If you haven’t been to Big Ben’s Desserts in Spartanburg yet, you’re missing out. Because if you’re searching for delicious dessert in Hub City, you’re going to want to pay them a visit. Cakes, pudding, ice cream, we love them all. We visited Spartanburg’s Big Ben’s Desserts, and I think we’re all in agreement… it was a great spot to pick up a dessert treat. We’ve got some advice for what you should order when you visit!
What do you get when you combine a hometown football hero and a love of baking?
After opening in the fall of 2018 with a grand opening that left every last crumb sold, the Upstate has continued to show their love for Ben Hall and his dessert shop.
Big Ben’s Desserts offers ice cream, cake slices, cheesecake, and his famous banana pudding. A quick visit to one of the shop’s social media accounts will have you drooling and wanting to try it all. Ben loves to tease online with Insta-worthy photos of his creations.
Well, we’re here to tell you. They taste even better than they look!
Favorite Menu Items at Big Ben’s Desserts in Spartanburg
One bite, and you’ll be hooked. The hardest part of a visit to Big Ben’s Desserts will be deciding what to order.
I chose four items to share with my family and I recommend doing the same! We all enjoyed the honeybun cake, strawberry cake slice, banana pudding, and a chocolate cheesecake slice.
Big Ben’s Cheesecake
Forget what you think you know about cheesecake! Not only is it the best I’ve had, it comes with unlimited toppings. I’ll say it again: the cheesecake comes with unlimited toppings! Even ice cream! I added Oreo, hot fudge and whipped cream to my slice. This is one of those times when you hate being a good example for your children. I totally hated sharing that cheesecake.
Big Ben’s Honey Bun Cake
The honey bun cake is even better than it sounds and came with a full recommendation from one of the servers. My family only left me a small bite of the cake, but that bite was so good. The cake was moist and it was just the right amount of sweetness. I would definitely try this again. Ben also makes a lemon pound cake that is very popular with regulars.
Big Ben’s Strawberry Cake with Buttercream
The strawberry cake with buttercream icing was a huge hit with my family. My daughter has just discovered she loves strawberries. The cake had big juicy chunks of berry baked into it. This cake makes me excited to try the other flavors Ben makes, red velvet, chocolate, and key lime. Keisha, one of Ben’s fulltime associates, insisted that I try the key lime cake next time. It’s a hit even with people who think they don’t like key lime! There are also cupcakes available in these flavors plus an Oreo flavor.
Big Ben’s Banana Pudding
Now, on to the banana pudding – my husband’s favorite. Apparently, they can’t keep them on the shelves! I was told they started out with 80 orders for the day and they were already down to six, with 4 hours to go. Judging by my husband’s reaction, I can see why! He says it’s light and fluffy and creamy and wonderful and might even be better than his sister’s recipe.
Have you been to Big Ben’s desserts yet? Which yummy treat
was your favorite?

Are you craving pizza and looking for the best pizza in Greenville, SC? Greenville locals have told us where to find the best pizza around town. Peruse our list to find your new favorite pizza!
There are over 75,000 pizzerias in the United States and as a $36 billion a year industry, Americans are champions when it comes to pizza eating. They eat approximately 100 acres of pizza per day, which is a gorgeous picture to imagine.
The South is known for some exceptional cuisine but it’s the Northeast that takes the award for the best pizza, especially the New York/New Jersey region (I’m originally from NJ and lived in Rome for a time, which I’m proud to say makes me a pizza expert – this is the only thing I’m an expert at so let me have it). Most pizzerias claim they are NY-style pizza, which consists of a thin crust topped with a delicious tomato sauce and melted cheese.
One astute Kidding Around Greenville reader noted that when people get asked what their favorite pizza place is, it’s implied it is NY-style because “let’s face it, is the only style that really matters.” Well said, sir.
We asked our readers where they go for the best pizza places in the Greenville, SC area. I’ve been to most of these but I can personally recommend only one place that comes closest to the kind of pizza I grew up eating (aka the best kind) – New York Style Pizza- it’s Della Ventura’s in Greer, SC. No other place comes close in terms of correctly cooking the dough, the balance of flavor in the sauce, and the right amount of cheese. For non-NY pizza, Sidewall Pizza takes the win there with its brick oven chewy dough and a wide array of fresh toppings.
Now that I’ve likely offended a bunch of people with my recommendation, let’s see where ya’ll go for pizza:
Della Ventura’s has some of the best pizzas in Greenville, SC based on our reader’s suggestions! Their New York-style pizzas are as close as it gets in Greenville to the real deal, and they also offer a plethora of Italian dishes with hearty portions. Some of their popular dishes include calzones, baked ziti, hot subs, and chicken parmigiana. Do not forget to order their garlic knots, they are superb.
