Go Old School and Play All Day: Asheville Retrocade

In Asheville, NC you’ll find the Asheville Retrocade, a fantastic place to spend a few hours during rainy, cold, or hot weather. You can play all day for one price and it’s great for the whole family.

Need someplace in Asheville, NC to spend a few hours indoors during a rainy, cold, or hot day? We’ve got just the place: Asheville Retrocade, an old-school arcade that features two floors of games and is family-friendly.

I am always looking for fun, indoor things to do when the weather isn’t cooperating and found just the spot at Asheville Retrocade. For this trip, I was visiting with a friend and her young daughter staying in the area and thanks to Google, found this indoor mecca of Pac-Man and race car driving. Now you don’t even need Google to find cool places like this since you have this story!

So at Asheville Retrocade, you pay a flat fee of $10/person (kids under 5 are free) and that gives you access to two floors of pinball, Pac-Man, dance-off games, race car games, air hockey, skeeball, and tons more games. No quarters are needed here.

They claim to have more than 5,000 games at the arcade. They do have a lot but I’m not sure it equals 5,000. That said, I totally lost track of time there and ended up spending about two-and-a-half hours at the arcade, which was such a fun way to spend time with my own kids and my friend.

Play All Day with Retro Games

When you get to Asheville Retrocade, you pay $10/person and get a wristband, which allows you to come and go all day. The arcade is truly like taking a step back in time. I didn’t play a lot of video games as a kid but the ones I did play, like Pac-Man, are ingrained in my childhood and I love them. It was a lot of fun to play those nostalgic games I did as a kid.

We went during Christmas Break and there was actually a line to get in. I was nervous that we wouldn’t be able to play many games because there were too many people. But I shouldn’t have been worried. We only ever had to wait maybe five minutes for a game and there were always spots open at other games that we could play.

The kids we had with us were ages 3, 9, and 12 and all of us had a blast. The place is truly family-friendly and welcoming. There were a lot of families when we went and it was so much fun to enjoy that time together and see other families doing the same.

Food and Drinks at Asheville Retrocade

The arcade has several options for drinks, including local craft beer, wine, and fountain drinks. They have free water available also.

They also have snack food available for purchase.

Things to Know When Visiting Asheville Retrocade

Here are a few tips when you visit:

There is free street parking, which is awesome.
After 9 pm, guests need to be ages 21+
If a game is occupied that you want, just be patient and wait or play something else. It will open up!
There are bathrooms and hand sanitizer available but still wash your hands during and after your visit.
Expect heavier crowds during school breaks, holidays, and rainy days.
You can book a private party at the arcade.

Heading to the Asheville Retrocade

The arcade is open daily Noon-2 am. After 9 pm, patrons need to be 21+. You can purchase your wristband when you get there.

Mom Review: Greenville Gemstone Mine

Looking for something fun to do inside in downtown Greenville? KAG Contributor Andrea Beam is sharing a family favorite with us today, the Greenville Gemstone Mine, located right along Downtown Greenville’s Main Street across from the Hyatt. This shop offers unique gifts and a place where kids can do a little gem mining for themselves.

We have an amazing time every time we hang out in downtown Greenville. However, if you ask my son to name his favorite activity, he would tell you it is “finding treasure” at Greenville Gemstone Mine on Main Street.

While I can’t say I share his love for “treasure,” I do appreciate the tables full of unique jewelry and cases of sparkly stones. The prices are just as appealing as the merchandise. It is definitely worth a visit (or two), even without little ones in tow!

I’ve never been in the store when it wasn’t packed. If there is one thing I am not completely crazy about, it’s the size of the place. It’s rather small. Having said that, we always manage to make our way through the crowd to the back (where the fun begins) with ease.

Now to our mining adventure! The first thing you’ll do is choose your bucket of rocks. They have many sizes, but the $9 kiddie bucket suits my budget just fine. If you happen to have extra cash burning a hole through your wallet, you can pay as much as $55 for a family bucket. Once you’ve made your choice, the (extra friendly) associates will give you a ziplock bag, a Gemstone identification chart and turn you loose! My son likes to take his time in the magical waters and smiles as each stone turns into something shiny and new. This is the part where you, as the parent, can stand back and check your Facebook page – I mean, take pictures.

When you’re done, you’ll leave with a slightly damp bag of treasure and one happy customer!

Kids (And Parents) Won’t Want to Leave This Play Spot in Travelers Rest

There’s a really fun indoor play space in Travelers Rest that you don’t want to miss. And it includes a relaxing coffee shop for parents. Kristina checked out Palmetto Proper and here’s what to expect.

“Mom, can we go back tomorrow?” both my kids asked in unison seconds after we left Palmetto Proper, the café/kids play area/retail space in Travelers Rest. My kids are 9 and 6 and I had to drag them out of there!

