What to Expect When Volunteering at Meals on Wheels: Greenville, SC

Posted on |

Local mom Tina Mackey went on a Meals On Wheels in Greenville, SC trip with her kids so that she could share with us her experience.

Ya’ll, have you ever thought about something for a long time (I mean years). And you have in your mind how it should go? That’s how it was for me with Meals on Wheels. This has been something I’ve wanted to do for years. I had preconceived notions about time commitment, how it would work taking children, how often I would have to commit to driving, and much more. Let me tell you how Meals on Wheels is not at all what I expected it to be.

For more ideas on how to give back, see our list of ways to volunteer with kids in Greenville.

How volunteering with Meals On Wheels went for my family

First, let me say that our experience with Meals on Wheels was far better than anything I ever thought it would be. This is one of those times that I ended up saying, “why haven’t we done this sooner?” We began by going to orientation and learning about the organization. Being briefed on how things worked made us confident that we could really do this. Orientation is now virtual, and you can attend a virtual orientation session on Thursdays at 9:30 am.

Next, we picked up our food. The food packages are pretty straight-forward. They have special trays for certain dietetic restrictions, but other than that it was pretty simple. All food is cooked and packaged at their site just off of Oregon Street near August Street in Greenville. If you want to be assigned a route further out of town, you have the option of picking up your food from a drop off site closer to your location.

Last, we drove to our locations. The papers that they give you detail everything. It gives you directions to your first house along with the house description and specific directions on where and how to drop the food.  (Food is never to be left alone on a porch). Then, you follow the directions to your next house. Even if you don’t have GPS, you can do this just by following their written instructions. We were finished with our route in exactly 1 1/2 hours.

Things To Know Before Starting Your Meals on Wheels Route

  • Orientation is now virtual and happens every Thursday at 9:30 am.
  • Food pick-up can be at the downtown location or at a food drop elsewhere.
  • Food pickup begins at 10 am.
  • Most people like to pickup at 10 am and be finished by 12 pm.
  • MoW services a very large area including places from Travelers Rest all the way down to Fountain Inn and beyond.
  • You do not have to commit to a consistent drop, but can choose on a weekly basis.
  • Time commitment is roughly 2 hours.
  • There are other ways to volunteer your time from greeting volunteers to cooking and packaging the meals.

Benefits I Didn’t Expect When Working with Meals on Wheels in Greenville

The clients were so happy to see us and genuinely thankful for us and you are welcome to visit with clients during your routes. My kids loved meeting new people and having a chance to help them. My children each took turns knocking on doors and taking the lead on talking to the clients.  I loved that they had a chance to learn assertiveness.

My son got great experience with navigation! We even saw parts of Greenville that we’ve never seen while we were driving around our route. Plus, there was lots of time in the car to talk about how we can help others.

So if you’re thinking of volunteering, but are hesitant because you’re not sure what to expect, my advice would be to go ahead and try it. They would be more than happy for you to try it once just to see how it works for your family. And from then, you can commit to a weekly route or just takes routes as they fit into your schedule.

The Greenville Zoo is of course also educational. With special events and classes happening depending on the season and general biology all around, you can learn quite a bit. Their Zoo Tots class is particularly popular for little ones to explore the zoo in a unique way. The Greenville Zoo has several educational classes for various age ranges.

While at the zoo, you can read all the signs and discuss why this animal happens to do this thing or that. Why are certain animals found in some places but nowhere else? Then play on both the playground inside the gates as well as Cleveland Park’s playground outside the entrance. Be sure to discuss the physics of movement and bodily anatomy that allows for all that running around.

Clemson University

A fabulous place to visit is the Clemson University SC Botanical Gardens with the Bob Campbell Geology Museum– we’ve previously discussed all the stuff you can do around campus. So of course for a science article, we had to include the botanical garden and geology museum. The Botanical Gardens look very fun for kids and include a children’s garden, while the geology museum is mesmerizing. The two are also right together so double the learning for half the effort!

