Complete Your Perfect Weekend with Brunch at Cantina 76

Love a good brunch? KAG Contributor Kristina Hernandez does, and she’s sharing all the info about brunch at Cantina 76. Find out about the Mexican-inspired brunch fare and drinks on the new menu. Don’t blame us if you’re hungry when you finish reading. Just make plans for brunch!

Brunch is the best meal, hands down. It’s the ultimate combination of sweet and savory, preferably enjoyed with a mimosa. All of those expectations are met with the new brunch at Cantina 76, the locally-owned and operated Mexican-inspired establishment in the heart of downtown Greenville. I had the chance to try the brunch menu recently and it was glorious.

Brunch at Cantina 76

Cantina 76 prides itself on using fresh and local ingredients to create imaginative dishes and handcrafted margaritas (which I highly recommend). Brunch follows this same idea and the results are delicious.

The Chicken & Waffles is sweet and savory with fried chicken and an ancho honey glaze, served with fruit and syrup if you like. Everything was cooked to perfection and now my kids want waffles every morning.

The Avocado Toast is perfection. Lots of ripe avocado spread across toasted bread and topped with a fried egg, pico de gallo, and lime crema.

You can enjoy the Steak and Egg Migas with either one taco or two, which has wok-seared flank steak, cheddar cheese, scrambled eggs, picante verde, and caramelized onions topped with crispy tortilla strips.

Other options include a huge Breakfast Rollup with chorizo, cheese, eggs, tater tots, and crema with pico de gallo, the Huevos Rancheros with refried beans, salsa fritti, sunny side up eggs, and salsa verde, and the Breakfast Bowl with smashed tots, salsa, a fried egg, cheese, and crumbled bacon.

Mimosas are also on the brunch menu because it’s brunch. The classic mimosa is composed of orange juice and champagne and is refreshing and delightful. Just be prepared to explain to your kids that it’s not orange juice.

Cantina 76 also serves a Honeysuckle Mimosa, Pama Mimosa, Peach Mimosa, and a Bloody Mary. Sides of fruit and tater tots are also on the menu.  Outdoor seating is available when the weather cooperates.

Cantina 76 is Family Friendly

The laid back atmosphere of Cantina 76 is perfect for families too. The staff are all very kind and accommodating and kids will recognize things they have eaten before on the menu, even though they are presented with a tasty twist. My two young kids really enjoyed everything and they aren’t exactly adventurous eaters. We’ll be back for sure.

Lemongrass Kitchen Is Where You Find Authentic Vietnamese Flavors in Spartanburg

Posted on |

Have you been to Lemongrass Kitchen in Spartanburg, SC yet? Growing up with a love of flavors and spices, I am in constant search not so much for fusion restaurants but more authentic dining experiences, places that are about celebrating their heritage and remain true to the characteristics of each dish.

Lemongrass Kitchen Spartanburg SC

There’s nothing like discovering a family-run restaurant who boldly share their home-grown recipes to share with the public. The Lemongrass Kitchen is such a place. It’s run by husband and wife team Tony Nguyen and his wife Thang Bui. Transplants from California, Tony used to run a kitchen in Chinatown, Los Angeles. Now they are adding to the growing list of fun dining options in downtown Spartanburg.

Spartanburg SC Restaurants

Hub City has GREAT restaurants! Here are some of the best restaurants in Spartanburg, SC!

About The Lemongrass Kitchen

Just a block off Main Street, The Lemongrass Kitchen mostly serves Southern Vietnamese dishes. Just as if you were in Saigon, the restaurant specializes in Pho, a good-sized noodle dish, sometimes served in chicken or beef broth and paired with fragrant condiments of basil, mint leaves and bean sprouts, a definite Southern Vietnam touch.

Some visitors might be surprised with the limited menu, but if you were to visit Vietnam, this is actually typical. Restaurants specialize in specific dishes and have about multiple variations of the same dish. So goes with The Lemongrass Kitchen. On our visit, hubby had the “dry” noodle dish, Bun Thit, a combination of vermicelli rice noodles, fresh vegetables, spring rolls, and sliced pork. I was feeling cold and ordered the beef Pho, Pho Tai cooked with a deep sweetish broth and served with thick flat noodles. If you noticed, both dishes had noodles, veggies, and meat.

But the variations come in broth options, type of noodles, and protein of choice (they also have tofu on request). I also ordered a pearl milk tea, just because they had it and I was glad I did. It was a nice addition to the savory dish I had.

The Lemongrass Kitchen Spartanburg SC

One thing we love about Vietnamese food is its freshness. We found the same experience at The Lemongrass Kitchen which sources their produce from the local farmers’ markets. The broth was crystal clear, probably from simmered bone marrow cooked for hours and strained with love. Compared to Japanese Ramen, it is much lighter and the noodles are made of rice, not wheat (though we do love our fair share of Ramen).

