Fall Fun for the Whole Family at Strawberry Hill

Posted on |

If you’re looking for something fun to do with your family this fall in the Greenville-Spartanburg area, Strawberry Hill Farm needs to be on your list. In fact, it should probably be on your bucket list every year.

Strawberry Hill and Cooley Farms have been family-owned and operated since 1947, and they truly understand and value families. With a cafe, ice cream shop, and produce stand of fresh pumpkins, jellies, jams, corn, and more, you’ll find plenty to satisfy your cravings. Plus, the hay ride and corn maze provide more than enough entertainment and memory-making for a couple of hours.

We visited one late morning in September and quickly discovered we weren’t the only ones who found this local gem. We wandered around the Shed, took plenty of photos, and went on the hay ride. If you’re thinking of visiting Strawberry Hill Cooley Farms, I’ve compiled lots of info and details for you below, including some extra tips before you go.

Strawberry Hill Farm Pumpkins

The Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor at Strawberry Hill

While we personally didn’t visit the cafe or ice cream parlor during our trip, it was PACKED and had a long line out front. Clearly, it is popular with families around the Upstate. The ice cream parlor has 32 flavors of freshly churned ice cream made with fruit straight from the farm. The cafe serves breakfast and lunch and has a variety of items to choose from. Breakfast is served until 10:30 am.

The Shed at Strawberry Hill

We parked at the Shed, and our toddler was immediately excited about all the pumpkins she could see from the car. Strawberry Hill has a large variety of pumpkins in all shapes, colors, and sizes to choose from. Not to mention their large supply of jellies, jams, boiled peanuts, and other snacks. They even had 3 flavors of slushies while we were there: Apple, Blackberry, and Peach. We grabbed a Peach Slushie to enjoy on our hay ride. It was delicious!

Strawberry Hill Shed in Chesnee

If you wander outside of the Shed covering, you’ll discover more pumpkins and some other fun things to bide your time. You’ll find a couple of tractors, a swing, and stacks of hay bales and pumpkins that are styled for the perfect fall photo op.

The Hay Ride at Strawberry Hill

If you want to go on one of the hay rides, purchase your tickets in the Shed. Each ticket includes a trip to the playground, opportunity to feed the big cows, visit some other farm animals, go down the GIANT slide, and access to the big jumping pillow. We weren’t really sure what to expect, but we’re glad we went on it!

Once you purchase your ticket, you’ll wait until your group is called, and then you’ll board the wagon. Don’t worry about getting itchy by sitting on bales of hay—Strawberry Hill has cleverly covered the hay bales in plastic for your comfort.

Strawberry Hill farm animals

The tractor and wagon will take you through Strawberry Hill’s property, giving you fun facts along the way. (Fun fact we learned: they plant their strawberries by hand every single year! This was mind-blowing to me because their strawberry field is massive).

Strawberry Hill play space on the hay ride

While on the hay ride, you’ll see cows and get the chance to feed them a little treat! Then, the tractor will drop you off at an exclusive area that’s only accessible for those who hop on the hay ride. You’ll find more farm animals to pet (Queen Victoria, the farm’s pig, was a big hit!), a sandbox, seesaws, a variety of games, several large slides, the pumpkin patch, and a giant Jumping Pillow!

Strawberry Hill in the fall

Once you and your kids are done playing, you can hop back on a wagon to head back to the Shed.

The Corn Maze at Strawberry Hill

Strawberry Hill has 3 corn mazes: two larger ones and one kiddie maze. The two larger corn mazes take 20-30 minutes to complete, and the kiddie maze takes about 20 minutes. While they have offered the maze during the evening in the past, they are not offering night mazes in 2023.

Does Your Family Love Hunting for Mice On Main in Greenville, SC?

Posted on | 2 Comments

Have you found the Mice on Main in Greenville, SC? Downtown Greenville’s little bronze mice are a familiar sight along Main Street. But have you seen all of them? KAG Writer, Shannon, shares her family’s search for the mice along with her tips and tricks for a successful hunt!

What are the Mice on Main in Downtown Greenville?

If you’ve noticed the little bronze statues of mice in Downtown Greenville, you’ve already seen some of the “Mice on Main.” There are 9 in total, and a list of free clues to help your find them all, as you enjoy being out and about in Downtown Greenville.

One Family’s Mice on Main Hunt

I grabbed my 15-month-old daughter, sister-in-law, and 5-year-old niece one morning recently, and told my niece we were going on a mouse hunt in downtown Greenville. I giggled a little watching her confused reaction but explained to her that we were going on a scavenger hunt to find bronze mice sculptures. She looked a little relieved after that explanation.

Mice on Main Clues

I printed a list of Mice on Main clues that I found online (I also had a backup list because I had heard that some of the clues may have changed during all of the downtown Greenville construction and renovations).

Start the Mice on Main Hunt

We started at the Hyatt and after a little searching, found the first mouse. My niece was pretty proud of herself for finding it.

Mice on Main

We wandered on down the street, criss-crossing here and there, to find the other 8 mice. Some of them were easy to find and others were really hard. We would look and look for some of them, and—because we love a good challenge—kept at it until we found them.

One of the mice even had a tiny sombrero on him.. it was super cute! (We went the day after Cinco de Mayo.)