Viva chicken

Tropical Grille

This place was the one that readers recommended the most. They have a family meal for either four or eight people that is really awesome. I personally love Tropical Grille, which is a Cuban fast-food restaurant with a healthy twist. Their perfectly seasoned chicken and pork pair well with rice and steamed vegetables – and don’t forget their sauces, which are all amazing and delicious. A few readers even said that the family meals give them leftovers (yay!). No need to call ahead. Because of the suggestions of our readers, I did my own “research” and tried this out one night and did not disappoint – I had leftovers for the next day.

You can walk in and order these but they suggest calling ahead of you want the pork instead of chicken. See their website for locations.

Tropical Grill

Taziki’s

This place serves up healthy, Mediterranean cuisine that is fast and affordable. Everyone in the family will find something they love here. Taziki’s offers fresh take-home dinners for four people that include a Greek salad, basmati rice or roasted potatoes, and pita chips. Prices range from $49.99 up to $99.99 depending on your entrée of choice.

New York Butcher Shoppe

You can either sign up for the New York Butcher Shoppe email, which will give you the week’s menu, or call ahead. The email I got displayed mouth-watering bacon and cheddar stuffed pork chops, which came with French bread and a house salad.

Sun Belly Cafe

A haven for the vegetarians and vegans among us – and really, just those of us who love great food – is the Sun Belly Cafe in Greenville. Follow their Facebook page for their latest menu items and call or text them 24 hours ahead of when you want to pick up.

Henry’s Smokehouse

With three locations spread through Greenville and Simpsonville, Henry’s Smokehouse makes the decision to not cook a breeze. You order what you want online, including bulk items, pick a time and location for pickup, and you’re done. Super easy and very tasty.

Rocky’s Hot Chicken Shack

Rocky’s offers several family-style chicken platters and family-style sides. And of course, you can grab a gallon of tea and either pint or quart-sized dips to go along with your family meal to go.

Olive Garden

At the time of this writing, the Olive Garden on Laurens Road offers a dinner-only Family Style lasagna meal to go that serves 4-12 people and includes Lasagna Classico made with Italian sausage and pan-seared beef, their Famous House Salad, and breadsticks. The price is $58.99-$89.99 and you can order online for same-day pickup.

Fountain Foods Market

209 S. Main Street, Fountain Inn

Grab a delicious take-and-bake meal from the new @fountainfoodsmarket on Main Street in Fountain Inn. They are right in downtown Fountain Inn, and we highly recommend their take-and-bake family meals, which are made right there in-house. The variety is amazing, and you can cook them the same day or put them in the freezer for when life is just too crazy and you have no idea what to make for dinner.

We loved their Beef Stroganoff, Chicken Pot Pie, and baked Provolone wedges.

Everything You Need to Know to Treasure Hunt (AKA Geocache)in Greenville, SC

Posted on | 2 Comments

If you are interested in Geocaching, Greenville, SC and the Upstate have lots of “caches” you can treasure hunt for that are a part of the global adventure, and we have all the details on how to start!

How to Geocache in Greenville, SC

Check out our Kidding Around ® Guide to 50+ Fun, Free, and Unbelievably Cheap ($5 and below) Things to Do in Greenville, SC to find more unique and fun things to do in Greenville, SC!

Unbeknownst to many people, at any given moment there could be hundreds of small treasure chests hidden in public places around you – just waiting for you to find them! This worldwide game is called geocaching, it’s a blast to do with your kids, you can play nearly anywhere, and the best part is it’s free.

Searching for these ‘caches’ can take you from your favorite trails, to your most frequented parks, to the places you have passed a hundred times on Main Street, locating hidden objects you never knew were there! Greenville’s downtown area is home to over twenty-five caches, the Swamp Rabbit Trail has a couple dozen, and Paris Mountain is home to an infamous Bucket of Toys.

Kids looking for geocaches

What exactly is a Cache?

Caches are containers ranging in size from a tiny thimble to a paint bucket and everything in between. There are millions hidden worldwide! They might be a coffee can hidden in a tree hole, a medicine jar under a rock, or a magnetic container (such as a hide-a-key) fastened to everyday objects like handrails, bridges, benches, signs, stuck to landmarks, and the list goes on and on. Each cache has been logged into a system with its exact GPS coordinates, a unique name, a description of its size, and perhaps a clue or two if you’re lucky.

