Great Harvest Bread

My all-time favorite Great Harvest Bread is the blueberry cream cheese bread. It’s basically a dessert breakfast disguised as a slice of bread. But I’m ok with that. In addition to their delicious specialty breads, though, Great Harvest Bread also offers sourdough loaves, various whole wheat loaves and a lot more.

Great Harvest Bread is also where I got my sourdough starter. That means you can make your own sourdough bread at home. Just give them a call to see if they have some sourdough starter to share.

Your Child Can Play in Band, Strings and So Much More at Lawson Academy of the Arts

Posted on |

Do you know about Lawson Academy of the Arts at Converse University? The academy is an amazing resource for music education and the performing arts in the Upstate, South Carolina community. At Lawson, your children can take private lessons and group lessons for a variety of instruments. But the thing that makes this music teacher and homeschooling mama’s heart sing, is the music ensemble opportunities they offer.

Our family has been a part of Lawson Band for several years, and I want to make sure every Upstate family knows about the amazing opportunities at Lawson.

This is 100% a review from a thankful mom. Lawson Academy is not a Kidding Around sponsor, and nothing was given in exchange for this review.

Lawson Academy

What Does Lawson Academy Offer?

Lawson Academy at Converse University offers music and performing arts opportunities for Upstate students, including:

  • Private lessons on wind, brass, and string instruments
  • Group guitar lessons
  • Vocal study, private lessons and group study
  • Strings ensemble
  • 3 levels of Band
  • Piano
  • Fine Arts Day Camp
  • Private ballet lessons

The Importance of Music Ensembles for Young Musicians

As a music teacher with 15 years of teaching experience, including both private instruction and ensemble teaching, I wanted to make sure my homeschooled kids have the opportunity to play their instruments with other musicians in an ensemble.

A complete music education includes ensemble playing. Why are private lessons not enough? Because music is social, and it’s more fun with others! Playing in an ensemble requires a completely different skill set than playing alone. Students have to learn to follow a conductor and listen to each other in order to play together. They develop an ear for intonation and pitch matching that cannot be done alone. They develop humility, learn to encourage, and grow their ability to work with others. Very, very little musical literature was written for a solo instrument with no accompaniment. All the parts are needed to hear and play the music the way it was written.

And, I have to say, there is something completely out of this world about playing in an ensemble enveloped in layers of sound all blending together to create something beautiful, knowing that your sound is mixing in and part of that creation. All musicians, of all levels, can experience that. And, in my opinion, they really should. Students can start developing ensemble skills from day one of playing an instrument.

Please, don’t overlook this part of a well-rounded music education.

Lawson Band

I’m a band mom. I am a private violin teacher and a former school orchestra teacher, but the hat I wear for this article is band mom. This is the bulk of our experience at Lawson, and so I’ll focus my review on band. However, I’ll say upfront that based on what I have seen of Lawson, I would not hesitate to participate in any of their programs.

My son has been playing trumpet in Lawson Band for the last four years. He’s played in all three levels of band offered at Lawson: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. From the very beginning, I have been hugely impressed with the instruction they offer, their flexibility, and the creativity of instrumentation in ensembles year after year. All this points to flat out giving each and every student the best possible experience they can, always.

In addition to the Lawson Band ensemble, my son has been able to participate in other opportunities because of his involvement with Lawson, including auditioning for region bands and participating in the honor band clinic at Limestone University. These experiences are possible because of the fabulous dedication of the teachers at Lawson. Opportunities like these are only available to students of members of the South Carolina Band Directors Association. And so, Lawson is opening doors for homeschool students who would not otherwise be able to participate in these other experiences.

I cannot say enough how thankful I am for these opportunities for my son. Lawson Band is hands down, no reservation, a true gem of music education in our community.

Who Can Join Lawson Band?

Lawson Band is open to any student in grades 3 through 12. The beginning band, as the name implies, starts at the very beginning; how to open the case, put the instrument together, and get sound out. Your child doesn’t need any prior experience. After a year, students move up to the intermediate group, and from there move to the advanced group based on skill.

If your child already plays an instrument, Lawson will place them in the ensemble where they can be most successful. My son entered band halfway through the year and jumped in with the beginner ensemble for the spring semester. The following year he moved up with his bandmates to the intermediate group.

Interested in the Opportunities at Lawson?

The place to start is the Lawson Academy of the Arts website. Parents can see the wide variety of offerings available for their students at Lawson and register for fall semester classes.

If you have younger children or are interested in strings or vocal ensembles, check out the website for age requirements and information about the programs.

You can also register by calling 864-596-9022.

The Willow Whole Health Market: Organic Groceries & Cozy Coffee in One Stop

Posted on |

If you’ve ever wished for a grocery stop that felt more like visiting a neighbor than tackling a big box store, Willow Whole Health Market & Coffee Shop might be just what you’re looking for. This little shop on Locust Hill Road, tucked next to Sushi Shack in the Taylors/Greer area, offers a slower, friendlier kind of shopping — and a cozy place to sip a warm drink, too.

