Why Asbury Hills Summer Camp Might Be the Reset Your Child Needs This Summer

Posted on |

“How are you?”

If you’re like most of us, the answer is usually, “Good… just busy.”

Busy has become the norm. Between school, sports, homework, youth group, practices, and family schedules, our kids are moving just as fast as we are. Their calendars are full — but meaningful connection? Deep friendships? Space to breathe? That can be harder to find.

That’s one of the reasons so many Upstate families look to Asbury Hills Summer Camps each year.

Nestled in the mountains of South Carolina in Cleveland, SC, Asbury Hills offers overnight summer camps for kids ages 7–17 from May 31 through July 31. And while the activities are exciting, what truly sets this camp apart is the intentional space it creates for kids to unplug, build confidence, and grow in their faith.

A Week Without the Noise

At Asbury Hills, something rare happens.

Phones are set aside. Notifications disappear. The pressure to keep up fades. Camper’s step into a week where the focus shifts from performance to presence.

Instead of screens, there’s canoeing on the lake.
Instead of scrolling, there’s creek hiking.
Instead of rushing, there’s unhurried conversation in cabins after lights out.

Research shows that meaningful friendships require hours — sometimes hundreds — of shared experiences. At camp, kids spend over 120 hours together in one week. That kind of time creates space for real connection.

Some campers arrive knowing no one. Others come with friends. All leave having built deeper community than they imagined possible.

Adventure That Builds Confidence

Campers have opportunities to try:

  • Rock climbing
  • Giant swing
  • Water slides
  • Canoeing
  • Archery
  • Creek hiking
  • Alpine Tower
  • And more outdoor adventures

But it’s more than just activities. It’s the moment a child rings the bell at the top of the climbing tower. The first time they step off the giant swing. The courage it takes to try something new. Each experience builds confidence — not because they were the best at it, but because they were brave enough to try.

Growing Closer to God

Faith is woven into the rhythm of camp life at Asbury Hills.

Through worship, small group discussions, cabin devotions, and quiet moments in the beauty of the mountains, campers are encouraged to deepen their relationship with Christ in a way that feels authentic and personal.

In a world that constantly demands more, camp creates space for kids to rest in who they are — and whose they are.

Many families share that their children come home not just sun-kissed and tired, but steadier. More confident. More grounded. More aware of God’s presence in their lives.

More Than a Break — A Reset

Summer doesn’t have to be just another packed schedule. It can be a reset.

A week to unplug.
A week to try new things.
A week to build friendships that last beyond the season.
A week to grow in confidence and grow closer to God.

If your child needs space to breathe, to belong, and to be reminded of who they are, Asbury Hills might be exactly what this summer needs.

Where to Find the Oconee Bell this Spring

Posted on | 1 Comment

Have you seen the Oconee Bell? Spring is the perfect time to spot one of the rarest wildflowers in the world. It doesn’t bloom in many places, but Devils Fork State Park is one of the few places it does.

About the Oconee Bell

The Oconee Bell is only found in a few locations in the southern Appalachian Mountains. It thrives in moist, wooded areas along the streams of Georgia, North, and South Carolina. The tiny flowers are one of the first to bloom in the Upstate and attract quite the crowd to this state park better known for summer swimming and camping.

The sides of the stream bed are blanketed in waxy, red-tinged leaves, and the small white flowers are only visible upon a closer look. Had we not traveled to Devils Fork State Park specifically to see this delicate wildflower, we might have hiked right past it.

The flower has a very limited range in the wild, so the appearance of this native wildflower is cause for celebration. Every year, Devils Fork State Park puts on the Oconee Bell Nature Walk. If you can’t make the ranger-guided walk, you can still see the Oconee Bell blooming. The flower usually blooms from mid-March to early April, and the Oconee Bell Nature Trail takes you along a dozen colonies of this unique wildflower.

You can also see the flowers at Bell Fest, an annual festival dedicated to the rare wildflower that also has lots of great local vendors. In 2026, the date is Saturday, March 21st from 10 am – 3 pm. The festival is free with park entry.

