Express Your Inner Artist at Hearts of Clay

Posted on | No Comments

Are you looking for a place to take your family for some creative fun? Hearts of Clay, right here in Spartanburg, is the perfect place for almost any occasion. It’s more than just a pottery studio, and we’re going to tell you why our family loves spending time there!

About Hearts of Clay

For over twenty years, families have been creating memories with Hearts of Clay (Formerly Flying Saucers). In that time this family-owned business has expanded to include glass fusing, canvas painting, and more.

A trip to Hearts of Clay is the answer whether you’re looking for some family fun time, gifts for family members, a fun place to host a birthday party, or even a place to bring the kids for a parent’s night out.

Hearts of Clay Studio in Spartanburg, SC

Our family has visited so many times, I don’t even remember the first time we went. Since that first time, we have celebrated my son’s fourth birthday there, commemorated every month of my daughter’s first year of life, and enjoyed a mommy and son date night. I even eat my morning cereal out of a Hello Kitty-inspired bowl I made there.

If you feel like you aren’t artistically inclined, you shouldn’t be intimidated. The pieces available range from beginner to intricate, and there’s always someone around to help. If you mess up, the glaze can be rinsed off and you can start over. Any age can have fun painting pottery, the glaze used is non-toxic and will not stain clothes. For the more artistically inclined you have the option to use the pottery wheel to “throw” your own piece to paint. Once your item is painted, you leave it behind to be kiln-fired and it’s ready in about a week. There are also pre-fired items that can be painted with acrylic paint if coming back is not an option.

Hearts of Clay offers options for everyone

If pottery isn’t your thing, they also offer canvas painting and other classes in the studio. The classes and events cost between $5-$12, and reservations are encouraged. I’m always looking for mom’s night out activities and canvas painting and margaritas, sounds like the perfect night!

Hearts of Clay also offers Kids events. With their convenient location, it’s the perfect opportunity to have a date night or get some holiday shopping done. You won’t have to worry about the kids, they’ll be fed dinner and get to create something. Reservations are required, and the cost is $5-$12 per child.

Home school families can register for the art enrichment classes offered once a month on Thursdays during the school year. These 60-minute classes cost $12 per child.

Preschool age children receive $2 off the item they paint as part of the “5 & under club” on Wednesdays.

If your church or school is looking for a fundraiser idea, Hearts of Clay can help with that too! They’ll include everything you’ll need to make pottery of your choice. This can even be utilized as just a fun activity for a large group. And a percentage of your cost will be donated to your school, church, or organization!

There are so many reasons to visit Hearts of Clay! I encourage you to check out the event calendar and head over to make some memories.

7 Weeknight Outings for Teens to Try This School Year

Posted on | No Comments

Have a few hours after school but unsure how to spend them? Local teen Brylan put together this list of school night outings that are perfect for teens. Whether you have one night without homework or many free evenings, you’ll find an idea or two that just might be exactly what you need this school year!

Also, check out our huge list of things to do with teens and our list of gift ideas for teens!

I’m completely able to relate to the desire to get out of the house and do something, but have little to no options for reasonable activities that will have me back home and in bed so I can get a full eight hours of sleep. Believe it or not, there are indeed some fun things you can do with friends or alone on a school night.

Weeknight things to do for teens near Greenville, SC

Swing Dancing at Upstate Swing

One of my personal favorites, every Wednesday night Upstate Swing hosts a swing dancing lesson from 7 pm – 8 pm and then has a night of dancing from 8 pm – 10 pm. It’s a great way to meet more people and such a fun way to set the tone for the rest of the week! Here’s the Upstate Swing link with details.

Hit the mall

Haywood Mall closes at 9 pm, ensuring that you’ll be back at home at a reasonable time. Maybe it’s just me, but shopping helps me clear my head even if I don’t purchase anything.

Get some outdoor time at a local park

Having an hour or so of exercise in places like Cleveland Park will help you clear your mind and feel great before enduring school the next day. The Swamp Rabbit Trail runs through Cleveland Park to Downtown Greenville.

Get a part-time job

If you find yourself nearly dying of boredom on a regular basis consider applying for a part-time job around town to fill up your schedule and make some extra money! See my article on part-time jobs for teens in Greenville here.

Visit a school athletic event

Check the news for the upcoming sports events and support your school! Most school calendars include athletic games so check your school, or visit another school.

