“I want to help people express themselves,” Kristin LaRoy told me at her shop in Travelers Rest called TR Makers Co.

I sincerely hoped that did not mean she would let my fiery toddler express herself by banging the mallet on Kristin’s finger as she held the print stamp in place for the handmade design my daughter was attempting.

That’s some serious trust and she won me over quickly.

In 2019, Kristin was brought into the SmartARTS program organized by the Metropolitan Arts Council, which is a pretty big deal. She uses her style of multi-disciplinary arts integration teaching to educate students in schools across Greenville County. And she also received the 2019 Carrie and Skip Gordon Emerging Teaching Artist Award for my work with SmartARTS. Brava!

Become A Maker

TR Makers Co. is right on Main Street in downtown Travelers Rest and is home to a beautiful little shop that sells goods from local artists, including soap, printed shirts (that are the softest I’ve ever felt, by the way) and sweatshirts, jewelry, dolls, and pottery. But the coolest part, at least for the kids, is all of the neat stuff Kristin has for the art section of TR Makers.

Seated at an art bar, my kids were able to make their own designs for cards and paper. They designed what the art on their little handbags would look like, and with Kristin’s help and patience, had a lot of fun becoming little makers themselves.

Adults also can get in on the action. TR Makers offers Play Dates for groups of one to six people. These can be for families or friends or girls night outs – pretty much anything. Grown-ups need to play, too. TR Makers also offers homeschool classes, art camps, and tons of art experiences for kids and grown-ups.

If you have a young child wanting to explore art, the Mini Makers program will help! One Saturday and some Wednesdays, TR Makers Co. offers Mini Makers, where your child can explore a theme through art. Parents participate as well, and your kid can take their art home after they are finished.

Arts Lead Learning Homeschool Classes

TR Makers Co offers homeschool classes called Arts Lead Learning.

Classes are held throughout the fall and spring. Each half day arts-integrated lesson covers an age-appropriate academic study in areas of either Science, Math, English, Social Studies, or cultural studies.

Students get the opportunity to make 2-3 projects during the lesson and come home knowing more about the chosen topic of study. Detail on current classes as well as general information on this program can be found online: Arts Lead Learning at TR Makers.

Summer Fun and Birthday Parties

TR Makers also offers Summer Maker Camps and Summer Maker Days for students age 7-16. Camps are half-day events with the kids meeting from 9 am- Noon and or 1-4 pm. Classes are a 5 day week long.

The Summer Maker Days are flexible. Students can join for one, two, or more classes during the week. They offer discounted passes for 2-Day maker days.

Summer classes and camp this summer look like a lot of fun with hands-on creating, problem-solving, and eating all in the name of art.

TR Makers also offers unique birthday parties where the birthday boy/girl receives a special block print t-shirt made during the party. Parties include art instruction and materials for 9 guests ages 4 and up and cost $250. Options are available to add food but parents can also bring in their own food or order in (Sidewall Pizza is just down the street, you know, for reference).

Shopping

TR Makers Co has always carried local goods, jewelry, art pieces, and unique gifts. They are always adding a ton of new items to their inventory, including DIY at-home art kits, new items from local, regional, and global artists, and artisan gifts. They offer free local pick-up daily as well.

If you’re in Travelers Rest, be sure to stop by TR Makers Co., or make a trip just for this place. It’s definitely worth it. Travelers Rest has so many gems. Don’t miss any of them.

Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve is one of my family’s absolute favorite places to get outdoors in Spartanburg, SC. It’s completely free, centrally located, and family-friendly. This beautiful space is full of ponds, waterfalls, wildlife, mature trees, and a wide variety of leafy and flowering plants. Whether you’re local to the Upstate or just visiting the area, this is one of the best places to visit at any time of year.

Get to Know Hatcher Garden in Spartanburg, SC

In 1969, Harold and Josephine Hatcher made the decision to retire in Spartanburg, South Carolina to be closer to family. They immediately set to work reviving the land around their home, converting eroded cotton fields slowly but surely into thriving gardens.