The Oconee Bell Nature Trail

The Oconee Bell Nature Trail is an easy 1.5-mile loop that takes hikers through an oak-hickory forest, past a small pond full of American toads, and alongside the creek that is home to the elusive Oconee Bell. In addition to the rare flower, dozens of other plants and trees identified by wooden markers and several small cascades on the creek add to the list of year-round attractions.

If you’re headed to Devils Fork to hike the Oconee Bell trail, just follow signs to the Ranger Station. A quick stop there for a map or restrooms, and then it’s just a matter of crossing to the other side of the parking lot to the trailhead. The parking lot is on the southeast corner of Lake Jocassee, and the scenic views of the lake, Double Springs Island, and the swimming and picnic area on the southwest shore are stunning.

Bring a picnic to eat on the lake, or upon finishing your hike, circle around to Buckeye Drive where you’ll find picnic shelters and a playground.

In any case, make sure you practice what the park naturalist terms “belly botany”. To get an up-close look at the low-lying flowers you’ll have to get close to the ground. There are several locations where the colonies are right on the trail, so it’s relatively easy for all the kids (and adults) in your group to get a good look at the Bell. Remember, for your safety and the protection of the flowers, please stay on the trail!

It’s Tulip U-Pick Season at Thompson Family Farms (2026)

Posted on |

Thompson Family Farms in Campobello, SC, has so many opportunities to pick your own. Picking blooming flowers is delightful, and Thompson Family Farms is one of only a couple of farms near the Upstate that offer u-pick tulips. Over 130,000 of them! What a win!

We adore this farm because it is well-maintained, it is run efficiently, and the view of Hogback Mountain is perfect for photos with my kids. Everything we have picked has been high quality, plus it is a wonderful time exploring the beautiful farm.

Thompson Family Farms opens March 12th, 2026, for their spring season!

Offered in March: U-pick Tulips at Thompson Family Farms

As some of the first pops of color to emerge from the ground, tulips are a welcome sign that spring is here. Fresh-picked tulips make excellent gifts, centerpieces, and decor. Plus, it is so much fun going out to a U-pick patch and selecting the flowers yourself. It’s pretty joyful.

Arriving at Thompson Family Farms for tulips in Campobello, SC

The flower patch at Thompson Family Farms is open seasonally in March and early April (though weather can affect hours, so follow their Facebook page). The length of time the patch is open depends on the weather and bloom time, and the season is very short, but it’s so worth it. It is stunning! U-pick will return March 12, 2026.

Child picking tulips: Thompson Family Farms in Campobello, SC

U-Pick Tulips in The Flower Patch at Thompson Family Farms

Tulips are synonymous with the cool, breezy weather of early Spring. You can u-pick from 25 varieties of tulips that are spread across 4 acres. They have multiple colors, including pink, red, yellow, white, and variegated orange/red, and more.

Be sure to stay on the paths when walking through the flowers. In addition, if you cut the flower, you buy it. Be sure it is the flower you want before taking your scissors to the stem.

The Thompson family recommends cutting the flowers at the length that you want, and we found cutting low on the stem to be best for us. Most importantly, be sure that you are only cutting what you want to take home, and be mindful of where you are stepping so that tulips still waiting to bloom do not get damaged.

Once you have all of the tulips you would like, you can head back to the tent to have them wrapped in bouquets. If you plan to pick a large number of tulips, I recommend bringing something sturdy like a box to take them home in, so they are safe from damage.

Tulips: Photo Opportunities at Thompson Family Farms

Other than the obvious photos of you and your children amongst the flowers, The Flower Patch also has a couple of lovely photography setups on the property. If you head to the far ends of the fields, you will find a red tractor set up with a rustic farm vibe of window panes and flower buckets that make for some adorable photos!

There is also a pallet-style backdrop with a chair and blooming flowers to take pictures with. The property itself is situated in a field that is surrounded by trees, so there are many opportunities to get that perfect spring picture.

Professional photographers are welcome to come to the farm during open hours to capture photos with their clients.

