Pick One of These Spots Next Time You Need to Study in Greenville, SC

Posted on |

Need someplace to study outside the house? Luckily there are plenty of places to study in Greenville, SC that are perfect for teens, homeschool families, and really…anyone. And we have a list of ideas for you!

Homework.

That just sent a shudder up your spine, didn’t it?

Even when it’s not yours to do, it can make you miserable. Sometimes a change of scenery can help with getting those brain waves flowing. We asked our readers where they like to study, and they had tons of great suggestions. We also threw some suggestions that can also be used for homeschooling families who need to get away from home or freelance remote workers who need an inspiring spot to get work done.

Good Study And Work Spots in Greenville, SC

Local Coffee Shops

These were popular with our readers, and fortunately, there’s no shortage of them in Greenville.

Methodical Coffee
With three very different locations, Greenville’s Methodical Coffee is far from a cookie-cutter corporate coffee chain. Instead, locally roasted beans and sourced ingredients for their menu have made them a favorite with locals.

Junto Coffee
Taylors Mill is now home to Junto Coffee. This spacious coffee shop offers everything you need in a good study spot. The tables and chairs are spread out, and they offer a plethora of indoor and outdoor seating options.

Scändi Tiny Coffee
This makes for a great study spot, in my opinion. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there at the grand opening, and you can read all about it in our review. Plenty of outdoor seating makes it easy to find a spot to settle into that homework.

Coffee Underground
This coffee shop, hidden away in a basement of a downtown business, is a perfect place to hide from all the noise and chaos of the street. They serve coffee, food, and even wine if you are inclined to sip while you study.

I love the Coffee Underground because of how private and quiet it is. I get a lot done because there are not many distractions! I also like Junto Coffee because of how open it is and I can find my own little corner there as well

Adriana
Flying Fox at Cartwright Food Hall

There are lots more local coffee shops in Greenville. Find one close to you!

The upstairs section of the Cartwright Food Hall in Greer would be a great place to study.

National Chain Coffee Shops

Starbucks
Starbucks locations with outdoor seating are a great way to escape the noise of the coffee shop. Plus, if you are a rewards member, bottomless cups of hot and iced coffee are a perk.

Dunkin’ Donuts
With over a dozen Dunkin’ Donuts locations locally, these are always a nearby option.

Panera
Panera is a great place to grab a snack while homework gets done. Woodruff Road’s location has a generous outdoor seating area, perfect for finding a quiet corner to get things done.

Libraries

Libraries are a traditional study favorite. Some locations even have little study rooms where you can find peace.

The Five Forks branch in Simpsonville is one of our favorites – it has plenty of spots to study, including an outdoor play area.

My local library. I prefer it to Panera or something because I’m not tempted to buy anything. And its quiet.:)

Parks To Get Some Work Done At In Greenville, SC

Greenville has no shortage of parks and green spaces where you can find a little peace. Chances are there’s one just around the corner from you. Our Guide to Greenville County Parks can help you see what parks are nearby.

Lake Robinson
2544 Mays Bridge Road, Greer SC 29651
This lake is a quiet place with picnic shelters, perfect for studying.

Falls Park
There are tables set up under the main street along the river, plus multiple other places to spread out and get school work done.

Study Spot Alternatives
One reader had a creative way to kill two birds with one stone!

In the car waiting for the older sibling’s school to release. I feel like I’m wasting away in the carline!!

Karyn

Bookstores like Barnes and Noble were mentioned by readers also. Find a quiet corner to get things done. You can even grab a drink and snack inside since most have coffee shops inside them.

Barnes and Noble, it’s cozy to me

Carole

Several readers mentioned College Campuses. However, you don’t have to be a student there to enjoy the peaceful lake at Furman.

Furman University library. Beautiful and great study rooms

Heather

Cooper Library at Clemson. It’s quiet, has wifi, has Starbucks.

Emily

Community centers like The YMCA, The Kroc Center, and others are great places to find a quiet corner to study.

The Caine Halter YMCA has plenty of tables in the concourse for doing schoolwork. Even a small outdoor patio on the second floor is quiet and, in cooler months, makes the perfect place to study, read, or take a break.

Study Spot Essentials

Finding the perfect spot to study is essential. But, once you have that, consider these other study essentials:

  • noise canceling headphones
  • water to drink
  • snack
  • sharpened pencils and paper for notes

Making sure you have everything you’ll need before you get started will help you stay focused.

7 Weeknight Outings for Teens to Try This School Year

Posted on |

Have a few hours after school but unsure how to spend them? Local teen Brylan put together this list of school night outings that are perfect for teens. Whether you have one night without homework or many free evenings, you’ll find an idea or two that just might be exactly what you need this school year!

Also, check out our huge list of things to do with teens and our list of gift ideas for teens!

I’m completely able to relate to the desire to get out of the house and do something, but have little to no options for reasonable activities that will have me back home and in bed so I can get a full eight hours of sleep. Believe it or not, there are indeed some fun things you can do with friends or alone on a school night.