Over time, the couple started opening their gardens to the public, allowing volunteers from community organizations, and expanding the property. In the 1980s, the Hatchers donated the property to Spartanburg County Foundation, ensuring its preservation for public enjoyment for years to come.

Josephine and Harold passed away near the turn of the 21st century, but their legacy lives on through every seasonal bloom, smiling visitor, and committed volunteer at the gardens.

Nature Trails at Hatcher Garden

Hatcher Garden is truly a fully immersive nature experience, and we are so thankful that they have built up the garden with both beauty and accessibility in mind. Wide, paved paths wind through the entire garden with gentle slopes, perfect for wheelchairs and parents pushing strollers.

Visitors can wander over 1 mile of interconnected trail loops, and you can easily spend anywhere from just 15 minutes to several hours here. The trails are almost entirely shaded, meaning they’re perfect for any time of year and make one of Spartanburg’s best summer hikes to avoid the heat.

If you’re planning to hike, park in the main parking lot and just enter through the main garden entrance. You’ll find no-barrier entry to the trails and a smooth descent into the rest of the gardens there!

Flowers in Bloom at Hatcher Garden

As you explore, you’ll discover a stunning range of themed gardens with different plants in bloom throughout the year. My children are particularly fond of the Butterfly Garden with larger-than-life bug statues, while I personally love the Water Wise Demonstration Garden, which shows off drought-resistant varieties that are pretty all year round.

Before your visit, you can check out Hatcher Garden’s Bloom Guide for details on which flowers may be in bloom at any time of year and where to find them on the property.

Please remind children not to pick any flowers at Hatcher Garden, as they are carefully maintained for everyone to be able to enjoy. If you want to bring the gardens home with you, then keep an eye out for their annual Spring Plant Sale!

Scenic Bridges and Structures at Hatcher Garden

There are multiple scenic bridges, including the large Children’s Garden Bridge, also known as Stone Bridge, connecting the main parking area to the Children’s Garden. This one is the perfect photo spot when the flowers overhead are blooming! There are a few large wooden bridges, too, like the one crossing between Cypress Pond and Duck Pond.

A well loved local favorite is known as Corrie’s Bridge. Named for former Board Member Corrie Miller Whitlock, this short, covered bridge overlooks Hatcher Garden’s largest waterfall, a lovely 10-foot cascade. You can also view the waterfall from the Stone Patio at Corrie’s Garden Room near the waterfall’s base.

Another popular spot to stop is the Garden of Hope and Healing, where you can find covered benches around a sand garden and small pavilion. As a homeschool family, we also appreciate the John A. Nevison Amphitheater, where my kids can work on their schoolwork, make presentations, and balance and leap across the stone levels.

The Children’s Garden at Hatcher Garden

Every parent in Spartanburg County needs to know about the incredible growing Children’s Garden at Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve. While the entire gardens are family-friendly, the Children’s Garden has rapidly expanded into an attraction all its own.

The large open sand garden in front of the maintenance shed is one of the main draws to the Children’ Garden. This large open area is complete with a sand toy library, covered picnic tables, and even a changing table. A short paved path connects the sand garden to the restrooms and water fountains, ensuring maximum convenience for visiting families.

Just past the sand garden, you’ll discover a Little Free Library, fully accessible gazebo, and a small fish pond. This water feature is for fish, not splashing, and parents should keep a very close watch on children around the water. The Sensory Loop connects these spaces, inviting children to use their senses to look, listen, smell, and feel their way through play.

My kids adore the trail of leapfrog rocks, complete with a rock sculpture of a frog, which kicks off the Altrusa Adventure Trail. This trail was made possible by Altrusa International of Spartanburg, SC, a non-profit focused on community improvement which has a long history of supporting Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve.

