Escape Artist Is One of Greenville’s Best Places for Fun and Mystery

Posted on | No Comments

Do you think you can beat the clock at Escape Artist Greenville SC? Several years ago, some friends were visiting from out of town and wanted to meet up. When we asked them what they would like to do, they suggested that we meet up at one of Greenville’s top escape rooms, Escape Artist Greenville. We are very glad that we said yes. In fact, we had such a great time we can’t stop recommending Escape Artist to all of our friends in Greenville. Escape Artist Greenville was even voted one of the Best Escape Rooms in 2025 by Newsweek, how cool!

What is Escape Artist Greenville Like?

Upon arriving, we were energized immediately by owners Will and Kim Rutherford’s enthusiasm. It was impossible to not catch the excitement about trying to test our group’s wits against one of their escape rooms.

After a short explanation of rules such as “don’t tear apart the ceiling” followed by a creepy story intro we handed over our iPhones and headed into  “Dr. Fratelli’s cabin”. Inside the mad scientist’s cabin, we quickly got to work looking inside and under the many objects in order to start finding clues. These clues then led to puzzles that had to be solved in order to find the special locked exit and escape the room where Dr. Fratelli had trapped us. Of course, the primary entrance remained unlocked so we weren’t actually physically locked in. It is just a game!

We were given just one hour to escape the room, but we had the ability to ask for three clues during our hour. Will was watching us through his surveillance cameras and was quick to offer the exact help needed for each clue. The puzzles were challenging but still simple enough for a group to solve.

Did We Escape?

Of course, the first question everyone asks is “Did you escape?” Actually, Will told us that only 20-25% of the groups that try the room “get out”. We made it though with only a couple of minutes left to spare and we used all 3 hints.

Will greeted us after we finished and shared his own observations of how we solved the puzzle. We then were allowed to grab our phones again so that Kim could take a victory photo for us showcasing our time.

Is Escape Artist Greenville Worth the Money?

Escape Artist is a little bit more expensive than most of the attractions my husband and I visit, starting at around $30/person. It was worth every penny we spent. We had so much fun working together, laughing at our mistakes, and bragging about what we solved. The room was very well designed, all of the clues were clear and worked correctly, and Will & Kim executed everything wonderfully. It’s no wonder that they have received so many 5 star reviews.

Any hints?

Well, of course, I can’t give any hints on how to solve the puzzle because that would ruin the fun, but here are a couple tips to help you have the best chances of victory:

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask for a clue when you are stuck. It’s better to use them up than not get out!
  2. Get started quickly. Don’t be shy about looking around the room when you enter it. The sooner you find your first clues the better.
  3. Don’t overthink your clues. None of the clues will require knowing weird facts and you won’t mess up your clues by touching or moving objects in the room.
  4. Playing an escape room game on your tablet or phone ahead of time will help give you an idea of the types of puzzles you might encounter.
  5. Have fun! Don’t get too stressed out. This activity is all about having a good time.

What About Kids?

I visited Escape Artist Greenville with 3 other adults and I thought that it was a great adult activity but older children and teens would definitely enjoy it as well. Children under 16 are allowed to attend with an adult, and Will told us that he had even recently hosted a party of 11-year-olds. Will did tell us that he adapts the clues as necessary for children and that the children who have come through really have enjoyed the puzzle. All of the content in the story and inside the room was appropriate for any age audience and there weren’t any thematic elements that would scare a child.

About Escape Artist: Greenville SC

Be sure to book your time ahead of time online. Due to the nature of the event, space is limited and 2 hours advanced reservation is required.

This attraction is completely unique to Greenville. While there are other “escape rooms” in Greenville and in other cities, Will & Kim specifically designed this room and story making it a one-of-a-kind adventure.

The attraction can fit 2-8 people at a time. Your group may get placed with another group if you don’t purchase the entire 8 tickets.

In addition to Dr. Fratelli’s Cabin, there are four other escape rooms including our current favorite Starlight Motel (a spooky, interactive room for adults). You can read about Starlight Motel in our review.

There is a second location of Escape Artist Greenville, located at Hampton Station. The Hampton Station location has fewer rooms (Help Wanted and Dark Lullaby), but the proximity to dining, breweries, and shopping makes it a great activity.

Kids Play & Cafe: Three-Story Play Place with Cafe, Easley, SC

Posted on |

Kids Play and Cafe in Easley, SC is the answer to what many parents of small kids have been asking for in the Upstate, SC – a large, safe, and fun place for their kids to play indoors that also includes wifi, coffee, and snacks for parents and their kids. We visited and have all the details on Kids Play & Cafe!

