A little about Giggles: Greenville, SC

Giggles in Greenville was opened by Brandon Kimball and his wife, Caroline, after they experienced the convenience and professional childcare during a vacation in Wilmington, NC. They wondered why Greenville did not offer the same services.

“One of the things we liked most about the Giggles model when we first used the service in North Carolina was the flexibility in the pricing options,” said Caroline Kimball. “We loved the fact that we could buy hours in bulk and get our cost of childcare down to as low as $5 per hour. The low prices coupled with the amazing experience for our kids was the main reason we decided to franchise the model and open up the two Greenville locations.”

The Giggles Greenville SC location has been open for a couple of years now and has significantly helped many families. They’ve been open during teacher holidays, holidays where parents needed to work, and late nights when a parent needed childcare.

“This place is fantastic. I’m new to the area and needed part-time help with my twin toddlers at random times for school events and doctor’s appointments. The staff is phenomenal and my kids love going,” raved one mom in a review on the Giggles Facebook page.

The Pelham Road location is perfect for families coming out of the Five Forks or Eastside area, as it’s about 15 minutes from both places. It is located right off of the Pelham Road exit on 85 and in the same plaza as Earth Fare, several other restaurants, Massage Envy, nail salons, and Pet Supply Plus. Sidewall Pizza is a two-minute drive away. Built-in date night right there.

While you can register your child at the childcare center, it is much easier to do it online. Also, be sure to ask the family pediatrician for a copy of immunization records, as they are needed for registration.

Herdklotz Park: Kids Love to Visit Again and Again in Greenville, SC

Posted on | No Comments

Have you been to Herdklotz Park in Greenville? It’s such a beautiful park, is close to Paris Mountain, and gives you an unexpected view of the downtown Greenville skyline. With two large playgrounds, unique climbing structures, and two multi-purpose athletic fields, this park has it all.

If there’s one thing my child loves, it’s heading to the park and playing on the playground. And to be honest—I love the opportunity for her to be outside and get some energy out. Herdklotz Park is a perfect place for her to play and run around.

To read more park reviews see our Kidding Around Greenville Parks page.

Herdklotz Park
Large Playground at Herdklotz Park

History of Herdklotz Park

First, a little history. Herdklotz Park is named for former county councilman, Dick Herdklotz, because of his desire to advance outdoor recreation in the Greenville area. So, even if the name is hard to remember, the sentiment behind it is very much appreciated. The location of this beautiful park is that of the former Hopewell Hospital, built in 1930 to treat patients with tuberculosis. The original building burned down one morning in 2002, but you can still walk by one remaining building and read about its history.

This spacious county park sits on 17 acres at the base of Paris Mountain. You will find very large athletic fields on both sides of the playground.  Games and team practice are often going on, but if you’re lucky enough to find the fields open, they’re perfect for running and playing.

Herdklotz boasts one of the few county parks that has a sand volleyball court and horseshoe pits (you furnish the horseshoes). The pavilion shelter is up on the hill overlooking the park and is a lovely spot for a gathering (be sure to reserve your time in advance!). Bathrooms are just on the other side of the pavilion. And the panoramic view of downtown Greenville can be seen from the top of the hill.

Toddler Playground at Herdklotz Park

The playgrounds at Herdklotz

The Herdklotz Park playgrounds are some of the best playgrounds in Greenville (see our list of the 5 best playgrounds in Greenville for even more choices).  The larger playground has a three-story tower for climbing. There are 6 slides, a climbing wall, a large swing set and a kid favorite—the sliding handle.  Because it’s so large and challenging, this is definitely the place for older children or younger ones who are good at climbing.

The smaller playground is fenced in and has its own covered pavilion with a few picnic tables (perfect for a mid-visit snack!). This smaller playground is where you’ll find the swings for toddlers and the much smaller playset geared toward the little ones.

Between the two playgrounds is a .545 walking trail, perfect for exercising while the children play. You can see the larger playground no matter where you are on the path. If you want to take the children on a walk with you, there is a learning path with signs and many teaching opportunities.

Salsa Dancing: Experience The Vibes Of South Beach This Summer in Greenville, SC

Posted on | No Comments

Are you looking for a place to salsa dance in Greenville, SC? If you love salsa dancing and wish you could escape to the exotic nightlife of South Florida, you can for just the cost of a babysitter for a few hours right here in Greenville! Whether you are looking for an escape from the kids in the form of a fun date night or a family date night including the kids– we’ve got a free event you have to check out: Salsa at Sunset.

About Greenville’s Salsa at Sunset

The Salsa at Sunset event sponsored by Upstate International & Pura Alegria dance company will get you as close as you’re going to get to Calle Ocho in Miami without traveling for half a day.

This free event is held during the summer months once a month in June, July, and August. An hour-long complimentary salsa dance lesson starts at 6:15 pm and the live music starts at 7 pm plays until 10 pm. In 2021, the event moved from the plaza in front of the Peace Center to the NEW Camperdown Plaza and it’s awesome. The space is beautiful and you can grab cookies from Insomnia or ice cream at Jeni’s right there. So fun.