The Adventure Trail is designed to engage balance, movement, and spatial awareness: “Learning through Fun and a Little Risk!” It now includes a crawl-through tunnel, rope ladder, and hanging rope swings in a fantastic shaded naturescape right by the water.

Homeschooling at Hatcher Garden

While Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve is steadily growing in popularity, it remains a generally uncrowded and quiet place for families to enjoy during the week. This has made it one of our favorite spots to homeschool outdoors in the Spartanburg area.

With accessible trails, abundant seating options where you can read or do workbooks, and plenty of nature to explore, you can easily fill a homeschool day in the gardens.

Need ideas? We’ve got some for you!

  • Observation: Use your senses to explore the gardens. Describe what you see, hear, and smell. What colors do you see? What do the birds sound like? How does the smell of the flowers make you feel?
  • Identification: Bring a field guide on birds, bugs, or plants to see what you can find! One great option for early readers is The Secret Lives of Backyard Bugsby Judy Burris and Wayne Richards.
  • Navigation: Grab a map at the picnic shelter near the main parking area and let your children practice reading it to guide you through the gardens. Practice using the legend, finding your way to places of interest, and following directions.

Community Stewardship of Hatcher Garden

Every visitor to Hatcher Garden—whether you come to learn, to work, or just to enjoy—is a steward of its continued beauty. Visiting as a family is one of the greatest opportunities we have had to teach our children how to appreciate and engage with nature with a strong sense of responsibility for it.

The Children’s Garden is the best place for kids to really set their imaginations loose and play on all the structures provided, but they are welcome to explore other areas of the larger gardens as well. We’ve seen some fantastic forts built with sticks and stones in the woodland areas, but just help kids remember not to pick the flowers or disturb wildlife.

Outside food and drink are allowed in the gardens, so packing a picnic can be a great way to stretch your visit and enjoy some extra time in the great outdoors. Be sure to clean up after yourselves and take any trash to the provided cans near the garden entrances.

Interested in volunteering? Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve is one of the greatest places in all of Spartanburg County for kids and adults to volunteer. You can be a Horticulture Helper, Garden Guide, Office Assistant, Special Events Helper, and more! Individuals and groups are welcome, including church groups and scouting troops, with regular volunteer opportunities every Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am to 12 pm.

You can also make a financial gift or visit the gift shop in person or online to buy a souvenir. Many of the items in the gift shop are created by local artists, such as watercolors, walking sticks, jewelry, and more. This is also a great place to shop for unique and meaningful gifts for your local friends and family.

Note: A dog named Major, lovingly considered the mascot of the gardens, can often be found in the gift shop. He is generally friendly, but those with pet allergies or small children may want to be aware of his potential presence before visiting the store.

Three Parks in Boiling Springs, SC That Your Kids Will Love

Posted on |

Looking for fun parks in Boiling Springs, SC to take your kids for playtime? If so, there are three great parks in Boiling Springs you are going to love. Read below to find out which of these Boiling Springs parks is the right one for your family to visit today.

Playgrounds in Boiling Springs, SC

Living in Boiling Springs, I often put the kids in the car to escape the confines of the house by venturing to one of the local parks. No matter what part of North Spartanburg you live in, these parks are all worth the short drive it takes to get your family out of the house.

For more great parks, don’t miss our Guide to Parks in Spartanburg County.

Three Great Parks in Boiling Springs, SC You Should Visit

Boiling Springs Community Park

Location, location, location! The Boiling Springs Community Park is located right in the center of town – conveniently located behind the Fire Station, Lowe’s, and beside Walmart. Parents can easily reward their children for shopping with them with a stop at the park on the way home.

This park includes 8 acres with swings, a playground for big kids, and a playground for little kids. It also includes a paved walkway that is great for young ones learning to ride bikes or roller skate. There is a lovely gazebo and covered picnic tables for families wanting to pack a picnic.

Another great thing about this park is that it is not as crowded as some of the larger parks in the area, as it is not connected to any sports fields. One thing to keep in mind when you visit is that the only restroom is a porta-potty, and there is little shade.