Spare Time Entertainment

This arcade/bowling alley/laser tag/escape room haven is super fun for students! Grab some friends and visit! Keep in mind that you have to book an escape room ahead of time.

Go Climbing

There are several places in Greenville where you can harness up and go indoor rock climbing. It’s a great way to get your body moving so you can get a good night’s sleep or focus on homework. Some gyms even offer high school student climb nights. Check out these indoor climbing gyms near Greenville.

Climb@Blue Ridge in Taylors, SC

While the options for school night activities are few and far between, there are some reasonable mid-week activities that will help you get your mind off school for just long enough to feel refreshed and like you have a life outside of school and homework. If you find a night of freedom, take a step back from the chaos and enjoy an evening without stress. You never know when you’ll get another one.

Dance Without Limits: 10 Years of Welcoming & Celebrating Everyone! (& Giveaway)

Thank you to Dance Without Limits for sponsoring this article.

Dance is such a wonderful activity for any child (or adult) to get involved in because it helps to build confidence and character. Plus, making friends in the class is often a bonus!

At Dance Without Limits in Greenville (& new location in Simpsonville!), all of those benefits are multiplied several times over because this studio is more than a dance studio: it is a place where any child, no matter their ability, is welcomed with open arms. This stems directly from Beth Bradley’s own family upbringing and love of dance – and is a big reason why parents bring their children to Dance Without Limits year after year. This is DWL’s 10th Anniversary! It’s the perfect time to join the DWL dance family.

Dance Without Limits 10 Year Anniversary

The 2025-26 season is Dance Without Limits’ tenth season of dance programs suitable for ages 18 months through adults. Kicking the anniversary season off on August 11th, DWL was excited to see students at their new second location in Simpsonville (680 Fairview Rd UNITS E-F Simpsonville, SC 29681)!

This fall, students are enjoying classes in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, and acrobatics. Twinkle Toes is their adorable preschool program for ages 18 months to five years old and includes the sweet KinderStars program designed for students in K5 transitioning from preschool dance to more structured classes.

DWL 2024

A program that has been at DWL for all nine seasons is the Limitless Friends program for students with disabilities. This is an important aspect of the studio’s mission and it’s because of Beth Bradley, the owner of the studio.

Who is Beth Bradley?

Beth is a pretty incredible lady. I’ve had the honor of interviewing her for my work with Kidding Around and getting to see her at awards shows in town because if there’s an award for dance studios, Dance Without Limits is going to be a contender.

But here’s why Beth decided to create a dance studio that focused on including kids of all ages and abilities: she’s the oldest of 18 kids. Fifteen of her siblings are adopted. And her parents specifically adopted children that often had some kind of limitations in their life.

“My parents felt called to adopt children that were a little bit more difficult to place; a lot of my siblings have disabilities, are from other countries, or were older when they came to us,” Beth said. “That really impacted how I see the world and how I view my role in the world.”

I don’t tear up often but when I first interviewed Beth and she told me this story, I nearly cried – on camera, no less. What an incredible family to come from and an even more remarkable way to honor her upbringing than to open a dance studio that seeks to include everyone.

Beth started dancing at only four-years-old and and teaching at 19 when she was in college. Dance has always been her love and opening up Dance Without Limits was the ideal way to bring her special perspective and passion for dancing to the Greenville and Simpsonville communities.

KinderStars Dance Program

One of the highlights of Dance Without Limits is its KinderStars dance program designed specifically for children transitioning from preschool dance to more structured classes. These 45-minute combo classes in tap/ballet, jazz/lyrical, and acro/hip hop are tailored to 5-6 year olds, ensuring they build upon the strong dance foundation laid by the Twinkle Toes preschool program.

What sets KinderStars apart are the fun class elements integrated into each session, including props like Twinkle bears and streamers, obstacle courses, bubbles, and free dance. These elements not only engage young dancers but also foster creativity and enjoyment in learning dance.

Come on and get moving, adults!

Beyond children’s classes, Dance Without Limits offers a robust Adult Dance Program that appeals to moms (and anyone else interested) looking to stay active, have fun, and socialize in a welcoming environment.

Classes include hip hop, ballet, jazz, and tap, catering to a variety of interests and fitness levels. As soon as these classes were announced, I’m not gonna lie, I absolutely looked them up because I love, love, love dance. I met my husband during salsa dance lessons many moons ago and still love to shake my hips whenever I get the chance so the adult dance classes are very appealing. And even if you don’t have a shred of rhythm in your body, these classes are still really enjoyable and fun for adults.