Weeknight Things to Do for Teens

Swing Dancing at Upstate Swing

One of my personal favorites, every Wednesday night Upstate Swing hosts a swing dancing lesson from 7 pm – 8 pm and then has a night of dancing from 8 pm – 10 pm. It’s a great way to meet more people and such a fun way to set the tone for the rest of the week! Here’s the Upstate Swing link with details.

Hit the mall

Haywood Mall closes at 9 pm, ensuring that you’ll be back at home at a reasonable time. Maybe it’s just me, but shopping helps me clear my head even if I don’t purchase anything.

Get some outdoor time at a local park

Having an hour or so of exercise in places like Cleveland Park will help you clear your mind and feel great before enduring school the next day. The Swamp Rabbit Trail runs through Cleveland Park to Downtown Greenville.

Get a part-time job

If you find yourself nearly dying of boredom on a regular basis consider applying for a part-time job around town to fill up your schedule and make some extra money! See my article on part-time jobs for teens in Greenville here.

Visit a school athletic event

Check the news for the upcoming sports events and support your school! Most school calendars include athletic games so check your school, or visit another school.

Spare Time Entertainment

This arcade/bowling alley/laser tag/escape room haven is super fun for students! Grab some friends and visit! Keep in mind that you have to book an escape room ahead of time.

Go Climbing

There are several places in Greenville where you can harness up and go indoor rock climbing. It’s a great way to get your body moving so you can get a good night’s sleep or focus on homework. Some gyms even offer high school student climb nights. Check out these indoor climbing gyms near Greenville.

Climb@Blue Ridge in Taylors, SC

While the options for school night activities are few and far between, there are some reasonable mid-week activities that will help you get your mind off school for just long enough to feel refreshed and like you have a life outside of school and homework. If you find a night of freedom, take a step back from the chaos and enjoy an evening without stress. You never know when you’ll get another one.

Do you have a favorite weeknight activity? Share it with us in the comments!

Disc Golf is a Perfect Fall Family Activity

Posted on |

Are you curious about the disc golf signs you see posted at local parks? If so, we are here today to tell you all about disc golf in Spartanburg and disc golf in Greenville. If you are looking for a fun outdoor family activity, we’ve got all you need to know about playing disc golf in the Upstate.

disc golf at Spartanburg parks
Tyger River Park

Looking for even more fun things to do outside? Check out our Ultimate Guide to Outdoor Activities.

What is Disc Golf?

Disc golf (also known as frisbee golf) is an outdoor sport involving plastic discs, metal baskets, and an outdoor course. Players try to throw their discs into the metal baskets in the least amount of throws possible. For instance, whoever ends up with the lowest number of throws is the winner. Basically, disc golf follows the rules of golf.

Why Disc Golf is a Great Family Activity

Disc golf is a great family activity because it is a sport that families can play and enjoy together! It is also an easy way to encourage your family to be healthy as the game requires walking and other physical efforts. Plus, it can only be played outdoors – making it a unique way to get some Vitamin D.

My family of four includes two adults, a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old. We like to play disc golf because it is something we can play together, and it gets us out of the house. My 4-year-old is not quite old enough to play the game, but she still benefits from exploring nature while we move from one hole to the next on the disc golf course. While we play, she looks for leaves, sticks, and bugs.

Meanwhile, my 7-year-old is learning how to play the game and not feel defeated when it takes him more throws to land his disc in the basket than his parents. Since it is a game where you must wait your turn, it opens up many teachable moments and leaves room for plenty of conversations. We talk and joke as we walk from hole to hole and as we wait for our turns.

Disc Golf

Where You Can Play Disc Golf in Greenville and Spartanburg?

Greenville and Spartanburg have many places to play disc golf. Even better – you can play disc golf for free at most of these parks! As long as you have some discs on hand and see a course, you can play.

Where to play disc golf in Greenville:

Where to play disc golf in Spartanburg:

You can find out specifics at Disc Golf Course Review by searching for the course location.

My family enjoys playing disc golf at Tyger River Park the best. It is a very family-friendly course with the first nine holes being shaded, and we only play the first nine holes rather than all 18 holes. This means it does not take as much time, which is important when you are playing with children. Plus, it is also at a park that is familiar to us.

Holmes Park

Where You Can Purchase Disc Golf Supplies

One of the best reasons to play disc golf as a family is because it is budget-friendly. As long as you have the basic disc golf supplies (i.e., discs), you don’t have to spend any more money! However, disc golf should be played with disc golf discs – not standard frisbees. Disc golf discs are designed for the sport and to fit into the baskets.

Just like the game of golf has many different types of putters, disc golf has many different types of discs. But, beginners only need a starter set that includes a driver, mid-range, and a putter. For the first few times, you really only need a driver disc.

Thankfully, you can buy these at local sports stores such as Academy and Dick’s. We’ve had a lot of luck finding used discs in excellent condition at Play It Again Sports in Spartanburg.