Boiling Springs Community Park

Boiling Springs Community Park Spartanburg

Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park

If you want an outdoor space that has several options, head to Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park. This large recreational park hosts soccer fields, tennis courts, and an 18-hole disc golf course, all in addition to a huge, newly renovated playground for the kids. There are covered picnic tables here as well.

McMillan Park’s playground area is fenced-in, which is nice considering the size of the entire park. When you arrive with your children, you can feel safe knowing they are within a confined space with plenty of room to roam and explore. The playground includes a giant playset for big kids and a smaller playset for toddlers. It has several swings, slides, a merry-go-round, and climbers. It also has a musical section. Even on busy days, your children will find something to play on and areas to run and play.

Watch! Video Tour of Va-Du-Mar Park

If you are in the mood to explore nature, you can head over to the disc golf area. This wooded section has disc golf goals along a marked trail, and it also has a creek with some sitting areas. My kids love to hike through the woods, walk over the bridges, and visit the creek.

This park does serve as a sports complex, so some days may be more crowded than others. However, on these busy sporting days, the park is still a safe place for kids to get out their energy. Keep in mind that while this park does have restrooms, they are located by the concession stand (which is a bit of a walk). Additionally, the playground has no shade, so pack your sunscreen!

North Spartanburg Park

If you have little ones who are just starting to walk or a child with disabilities, this is the park for you! The playground section of North Spartanburg Park (Miracle Park) is a fully accessible park that includes a soft-surface playground and amenities.

This brightly colored playground is a big hit for younger children because the playset is made of ramps. Even the most hesitant climbers will be able to make their way up to the top of the playset using the ramps. It also includes fun, imaginative areas such as a theater and a musical ensemble set.

Another reason this playground is a hit is because it is fenced-in. Between the fence and the soft surface, you will feel comfortable letting your children explore independently. There are a few benches to sit on within the fenced-in area as well.

In addition to the playground, North Spartanburg Park is also the home of a BMX track, baseball fields, and a walking trail. The complex can become crowded, but there is plenty of parking. There are also restrooms located by the concession stands. Just remember to pack sunscreen as the playground area is not shaded.

20 Top Ideas for Great Dates With Your Kid

Posted on | 3 Comments

Looking for some fun mom and son dates near Greenville, SC or daddy daughter dates near Greenville, SC? Whether you’re looking for a memorable outing or quality one-on-one time with your child, writer Kristina Hernandez shares 20 great date ideas. From splurge-worthy adventures to free activities, these ideas are perfect for any family and situation. Plus, we’ve included some tips to help you make the most of your special time together!

Parent child dates in Greenville, SC
Entrance to O.P. Taylor's in Greenville

Looking for even more fun activities to enjoy in Greenville? Be sure to check out our ultimate guide to things to do in Greenville for even more great ideas for family-friendly adventures!

As soon as my daughter was old enough, as in she could maybe hold a slice of pizza and take a tentative bite, I took her on a date to my favorite pizza joint. While conversation with a three-year-old was limited, it was the time we spent together that made the difference.

As she has grown up and the concept of a “date” is slowly beginning to form in her little mind, she loves it when it’s just her and I out together or her and dad. Nurturing the child-parent relationship with dates is one of my favorite ways to spend time together – and here are some ideas to make it one of your favorite times too.

Tips for Date Time With Your Kid

Here are a few tips for maximizing this special time with your child from Kidding Around Owner Bethany Winston.