What’s inside?

Caches almost always contain a log book inside which you should sign upon finding. Larger caches may contain small cheap toys (think an army man or random beads), coins, or nature finds like acorns or interesting rocks. Occasionally you may be lucky enough to find a ‘Trackable!’

What is a Trackable?

Any object fastened with a GPS tracker. You may have a task to complete if you decide to take the Trackable. On our first hunt, my kids found a Trackable; it was a toy fixed with a tracker and a note. The note explained that the car was in a race! It had been placed in a geocache in Florida along with two other cars at the same time. The task was to take the car and place it into another geocache as far west as possible. The family which set the cars in motion was tracking them online to see which car would make it across the U.S. to the coast of California first. You could take down the code yourself and watch the car you ‘helped’ as it continued to make its way across the states. HOW COOL WAS THAT!? From that day on, my kids were hooked.

What to bring?

Bring a pen to sign the log. If you are planning on collecting any items from a cache, you must go prepared to leave something behind. The general rule is take one, leave one. So have fun with your kids picking out small items from home before you head out. Research the size of the caches you will be locating ahead of time; if the cache is tiny, there will not be anything to collect. If it is medium/large, you can generally expect to take something and leave something.

Unfortunately, not all seekers follow the rules! Prepare your kids in advance by letting them know there may be nothing to take, or the things may be undesirable. We like to leave things if size permits (even if we haven’t taken something) because it makes the finding fun.

Some of the items found in a geocache

Download A Geocaching App

The easiest way to geocache is to use an App. Some may be free, but the paid versions will be worth your while. One popular app is Geocashing®, but it does cost money ($6.99 per month). Geocaching.com is also a great resource. Almost all apps will show you all the caches around you, along with details, additional hints, geocache description, photos, and logs from people who have recently found it. I do not recommend geocaching with small kids without using a good App. Put on the compass, hand it to your tot, and let them guide you to the cache – simple! Then roll up your sleeves and search.

Tips for Getting Started Geocaching in Greenville, SC

  • Each cache is different in terms of difficulty. Some are nearly in plain sight and some are nearly too difficult to find. Check the ratings before you head out.
  • Read the past logs on the Apps before you hunt. You may find that the cache has very recently been “Muggled” i.e. stolen by a non-game playing person. You need to know this!
  • You must return the container to the exact same spot you found it.
  • Look high, low, under, behind, get creative! The Apps will get you close, but it’s up to you to seek the treasure. They can also be off. Rely more upon the clues (like the name of the cache) than the precise point the phone GPS takes you. Use your detective skills and common sense over, “But it says it’s right HERE?” It is never exactly where the App takes us, instead it’s close.
  • Caching in the city is generally MORE difficult than caching in the park or woods. It is much easier to hide an object from “Muggles” in the woods than the city. Things downtown are more of a puzzle, and often small.
  • Expect to miss sometimes. Prepare your kids for the chance of not finding it, or the toys being sad, or the log missing, etc. These things do happen! We rarely find every single cache we set out to.
  • If the geocaching goes south, there’s always ice cream!
  • When going geocaching in Greenville, SC, we have found several along Main Street, the Reedy River, throughout Greenville County, and all of them at Paris Mountain.

Cheap Birthday Party Ideas: Greenville, SC

Mini Golf Party Package at McPherson Park

McPherson Park has a free and beautiful mini-golf course. So gather a few friends, some putters, and balls, enjoy the park, and make party planning easy. And, for just $75 you can have the City of Greenville help out with their Mini Golf Party Package! The package includes 20 putters, 20 balls, scorecards, and pencils. You can reserve your package on the City of Greenville reservation website. There are also shelters to rent, or if your party is small, there is ample shade to spread some blankets for a birthday picnic or tea party.

Free mini-golf at McPherson Park in Greenville, SC

Local Parks

A popular way in the warmer months to save money on a birthday party is to rent a picnic shelter near a fun playground. The price is typically dependent on the area and the size of the pavilion, so a good way to save money is to look for small shelters at the nicer parks. Some great choices are:

Runway Park – Greenville’s Downtown Airport’s Runway Park shelter is popular due to its location right beside an active runway and its airplane-themed playground. The small shelter rents for just $90 for a two-hour rental on Fridays-Sundays to $60 for a three-hour rental on Mondays-Thursdays.