Palmetto Proper was designed for parents to have a place where they can maybe get a couple things done on their laptop while their kids play safely or catch up with a friend over a cup of delicious coffee and tempting snacks.

Huge Open Space + Cozy Cafe

Travelers Rest has a lot going for it and if I’m ever anywhere near there, I always visit. I just love Sidewall Pizza, TRee House Cafe & Art Studio, and TR Makers.

Yet there has been this gap of an indoor place for kids to get out their energy – but not anymore.

Palmetto Play offers year round, indoor play and a combination of a place where kids can get their energy out plus rest and relaxation for parents.

Palmetto Proper used to have a small retail location in Cherrydale but ended up expanding to the large space in Travelers Rest when it became available since the original owner had a vision of a place where kids could enjoy time to explore and play while parents had a chance to catch their breath, meet for coffee, or just chill out for a bit while their kids got out energy.

Imagination Reigns Supreme

The space is huge with tall ceilings, colorful paint, and a big, padded floor where kids can run around. There is a large play structure with a climbing apparatus and seesaw-like contraption in the middle of the space. There’s a small ball pit, an imitation garden, and farm market.

There is a big loft that will be used for birthday parties or private events that overlooks the play area. Under that are little rooms that are totally geared towards letting kids use their imaginations.

There’s a movie theater room with dress up outfits, little chairs with popcorn holders, and a curtain. This was my kids’ favorite room.

Next to the theater is an adorable grocery market with pasta boxes, plastic produce, and little shopping carts. And next to that room is an animal vet hospital, which has lots of cute medical toys and x-rays.

In the corner by the bathrooms is a construction zone, perfect for kids to build whatever they desire.

Enclosed Little Kids Area

When my kids were a bit smaller, I was always anxious about taking them to indoor places where bigger kids ruled the play structures. Palmetto Proper has a small space that is perfect for kids in that crawling and just-walking stage that is totally enclosed and right next to tables where their parents can easily keep an eye on them.

This is certainly a thoughtful touch.

Actually, the entire kids area is enclosed, which makes it a lot easier to really enjoy that cup of coffee or send those pressing emails and not worry about your kids escaping.

Retail + Coffee

The first thing I noticed when I walked in the door to Palmetto Proper was actually some really fluffy pullovers. I love fluffy pullovers. But there’s more: candles that smell so heavily of vanilla that it makes you want to buy every single one and light them all around your house, tons of Melissa & Doug toys for your kids, super cute dresses and t-shirts, and jewelry and hand towels.

The owners have done a nice job sourcing a good variety of products that will appeal to a wide audience. You could probably get all of your Christmas shopping done.

And the coffee menu also caught my eye with delicious-sounding frappes and spiced chai lattes. They even have juice boxes for kids and lots of snacks because, really, kids essentially run on snacks.

Play Passes + Age Restrictions

As of April 2023, only kids ages 0-6 will be able to use the play space during open play. Palmetto Proper will have board games that older kids can freely use.

Daily admission gets kids access to Palmetto Proper for the whole day. You can go in and out and play when you like. Daily admission is $10 per child.

Monthly, quarterly, and yearly memberships are also available.

Be sure you and your kids wear socks as they are needed to enjoy all the play structures.

Make it a Day Trip

If you don’t live in Travelers Rest and want to explore for the day, hanging out at Palmetto Proper is the ideal way to spend time there. It’s right across the street from the Swamp Rabbit Trail and within walking distance to tons of fabulous places in town like the Whistle Stop Cafe, Sidewall Pizza, TRee House Cafe & Art Studio, TR Makers, Tandem Creperie, and Sunrift Adventures.

There are also lots of cute shops to check out and Trailblazer Park isn’t far away. OH – and Sidewall Pastry and Farmhouse Tacos are literally right next door to Palmetto Proper. We love Travelers Rest so much we wrote a whole guide to it.

Parents who are only there to watch are allowed in for free with their children. The monthly schedule of sessions can be found on the Roller Sports Rink website. They have Homeschool Skate every third Friday of the month.

Roller Sports has drop-off events on Friday and Saturday nights from 7-11 pm for kids 10 and over.

About Underpin Lanes N’ Lounge

Spartanburg’s downtown is coming into its own and we couldn’t be more excited. Until recently, to spend time in an upscale bowling alley you’d have to travel to a larger city like Atlanta. Several years ago Greenville got their own boutique bowling alley in the form of Stone Pin Company.

Now one of the Co-owners of Stone Pin has been brought on board to bring that same kind of entertainment to the people of Spartanburg.

Not your typical bowling alley, UnderPin is intimately sized with just 8 lanes. This is good a good thing in my opinion because it keeps the noise level down. This can be helpful when you’re enjoying a date night or if you have a child with sensory issues. Even though the alley itself is small, the lanes are regulation size.