  • Don’t make the date a reward for good behavior.
Don’t let this treat be one that has to be earned. Make it a treat that they get just because you love them and want to spend time with them. The kid who constantly presses your buttons is likely the kid who also really needs your attention.
  • Put your cell phone on “Do Not Disturb”
If nothing else, it will send a clear message to your child that they are more important than your business and Facebook.
  • Do something inexpensive and simple.
Remember this outing is about taking time to just enjoy your child. Big, glitzy programs can distract you from being able to really talk and get to know each other. When the outing is inexpensive and simple, it’s also easier to repeat frequently.
  • Don’t force your kids to talk.
Sometimes it’s good just to take a break from trying to find out information from your child, and instead give them space to talk about what they want to talk about. You never know where that might lead.
  • Cater to your kid’s preferences.
Try to let your child do something that they enjoy rather than having to cater to your tastes. This might mean eating at a place that wouldn’t be your top choice or spending a half hour watching your kid climb a playground.
  • Try to incorporate moments like these into everyday life.

Places to Have a Date With Your Kid

Whether you’re planning a mother-daughter/son or daddy-daughter/son date, they can be super simple. But if you’re looking to get out and about, here are some great ideas for places you can bring your child throughout Greenville, SC!

Ice Cream Date

Because who doesn’t love going on an ice cream date? It’s inexpensive, doesn’t require a smaller child to sit still for a long time, and it can involve chocolate.

Trampoline parks

Get in a workout and have fun at our local trampoline parks Big Air and Sky Zone Greenville.

Bike Ride

This can either involve an actual bike with an older kid or the parent walking next to their child riding a bike. Go around the block a couple of times and talk with your child or go on the Swamp Rabbit Trail (or other places) together. It’s exercise and bonding.

Pedicab Ride

Take a ride on a pedicab through Greenville with Greenville Bike Taxi. We did it during the holidays but you can do it any time of the year!

The Greenville Bike Taxi is so much fun, your kids will LOVE exploring the city!

Fly through the air

Go zip lining and climb through rope courses in the air at Flying Rabbit Adventures. This would be awesome for older kids who you can do the bigger course together with.

Go see a play

I’ve taken my daughter to the South Carolina Children’s Theatre to see shows and it’s really fun. I used to go to Broadway shows in New York City with my mother when I was old enough and while Greenville isn’t NYC, it certainly has a wonderful theater community with excellent plays. And the Greenville Theatre has wonderful age-appropriate shows throughout the year.

Get Crafting

Head to ReCraft for a fun time together making new things out of old things!

ReCraft Greenville is a great place to craft with your kids!

Go to Home Depot Free Workshop Days

Home Depot has a kid workshop day every first Saturday of the month and we’ve been going for years. It’s free and you get to build something together and paint it and get all messy. It’s a blast.

Shop for Cheap Books

If your kid loves to read, make a date out of any of our area’s used book sales or the massive Book Warehouse Outlet sales.

Story Time

Libraries are worlds of imagination and creativity. I am an avid reader and my kids love books so taking one to story time is a treat. Libraries also have lots of free craft activities! There are also several storytime events throughout Greenville that your kids will enjoy.

Museums

The Upcountry History Museum always has awesome exhibits and I’ve taken my daughter to them for dates before and we always really enjoy it. They are interactive and give parents the chance to read quickly and look smart for their kids (hoping that’s not just me). The Children’s Museum of the Upstate also has tons of great workshops and exhibits.

You can visit the Greenville County Museum of Art absolutely free. They also have great events and activities on their calendar and many are free.

Roper Mountain Science Center Starry Nights

The Roper Mountain Science Center has a planetarium night every Friday evening about the stars and constellations and you get to lean back and look up at the starry night sky. It’s really neat and fun for both kids and adults.

Roper Mountain Science Center, Greenville, SC

Roper Mountain Science Center has so much to do, including Starry Nights on Fridays, that make a perfect daddy/daughter, mother/son date night!

Go shopping

I really don’t enjoy shopping but I do enjoy shopping for my kids and letting them pick out clothes or a book or a toy. I’m a big fan of some of the children’s consignment stores in the area and thrift stores like Miracle Hill and Goodwill. It’s fun to take your child and pick out a book for 50 cents or a dress for a couple of dollars.