Price of Admission and U-Pick Tulips

Admission is $10 per person for ages 12 and older. Children under 11 and under are free to attend. If you want to participate in u-pick, Tulips are $1.25 per stem. Flowers will be wrapped in a bouquet for guests at checkout. The farm does take cash, card, and Venmo.

Please follow the farm’s guidance for cutting and watch your step to ensure that the other tulips are safe for other people to enjoy their u-pick experience.

For 2026, the farm will have honey and farm-grown popcorn for sale along with spring plants, including lavender, peony plants, petunias, and strawberry starters. You can also purchase hanging plants like Boston ferns and flower baskets.

Tips to Keep Your Flowers Fresh

Sara Thompson recommends making a fresh cut before putting your flowers in their water vase once you arrive home. You should then display your flowers out of direct sunlight. She also mentioned the fascinating fact that tulip stems continue to grow once placed in water, so they may appear to be longer after a few days in the vase. Be sure to change out your water regularly to elongate your bloom time. And most importantly, enjoy!

Key Things to Know Before Visiting Thompson Family Farms

  • There are no dogs allowed at The Flower Patch.
  • There is a porta-potty for emergencies, so be sure to take a potty break before arriving.

  • It can be muddy in the fields, so wear appropriate shoes.
  • The farm is accessible, but it can be bumpy because of the gravel parking lot. If you plan to bring a stroller, ones with wheels made for rough terrain are highly recommended. A soft body carrier for a baby may be easier.

Baby Goats = Pure Happiness at Split Creek Farm in Anderson, SC

Posted on | 1 Comment

Do you love baby goats? KAG’s Kristina Hernandez sure does. She visited local farm, Split Creek Farm in Anderson, SC, and got to spend some time with baby goats. You can head to Split Creek Farm and see goats, too. This farm offers tours, events, a farm store with delicious cheese, and more.

For more fun things to do during the spring, see our gigantic Spring Guide.

When you have the chance to play with baby goats, you play with baby goats. You get insanely happy. You wear a silly smile on your face for hours. And then your heart breaks a bit when you can’t take them home.

That’s what happened one morning when I visited Split Creek Farm, an award-winning goat farm in Anderson, SC. Time flew by as I got a tour from co-owner and goat-lover, Sandra. We saw mama goats who were about to have their kids, baby goats playing together, baby goats sleeping all piled up together, baby goats eating my pants, and tiny little baby goats training on bottle feeding.

I fell in love with a three-day-old little girl baby goat that had soft, black fur and let me hold her (ok, Sandra let me hold her). Seriously, this was blissful. It made me happy, which for me, is kind of hard to come by some days.

What Happens at Split Creek Farm

The stellar reputation of this farm precedes them. This farm has so many awards for their cheeses, goat milk products, and actual goats that they have a legitimate museum onsite to house all their trophies, ribbons, and plaques.

In 2022, they came in third place globally for their Feta Marinated in Olive Oil and first place in the United States. In 2017, they beat out every single American producer and farmer in the cheese category for their feta. And in 2010, they took home the Gold Medal at the World Championship of Cheese contest in Madison, WI, beating cheeses from France, Italy, and the U.S.

This little farm plays in the big leagues, and they are darn proud of it, as they should be. They’ve been providing grade-A goat milk for over 30 years, and their passion radiates from every aspect of the farm, from the little goat babies to end products of cheese, fudge, and yogurt.

You can purchase their products at the shop on the farm or online, or enjoy the cheeses at many Greenville restaurants such as The Anchorage, Farm Fresh Fast, Stella’s Southern Bistro, Passerelle, and a dozen others.

Adorable baby goat

Kidding Season

Spring is the farm’s busy season as kidding has begun. It’s a round-the-clock operation. As a mother, I understand nighttime feedings, little sleep, and running on fumes. Split Creek Farm estimates they have around 100 baby goats by the end of kidding season in April. These cute little animals need round-the-clock care and feeding every two hours for the first two days of their lives. They then need hands-on care as they learn to feed themselves from the bottle for the next few days.