A brand new indoor play place, cafe included, is now open in Easley, SC and we know our readers are absolutely going to love this place. Kids Play & Cafe was designed by parents and their kids for parents and their kids. It has all kinds of fun and interactive play structures and is perfect for indoor fun plus great coffee – what a great combination!

We’ve got all you need to know about Kids Play and Cafe in Easley and how to make sure you don’t miss out on any of the fun!

Play structures indoors at Kids Play and Cafe in Easley, SC

About Kids Play & Cafe

Kids Play & Cafe started out of a dream a decade ago that Jennifer and her husband, Keith, thought about doing far in the future. Keith was in the military and settling in one place and creating an awesome indoor play place would have to wait. After their two daughters were born and started growing up, the girls got in on the dream and the family started to take steps to make it happen.

And here they are. It’s obvious a lot of thought went into this place. The play structures were designed completely by the family themselves to maximize imagination as were the little tiny town structures. The setup was designed so parents can sit comfortably and pretty much see their kids all of the time yet chat with their friends if they want to.

And coffee – good, local coffee – is available. High-five to Jennifer and Keith.

The couple also asked for a lot of input on what parents would want to purchase for food and drinks at the cafe, which they took into consideration when figuring out what to offer.

The Play Structures

There are two play structures connected by a bridge in the 5400 square foot space. They are soft play, climbing structures that allow not only kids to play on them but also their parents if they want. I tested it out myself and indeed, there is enough space for an adult to get up in there and play!

There is a set of three slides plus a twisted barrel slide. There are tunnels, a little zip line, swing, ball pit, and climbing structures within each play area. And there is only one entrance which makes it a bit easier to keep track of the kids.

The Imaginative Play Areas

These little tiny town-inspired play areas are my favorite things in the entire place. Jennifer and Keith’s daughters’ fingerprints of imagination are all over these, which I think makes them extra fun.

The barber shop is adorable. There are a lot of dress-up clothes, play hair care and makeup items, a barber chair (very comfortable, I may add), hats, a mirror, and lots of other thoughtful and fun touches.

The kitchen has all kinds of play pots and pans plus a little breakfast table with a menu. There are play fruits and vegetables in a pantry setup and an apron.

Next door is the doctor’s office, which has all kinds of play items you’d find in a medical office plus charts and first aid kit supplies. It’s adorable.

And lastly, there’s a supermarket complete with tiny shopping carts, reusable bags, grocery items, and a scanner for checkout.

The Cafe + WiFi

Besides excellent coffee sourced locally from a vet-owned coffee roaster, the cafe has smoothies, lunchables, snacks, drinks, and some healthier items available.

There are plenty of seating options available around Kids Play & Cafe where parents can even bring their laptop to work, get caffeinated, and let their kids run around and get out energy.

Birthday Parties

Of course Kids Play & Cafe in Easley is offering birthday party packages because, really, this is a great place to hold a party.

All parties include at least 75 minutes of play and 45 minutes of festivities in their private party room. Packages start at $309 and include a certain number of kids and add-ons like food and decorations as you need. Weekday parties are a little cheaper and all packages can be found on their website.

Tips to Enjoy Kids Play & Cafe in Easley

Here are a few tips so you can enjoy your time at Kids Play & Cafe.

  • All kids will need to wear gripper socks, which you can purchase there. Bring them back every time so you don’t need to purchase new ones!
  • The play structures are designed for kids from crawling up to age 10.
  • Admission is an all-day pass so you can come and go as you like. There are some great local restaurants like Tropical Burger to enjoy if you want to get lunch and then come back or do nap time and come back for some afternoon play.
  • Keep an eye on their social media as they will have times for special needs kids to come and enjoy the play area plus tot times and events for tweens.
  • Save time when you get there and sign your waiver before you go.

The Princess Palace is What Greenville Moms Have Been Waiting For

Posted on | No Comments

If there ever was an hour for some time away from daily life and for moms to bond with their daughters without the pressure of eLearning, technology crashes, work frustrations, and a world turned upside down, this is it. Enter the Princess Palace, an upscale salon and event space decked out in cotton candy pink that is solely for the purposes of moms (or grandmas or aunts) connecting with and enjoying time with their daughters.

AUGUST 2022 UPDATE: The Princess Palace is temporarily closed as they are moving to a new location. We’ll update when they reopen.

Pink salon chairs lined up against a pink wall

Dreaming of a Princess Palace

Farrah Owens has a lot on her plate already as she is a mother and runs a home healthcare business. But when she was doing her nails with her daughters one day, they asked to go to a salon for some special time together. Hmm, where would they go?

While there are nail salons in the Greenville area that have one or two chairs for kids, none are designed specifically for Mommy & Me spa days the way Farrah envisioned.