Find a new picnic spot

Greenville has so many special little outdoor nooks that are perfect for picnics. Pack your meal or grab a to-go meal from one of your favorite restaurants. If you need tips, we’ve got you covered with ideas on how to plan the perfect picnic.

Coffee/Hot Chocolate

While your kids hopefully aren’t addicted to coffee like us crazy adults, there are tons of great little cafes in the Greenville area to grab a caffeinated beverage for you, a hot chocolate for your kid, and maybe a scone or two to share and relax while sitting on a comfy sofa or at a window overlooking Main Street.

Go Indoor Rock Climbing

This is perfect for both kids and their parents who are adventurous or want to try something new. BlockHaven, Climb@BlueRidge, and projectROCK Easley are all great options for indoor rock climbing.

Take a hike

With miles and miles of trails in the area, you can’t really go wrong taking a hike together. Pack a lunch and have a great day together.

Pick-Your-Own-??

During the warmer months, there are lots of great options to pick strawberries, tulips, lavender, and apples, which provides opportunities for conversation and quality time together.

Get cooking or baking

Whether in your kitchen or taking a cooking class together like this bread-making class! Learning to make delicious food together is something that your child will carry for the rest of their lives.

Painting & Creating

The TReehouse Cafe and Art Studio is one of our favorite places thanks to its relaxing yet funky and artsy vibe. You can grab a meal together and paint or create art while there. Or you can go together to one of these painting/art places around town (just call ahead of time to be sure they have space).

TReehouse Cafe Travelers Rest

TReehouse Cafe and Art Studio in Travelers Rest is a great kid’s date idea, with art projects, delicious food, and awesome decor!

Go to a game

For older kids, a great date night would be to see a baseball game at Fluor Field. Or see the Greenville hockey team, the Swamp Rabbits, play at The Well.

Farmers Markets

From downtown Greenville to Travelers Rest to Simpsonville, the summer months are filled with beautiful farmers markets where you can take a stroll with your kid through the stands, grab a scone, and pick out produce and fruit that they like. In the wintertime, hit up the Toasty Farmer Indoors Farmer Market. It’s a good opportunity for them to help choose nurturing food for you both to cook at home together.

Go mini-golfing or golfing together

Takeoff Mini-Golf next to Runway Park in Greenville is such a fun place to go mini-golfing. There’s also free mini-golfing at McPherson Park in Greenville or Sparkle City Putt Putt in Spartanburg. For older kids, Top Golf or 3’s Greenville Golf & Grill are great choices.

Run a race together

So many great races are happening this spring in the Greenville area. Some offer child races but if your kid is old enough, run a short race with them (or if they are smaller, some races allow you to run with a jogger).

Enjoy the Outdoors

Greenville is situated in such a perfect place – it’s not far from the mountains or beautiful, pristine lakes. Go kayaking or paddleboarding on a date with your kid in either a tandem kayak if they are smaller or two kayaks. Go hiking – the trails here are really fun and there are hikes for people of all ages. Or go fishing together!

Go old school

Take your child to the Upstate Pinball & Arcade Museum where you can play all kinds of old-school games together.

Other Activities for Daddy-Daughter Date Night: Greenville, SC

Theatre

If you’re looking for a fancy outing with a younger daughter, you might enjoy a SC Children’s Theatre performance of The Rainbow Fish from January 24th to February 8th, 2026, or The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe from February 7th through February 22nd, 2026! And our Things to do with Teens in Greenville guide may help if you have a teen daughter. This is a great way to get dressed up, catch a theatre show, and head to dinner downtown together.

Fun Playtime Together

Of course, the old standbys such as mini golf, bowling, and hiking can provide a lot of fun memories. Consider asking your daughter to pick an activity; she will likely have a great idea. You can also head to TReehouse Cafe to paint together or Color Clay Cafe (Family Saturday deals!), which is just a lovely way to spend time together. My daughter really loves going on Go-karting dates to Frankies Fun Park with her dad; it’s something she looks forward to. There are also fun arcades nearby that they will love! Quality time is what you make of it.