This goes on for months! I snuck a peek into one of the employee-only rooms off the little shop at the farm. There were five or six pack ‘n plays all lined up. I had stumbled into the goat nursery. Unfortunately, no newborn goats were there but just imagining the care that these little guys and girls need when they are born is overwhelming. Sandra told me she has a similar setup at her house, as does her co-owner, Jessica Bell.

Whoa.

I asked Sandra if she sleeps, which was like asking a new mom the same question. You can guess the answer.

Can I See Baby Goats, Too?

Yes! Split Creek Farm is all about educating the public on what they do, how they treat their animals, what they produce, and how cool goats are. They have Adirondack chairs and benches all over the place for guests to come and hang out. They have a little shop that sells their goat cheeses, fudge, and milk, plus all kinds of other goodies like goat-stuffed animals, soap, and trinkets.

Baby goats, like baby humans, have a delicate immune system, so you can’t just frolic around and hold the little guys and girls. Families especially have to be careful since kids (the human kind) tend to carry around germs more than others (or so it seems). But they are welcome to come and check out the kids and see the other animals.

Don’t miss their Spring Means Babies festival on April 18, 2026 from 10 am – 3 pm. You’ll be able to see all the babies and shop from cool, local vendors.

Educational Tours at Split Creek Farm

The farm understands the importance of educating the public because it pertains directly to their survival. If the public is familiar with how the farm works, what they do, and why it’s important, the community will be more supportive, and that benefits everyone. For children especially, learning where food comes from in a fun environment is beneficial to their education and knowledge.

Split Creek Farm is not a huge farm with lots of volunteers and employees. In fact, there are less than ten people that work there. That shocked me because I observed a mere fraction of the work that was being done and it was a great deal, more than I would have thought a small number of people could pull off.

Playing with goats at Split Creek Farm

Play with goats and enjoy a free self-guided tour at Split Creek Farm in Anderson, SC!

The farm introduced a new, self-guided tour with plaques all around the farm that explain what they do, the different breeds of goats on the farm, and how milking works. It’s awesome and very educational. You can take the tour on Fridays and Saturdays when they are open for visiting hours.

Split Creek Farm tours

Goat Yoga at Split Creek Farm

As you may imagine, Split Creek Farm’s goat yoga sessions are insanely popular. They allow guests to bring their yoga mats out in the field with mama goats, who just love all the attention. The animals are gentle and just like to hang out and befriend whoever comes their way. Stay tuned to their Facebook page for dates.

“We probably do more playing with goats than actual yoga,” Sandra tells me.

Guests who come for goat yoga are also able to play with the baby goats (yay!), specifically the Nigerian dwarfs. These guys, oh my gosh, I can’t even write anything that accurately describes their energy. It’s totally different than the bigger mamas. The babies want to play with you and jump around and maybe eat your pants. I loved these guys, and if Sandra wasn’t with me, I probably would have jumped into their pen to play with them.

Why is goat yoga so popular?

“Because it just makes people happy,” said Sandra.

Goats 4 Goodness

Speaking of making people happy, Sandra recently founded a non-profit called Goats 4 Goodness, whose mission is to “Do Good Things” for goats and people. They have already partnered with Make-A-Wish Foundation to give kids a chance to play with goats or be a farmer for the day. Goats 4 Goodness also works with special needs kids, recognizing that goats are inherently playful, loving, and fun. They don’t judge anyone!

Using animals for therapy isn’t anything new, however, there aren’t many places, especially in this area of the country, that do it with goats. There’s something special about spending time with goats that can heal or help people let go of their immediate reality and enjoy moments of peace.

Sandra would know. She had a long and successful career in Washington, D.C. as the Deputy Chief of Police of U.S. Capitol Police and also worked at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center and as the Emergency Response Team Leader for FEMA. These are stressful jobs. She fell into destructive habits and went to rehab for several months. It was volunteering at Split Creek Farm that turned her life around. Now she wants to give back to the community the goodness and healing she has found working with goats. You can learn more at their website or Facebook page.

Tips on Visiting Split Creek Farm

You can go to Split Creek Farm to shop when the store is open (get the fudge, all of it), but visiting hours is only on Fridays and Saturdays. Times are below.