No one is going to judge you here and everyone is encouraged to enjoy a new way to unwind and exercise while having fun and developing new skills at their own pace.

Registration and Trial Classes

For those eager to join a Dance Without Limits class, registration for fall classes is currently open. Classes are in high demand, so interested individuals are encouraged to sign up soon to secure their spots.

If you’re not sure which class your child (or you) is interested in or fits into, Dance Without Limits offers a full week of trial classes for free. You’re welcome to put your child into as many classes within their age group or ability for a week as they wish. Same with adults. This trial period not only helps individuals find the classes that best suit their interests but also demonstrates Dance Without Limits’ commitment to ensuring a positive and fulfilling dance experience for every participant.

Additionally, Dance Without Limits doesn’t require their students to participate in recitals. They offer them if parents want to do that, but it is not required to be in the class. They also don’t have over-the-top or inappropriate costumes for their students. Everything is family-friendly and age-appropriate.

What Parents Say about Dance Without Limits

The best way to learn about a new dance studio is to talk to the parents who send their kids, right? So here are a couple testimonials from parents with kids at Dance Without Limits:

“We LOVE Dance Without Limits. The staff are incredibly kind and helpful and the teachers make the kids feel so loved and valued and seen! My girls have countdowns every week until dance day and have made such sweet friends there! We are grateful for DWL and that it’s become such a joyful place for our kids to grow.” – Meghan, dance mom

DWL Aug 2024

“Grateful to have finally found a dance opportunity for our 4 y/o daughter that feels like just the right fit. We love that it is non-competitive and the kids can participate in a showcase without having to be in competitions. Her teacher is patient, talented and kind. The space is clean and bright. And everyone is so relaxed and friendly at the studio. I love it when we go looking for something I think we’ll never find…and there it is right in our community! Highly recommended.” – April, dance mom

Whether you want to go downtown, play outside, or visit a local bookstore, we can help you find something free to do!

Kidding Around Main Street: Find the Mice

Mice on Main, Greenville, SC

Be sure to read our tips on Mice on Main for even more help.

Toddlers will love finding all the mice hidden on Main Street in downtown Greenville. Keep your toddler interested by having a plan before you go; I suggest already knowing where all the mice are. Read about the history and find some clues on the Mice on Main website.

Take digital pictures of your findings so you can retell the experience with your toddler. My little one loves to see herself in pictures and talk about what we did. Print these pictures at home or look out for free print codes at drugstores and you can create a book of your adventures.

You can purchase a fun picture book about the Mice on Main at the Mast General Store downtown Greenville or you can also find Mice on Main at the Greenville County Library.

Kidding Around Outside: Find a Park

When I first moved to Greenville, we found a new park every week to try out. Now, we have our amazing Guide to Greenville Parks! You can sort through our guide by location or desired amenity, like swings or shaded play space.

It is hard to just pick one that we love, but we’ve been visiting Heritage Park in Simpsonville every weekend lately. It is very shaded and has various physical levels of play.

Kidding Around in Nature: Take a Hike

Ready to hit the trails with your family? The Upstate and, if you’re willing to go a little further, western North Carolina offer oodles of free outdoor options for beginners and expert hikers alike.

Good intro hikes for my youngest child have been the Learning Loops at Lake Conestee Nature Preserve.

We’re also using this list of places that are perfect for hiking with toddlers and young children as a hiking bucket list.

If you’ve got more adventurous or older children, we’ve got you covered with our more comprehensive Guide to Hiking.

Kidding Around the Water: Splash Pads & Swimming Holes

Get your toddlers out to play in the water while the weather is still warm. Greenville is home to numerous splash pads, swimming holes, and stomp-able creeks.

One of my family’s favorite swimming holes is Wildcat Wayside, which features a pool at the foot of a 10-foot waterfall. Just park along the road and this fun spot is just a stone’s throw from the road.

Kidding Around on the Go: Scavenger Hunts

Check out Kidding Around Greenville’s Runway Park Scavenger Hunt. This online photo hunt for Runway Park is designed for young children 2-3.

Kidding Around The Swamp Rabbit Trail: Take a stroll

The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 22-mile trail that begins in downtown Greenville and runs all the way into Travelers Rest. The Swamp Rabbit Trail website provides an interactive map that will allow you to find a place to begin with parking and where restrooms are located (did your toddler just say they needed a potty break?)

