North Carolina Transportation Museum for this event is fondly remembered by my children.  We are talking about a highlight of Christmas memories, the top ten favorite adventures ever, easy.

If you are familiar with the famous movie and book, you really feel like you have stepped straight into the screen and deep into the pages of the Christmas favorite. Waiting passengers can hear the train approach, and then the iconic “All Aboard!” is heard as the conductor, lantern in hand, leans out of the train. The opening scene between the boy in the pajamas and the conductor is acted out for all to see, and as the boy decides to come aboard, the waiting passengers are invited to follow.

Want to check out another Polar Express train ride? There’s one in Bryson City, NC, too! And, we have a story on even more Holiday Trains to ride.

What to Expect During Your Trip

While there are a lot of guests on each ride of the Polar Express train ride, the getting in line and onboarding process is very easy. There are clearly marked signs for each car and groups of rows. It is simple and somehow they are able to move a large number of people, without making passengers feel like they standing right in the middle of a herd of cattle.

Once onboard the magic continues as passengers are treated to song and dance with hot chocolate and cookies. My family sprang for the First Class seats with the table. This included souvenir mugs and extra treats. It was nice and convenient to have the tables to set our drinks and snacks on. I appreciated the less crowded environment of this section, too. Don’t forget to keep your ticket handy! The conductor will be by to punch it, of course.

Arriving at the North Pole

Once the train arrives at the North Pole, passengers disembark and watch Santa give the first gift of Christmas to the boy in the pajamas. All the children from the movie are present, along with the elves. The “North Pole” is set at the museum’s 37-bay roundhouse built in 1924, with the museum’s other buildings standing tall behind. It is decorated for Christmas, and fodder for little imagination to envision Santa’s workshops and a village full of elves.

Back on board, children and adults get a chance to visit with Santa and receive their very own sleigh bell. During the rest of the ride, the Polar Express book is read and on our ride, there was even a little time left to sing Christmas carols.

The fun wasn’t over when the ride ended, either. The museum sets up with crafts, campfires, smores (available for purchase), model trains, and of course pictures with Santa. The gift shop is also pretty impressive.

Spend the Day at the North Carolina Transportation Museum

The North Carolina Transportation Museum is a destination in and of itself. The buildings the museum occupies have a transportation history of their own, including an 1898 train depot, a 37-bay roundhouse built in 1924, and a Back Shop built-in 1905 for overhauling steam locomotives.

Those buildings are packed full of historically significant automobiles, aviation exhibits, steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, and so much more. While we loved looking at the old cars, we all found the 1924 roundhouse and the 40 restored locomotives it houses to be quite impressive and fun. Rides are available on the turntable as well, though we did not purchase one of those.

Admission to the museum is separate from the Polar Express tickets, and the museum closes prior to the Polar Express arrival each night. Plan to eat dinner in downtown Spencer or bring a picnic. There are not many local restaurant options. I recommend hopping online and checking out your options in advance so that if there’s nothing to your liking you can plan to bring your dinner.

The museum grounds are large and there are plenty of places to settle in and enjoy a picnic while you wait for your ride on the Polar Express.  Additionally, there are some train cars outside the museum that children can explore during this time. The museum also had several campfires with smores kits available for purchase right next to the spot where you will hop on the Polar Express, as well as hula hoops, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, and other items that will help keep the little ones occupied while they wait.

Train stationed at the North Carolina Transportation Museum

2025 Polar Express: Spencer, NC North Carolina Transportation Museum Details:

Prices begin at $40.25 for children and $46.75 for adults. If you have a group, purchase as soon as possible for the cheapest optinos. Check the Polar Express website for available dates and times. Trains sell out fast. If you want to go, don’t wait to get your tickets!

Improve Your Bike Skills at Gateway Park: Travelers Rest, SC

Posted on |

Inside: Find information on how to get there, biking options, and other park activities.

Have you visited Gateway Park in Travelers Rest, SC? This park along the Swamp Rabbit Trail is full of outdoor things to do, including an impressive bike park where you can practice jumps, ride the pump track, and older bikers can conquer the skills down two different jump lines. Here’s all the information you need to take advantage of Gateway Park on your next visit to TR.

Bike skills park at Gateway Park in Travelers Rest

About Gateway Park in Travelers Rest

Gateway Park is located along the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Downtown Travelers Rest, right behind Sunrift Adventures.