We stopped by recently and loved the experience.

The Willow Whole Foods Health Market

Quick Summary: The Willow

Willow Whole Health Market & Coffee Shop
📍 Locust Hill Road, Taylors/Greer (next to Sushi Shack)
🛒 Organic groceries, local milk, eggs, and meats
☕ Organic Coffee and tea with dietary-conscious options
🪑 Cozy indoor seating in the back of the shop

A Tiny Market Full of Local Finds

Willow is a small shop, but every shelf is full of something fabulous. During our visit, we noticed a steady stream of regulars popping in — many heading straight for the fridge stocked with local milk, butter, and Happy Cow dairy. A few were greeted by name. It’s that kind of place.

In addition to the usual healthy staples — natural pantry goods — we found:

  • Local eggs and sourdough bread
  • Southern Oaks butter (so good!)
  • Frozen local meats
  • Jams, pickles, and grits made nearby

The market also caters to folks with food sensitivities, offering gluten-free, sugar-free, and dairy-free options throughout the store.

The space is small but bright, and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. They answered questions, gave us tips on favorite products, and were genuinely kind — no big-store rush or pressure.

I left the shop with a loaf of local sourdough and some fresh butter from Southern Oaks dairy. Let me tell you, add a local egg, and that’s 100% a championship breakfast kind of thing right there. I’m layering on that butter like it’s cream cheese. So good.

A Quiet Spot to Sip and Stay Awhile

Toward the back of the market, you’ll find a warm little seating area and an organic coffee counter offering lattes, teas, and bakery treats. It’s relaxed and unpretentious — the kind of place you could bring your laptop or a friend and settle in.

One of us ordered a gingerbread cookie latte made with oat milk, and it hit the spot — not too sweet, with a cozy spice flavor. We also shared a cinnamon roll (definitely worth it). The coffee menu includes options for different dietary needs, and it felt good to enjoy something that didn’t come from a chain.

The back seating area has soft chairs and a laid-back vibe, perfect for quietly getting things done or just enjoying a peaceful pause in your day.

We spent about 2 hours getting some Kidding Around teamwork accomplished, and we enjoyed our time so much that we knew we had to share this spot with you! (See, we’re always looking out for our readers!)

We’ll be back: The Willow Whole Health Market

The Willow

Willow isn’t flashy, and that’s kind of the point. It’s small, friendly, and focused on real, good-for-you food — the kind that supports local farmers and leaves you feeling taken care of.

Whether you’re picking up a jug of raw milk, browsing for a thoughtful food gift, or just stopping in for a quiet cup of coffee, Willow Whole Health Market & Coffee Shop is a sweet little stop worth knowing about.

Bridgeway Brewing

About BridgeWay Brewing Co.

Located in beautiful Bridgeway Station, BridgeWay Brewing Co. offers families and friends a place to hang out, relax, and have fun together. If that’s not your thing, they also offer wine and other adult beverages.

Sights & Sounds: A Video Review

Take a peek at what you’ll find at Bridgeway Brewing.

BridgeWay Brewing Co. Menu

Let’s talk food, becuase it was delicious. There’s a full menu with appetizers, wings, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and lots more. We tried several items and they were all fabulous, especially the nachos. These were not your average nachos with a little cheese and a few toppings. They were loaded with toppings, rich and full of flavor, not to mention one of the biggest plates of nachos I’ve seen in a long, long time.

We also enjoyed a fried chicken sandwich and a bacon jam burger, both of which were perfectly cooked. My chicken was crunchy on the outside, and juicy on the inside, with just the right amount of sauce and toppings, as all excellent friend chicken sandwiches should be. Both came with fries that were nice and crispy.

Beer at BridgeWay Brewing

Beer and drinks at Bridgeway

I am a fan of darker beer, so I picked the seasonal Winter Warmer at BridgeWay. I really enjoyed the holiday flavors, and the beer was not overly heavy, so I had plenty of room to enjoy my meal. My husband enjoyed a glass of prosecco instead of a beer.

The bar at BridgeWay is unique in that addition to the house-made beer, they offer wine, prosecco, and a full bar of spirits and craft cocktails. So no matter your preference, you’ll find something excellent that you’ll enjoy. Their taps have their beer made in-house, and in the future will also have ciders and a few other options of brews they aren’t currently able to make, like sours.

Duckpin Bowling

Just what is duck-pin bowling? It’s kind of like a miniature version of bowling. Think of a shorter lane, a much smaller ball you can hold in one hand, and every pin is connected to the alley by a string. The mechanisms in the game raise and lower each pin by its string.