Della Ventura is awesome. The closest thing we’ve had to NY pizza since moving here. Their pastas are delicious as well.
Jennifer T.
Della’s is definitely a great place. I’m from NJ and it is the closest thing to home.

Lots of fresh quality ingredients and loaded with cheese. Their cheesy garlic bread melts in your mouth. We’re lucky they’ve moved here to Greenville!

Delicious Quick-Fired Pizza in Greenville, SC
Sometimes the kids can’t wait and everyone is hangry, and waiting 30+ minutes for a traditional pizza just won’t do. Lucky for us there are a few options that can have you out the door, pizza in hand in less than 10 minutes! Don’t worry these are not the cardboard crust pizzas you might be expecting, we wouldn’t dishonor pizza that way.
Have you visited the quaint Stone Soup in Landrum, SC? The market and cafe has beautiful, comfortable seating indoors and out. We love the pretty garden-like setting outdoors, as well as the cozy and comfortable indoor seating. And, we loved the relaxed ambiance and friendly service. Here’s why you should add this spot to your list of great restaurants for a date night, or a relaxing meal out with friends and family.
Outdoor Seating at Stone Soup
Looking for more restaurants near Greenville? Check out our Ultimate Guide to Restaurants, where you’ll find every cuisine!
Stone Soup Setting
Outdoors, and tables are set under shade awnings and a pavilion. There are both fans and heaters so the space can be enjoyed in a variety of weather. Indoors, cozy and comfortable tables are spread throughout a couple of smaller rooms of dining space with great big windows, allowing for easy conversation and a relaxed ambiance.
It is rather unusual for my husband and me, especially leaving the kids at home, to enjoy a drink, then an appetizer, a meal, and also stick around for coffee and dessert. But at Stone Soup we do because it was just that beautiful and relaxing. We probably spend an average of 2 hours on our date night meals at Stone Soup. The service was wonderful and we never once felt rushed. In fact, our waitress suggested at the end of our meal that we just keep sipping our coffee and take our time.
Stone Soup Menu
All that and we haven’t yet discussed the food. The menu at Stone Soup includes a wide variety of wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, unique appetizers, and entrees, plus cocktails, and a small selection of the day’s desserts.
We ordered (and highly recommend) the Tuna Bites for an appetizer. It was gorgeous and delicious, The tuna bites are black sesame-crusted Rare Ahi Tuna, pickled ginger, wasabi cream, chopped red pepper, and green onions, on top of the lightest, crispiest wontons you’ve ever seen or tasted.
We ordered the tuna bites again on a second visit, and they were just as delicious!
For our meals, we’ve enjoyed sandwiches like their salmon BLT and a woodfired calzone. The bacon on that BLT was some of the thickest and tastiest I’ve had while the salmon was cooked perfectly. The calzone was massive and could have easily fed two people, which it didn’t because my husband loves calzones and ate the whole thing. It was just that good.
Dessert isn’t printed on the menu, but just ask your server for what they are offering that day. We intended to get one dessert and share it, but, on the day we went, they had both peanut butter pie and a chocolate flourless cake that may as well have been fudge. So, we got them both and we had no regrets.
Stone Soup Market
Stone Soup also carries a selection of housemade baked goods, deli salads, and specialty items that can be purchased in their market. They also have housemade frozen casseroles to pick up and bring home.

The Radio Room may be known to many as a small, local music venue, but their menu features yummy sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, appetizers, and signature drinks. The venue is an excellent choice is you’re looking to see live music, but also maybe need a little bite to eat during the concert.
Their event calendar is loaded with live music coming to Greenville in addition to special events and trivia nights.
Fountain Inn Taproom at The Mill
The Fountain Inn Taproom offers a variety of events throughout the year, including live music. They have a wide selection of beer and wine to go along with your food, which includes snacking items like paninis, bratwurst, pretzels, and nachos.
Vaughn’s Food Hall
Located in Simpsonville, Vaughn’s Food Hall has it all! Not only can you grab delicious food from a variety of cuisines, but they regularly host bands for live music nights. You’ll find their upcoming music schedule on their Facebook page.
The Taphouse also has great brews if you want to grab a drink before heading out to the large open space to hang out. Check out our full review of Vaughn’s Food Hall to see everything they have to offer.