Just understand that this is a working farm and there is a lot that needs to be done. The volunteers and staff are awesome and can answer your questions, but they can’t take a couple of hours to walk you around. So watch your kids, follow the instructions on the signs, and wear proper clothes to deal with mud and dirt. No pets are allowed at the farm.

Also, if you or your children are battling a cold, come back when those sniffles are gone. Baby goats are susceptible to getting sick just like human babies and can’t afford to be exposed to illnesses early in life.

There are other animals to see like chickens, cats, and dogs. They roam and will come and check you out. If your kids are scared of unknown animals, prep them ahead of time. The border collie, Sam, will probably just want to play with them though, and throw his toy around.

Lastly, enjoy your time at the dairy farm. Life is stressful. Adulting is hard. Playing with baby goats is relaxing, fun, and truly blissful. Whether for five minutes or two hours, visiting Split Creek Farm should go on your #mustdo list this year. Don’t miss out on this joy.

Self-guided tours are available Friday and Saturday 10 am – 5 pm. The farm shop is open Monday-Saturday 10 am – 5 pm.

Clemson Park and Community Gardens Skatepark: Now Open in Clemson, SC!

Posted on |

If your kids (or teens!) love to skate, scooter, or ride bikes, there’s a brand-new spot in Clemson you’ll want to add to your list. The skatepark at Clemson Park and Community Gardens is officially open — and the excitement from the local community is real.

We spent some time at the new park to get the full story.

Clemson Park Skatepark

While parts of the overall park are still under construction, the skatepark and neighboring pump track are fully open and ready to ride. Here’s everything families need to know before you go.

Where Is Clemson Park and Community Gardens?

📍 Clemson Park and Community Gardens
114 Clemson Park Rd, Clemson, SC 29631

Parking at the Skatepark

The park is located behind Clemson United Methodist Church, and parking is easy and convenient.

  • Plenty of parking available
  • Located in the shared church parking lot
  • Just a short walk to the skatepark and pump track

No complicated entrances or long walks with gear — which parents will appreciate. If you enter through the chruch parking lot. just head to the back of the lot and you’ll see the park. If you enter via the Clemson Park entrance you will approach the ongoing construction. When we first approached this way, we wondered if we were in the right spot. We were. Simply drive around the construction entrance to reach the parking lot.

What’s Open Right Now?

Even though the full park isn’t finished yet, two major features are ready:

  • 🛹 Skatepark
  • 🚴 Pump track for bicycles

You’ll see ongoing landscaping work and a nearby construction zone that appears to be future facilities — restrooms and even a splash pad. Once those are complete, this is going to be an even bigger community destination.

For now, the skating action is in full swing and we loved it.

Inside the Skatepark

This is a beautiful facility, and skaters are already calling it one of their favorites.

The park includes:

  • A large bowl area
  • Park-style obstacles
  • Parking curbs for technical practice
  • A pole jam–style feature
  • A set of steps
  • A smooth spine feature
  • A manny pad for manuals and balance tricks
  • Rails and edges for grinding
  • Open areas that allow for smooth transitions

Skaters consistently mention how smooth the surface feels and how well the park “flows.” The layout makes it easy to link features together naturally.

Clemson Skatepark

All skill levels can enjoy the park. Beginners have space to practice, while more advanced skaters have plenty of technical features to challenge themselves.

Because skateparks are not abundant in the Upstate, this addition feels especially meaningful for local families and teens.

See For Yourself: 360° View of the Skatepark

The video below of the skatepark at Clemson Park allows you to experience the ride in 360°. Just click and drag to turn the camera and see the park while Chris skates.

Don’t Miss the Pump Track

Right next to the skatepark is a pump track designed for bicycles and scooters, adding even more fun to your visit.

Having both spaces side by side makes this park a fantastic option for families with kids at different ability levels and interests.

See for yourself: 360° View of the Pump Track

The video below of the pump track at Clemson Park allows you to experience the ride in 360°. Just click and drag to turn the camera and see the whole track while Chris rides!