Biking is a big draw to Gateway Park, but there are also other things to do. There is a small playground in the shade, plus tennis courts, a football field, and a basketball court. Restrooms are centrally located in the middle of the park. And, there are a number of picnic tables and even charcoal grills located throughout the park.

Playground at Gateway Park

Getting to Gateway Park

There are two entrances to Gateway Park, but if you’re not looking for them, you might miss them. The first entrance, and the one that GPS will probably take you to, is right behind Sunrift Adventures. You will actually turn into the Sunrift parking lot and then veer to the right into the Gateway Park parking lot. At this end of the park you’ll find the basketball court and field.

If you continue driving through the park, you’ll pass the restrooms on the left, the playground on the right, and then you’ll arrive at the bike skills park.

There is another entrance/exit here at the bike park onto Henderson Drive. Turning left here will bring you back up towards Main Street, Travelers Rest.

Skills park at Gateway Park, Travelers Rest, SC

Biking at Gateway Park

There’s something for every level of biker at Gateway Park. While my older kids and husband spend most of their time at the park on the skills in the jump lines, the park also offers a pump track, several platforms at varying heights for drop jumps, and 2 1/2 miles of mountain biking trails through the woods and around the park.

Kids track at Gateway Park

There’s also a small figure 8 track for kids beside the playground.

Jump Lines

Bikers using the jump lines start at the platform in the corner of the bike park. Skills in the jump lines include gap jumps, steep table tops, and a variety of berms. Here you’ll find a helpful map of the trails and maybe a friendly biker or two to give you some pointers. If you’ve never tried these types of jumps, a good way to start is by rolling over the jumps on the trail slowly, rather than jumping. It’s always a good idea to take new trails slowly, anyway.

Drop Jumps and Pump Track

Pump track

Across the road from the jump lines, you’ll see the small pump track and the drop jumps. The pump track would be a cool place for younger riders to try some skills. There are no jumps on this track only bumps and turns.

Beside the pump track is an area for bikers to practice drop jumps off of platforms. There is a variety of heights to choose from; entry and exit of these jumps is a grassy field- no trails. When bikers are present, you’ll want to keep an eye on the kiddos here.

Bike Drops at Gateway Park

Ride the trails

In addition to the skills portion of the bike park, there is also a trail through the woods and around the park. There are about 2 1/2 miles of mountain bike trail.

dirt bike trail at Gateway Park

Got a flat?

When we arrived at the park most recently, my husband pulled his bike out of the van, only to realize the tire was flat and he didn’t have the adaptor he needed to pump it up. He brought the bike over to Sunrift Adventures, located right beside the park, and they pumped it up for free. He was also able to buy the missing adaptor so he’d have it for next time for just $1. Sunrift is a great resource in the area for biking and all kinds of outdoor adventures.

Watch: Ride the trails at Gateway Park

More to Love at Gateway Park

This park used to be the site of Travelers Rest High School. So, if you are not in the mood for biking, grab a football and play on the football field that has been used to train athletes for decades. You can also enjoy the basketball court or baseball diamond.

If you are 5 or 95, you will find something at this park to get your heart pumping while soaking in some vitamin D. Bring some friends, and get out to Gateway Park.

Top 10 Cozy & Cute Coffee Shops: Hendersonville, NC

Posted on |

So, you’re ready to sit back and enjoy the perfect cup of coffee? Hendersonville, NC has a lot of fabulous coffee options, which means you really can’t go wrong. But, having tried quite a few of the coffee shops in Hendersonville, NC, here’s a rundown of some of our favorites and a few other unique spots you might want to check out the next time you’re looking for coffee in Hendersonville, NC.

Hendersonville, NC is a Great Place to Be for Coffee

I spend a lot of time in Hendersonville, NC, particularly in coffee shops. One of my kids volunteers at Team Ecco Aquarium, so pretty much every weekend I head to Hendersonville with my laptop packed up and ready to get some work done. After I drop him off at the aquarium, I pick a coffee shop and settle in to catch up on some work. It’s safe to say I’ve seen lots of coffee shops in Hendersonville, inside and out.

My current favorite is Southern Streams. Shhh…don’t tell any of these other amazing Hendersonville NC Coffee Shops!

Black Bear Coffee

Located beside the Hands On! Children’s Museum on Main Street, Black Bear Coffee is a popular option for both locals and parents visiting the museum. They serve Counter Culture coffee, and you can purchase coffee beans here as well.

In addition to coffee drinks, they have a menu with breakfast options and sandwiches, soups, and salads, as well as cookies and pastries. Some of the pastries are especially kid-friendly, like the homemade strawberry pop tart with sprinkles.