Backyard of the Vaughn’s Food Hall
The Whistle Stop
It’s no secret The Whistle Stop at The American Cafe is is one of my favorite destinations, but what’s even better than their menu is the rooftop dining area. Yes, you heard that right – eating dinner on the roof! Throw in a live band and you have the perfect spring evening. Check their website and/or Facebook page to see if they have anyone hitting the stage!
Also in downtown Spartanburg, Fr8yard is an outdoor biergarten built from repurposed shipping containers. They regularly welcome regional acts to their stage. Their master calendar has a full list of upcoming live music acts. Bonus: Their menu sounds like the perfect pairing to live music and tasty beverages!
New Groove Artisan Brewery
Just 30 minutes from Greenville, Boiling Spring’s New Groove Artisan Brewery serves pub fare and includes a menu “for the groovy kids.” Beverages include their beer, as well as specialty crafted sodas. To keep up with their live music schedule, follow their Facebook or Instagram pages.
With the continued growth of the restaurant, bar, and brewery scene in the Upstate, I’ve brushed the surface of places around town to enjoy live music while grabbing a bite to eat or perusing the stacks. However, my son would probably like to eat dinner so I had to stop at some point. As always, we’d love to hear from you if you have anything to add.
It looks like I’ve planned quite a few weekends for you!
You can thank me later.
What live music venue would you like to add to our list?

Looking for the top date night restaurants in Greenville, SC’s downtown area? We have a fantastic list of date night restaurants in the beautiful downtown Greenville area. Pair dinner with a walk-in Falls Park and you’ve got a great Greenville date night in the making.
As I’m writing this, Valentine’s Day is around the bend. Date Nights abound. I’ve compiled a subjective—yes, subjective—list of my highly recommended restaurants in Downtown Greenville for date nights. Do all of these have romantic ambience? No. Do they all have a massive price tag? Heck to the no. Do they all serve you outstanding food that will have to returning next month? YES. And for that, I hope you’ll read on and try out some of these locally-owned businesses on your next date.
Great Date Night Restaurants in Downtown Greenville
This list is far from exhaustive. The downtown Greenville restaurant scene is unmatched for a non-metropolitan area. I could argue several other eateries onto this list, but each here offers something unique and suits a variety of date desires. Start here and move out. I am rooting for you to test out something new on your next night out!
Soby’s New South Cuisine
207 South Main Street Greenville, SC You will probably recognize this restaurant immediately. Soby’s has been wining and dining the downtown Greenville scene with their fresh take on Southern cuisine for years. Alfresco dining is a popular option here while the atmosphere inside is slightly more traditional.
Chef Shaun Garcia stands by the philosophy that customers should develop favorites to keep them coming back. Therefore, his menu is permanent, and rightly so (*cough cough* the pimiento cheese). The dinner entrees range from $20-$40.
Foxcroft Wine Co
631 South Main Street Greenville, SC 29601 Speaking of wining and dining, for a less hearty evening, look no further than this Main Street bar, Foxcroft Wine Co. Elevated, though. The staff will bring out small plates paired with one of their hundreds of unique wines.
No reservations needed by design, this first come first served restaurant gives you a reason to trot out that new cocktail dress and not leave feeling like a popped can of biscuits. However, you can make reservations if you’d like. Lite and unique, this is a wonderful option for adventurous dates who can’t settle on one dish and drink. May I suggest the burgers, though, if you want some comfort food? There’s something about a scrumptious burger to deflate a stuffy date night.
Rick Erwin’s West End Grille
648 S Main Street Greenville, SC 29601 Rick Erwin’s name tacked onto this restaurant means one thing: time-“tasted” favorites and top quality control. The menu is full of American surf and turf mainstays you’ll immediately recognize. Mac and cheese, chicken, crab cakes, and all impeccably prepared and served.
Atmosphere? Elegant. You won’t be out of place in a necktie if you want to gussy up. During peak hours, secure a reservation. The prices range around $20 for starters and $40-$60 for entrees.
The Anchorage
586 Perry Ave Greenville, SC 29611 I feel like a Greenville date list isn’t complete with The Anchorage. No, it’s not in the heart of downtown, but not by a far jaunt. This eatery and chef have been nominated for several well-earned awards, requires no reservations (so arrive early or late), and pairs small plate decadence with craft beers, wines, and specialty cocktails.
Their eclectic chameleon of a menu features local providers and keto-friendly options. And, if the fact that I squirreled around with my original article plans to add this restaurant to the list doesn’t convince you, the cuisine is phenomenal. Top Tip: visit after 9 pm for your nightcap and “dessert.” Small plates can count as a dessert when they tick all the right boxes. Prices for plates in the teens and twenties.