Important Things to Know Before You Go

Since the surrounding facilities are still under construction, a little planning goes a long way.

No Restrooms (Yet)

There are currently no restroom facilities onsite.

Families should definitely plan ahead. We took a lunch break at Sunnyside Café (less than 10 minutes away — and delicious!) and used the facilities there. Until the future building is completed, be sure to build in a bathroom plan before you arrive.

Full Sun Exposure

The skatepark is in full sun, so come prepared:

  • Bring hats
  • Pack sunscreen
  • Bring plenty of water
  • Be mindful of hot concrete on summer days

There is very little shade at this time, so sunny afternoons will get warm quickly.

Safety First

All skating levels can enjoy this park, but:

  • Parents should keep a close eye on younger children
  • Skaters need to be aware of their surroundings
  • Watch for potential crashes or collisions

It’s a friendly, community-oriented environment, and everyone benefits when riders stay alert and respectful of one another.

Need Skate Gear?

At the skatepark, we bumped into the owner of Cruz Outdoors. Located just down the road from Clemson Park, this locally opened shop carries all kind of outdoor gear, including everything you need to skate. You’ll find them in the plaza with Moe Joe Coffee. 379 Old Greenville Highway, Clemson

A Growing Community Space

Butterfly mosaic Clemson Park

Even with construction happening nearby, the energy at Clemson Park and Community Gardens is welcoming and positive. It’s just as fun to sit and watch as it is to ride. Families gather, teens practice new tricks, and there’s a strong sense of excitement about what this space will become.

Once the landscaping is complete and the additional facilities open, this will be an even more beautiful and well-rounded spot for the Clemson community.

Skateparks aren’t common in the Upstate — and this one is already becoming a local favorite.

10 Upstate Hikes That Are Perfect for Teens

Posted on |

Are you looking for fun or adventurous hiking for teens in Greenville, SC? Here’s our list of great hikes in or near the Upstate! Some are challenging and some a bit more relaxed, but they all make for a great day with friends or family.

Plus, there are plenty of trails with gorgeous views that are perfect for the ‘gram. For even more hiking ideas, see our list of our favorite local hiking trails.

Fun and adventurous hikes near Greenville, SC

There are so many great hiking trails in or near the Greenville area that it’s truly hard to choose where to go. Luckily, the weather here can lend itself to hiking all year round for the most part. And that means a lot of weekends to take the teens out on adventures.

For other ideas of things to do with teens, see our Ultimate Teen Guide.

Tips for Hiking with Teens: Greenville, SC & WNC Trails

Let’s face it. Teenagers are sometimes known for their lapses in judgment. It’s crucial to be careful on trails at all times, especially around waterfalls and drop-off points. While getting out on a ledge or traversing slippery rocks can make for a stunning Instagram photo, it’s not worth a significant injury or worse. Use common sense and obey posted signs.

It’s also wise to bring enough food, snacks, and water during a hike, whether you intend to eat lunch or not, especially during the hotter months. Some of the trails are strenuous, and hikers need to carry enough water for the journey.

Lastly, it’s smart to bring some type of defense. There are bears in the Upstate and Western North Carolina, and carrying bear spray along on the hike, just in case, is a good idea. You can get some at most outdoor stores or on Amazon.

Additionally, most South Carolina state parks have entrance fees of around $5-$8/adult, but almost all North Carolina state parks do not. For important tips on recreating responsibly, please see this story on the seven Leave No Trace principles.

Here are a few of our favorite hikes in or near the Upstate for teens. They’re a little longer and more difficult than ones we’d choose for younger kids.

Hiking for Teens Near Greenville, SC

Table Rock

The Carrick Creek Trail at Table Rock is a great place to start for an easy-to-moderate two-mile hike. It has elevation changes, creek crossings, and waterfalls.

For a challenge that will give any teen bragging rights, the 7+ mile round trip Table Rock Trail is very hard but totally worth it. The view is spectacular at the top, but the trek up is no joke. Recommended for the more conditioned teen.