Farrah decided to change that. She envisioned creating a relaxing, one-of-a-kind salon complete with plush pink and white pillows, actual chairs that look straight out of a fairy tale castle and fit for a queen, comfortable robes, and of course, princess punch and tiaras.

She told me she really wanted to create a space where “little girls can be little girls” and be pampered and be treated like royalty for a day.

Dreams do come true.

Salon Services & Events

The Princess Palace offers manicures, pedicures, and mini-makeup sessions. Mini-manicures start at $12, mini-pedicures at $20, and various VIP packages with all the royal amenities like a wand, tiara, princess punch, and plush robe, go up to $85, which covers two people. Pricing is available at this link.

Pink and white salon furniture.

The palace is designed primarily as an entertainment and pampering facility so they do not have acrylics and gel services but offer the highest quality products for mani-pedis. You know you’re in for a fun and relaxing time at the five star Princess Palace.

They also have a large event space where parents can opt for a spa-themed party for their own little princesses. One of the options include lots of dress-up costumes and a mini-runway fashion show. Can you hear the little girls squealing already?

Farrah also designed a relaxation room with dim lighting, a salt lamp, and fluffy pillows where moms and their daughters can hang out and read a princess book or receive a mini-facial. The facials for the little girls are even edible, which I had no idea existed before. Farrah stressed to me that the salon is very much geared towards little girls but also pampers moms too. But I do want an edible facial.

“I wanted to bring something fun to the Upstate”, said Farrah. “After a long week of stress, we want moms, and grandmoms, to come in with their daughters and have fun together.”

The Princess Palace is geared towards young girls ages 4 through 16 and their moms and grandmas.

Being a salon service and entertainment venue, The Princess Palace is already taking great care in cleaning and disinfecting procedures. There is no mask policy in place but guests are certainly free to wear them if they like and employees will be wearing them.

The Princess Palace takes both appointments and walk-ins. Make your reservation here.

Your toddler will love running, jumping, climbing, and swinging all around the gym!  3. Tell Me a Story Theatre

Ms. Traysie is a joy to watch as she brings to life various characters from children’s picture books.  Although this is advertised to a “Pre-K” audience, my active toddler always loves going!  I think it’s a great opportunity for my toddler to be in comfortable and forgiving environment where she can observe older children sitting, listening, and participating.  Every time we’ve been, the crowd of children have been so excited, and many younger siblings are in tow. Stories are told at 9:30 am and 11:00 am on scheduled Tuesdays. At $1 per person, it is hard to beat this price!

Shannon Forest Christian School Provides an Exceptional Education and Much More

Posted on | No Comments

Choosing how to educate your child involves making important decisions, often early on in their life when parenting is still pretty new. The Greenville area has many wonderful schools, which is great – but it can also be overwhelming. I’ve talked to tons of parents in the area about their recommendations for schools and one always, always tops the list: Shannon Forest Christian School (SFCS).

Thank you to Shannon Forest Christian School for supporting Kidding Around Greenville by sponsoring this website post.

The parents I’ve spoken with about Shannon Forest get fairly animated when they discuss the school. They love it. Like really love it. SFCS has wonderful academics, athletics, and the encouraging atmosphere of a Christian education experience. Parents specifically mention the teachers and the Transitional Kindergarten program has two of the highlights.

So here is why Shannon Forest may be a great fit for your family.

Shannon Forest Christian School

Academic Environment

SFCS offers Shannon Beginnings for K3 and K4, in both full and half day options for the smaller ones. The program helps to prepare young children for an easy transition to Kindergarten which includes lots of guided play and nurturing care from loving teachers.

If some children are not ready for Kindergarten, Shannon Forest offers a unique Transitional Kindergarten Program. The Lower School includes Kindergarten 5 through 5th Grade.  Students also enjoy time in the Innovations STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Lab.

Middle school is tough and can be a hard transition for some students. SFCS conducts a specially designed Crusader Crossroads program to ease students through this big step, plus classes, study sessions and one-on-one tutoring options are targeted at student success.

The Upper School at SFCS encompasses students in 7th-12th Grade and focuses on Math, Science, History and English. Several Advanced Placement (AP) courses like English, Calculus, U.S. History, European Biology, Music Theory and Biology are available for qualified students. The SFCS Director of College Counseling assists students and their families as they apply for college and explore career options.

Athletics and The Arts

On the athletic field, students in 6th through 12th Grade are able to participate in a variety of sports teams including soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, cheerleading, soccer, golf, baseball, and track & field.

The school has no shortage of creative outlets for the students. SFCS offers Foreign Language, Drama, Choir, Yearbook and Visual Arts. They also perform concerts and theatrical productions for the school and community.