If there were a way to somehow import the smell of ocean air and fill the airspace in front of the Peace Center with it, you’d never know that you were in the foothills of South Carolina and not Miami.

Four Waterslides and a Spray Pad for Summer Fun at Otter Creek in Greenville, SC

Posted on | 3 Comments

Has your family been to Otter Creek in Greenville, SC? As one of three waterparks operated by Greenville County Recreation, Otter Creek has multiple waterslides, a huge sprayer pad, and a beach access pool to splish and splash around with your kids. It is the perfect waterpark for your family to cool off from the humid southern heat or lounge by the pool under the gigantic sun shade umbrellas. Your family can spend a day of fun in the sun at a waterpark, without ever having to leave Greenville!

Otter Creek Waterpark in Greenville, SC

A special thanks to Greenville County Recreation for providing us with media passes to Otter Creek to help write our review!

What Otter Creek Has to Offer

Waterslides

Otter Creek has four awesome water slides in total. The 32 ft tall tower houses three of the slides, including two body slides and a tube slide. The body slides require you to be 42” or taller to enjoy, but children shorter than 42” can enjoy the tube slides with an adult.

The green body slide has lots of twists and turns, which I thought was exciting and not too intense. This slide goes fast but not too fast, so even younger kids can enjoy it. The white slide, however, is for the more adventurous at heart. It features a steep drop at the beginning that will have you slightly hovering during takeoff (as my husband says) and is pretty fast. The blue tube slide has inflatables, and younger children can ride with their parents down the 100-yard slide.

There is also an adorable kiddy slide that will allow younger children a taste of what a water slide is like. The slide is very wide so parents can go down with their children, or multiple children can slide down together into the pool below.

Beach Entry Leisure pool

The beach entry pool is wonderful and baby-friendly! It is large enough so that you can have some space between you and those around you, which is nice considering how packed the waterpark can get a prime time. There is a shallow area for small children to practice their swimming skills, and a slightly deeper area if you’re wanting to go for a swim yourself.  Surrounding the pool are lots of lounge chairs, so you can find a spot to lay out a towel before going in and out of the pool. There are also a dozen or so extra-large umbrellas that provide ample shade, but be sure to get to the waterpark early to secure a spot.

Splash Pad

The splash pad was the highlight of my three-year-old daughter’s waterpark adventure, and I enjoyed it myself. The 2,400 square foot splash pad has several sprayers, a bucket dump, and geysers that my 8-month-old enjoyed sticking her toes in. The splash pad is a great size, and it is something everyone can enjoy to cool off from the heat, even if you are just enjoying the lounge chairs instead of a swim.

Party Hut Rentals

Otter Creek offers four party hut rentals located at the back of the park closer to concessions so your birthday celebration can be intimate when you want it to be. Party packages are for groups of 10 or more and include waterpark admission, a pizza and cake meal with beverages, a party hostess, and more. The party huts can be rented for $22 per person for 2 hours of fun! You can reserve party hut time slots for the day you need, just make sure to book ahead of time. And just an FYI, you can also rent the entire waterpark!

Before Going Into The Park

Tickets

Otter Creek offers affordable ticket prices that include reentry if you need to leave for a few minutes to have a picnic or grab something from your car. Tickets for adults and kids over 42 inches are $13.00 while anyone under 42 inches is $9.50. Children 2 years old and under are free! Just be aware that if you purchase your tickets online, they are all $13.00 because of the inability to check height beforehand.  You can also purchase an individual waterpark season pass, including the Rec’N Crew Annual Pass which allows you to visit all three parks for the summer season.

What to Bring

Of course, bring towels and your swimsuit, but make sure to bring lots of sunscreen to avoid those pesky sunburns. Water shoes or sandals are a must so that you and your kids can easily travel from the water areas to concessions or your lounge chair. The ground gets HOT! If your child is under 42”, they will be required to wear a lifejacket, so bring your own or borrow one from the waterpark. Non-potty trained kids will also need a swim diaper that is fitted and snug. Lockers are available if you would like to store anything valuable while out for a swim.

Concessions Offered

Otter Creek does have limited concessions to purchase, with treats like ice cream and freeze pops available (only 30 cents per freeze pop!). They also have pizza, soda, water, chips, and a few other simple foods. You can purchase a whole pizza for $17. If you are looking for something more satiating, I recommend bringing a cooler with water and lunch with you and leaving it in the car ( you will not be allowed to bring it inside.) You can go have a picnic lunch and come back afterward for more water time.

Parking

There is deceivingly a lot of parking ( that I didn’t notice until I was waiting at the top of the water slide). The main lot is located off Darby Road, and it gets full quickly, but drive up past the fork and you will find additional parking. If you are lucky, you may even find a spot in the shade!