Table Rock State Park | 158 Ellison Lane, Pickens, SC 29671

Summit of Table Rock

Raven Cliff Falls Trail

Nestled in the Caesars Head State Park and Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, this trail is moderately hard with a gorgeous overlook of Raven Cliff Falls. With a 420-foot drop, Raven Cliff is the tallest waterfall in the state. The hike is about five miles roundtrip from the parking lot, which isn’t large by the way. Get there early if you plan to go.

There are other trails in the same area, including the aptly named Dismal Trail (this is strenuous and teens who choose this trail need to be very careful). The entire Dismal Trail loop isn’t fully open due to Helene, but you can access the bridge as an out and back. The Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area connects to Jones Gap State Park, which is the location of the next best trail on our list.

Raven Cliff Falls | 8155 Geer Highway, Cleveland, SC

Narrow wooden bridge at Rainbow Falls, Jones Gap

Rainbow Falls at Jones Gap

Navigating boulders, jumping creeks, and hiking steep inclines are features of the trail at Jones Gap State Park. The hike to the gorgeous Rainbow Falls is under five miles and isn’t easy, but again, the payoff of seeing the stunning waterfall is certainly worth it. You’ll have to reserve a spot on weekends. You don’t need reservations on weekdays.

Jones Gap State Park | 303 Jones Gap Road, Marietta, SC

Looking Glass Rock in Pisgah Forest

Get your heart pumping with the 6+ mile trek to the top of Looking Glass Rock in Pisgah National Forest. Use caution at the top, and don’t go near the edge. The trailhead parking lot is small and fills up quickly. Go early to secure a spot and avoid the crowds.

Looking Glass Rock Trailhead | Brevard, NC 28712

Paris Mountain State Park

If you want to stay close to home but still get in a good day of hiking, head to Paris Mountain State Park here in Greenville. There are lots of trails to choose from, including really easy ones around Lake Placid to the harder Sulphur Springs Trail, a 3.6-mile trek. Brissy Ridge Trail is also fun as it’s not too long, about two miles, and hugs the ridge of the mountain.

Paris Mountain State Park | 2401 State Park Road, Greenville

Raven Rock Trail

This is one of my favorite hikes in the Upstate because it’s a bit challenging at a little over four miles round trip. It includes a small waterfall where you can cool off, a stunning overlook of Lake Keowee, and the opportunity to swim in the lake at the halfway point. You can access the Raven Rock Trail through the Keowee-Toxaway State Park, and there is no charge for parking.

Keowee-Toxaway State Park | 108 Residence Drive, Sunset, SC

Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls at Gorges State Park

I may have a thing for waterfalls. I feel that if you’re going to go hiking, be sure there’s a waterfall. It’s kind of instant gratification, or at least a good reason to keep going. Rainbow Falls at Gorges State Park is the farthest location from Greenville on this list, but it’s just so awesome.

The waterfall is enormous, and you can get a really good view from the overlook on the trail, or you can take a smaller trail down to the bottom of the falls (just be careful). But if you keep going another quarter-mile , you’ll come to more waterfalls! Turtleback Falls isn’t as stunning but still worth the extra half mile.

The trail is about four miles round trip and of moderate difficulty. The hike back is harder and more uphill than the hike to the waterfalls.

Gorges State Park | 976 Grassy Ridge Road, Sapphire, NC

Rainbow Falls at Gorges State Park, North Carolina

Daniel Ridge Loop

Daniel Ridge Loop is in North Carolina’s Pisgah Forest and is past the trailhead for Looking Glass Rock. It’s a loop (go left at the fork unless you want to have a really tough climb) and is over four miles.

It’s a pretty trail with lots of little waterfalls and different scenery. It’s about an hour and 20 minutes from Greenville. This is another favorite of mountain bikers so be prepared to jump off the trail if they fly by.

Foothills Trail

For a multi-day challenge, take the 77-mile Foothills Trail from Oconee State Park to Table Rock State Park. The trail is beautiful with intricate bridges, flowers, waterfalls, and views.

Many people will split up the trail and just hike segments. It’s great for backpacking as well. Please note: portions of the trail are still closed or heavily damaged from Helene. Check the website for conditions and updates.