This playground is very hot and has little shade though so plan an evening party if your party is in one of the hottest months of the year, otherwise, you may find it too hot to really enjoy the play equipment.

See our review of Runway Park for more information.

Kids Planet at Century Park in Greer is also a great park to have your next affordable birthday party. They rent several picnic shelters in various sizes that are budget-friendly, all of which are located beside all the playgrounds. Your kids can play around the parks and come back for pizza and drinks at the picnic table. Shelter rental prices range from $20-$30 for small or large shelters if you are a resident of Greer, and $30-$40 for nonresidents. Rentals are for 2-hour time slots and must be reserved ahead of time.

Of course, there are many, many more picnic shelters available in town. You can find a complete list of the websites for information on these shelters in our Birthday Party Guide to Greenville.

There are also several Community Centers available for not much more than $100. One reader mentioned that the Bobby Pearse Community Center was great and even came with a kitchen and easy access to a playground.

Fire Stations

Some fire stations offer birthday parties for free, though a donation is typically requested. The best way to determine if your local fire station offers this benefit is just to call and ask. Plus, what kid doesn’t love a firefighter birthday party theme? Please note that this list is subject to change, but these local fire stations have allowed birthday parties in the past, though pricing is unknown.

Pepsi Party Pack

If you have a child turning 6, don’t forget to pick up their Pepsi Party Pack. This free special package is filled with tickets to area attractions and also includes supplies for a Pepsi Party. It’s completely free but there are only specific days that you can claim it. It comes with some simple party favors like soda, pencils, tattoos, and balloons to create the perfect birthday party at home.

Climb@Blue Ridge

KAG-Reader-recommended Climb@Blue Ridge offers parties at $12 per person with a minimum of 8 people. Bring your birthday cake or ice cream and party decor and enjoy 1 hour of climbing and 30 minutes of cake and presents at your kid’s next birthday bash!

Greenville Zoo

Though the Greenville Zoo is currently restructuring its birthday party packages, a cheaper and more informal option for a birthday is to purchase Greenville Zoo tickets. You can purchase adult tickets for $12 each, and children’s tickets for $9 each online. For a small birthday party of 5 kids and 4 adults, the total would be less than $100, and the zoo activities will make for a special day.

The adjoining Cleveland Park also has several small shelters (not the large ones right beside the big playground) available to rent for as little as $60/day or $40/half day.

Craft Stores

If you have a group of craft lovers looking for a place to create, then ReCraft Creative Reuse Center may be a good option for your kid’s birthday party. The center does not have birthday party packages specifically, but for a nominal fee of $7 per crafter, your kids can create from a collection of over 100 loose parts materials. Reservations can be made for up to 10 crafters by calling ahead of time.

Restaurants

Several fast-food restaurants offer party packages or will allow you to reserve a table and bring in a cake if you make prior arrangements for a simple birthday celebration.

Birthday Party policies and offerings vary from location to location, but Chick-fil-A is also a popular place to host a kids’ birthday. Their Taylors, SC Wade Hampton location has an indoor playground, which would be a good option for smaller parties.

SC State Park

An interesting birthday party idea for families who love the outdoors is visiting a SC State Park! You can have a huge picnic, and in the summer months play on the sandy beach at places like Paris Mountain State Park or Table Rock State Park.

Admission varies by location, but it is typically less than $20 for a family of 4. Plus, if anyone is a SC All Parks Passport holder, you can get your carload in for free! Paris Mountain State Park is a great option! It has a sandy beach, playground, large green space, easy hiking trails for kids around Lake Placid, and even volleyball. You’ll have the perfect birthday party relaxing in the sunshine and enjoying your friends and family.

Carolina Cheer

This indoor gym offers birthday parties for a gym venue rental fee + $6/child so if you have 10 kids, the cost is less than $100. Parents can bring in anything they like and Carolina Cheer provides tables, chairs, and tablecloths. They are located in Greer. *Note: We are still waiting on pricing confirmation or changes for 2024. Please contact Carolina Cheer directly for pricing.