The other feature that sets them apart from a typical alley is their menu. Don’t worry; they have all the things you might expect at a bowling alley in the way of food. Things like nachos and quesadillas are elevated to a whole new level with the use of ingredients like brisket and pork belly. The menu includes burgers, wraps, salads, and a kids menu.

Things to Know When You Visit Underpin

If you are planning on heading out, here’s the info you’ll need to know to snag a lane.

Reservations are only allowed for large parties and private events. If you are thinking of having a large group of friends join you, the alley has a nice semi-private area where your group can hang out with their own lanes. All other guests are first-come, first-serve access to the lanes.

Lanes are rented out by the hour and those super chic shoes will cost you $4 to borrow. A lane accommodates up to 6 players. Playing on a Friday or Saturday night from 5 pm – 10 pm will cost you more than any other time of the week. The peak rate for those times is $40 per hour on a lane, the rest of the time lanes are $24 an hour.

Initial Q: Social Bar & Smokehouse is open above UnderPin and you can enjoy a sit-down dinner upstairs, then head downstairs to bowl. The menu at Initial Q is the same type of elevated fare you see at Underpin. It’s not the typical BBQ meal you find in most places.

Mom Review: Bowling at Rock Springs Impact Center

I’m about to be really honest with you guys. I HATE bowling. Like, I really hate it. Everything from the unsanitary ball and shoes to the smoky atmosphere makes me want to crawl into a bathtub full of hand sanitizer. It’s really sad because our boys love to bowl, but I just can’t muster up the will to carry them. Don’t worry, I’m not passing along my disdain, I just always happen to have another activity planned when they ask.

My nephew, Preston’s, birthday was in March, and guess what kind of party he asked for?

You got it.

“Great,” I thought to myself (or I may have said it out loud a few times, but that’s beside the point).

Clearly, I was less than excited about his choice of venue, but because I need all the brownie points I can get when it comes to child-rearing, I began to call around to various bowling alleys (I’m such a sacrificial aunt).

Enter my new best friend, Ashley. Ashley’s son is Preston’s best friend and they had just been to a bowling party at Rock Springs Baptist Church’s Impact Center. There’s a bowling alley there!

Say what??

“You really should give them a call, it was so nice,” she said. Faster than you could blow out a candle, we were on the phone.

The fact that it was at a church made me feel better. If nothing else, I knew the atmosphere would be family-friendly. Alcohol, tobacco, and offensive language are all prohibited in the bowling alley.

A bowling birthday party at Rock Springs

Needless to say, we booked his party. It was a win, win for everyone.

I was impressed the moment we walked through the door. To say that it was clean would be an understatement. There are twelve lanes for you and your family/friends to enjoy. And maybe it was just me, but the lanes seemed a lot roomier than your average bowling alley. Believe it or not, I ended up having a blast. Preston and all of his little friends did too, but you probably guessed that already!

A few things you should know when thinking about booking your party at Rock Springs’ Impact Center

You purchase a 2 hour time slot – I’ve found this to be true of most party venues, so no surprise here.

Pizza/Drinks are part of the package – They encourage you to have a headcount ready and pre-order your pizzas so they are ‘hot and ready’ by a certain time the night of the party. When you arrive, you’ll be given a “menu” type sheet of paper with a list of drinks. Once you turn your sheet in, you’ll be given a specific time that your order will be ready. Of course, you’ll want to plan the bowling portion of the party around the food.

Outside food and drinks (even water) are not permitted. But, you can bring cupcakes!

Bring extra cash – Even though you pay for the pizza and drinks together, you’ll want to have extra cash for the snack bar. Again, take it from me. They have nacho chips, popcorn, and other over-the-counter snack foods for a VERY minimal price. Depending on what time you have your party, the kiddos may want to snack before the pizza is ready. Who doesn’t want popcorn once the smell fills the room? Maybe you’re more disciplined than me, and if so, my hats off to you!

Party packages begin at $225 for 12 bowlers. That includes the 2 hour party with 2 pizzas, soda and more. They have other party packages as well.

Regular Admission:

$5/per game and that includes shoe rental, or $18 per lane (up to 6 people, includes shoes)
On Tuesdays, Seniors bowl for $2/game from 10 am to 12 pm
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 pm to 9 pm everyone pays $3 per game, including shoes

Lanes host up to six bowlers.

No reservations – Lanes are first come, first serve unless you’ve booked a party. Children ages 14 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

As with any other bowling alley, socks are required and available for purchase.

What is an Escape Room?

An Escape Room is a place where solving puzzles will lead you to clues that will lead to another puzzle until you’ve solved the mystery that creates the theme for the room. There’s usually an attendant watching players through a security camera, to help give you clues if you get stuck. They want you to succeed and are there to gently guide you to the clues you need to continue on and keep the fun going if you become frustrated.