Christ-Centered Values

Shannon Forest is unapologetic about its worldview; it is distinctly Christian and rooted in discipleship. Every member of the faculty and staff understands that their vocation as teachers is to teach in a way that is Christ-centered, academically excellent, and designed to move students into higher categorical thinking. They also understand that teaching is discipleship by its very nature. Family, love, and truth are at the heart of what every student and family experiences on the Shannon Forest campus.

SFCS develops these role models by requiring a certain number of service hours from each student where they are able to demonstrate their Christian faith and values in the real world.

The Vision of the school is “Educating and equipping students to pursue excellence and impact the world for Jesus Christ.” The mission is similar: “We are a Christian community providing a comprehensive college-preparatory education rooted in the truth of a Biblical worldview and marked by wisdom, excellence, and purpose.”

Shannon Forest 50th anniversary

Fall Fest

Shannon Forest is celebrating their 50th year and are inviting anyone and everyone to their big Fall Fest on Thursday, October 25th from 5 pm – 8:50 pm. A BBQ dinner will be available for purchase but lots of free activities are happening as well, like Children’s Activities, swing dancing, music including a performance by Brandon and The Books, and special guest, Pastor Clayton King.

To purchase the dinner, visit the Shannon Forest website. To schedule a tour of the school, email or call the Director of Admissions, Candace Kurtz at ckurtz@shannonforest.com or call 864.678.5113.

My Daughter’s Super Fun Birthday Party at Pigtails & Crewcuts

Posted on | No Comments

KAG team member Elizabeth shares her family’s birthday party experience at Pig Tails and Crew Cuts.  For more great birthday ideas, check out Kidding Around Greenville’s Ultimate Birthday Party Guide.

Thank you to Pigtails & Crewcuts for hosting my daughter’s birthday party in exchange for this review.  Even though the party was given in trade, all opinions are my own!

Okay so I think I got the title of this post wrong.  It should be “my daughter’s super fun and SUPER EASY birthday party at Pigtails & Crewcuts” but that seemed a little long.  And I really needed an easy party this year.  You see, when my daughter turned 7 she wanted a party at home.  What I expected to be a low-key party ended up being 14 little girls, a cheer theme party, complete with high school cheerleaders.

I scoured pintrest for birthday party ideas for weeks.  I spent the entire week prior to the party making pom poms out of streamers and cutting megaphones out of poster board for 14 little girls to decorate and scream into. (What was I thinking?!?)  I enlisted the services of a few high school cheerleaders and begged my friend to stay and help me manage the bash.

The girls made megaphones, learned cheers, danced, even had their faces painted. The party was fun; really fun.  I, however, was completely exhausted when it was finally over.  And my house was a wreck.  I had spent a ridiculous amount of time and way more money than I had intended.

So when my daughter’s 8th birthday rolled around I had one firm rule – the party was not going to be at home.  Nope.

Pigtails & Crewcuts haircuts for kids

Before the party

My daughter is a girly girl.  She loves playing dress up, dons lip gloss any chance she gets and adores getting her nails done, even if only on my bathroom floor.  So it seemed like a no-brainer to hold her party at a salon where she and her little buddies could be pampered and play dress up.  And my excitement was only heightened when, after chatting over the party plans with the salon owner, I realized all I had to do was bring cupcakes.  They would handle the rest. Sign me up!

So rather than spending weeks getting ready for the party I spent, ummm, maybe an hour picking up cupcakes for the party.  The helpful staff at Pigtails & Crewcuts took care of everything else.  It was exactly what I was hoping for!

Party time

We arrived a bit early so my daughter could get all dolled up before her guests arrived.  She had plenty to choose from – would she be a princess or a diva?  She even had the option of a pirate but she’s way too fancy for that!  She got her hair styled in a way her mom could never pull off and her nails painted exactly as she requested.  When her guests arrived she looked like the little diva I know her to be all too well!

After each and every little girl got dressed up, hair styled perfectly and nails manicured to her specifications they posed for a group picture.  I mean, what’s cuter than a group of little girls all dolled up for a night out?  Or, in this case, a night in!

The group picture needed a fancy frame to be proudly displayed by every guest so, of course, there was a fun craft involved.  Each guest was given a wood picture frame and more pretty decorating options than they could handle!  They got serious about picture frame decorating and every girl went home with a keepsake photo in the frame they created – perfect!

Last came singing, cupcakes, lots of hugs goodbye and, just like that, the party was over.  Or almost.  My daughter had one special party extra – her big night ended with getting her ears pierced!  Not part of the party package but saved us the trip to the mall we had scheduled for the next day, so a win-win if you ask me!  After that was done, we packed up and headed home.  It was the perfect party for my now 8 year old daughter & the completely stress-free party I was looking for.  No stress, no mess for me to clean up, and the girls all had a blast!