Tips for Mice on Main

If you are planning on going on the mouse hunt downtown, my biggest hint is to print the scavenger hunt clues, but also—be open and willing to ask shopkeepers and restaurants for help if you need it. There were also some other locals out and about who caught on to what we were doing and were offering their help, as well.

Take the time to look at a map of the downtown area before you go. It will help you to know where the landmarks in the clues are.

Read Mice on Main: The Book before going on a hunt. It will give your children some background information on the mice. (P.S. You can check Mice on Main out from the Greenville Library or buy it from any of these stores.)

You may spot a mouse long before your kids do. If they are getting close to one, you can let them know that they are getting warmer or hotter to it… we played this little game with my niece once or twice… it just made her grin a little wider as she got “warmer”.

Mice on Main

Be sure to look up and down when searching for the mice. Most of them are on the ground or at least close to the ground… but there’s at least one that may stump you.

Bring a camera to take pictures of your children and the mice they find. It will give you a visual diary of your mouse hunt that you all can look over later.

You will need to cross some busy streets. Remind your children of the need to look both ways before crossing the street and wait for the walk signal. I know they already know those rules, but they will be excited about looking for mice and might forget them.

If you decide to offer a reward for finding some or all of the mice, make it something small. You can always head to the candy section at the Mast General Store or find something small at O.P. Taylor’s.

Wear comfortable shoes. You won’t be walking too much, but walking on concrete can be hard on your feet.

Have you taken your kids to search for the Mice On Main yet?

Single-Gendered Classrooms

One of the unique aspects of the Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School is that all classes are single-gendered. The staff at St. Joseph’s want children to be confident in who they are, particularly in the school building and the community. During the middle school years, there’s rapid discovery, growth, and questioning. Single-gendered classrooms allow for a more tailored approach to teaching and learning, as teachers can address the specific needs and learning styles of boys and girls separately. This approach has been shown to increase confidence and academic growth in students, as they are able to focus on their own learning without distractions or pressures from the opposite gender.

Separate Sixth-Grade Wing

The Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville, SC is housed in a separate wing of the school, providing a unique and focused learning environment for students. This allows for a sense of independence and ownership over their learning experience, while still being a part of the larger school community. The wing includes classrooms, lockers, and a common area. This separation also helps to ease the transition from elementary to middle school for students, as they have their own space to navigate and grow in.

Small Class Sizes

One of the standout features of the Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School is the small class sizes and individualized attention that students receive. With class sizes generally capping at 22 students, teachers are able to provide personalized instruction and support to each student. This allows for a more tailored learning experience and helps students to reach their full potential. Additionally, the close-knit community at St. Joseph’s fosters a supportive environment where students feel valued and encouraged to succeed.

Team Mentality for Both Students and Teachers

One of the standout features of the Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School is the team mentality that is fostered among both teachers and students. It’s the secret sauce of the school. There’s a strong love of collaboration among the teachers. And there is a dedicated team of teachers within the Sixth Grade Academy. All of the sixth grade teachers know all of the students. This helps to ensure that no student runs under the radar. Teachers work collaboratively to plan lessons and activities that are engaging and challenging for students, while also providing individualized support when needed. Students are encouraged to work together and support each other in their learning, creating a sense of community and belonging within the Academy. This team mentality helps to create a positive and supportive learning environment for all involved.

Additionally, the flexible schedule allows for more time to be spent on subjects that students may struggle with, ensuring that they have a strong foundation for future academic success. There’s even a well-loved class called Foundations that exists to help students with executive functioning, reading, and more. There’s lots of room for flexibility in this class alone to address any issues or situations that need more attention.

Virtue Education & Community Involvement

Each quarter, St. Joseph’s focuses on two Catholic virtues: Fortitude, Perseverance, Courage, Self-Disipline,  Compassion, Loyalty, Prudence, Responsibility, and Faith. The school tries to incorporate these virtues into many of the lessons throughout the year. Community members are invited to visit and share how these virtues have played a role in their lives. Members of the police department, nurses, priests, servicemen, and even Pearle Harris have spoken to students. Each quarter, students work on an altruism project where they choose a way to help others either in the immediate community or somewhere in the world. In 2021, for example, students works with Set Free Alliance and raised funds to sponsor a well for a village in Africa.

Overall, the Sixth Grade Academy at St. Joseph’s Catholic School offers a unique and effective approach to education that sets students up for success in their academic and personal lives. Admission season opens in early October, but St. Joseph’s offers rolling admissions, as well. So if you’re interested in attending, be sure to apply as soon as possible to secure your spot.

Hotel Hartness History

Tom Hartness purchased the Pepsi-Cola Bottling rights in Greenville, SC in 1940, and over the next 70 years, the Hartness company evolved as a total packaging solutions provider with over 100 patents. Tom’s son, Pat, grew up in the business and eventually took over, while his son, Sean, became a senior executive. After a decades-long run of successful business ventures, the family sold Hartness International in 2009.

Pat acquired the land where the Hartness community and Hotel Hartness are located. It’s a total of 449 acres and has rolling pastures, lakes, creeks, and lush forests.

Not only did the family business once take place on the land, but Pat and his wife, Mary Lou, lived on an estate on it as well. Their beloved homestead welcomed friends and family through weddings, holiday celebrations, charitable events, and family gatherings. The former Hartness home has been reimagined into Hotel Hartness, and as you walk through the hotel, you’re sure to get a sense of family history and pride.