My personal favorite lunch item is the Greek salad, while my daughter’s favorite item on the menu is the soft pretzel.

Lots of seating is available indoors and outdoors.

Art & Coffee Bar

Also in the Main Street area, just a block off Main Street on 5th Avenue is the Art & Coffee Bar. This Hendersonville coffee shop is one of the smaller options, with cozy seating and lots of artwork to enjoy on display. If you’re looking for a quiet, calm option, this is the coffee shop to try! They have all the favorite coffee and espresso beverages, plus homemade pastries.

Southern Streams Coffeehouse

I discovered this coffee shop on my way up to Jump Off Rock. It’s amazing, gorgeous inside and out, with coffee, tea, espresso beverages, and homemade pastries. They also have breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, and salads.

There’s a plethora of indoor seating with tables and comfy options upstairs as well as in the downstairs backroom. That room has a big rolling garage door-style door that opens to the outside. Or if you’d rather enjoy some sunshine, the great big back deck is the place you’ll want to find a seat.

Sometimes on Saturdays, you’ll find live music at Southern Streams Coffeehouse.

Parking is free and there’s plenty of it!

Southern Streams Coffeehouse is located at the former location of Appalachian Coffee Company.

Hendough

This one isn’t 100% a coffee shop. But, they do serve coffee, good coffee. Plus they have all the coffee shop favorites: hot chocolate and espresso beverages. And of course, they serve the famous Hendough donuts, breakfast sandwiches, and chicken. This is the original Hendough location with both indoor and outdoor seating. Don’t forget to check upstairs if you’re looking for indoor seating!

Ecusta Market & Cafe

Located behind the trailside brewery this coffee shop and market sits along the Ecusta Trail. Serving everything from your favorite coffee to local pastries. We especially enjoyed their tallow fries served with their lunch menu.

877 Lennox Park Drive Hendersonville
Ecusta Cafe & Market

Sharewell Coffee Co.

Technically this coffee shop is in Flat Rock, but it’s pretty much right on the border between Hendersonville and Flat Rock. They are a roastery and espresso bar, serving espresso beverages, pour-overs, local teas, and local pastries.

2698c Greenville Highway, Flat Rock
Sharewell Coffee Co.

The Local Brew

We checked out Local Brew just recently. The shop is very cozy, with all your favorite espresso and coffee beverages plus pastries. Take your coffee to go or snag one of a couple of indoor tables. There is also outdoor seating available both out front and outback. The back seating is adjacent to a tiny stream, though the deck area is quite rustic.

The Local Brew
1800 Four Seasons Blvd, Hendersonville

Jeter Mountain Farm

Hear me out on this one. Coffee tastes better on a farm with beautiful views. Although the coffee at Jeter Mountain would be good all on its own minus the views. You’ll have to make sure they are open, as the coffee house is only open when the rest of the farm is open, seasonally June through October.

But, right beside the coffee house is the kids’ indoor play area. That’s a pretty great combination if you ask us!

We have a whole review of Jeter Mountain Farm where you can find out more about what the farm has, in addition to coffee!

Read on to find out all the details to plan your visit to the Apple Valley Model RR Club.

Railroad scene at Apple Valley Model Club, Apple Valley Model RR Club

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I planned a stop on our day in Hendersonville, NC at the Apple Valley Model RR Club. But, I figured with free admission and several kids who enjoy model trains, it was worth a stop.

Wow, was it worth the stop! The station is full of some of the coolest displays we’ve seen. How rare it is to find something like with without an admission cost! We loved our time watching the trains and look forward to stopping by again.

Take a Peek!

Here’s a fun video from our visit so you can see some of the trains at the Apple Valley Model Railroad Club.

Things to See at the Apple Valley Model RR Club

The model train displays at the Apple Valley Model RR Club flow through the several rooms that make up the historic train station. In one room you can watch club members work on trains and scenery and beyond that are rooms full of elaborate scenery, tunnels, and HO scale model trains.

Tunnels in a model railroad display

The station is filled with the sounds of running trains chugging and whistling across the displays. Train lovers young and old can watch as the trains go by, and meander from room to room to check out the different displays. Take as much time as you’d like, it’s free and there is a lot to see!

Huge model train displays

Outdoor Train Display at Apple Valley

A G-scale model train runs outdoors behind the station and there are some very special features of this outdoor display. First, young ones should head here to visit both Thomas the Train and Percy. They both chug through the large outdoor display.