Dinner Date

Check out our Kids Eat Free options for a treat. You can also check out a local coffee shop; we really like Third Place Coffeehouse for the vibes, to grab a hot chocolate together after dinner. A relaxed dinner date paired with some kid-friendly restaurants might be your best bet with younger kids. If you’re looking for restaurants that are a little more upscale but still have kid-friendly fare, Southern Culture and Tupelo Honey offer southern food that even picky eaters will enjoy. And Grill Marks’ combo of hamburgers and milkshakes is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

No matter what activity or dinner option you choose, you can create a priceless memory with your daughter by asking to spend time with her. It’s a tradition that can happen far more often than just around Valentine’s Day each year.

Do you know of a great Daddy Daughter Date idea that we should add to our list?

Croft State Park: The Perfect Park for an Outdoor Adventure Near Spartanburg, SC

Posted on |

Have you visited Croft State Park? With a wooden dock, a clear lake, tiny minnows sparkling in sunny shallow waters, tall trees, horses, hiking trails, and a playground, it sounds like the perfect place, right?  The next time you’re looking for a family adventure, check out Croft State Park!

Croft State Park in Spartanburg, South Carolina

Spend a Day at Croft State Park

This gorgeous 7,000-acre state park offers miles of hiking, biking, and even equestrian trails. On our visit, we walked the short Lake Craig connector trail and then enjoyed views of an absolutely beautiful Lake Craig. We enjoyed snacks on an adorable little dock and watched tiny minnows in the shallow water around us. Nearby fishermen were also quite entertaining for my crew.

We enjoyed a very peaceful morning in the park. My homeschoolers were able to practice making super sentences with quality adjectives about all the things they were noticing from the dock. “The sun sparkles on the backs of the wiggling minnows.” The next time we go, I’ll bring sketchbooks and writing paper so they can write down their sentences and illustrate. There were definitely plenty of places to sit near the lake, and lots of grass for blankets, if that’s your preference.

You will find bathrooms conveniently near the parking lot for Lake Craig. A short walk up the hill brings you to a nice playground with views of the park’s equestrian facilities. While there were only a handful of horses and riders when we visited, my children really enjoyed watching them as we walked past. The playground was great for my children (ages 4-8), but younger children need careful watching due to the height of some equipment.

Things to Do at Croft State Park

Hiking

There are several trails at Croft, including an easy Nature Trail that’s about one-and-a-half miles. A few of the major trails are Palmetto Trail (Croft Passage), Nature Trail, Foster Mill, Southside Loop, and Rocky Ridge/ Whitestone Springs. You’ll also find several additional mixed-use trails that are designated for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. This park has over 20 miles of mountain biking trails, which is spectacular if you love the sport.

We love taking a small portion of the Palmetto Trail to Fairforest Creek in the summer. It’s not too difficult, so our toddler and four-year-old can come along. It also leads out to the creek, which is a great place to splash in the creek on hot days.

Camping

Camping at Croft should be on your radar for places to go next time you’re ready to pack up and head to the Great Outdoors. The park offers both RV camping and tent camping sites, in addition to a primitive group camping site that can accommodate up to 100 people. Camping sites are on packed gravel and come with electrical and water hookups. There are even hot showers, which as a mom with messy kids, makes taking them camping a little easier.

Canoe, Kayak, and Paddleboard Rentals

One of the great places to do watersports in the area is at Croft. You can bring your own equipment, or you can rent canoes, small boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards from the park itself.

For Jon boat and canoe rentals, you pay $15 for four hours or $25 per day. For kayaks and paddleboards, the cost is $10-$15 per hour for the rental. They do not rent after 6 pm, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.

Pets are allowed as long as they are leashed.

Park hours are 7 am – 6 pm daily (8 pm on Fridays), and 7 am – 9 pm daily during Daylight Savings Time.