You’re not really trapped, locked, or otherwise restricted to the room. You can leave to use the restroom or for any reason. Just remember, the clock doesn’t stop and you’ll have teammates counting on your help. Escape rooms are the perfect date night, team-building activity for co-workers, and birthday celebration activities for those impossible-to-please teens & tweens! The rooms come in all different themes depending on the venue.

At Trapped In The Upstate, Greer’s only escape room, they currently have six themes, including Saving Santa, The Legend of Lizzie, Asylum, The Cabin, and VooDoo Shack. Each room had a varying difficulty level, with most of the rooms lasting 60 minutes.

“Archeologist Robert Robertson ventured into a Voodoo Shack and was never seen again. His family believes that he has been cursed and his soul is being held by supernatural forces. Can you find Robert’s Relic and set his soul free…or is it too late?” -Trapped In The Upstate

I feel like I have to tread carefully, so as to not give anything away that would spoil for readers that go (and you totally should).

Waking up to the Roberts Relic Escape Room, sets the tone for what you are about to experience. The reclaimed wood panels and flickering gas lamps begin to transport you to the bayou and some undisclosed location where no one would hear your screams. Why are you even there? Budget Basement travel agent? Who knows? That’s not important anymore. Now you just have to figure out how you’re getting back home.

Solving the mystery of what happened to “Uncle Robert” is your only goal. That and doing it in 60 minutes or less, or before that voodoo priestess comes back to claim another victim.

This room was a lot of fun, and I suggest you bring at least two other adults with you. The more eyeballs on things the better.

Clues For The Escape Rooms at Trapped In The Upstate

Without giving anything away, I can offer you these tips for your time in the rooms.

Just assume that everything you see in the room is there for a reason. Clues could be staring you in the face, so take nothing for granted.
Nothing will be higher than a short person could reach. If they didn’t supply you with a ladder, you won’t need one. Climbing on furniture won’t be necessary and is not approved by the Voodoo Priestess.
If something won’t move if you try to push it lightly – it’s not meant to move. This isn’t a strong man contest.
The resetting of the padlocks, as shown to you at the beginning is IMPERATIVE to remember. In your panic and hustle to enter possible combinations – you will forget to reset. So if you only take a few things away from reading this, let this be one of them. Push the padlock up and down 3 times to reset it.
Pay attention to the TV. There may be clues given to you on the screen when you need them.

The room is not super scary, but young children won’t be able to help solve the puzzles and may become a hindrance to others trying to solve the room. This is best suited for tween-age and older players. The Magician’s Parlor will be better suited for families and elementary-aged children.

Main Event in Greenville, SC Has Tuesday Meal Deals, an Arcade, and more!

Did you know that Greenville has a new family entertainment venue? Main Event Greenville, SC is where to go! You’ll find this fun venue right next to Top Golf, off of Garlington Road right near the I-85 Pelham Road exit.

Main Event offers bowling, laser tag, tons of arcade games, and virtual reality games, a restaurant, a bar with billiards tables, and lots more. They host birthday parties, events, and special deals like Kids Eat Free on Tuesdays. We visited Main Event and got the scoop on all the family fun.

Laser Tag

Reserve your laser tag time and then get ready to seek out your opponents as you creep and dart around the laser tag room’s maze-like walls and openings. My whole family agreed this was their favorite thing to do at Main Event, even for a mom who hasn’t played laser tag in at least 2 decades.

Also, for the official record, I scored higher than all my kids and my husband. My teens were in disbelief that Mom beat them.

Anyway, the laser tag was lots of fun, the equipment was easy to use, and the room was mainly flat, so maneuvering was easy.

Bowling at Main Event

You could play a standard game of bowling, or you can mix things up with a huge variety of themed games and special challenges. Terrible bowlers? That’s ok. We played one challenge where the goal was actually to hit the lit-up bumper with the ball at specific places in order to double or triple the points earned for pins knocked down.

The bowling alley offers an open alley with lots of lanes, and then also a more private room with 4 lanes. These lanes were much quieter and our group enjoyed the break from the noise of the venue.

The Arcade

You won’t need tokens or coins for this arcade. Load your Main Event game card and swipe at each game you’d like to play.

The arcade offers virtual reality games, lots of claw-style prize games, traditional ball arcade games, games for prize points, and also favorites like Mario Kart, motorcycle racing, and dance games.

Restaurant and Bar at Main Event

The Family Kitchen offers pizza, burgers, chicken sandwiches, nachos, salads, and even desserts. Main Event will be offering lots of specials, including a Kids Eat Free special for Tuesdays, all day. Kids 12 and under will eat free with an adult’s meal purchase.

The bar area, with billiards tables, offers a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Birthday Parties at Main Event

Yes, Main Event will host birthday parties. This would be a great spot for the sometimes hard-to-please pre-teen and teen birthday kid. Packages range from $12 to $30 per person and offer a variety of venue attractions and food options.