Trappe Door
23 West Washington Street Greenville, SC 29601 An offbeat suggestion, I’m thinking about those “date nights” that need to include kids. New baby? No babysitting family around? Last-minute supper? Trappe Door has a variety of menu items rooted in Belgian culture that can please the pickiest eater. The atmosphere is cave-like, cozy, and a bit loud. I’ve been in that desperate situation before where I really needed a date night but didn’t have childcare. You just make do.
Trappe Door gives you an elevated-enough feel that your night will be special without stressing that your kids might amp up the volume. There is a solid reason that this funky pub has lasted so long in a sea of ever-changing downtown businesses. While it isn’t marketed as kid-friendly, the fish and chips can make anyone a believer. Entrees around $20-30.
Jianna
600 S Main St #2, Greenville, SC 29601 Delicious modern Italian? Check! Overlooking Falls Park? Check! Excellent vibes, drinks, and food? Check, check check! Jianna is a favorite of my husband and mine for date night, gathering with friends, special occasions, and I wouldn’t hesitate to have a meal alone there.
The atmosphere is light and relaxed, but elevated with cuisine that is not only delicious, but fresh and always being updated! We highly recommend making a reservation, and they are most busy on the weekend. entrees range from $30-$50, depending on what you are looking to indulge in.
Scoundrel
18 North Main Street, Greenville, SC 29601 Located in the heart of Downtown Greenville off of Main Street, Scoundrel has grown since it’s opening in 2022 to be one of Downtown’s top date night destinations. The cuisine at Scoundrel is a plethora of French favorites with a modern take to each dish, plus delicious craft cocktails are a hit here. You’ll find Foie Gras and Duck Liver Mousse, Beef Tartare, and other famous French dishes, along with items like the Tomahawk steak or roasted duck.
Scoundrel makes a wonderful date night spot because of the way the restaurant was designed with the consumer in mind, with low lighting illuminating the space, giving the restaurant the perfect romantic ambiance. Menu items range from $6-$88, with a wide range of dining options.
Where is your favorite date night restaurant in Downtown Greenville?
Have you heard of Gather GVL? This set of shipping container restaurants, entertainment, and gathering space is located in Downtown Greenville. We think you’ll want to check out this unique spot pronto.
Have you ever wished you had a place to go spend time with other adults, maybe enjoy a grown-up beverage and let your kids run around, without someone having to host it? The answer to that wish and more is in downtown Greenville, and there are so many reasons to be excited.
What Is Gather GVL?
Utilizing shipping containers, they’ve created a unique space where people can “Gather” and enjoy local food, beverages, and entertainment. Creating a space downtown where people could dine without making reservations or having the option of a drive-through was one of the inspirations for creating this space.
Another inspiration for Gather was the young children in Mack and Doug Cross’ lives. The father and son duo behind this unique new dining hall told me that having space where families could enjoy going out and not have to worry about the kids just being kids, was one of the reasons they created Gather. If your kids are four-legged and furry, don’t worry they’re welcome too!
Food, glorious food of all different types is what you’ll find at Gather GVL. This is the perfect place for a group outing because no one will have to compromise. Gather GVL has something for everyone, even people on plant-based diets will find numerous choices on the menu.
How has no one thought to do this before? When the tenants of Gather were announced, this North Carolina-based restaurant was among the most talked-about by Kidding Around team members. With good reason, donuts and fried chicken – who wouldn’t want that?
HenDough creates artisan donuts that will make you throw your diet out the window and never look back. Donut flavors like Creme Brulee, chocolate chip cookie dough and apple bacon bear-claws had people lined up waiting for a bite. Did we mention that the chicken biscuit sandwich on the menu is the size of a child’s head? It is, and it’s juicy and goes perfect with the Brussel sprout side dish on their menu.
Organic Acai/Pitaya smoothie bowls, smoothies, and fresh-squeezed juices from CocoBowlz were first introduced to the Upstate at their Haywood Mall location.
Here you can get your pub food fix and order Philly cheesesteaks, cheese curds, Reuben sandwiches, and other pub fare.
Gather GVL Has Entertainment, Too!
The large green space and stage at Gather were created to provide patrons with a place to enjoy more than just food and beverage. Live music will be scheduled regularly and there are plans for other entertainment like sporting event broadcasts and family movie nights.
If you want to stay informed about all the cool events happening at Gather GVL you can follow them on Gather GVL Facebookor sign-up for their mailing list.