Whiteside Mountain

Located in Cashiers, this trail is just over two miles and has incredible views. It’s totally worth the trip. You can add on Glenn Falls or Secret Falls for an entire day trip of hiking in the area. There is a fee of a few dollars for parking.

Not in the Upstate (but Totally Worth It)

Grandfather Mountain

Located in the High Country of North Carolina, Grandfather Mountain is about 2.5 hours from Greenville, and it’s amazing. You have to pay to get into Grandfather Mountain and reservations are required during busy times, but the trail consists of ladders on the sides of mountains and views for days. Adventurous teens will love this trail.

Three Parks in Boiling Springs, SC That Your Kids Will Love

Posted on |

Looking for fun parks in Boiling Springs, SC to take your kids for playtime? If so, there are three great parks in Boiling Springs you are going to love. Read below to find out which of these Boiling Springs parks is the right one for your family to visit today.

Playgrounds in Boiling Springs, SC

Living in Boiling Springs, I often put the kids in the car to escape the confines of the house by venturing to one of the local parks. No matter what part of North Spartanburg you live in, these parks are all worth the short drive it takes to get your family out of the house.

For more great parks, don’t miss our Guide to Parks in Spartanburg County.

Three Great Parks in Boiling Springs, SC You Should Visit

Boiling Springs Community Park

Location, location, location! The Boiling Springs Community Park is located right in the center of town – conveniently located behind the Fire Station, Lowe’s, and beside Walmart. Parents can easily reward their children for shopping with them with a stop at the park on the way home.

This park includes 8 acres with swings, a playground for big kids, and a playground for little kids. It also includes a paved walkway that is great for young ones learning to ride bikes or roller skate. There is a lovely gazebo and covered picnic tables for families wanting to pack a picnic.

Another great thing about this park is that it is not as crowded as some of the larger parks in the area, as it is not connected to any sports fields. One thing to keep in mind when you visit is that the only restroom is a porta-potty, and there is little shade.

Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park

If you want an outdoor space that has several options, head to Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park. This large recreational park hosts soccer fields, tennis courts, and an 18-hole disc golf course, all in addition to a huge, newly renovated playground for the kids. There are covered picnic tables here as well.

McMillan Park’s playground area is fenced-in, which is nice considering the size of the entire park. When you arrive with your children, you can feel safe knowing they are within a confined space with plenty of room to roam and explore. The playground includes a giant playset for big kids and a smaller playset for toddlers. It has several swings, slides, a merry-go-round, and climbers. It also has a musical section. Even on busy days, your children will find something to play on and areas to run and play.

Watch! Video Tour of Va-Du-Mar Park

If you are in the mood to explore nature, you can head over to the disc golf area. This wooded section has disc golf goals along a marked trail, and it also has a creek with some sitting areas. My kids love to hike through the woods, walk over the bridges, and visit the creek.

This park does serve as a sports complex, so some days may be more crowded than others. However, on these busy sporting days, the park is still a safe place for kids to get out their energy. Keep in mind that while this park does have restrooms, they are located by the concession stand (which is a bit of a walk). Additionally, the playground has no shade, so pack your sunscreen!

North Spartanburg Park

If you have little ones who are just starting to walk or a child with disabilities, this is the park for you! The playground section of North Spartanburg Park (Miracle Park) is a fully accessible park that includes a soft-surface playground and amenities.

This brightly colored playground is a big hit for younger children because the playset is made of ramps. Even the most hesitant climbers will be able to make their way up to the top of the playset using the ramps. It also includes fun, imaginative areas such as a theater and a musical ensemble set.

Another reason this playground is a hit is because it is fenced-in. Between the fence and the soft surface, you will feel comfortable letting your children explore independently. There are a few benches to sit on within the fenced-in area as well.

In addition to the playground, North Spartanburg Park is also the home of a BMX track, baseball fields, and a walking trail. The complex can become crowded, but there is plenty of parking. There are also restrooms located by the concession stands. Just remember to pack sunscreen as the playground area is not shaded.