G-scale outdoor train display with Thomas

Next, notice the mirrors along the back of the display. You’ll be able to watch the trains moving behind the display on their way to the other side.

But the biggest special feature is the onboard camera running on one of the outdoor trains. You can see this onboard view from the lobby. My kids enjoyed positioning themselves outdoors to be seen on the camera while their siblings watched for them in the lobby.

Climb Aboard the Caboose

Beside the train station is an old caboose. When the station is open, the caboose is also open. Climb aboard and check out the interior with its coal stove and storage, benches, and even a toilet.

Fall Play & Pumpkins at Linda’s Plants & Shrubs: Hendersonville, NC

Posted on |

Does an indoor pumpkin farm maze and play space sound like fun for the kids? Bring the little ones to Linda’s Plants & Shrubs in Hendersonville for their super cool hay bale, indoor, Pumpkin Maze. They also pick your own pumpkins and sunflowers. And, while you’re there you can pick up some super gorgeous pumpkins, mums, and fall plants.

Fall Things to Do at Linda’s Plants & Shrubs

What does Linda’s have for Fall 2025? Lots! Find a pumpkin. Wander through the sunflower field, you can pick your own, too! Enjoy the pretty view and then head indoors and feast your eyes on gorgeous pumpkin displays with mums and all kinds of fall plants. Then head for the INDOOR pumpkin maze.

Pick your own pumpkins at lindas

Picking Pumpkins

Linda’s Plants and Shrubs shop is full of gorgeous pumpkins in every size, color, and shape you could imagine. They have lots of fall-themed photo opportunities both inside and out. (These photos are from 2023, so expect the photo opportunity options to be slightly different, but just as fun.)

The Pumpkin Maze

Linda’s pumpkin maze costs $5 per person. That includes going through the maze and using the play space. Do the maze as many times as you want. The maze, made out of hay bales, is loaded up with Halloween and fall characters with audio and lights, inflatables, and bubbles.

Fall maze

Crawl through tunnels and tires. Once you make your way out of the maze, a slide into a pool full of dried corn is waiting at the beginning of the play area.

In the play area you’ll find construction trucks ready to drive through and move that dried corn, an additional pool of dried corn, and space to play.

Do the maze as many times as you’d like. We saw kids having a great time with a game of hide and seek in the maze, and we have to admit, it does seem like a pretty perfect place for hide and seek! You could also have an epic game of I Spy in here.

There are benches in the maze space so parents can chill while the kids play.

End of the maze at Linda's

Plants and More

Linda’s is personally one of my favorite places to go for fueling my plant addiction. They have a large selection of both seasonal indoor and outdoor plants, plus local honey, sauces, pots, and a small selection of decor items.

Christmas Events at Linda’s (2025 Offerings TBA)

Linda’s Plants and Shrubs is always a fun place to explore. Here’s what they had in previous years. Check back soon for their 2025 holiday happenings.

The Christmas Maze at Linda’s in Hendersonville, NC

Greenhouses are not just for growing plants. Linda’s Plants and Shrubs has converted one of its large greenhouse spaces into a Christmas maze and play area for kids. No matter the weather, it’s dry and toasty at this maze made of haybales and decorated with tons of holiday decorations and inflatables. Kids must wind through the maze and crawl through a tunnel and a tire on their way to a climber and slide that goes right into a pit of dried corn.

For the construction-minded and truck-loving kiddos, there is also a place to play in the corn with large provided dump trucks. Parents can play along in the maze or relax on the benches while the kids play.

Play space in the Christmas Maze at Linda's

Younger kids, toddlers, preschoolers, and younger elementary will especially enjoy this area.

Trees and Plants: Holidays

When you walk into Linda’s the first thing you’ll experience is the fresh, piney smell of Christmas trees and wreaths. Smells are free, too, and totally worth a pause even if you don’t need a tree. But if you do, these trees were beautiful!

Next on the list, Christmas cacti. Linda’s has so many blooming Christmas cacti and other holiday plants, like Poinsettias. I love Christmas cacti and I have five or six in my house. I’m lucky to get even one to bloom. So, today I added another, a big beautiful, already fully in bloom Christmas cactus to enjoy right now. Yay!

Christmas Cactus at Linda's

The poinsettia table screamed Christmas in the best possible way, and my husband picked out some other blooming holiday plant that I have absolutely no idea what it is or what to do with it. But, you know, it’s pretty. And, you can never have enough pretty plants, really. Then, my kids found a few succulents to add to their collections, of course.