Swamp Rabbit Trail in Greenville, SC

Find the perfect portion of the Swamp Rabbit Trail for your family with our Swamp Rabbit Trail Family Guide.

Our first time on the trail we began at the Swamp Rabbit Café and Grocery. The mile and a half that we did was both shaded and sunny and was full of people. I felt very safe and my toddler enjoyed seeing all the other people walking, running, and riding bikes.

We had a stroller and I’m very glad we did!  Be on the lookout for some serious bicyclists. Most will announce (shout) that they are coming up behind you. Just be aware if you have a toddler that likes to “explore” and not stick right by your side.

Kidding Around Downtown: Ride the Trolley

Take your toddler on a Trolley ride all around downtown! The trolley runs from 4 – 11 pm on Fridays, 10 am -11 pm on Saturdays, and from 10 am – 8 pm on Sundays.  The trolley makes approximately 20 stops on its route through downtown.

Check out the Downtown Trolley website for more details about the route. There’s even a trolley tracker app you can download to find the real-time location of the trolleys!

Kidding Around Playgroups: Meet New Friends

Being the parent of a toddler can be trying and we could all use some extra support sometimes. Maybe you are looking for advice, a shoulder to cry on, someone to share your prayers or joys with or some extra socialization for your toddler.

Facebook and websites like MeetUp are great resources for meeting other parents in the area that are looking to get together for some playtime fun! There are a variety of groups based on the area of Greenville you may live in or whether you stay at home, work, etc.

The Kroc Center is the Perfect Indoor Play Destination

Posted on | 6 Comments

Have you been to The Kroc Center in Greenville, SC?
One of its key features is the kid-friendly heated indoor waterpark. Greenville, SC residents can also enjoy a lap pool, tennis, indoor basketball courts, a gym, soccer fields, and so much more when they visit the Downtown Greenville location. We have all the information you need to enjoy a day at The Kroc Center, or maybe even become a member.

The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center

So we all know the weather in the Upstate can be unpredictable. With cold winters, rainy springs, and hot sunny summers I was pleasantly surprised to discover an amazing place to bring the kids swimming no matter what the weather.

Not only is there an indoor heated pool (it’s heated to 80-82 degrees), but it is equipped with a playground structure with slides, water guns, and water pouring down in all directions for the kids to splash around in. The Kroc Center near downtown Greenville is a best-kept secret that I feel all moms with little ones need to know about!

The center also offers a multipurpose gym, fitness center, performance arts center, and so much more! As one of 26 locations throughout the US, The Kroc Center prides itself on maintaining a positive relationship with the Greenville community. The community center provides several programs to empower families and youth through specialized programs.

The Aquatics Center at the Kroc Center

Sometimes, we all just need to escape the weather at an indoor waterpark. Greenville, SC has one at the Kroc Center! The Aquatics Center at The Kroc Center is not only a great indoor play place for kids, it’s perfect for kids of all ages. If you have a baby that isn’t walking yet they can enjoy the water too. With its beach-style entry including a rubber floor, the pool area is perfect for crawlers! And, here’s the best part, you get to take the day off from wrangling kiddos for sunscreen!

At its deepest point, the water is only 4 feet deep. Behind the play structure, there’s a place where buckets dump water down on the kids below. If you have children over 48″ tall they will enjoy the big slide that actually goes outside the building. Heck, it’s even a blast for the parents!

Did I mention they have a rock climbing wall? Plus a lap pool, hot tub, and benches to place your towel on. Readers have mentioned that the pool can be closed during inclement weather. So if storms are threatening, you might want to call ahead.

In addition to the kid-friendly section of the aquatics center, The Kroc Center also has a 25 meter x 25 yard competition pool where you can get in some laps during your visit. You will also find a warm therapy pool in the corner of the recreation center, perfect for after a long day.

Aquatics Reservations

You will need to make reservations before heading to the aquatics center, as they are currently required. Spots occasionally fill up quickly, so if you know you are planning to go, make your reservation the day before. Guest passes are $12/person.

Swim Lessons

The Kroc aquatics center also offers swim lessons for all ages starting at 6 months old. Swim lessons are typically once per week, for 8 weeks. Prices are currently $100 for members and $120 for nonmembers.