Things to Remember

If you are new to disc golf, here are some things you need to know:

  • Have a bag that can hold water, bug spray, and discs.
  • Don’t forget to wear sunscreen.
  • Always stand behind the person throwing the disc.
  • Disc golf follows basic golf etiquette (such as waiting your turn and allowing faster teams to play through).

Has your family played disc golf? What is your favorite disc golf course in Spartanburg? Let us know in the comments!

10 Alternative Drive Thru’s That Aren’t Your Typical Fast Food

Posted on | 6 Comments

🥗Wanting a healthy drive-thru in Greenville, SC? Here is a list of 10 drive-thrus or quick pickup in Greenville with healthier options!

Drive thru and pick up meals near Greenville, SC

Sometimes a quick dinner is a must, but a less-than-healthy fast food chain isn’t what you want to feed your family.

Here is a handy list of healthier restaurants near Greenville, SC, to head to the next time you need a fast, yet healthy, meal for your family.

Tropical Grill

Healthy Drive-Thru Options Near Greenville, SC

Tropical Grille

While currently only the Woodruff Road and Mauldin locations of Tropical Grille have a drive-thru, at around $34 for a family meal, it’s a huge hit and a local business to boot. They offer Cuban-inspired meals, including yellow rice, chicken, Cuban sandwiches, and the most delicious sauces ever! Their South of the Border is so delicious, with a combination of guacamole, sour cream, salsa, chicken, yellow rice, tomatoes, and delicious garlic sauce. Yum!

Panera Bread

While not all Panera Bread locations have a drive-thru, the Haywood Mall location, the Pelham Road location, and the Greer location all have a drive-thru. The majority of their additional locations have drive-thrus as well. Their menu items include paninis, soups, and salads at Panera Bread, with healthy options for sides like fresh fruit. Be sure to sign up for their rewards program too!

Chicken Salad Chick

Chicken Salad Chick has a location off Pelham, another Augusta (no drive-thru), and another off Garlington near Woodruff Rd. There is also an Easley location. They have various salads, soups, and sandwiches with, you guessed it, chicken salad. They offer comfort foods that are fresh and healthy.

Chicken Salad Chick makes their meals from scratch, so you do not have to worry about your food coming from a little premade bag. Plus, their Little Chicks menu for kids will give your children more variety than the traditional chicken nuggets and fries you get from a fast food place.

McAlister’s Deli

You can order your food online and pick up from the drive-thru window at McAlister’s Deli in Greer on Wade Hampton Blvd. They have a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads, and a few options for a loaded baked potato (yum!).

Order Ahead/Pickup Healthier Options

Farm Fresh Fast

One of the most popular fast food places in the area, Farm Fresh Fast, has amazingly healthy and delicious meals to go. They have some delicious options like the Korean BBQ Chicken Quesadilla and the Crispy Thai Pork Wrap. They even had a vegan plant-based menu with several options. You can order online and pick up a number of healthy options at their Simpsonville location (Greenville location is closed).

Clean Eatz

This is the place for super healthy eating out. Located off of Pelham Road, you can order ahead at Clean Eatz and pick up super healthy and tasty meals. Clean Eatz meals are very clean, with fresh vegetables, delicious protein portions, grilled chicken, and more. They offer burgers, wraps, flatbreads, smoothies, and protein-rich options. They also have meal plans.

Sun Belly Cafe

Sun Belly Cafe is celebrated for its commitment to fresh, seasonal meals made with locally sourced ingredients and a strong focus on vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free items. Kids will love trying out their kid-friendly snack options, and it will let you squeeze in that plant-based meal day with food that you know your kids will eat.

Viva Chicken

Viva Chicken is a fast-casual Peruvian rotisserie chicken restaurant, and their chicken is so good! They are known for their signature Pollo a la Brasa, which my kids seem to love. They have family-style meals starting around $26 that come with three sides and an entree to share.

Smoothies: Healthy Drive-Thru Options for Drinks

Smoothie King

If liquid nutrition hits the spot or it’s just too hot for anything else, Smoothie King is an awesome choice, and you don’t need to leave your car. Smoothies are an insidious way to hide fruits and veggies in your kids’ diet and have them ask for more! You can make your smoothie even healthier by asking for no added sugar in your fruit smoothies. Go higher calories and add some protein to round it out for a meal. Locations off Woodruff Road, Pleasantburg (next to Fresh Market), Greer, Simpsonville, Easley, and Clemson!

Liquid Highway

So you need caffeine, and the kids need a snack? Try a local coffee place like Liquid Highway. We like their Green Goddess smoothies, and profits go towards their foundation.

Starbucks

Alright, for those times when more artisanal coffee houses can’t be found, Starbucks offers a decent amount of snacks that do not include fries but do include a quad espresso for you, along with a rewards program.

Any other healthy drive-thru options we missed? Please let us know in the comments!