You don’t need bowling shoes, you don’t need bumpers, and most importantly, you don’t need to be good at bowling to enjoy this one. I am not a good bowler, and I beat my husband in duckpin bowling. Ok? It was icing on the cake right there.

Duck pin bowling at Bridgeway Station

What ages will enjoy duckpin bowling at BridgeWay?

Ball control is the key here. So anyone who can roll a ball roughly down the center of a lane, avoiding gutters, can enjoy duckpin bowling. This is probably not the best activity for the very youngest of kiddos, as these lanes aren’t meant for hard-core toddler ball lobbing and thunking. So, we’d recommend this family activity for about ages 5 and up.

Bowling: How to get a lane

There are 4 duckpin bowling lanes at BridgeWay Brewing Co. You can make a reservation online, at a cost of $40 per hour or $20/half hour rental of the lane (prices may vary by time/date). You can also reserve by calling. The lane fits up to 4 people, and theirs a cozy booth with a table at the front of the lane. So, you can rent your lane, order your food and beverages, and play! Once your food comes, you can enjoy it while you take turns at the lane.

Of course, if your group is larger, you could additional lanes. The tables and lanes are side by side.

The Future of BridgeWay Brewing Co. at Bridgeway Station

Speaking of the future, BridgeWay Brewing also plans to offer birthday parties and other private parties. Located right at the front of Bridgeway Station, the brewery has a huge and gorgeous outdoor space that will be totally perfect as the weather warms up. We also noticed there were some heaters in the space, so, you likely won’t have to wait long to enjoy that area.

If you haven’t visited Bridgeway Station, it has a very upscale European feel with lots of pretty brickwork and even a waterfall into a little decorative pool. Right now, it’s all lit up with beautiful Christmas Trees and Christmas lights. So if you’re looking for a lowkey Christmas outing with the kids, go grab yourself a bowling lane, get some delicious food and drinks, and then go walk through the pretty lights.

Croft State Park: The Perfect Park for an Outdoor Adventure Near Spartanburg, SC

Posted on |

Have you visited Croft State Park? With a wooden dock, a clear lake, tiny minnows sparkling in sunny shallow waters, tall trees, horses, hiking trails, and a playground, it sounds like the perfect place, right?  The next time you’re looking for a family adventure, check out Croft State Park!

Croft State Park in Spartanburg, South Carolina

Spend a Day at Croft State Park

This gorgeous 7,000-acre state park offers miles of hiking, biking, and even equestrian trails. On our visit, we walked the short Lake Craig connector trail and then enjoyed views of an absolutely beautiful Lake Craig. We enjoyed snacks on an adorable little dock and watched tiny minnows in the shallow water around us. Nearby fishermen were also quite entertaining for my crew.

We enjoyed a very peaceful morning in the park. My homeschoolers were able to practice making super sentences with quality adjectives about all the things they were noticing from the dock. “The sun sparkles on the backs of the wiggling minnows.” The next time we go, I’ll bring sketchbooks and writing paper so they can write down their sentences and illustrate. There were definitely plenty of places to sit near the lake, and lots of grass for blankets, if that’s your preference.

You will find bathrooms conveniently near the parking lot for Lake Craig. A short walk up the hill brings you to a nice playground with views of the park’s equestrian facilities. While there were only a handful of horses and riders when we visited, my children really enjoyed watching them as we walked past. The playground was great for my children (ages 4-8), but younger children need careful watching due to the height of some equipment.

Croft State Park Lake Craig

Things to Do at Croft State Park

Hiking

There are several trails at Croft, including an easy Nature Trail that’s about one-and-a-half miles. A few of the major trails are Palmetto Trail (Croft Passage), Nature Trail, Foster Mill, Southside Loop, and Rocky Ridge/ Whitestone Springs. You’ll also find several additional mixed-use trails that are designated for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. This park has over 20 miles of mountain biking trails, which is spectacular if you love the sport.

We love taking a small portion of the Palmetto Trail to Fairforest Creek in the summer. It’s not too difficult, so our toddler and four-year-old can come along. It also leads out to the creek, which is a great place to splash in the creek on hot days.

Camping

Camping at Croft should be on your radar for places to go next time you’re ready to pack up and head to the Great Outdoors. The park offers both RV camping and tent camping sites, in addition to a primitive group camping site that can accommodate up to 100 people. Camping sites are on packed gravel and come with electrical and water hookups. There are even hot showers, which as a mom with messy kids, makes taking them camping a little easier.

Canoe, Kayak, and Paddleboard Rentals

One of the great places to do watersports in the area is at Croft. You can bring your own equipment, or you can rent canoes, small boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards from the park itself.

For Jon boat and canoe rentals, you pay $15 for four hours or $25 per day. For kayaks and paddleboards, the cost is $10-$15 per hour for the rental. They do not rent after 6 pm, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.