Before you add any Sriracha (the now ubiquitous Vietnamese chili sauce)  to your dish, make sure to taste the broth first and savor it. Every kitchen has its signature Pho flavor. Then proceed and make it your own, with a squeeze of lemon, a bite of basil, a handful of bean sprouts for crunch, and maybe a splash of more fish sauce.

Another thing we ordered was the Cha Gio or the Vietnamese egg roll. It was a delicious appetizer and quite reasonable. Altogether, our bill was roughly $25, though if you didn’t order all the other things I did, a meal here would cost $10 per dish. A bowl of Pho can easily be shared with your littles. If you’re not up to having soup or a baguette sandwich (Banh Mi), I would suggest trying a couple of the appetizers for a meal.

The restaurant is casual dining, decorated with a bamboo theme. They mostly cater to the office lunch crowd but open for dinner till 8 pm.

Poppington’s Gourmet Popcorn in Greenville, SC: Can’t Just Try One Flavor!

Posted on |

Poppington’s Gourmet Popcorn, a staple on Main Street in Greenville, SC for more than a decade, is under new ownership and we’ve got the story on this Willy Wonka-ish amazing small business.

If you’ve walked on Main Street in downtown Greenville, you’ve probably stopped into Poppington’s Gourmet Popcorn, even if just to window shop. It’s been there since 2012 and only recently came under new ownership. Boy did they hit the ground running.

We stopped by to get the story and try the popcorn and really, didn’t want to leave. It was that good. And read to the bottom for a little gift for Kidding Around readers!

Poppington's Gourmet Popcorn
So many flavors

How One Acquires a Popcorn Shop

Skyler Burkett and his wife, Brittanie, were visiting Greenville with some friends a few years ago. They were looking to move from a tiny town in Illinois and stopped into Poppington’s on Main Street. They asked the owners if they were looking to sell at all. Turns out, the owners were open to it.

It took a couple of years to actually make the move to buy Poppington’s and get to Greenville but it all fell into place in April 2023 and Skyler was now a modern-day Willy Wonka, creating all kinds of wonderful and creative flavors that make you second guess exactly what you’re eating.

Skyler and Brittanie Burkett at Poppington's popcorn
Skyler and Brittanie Burkett, co-owners at Poppington’s Gourmet Popcorn

Fun fact: Skyler grew up on a farm in Illinois that was basically all corn fields. And now he’s a popcorn shop owner. Full circle!

The Flavors Are Incredible

Sweet or savory, you name it, they have it. And it’s going to be good.

I personally love pickles so I jumped at the chance to try the Dill Pickle flavor of popcorn at Poppington’s (don’t judge). I was 99% sure I was eating an actual pickle and not popcorn, that’s how close the flavor was. Literally the only thing different was the texture. The Bacon Cheddar popcorn was also a favorite. It tastes like you are eating a piece of bacon along with the best piece of cheddar cheese you’ve ever had in your life. I just kept wondering how in the world they pack that much flavor into a kernel of popped corn.

Poppington's Gourmet Popcorn
Skyler Burkett at Poppington’s Gourmet Popcorn

Oh, and the Havarti Dill flavor was amazing with lots of bold cheese and dill pickle flavors.

Don’t worry, if pickles aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other flavors I promise you’ll love like Cotton Candy, Birthday Cake, Salted Caramel, and Toffee. Every single flavor we tried was just so good.

Popcorn at Poppington’s is the Real Deal

All the flavor combinations and ingredients at Poppington’s are real foods. No powders or fake foods. And they even have a chef who comes up with ideas and makes them happen. He is one of the business partners and went to culinary school. He hadn’t really found his spot in the culinary community until he became a Popcorn Chef. It’s a thing and now you have new goals in life if you love popcorn and cooking.

So the Popcorn Chef uses all real food to make the 50 flavors available at Poppington’s and this is why they taste so good. This is why the cotton candy flavor tastes like cotton candy – because it is cotton candy – and why the dill pickle flavor tastes like dill pickles, because they are.

Looking Ahead for More Poppington’s Goodness

What’s the future look like for Poppington’s? Skyler tells me they are expanding fast and are always trying new flavors and taking the suggestions of their customers. I gave him a few ideas but am keeping them secret so you’ll have to just wait.

Poppington's Gourmet Popcorn
Poppington’s Gourmet Popcorn

If you love Poppington’s so much and want to send all the popcorn goodness to your friends around the country, Poppington’s ships their popcorn. Also, you can order little bags of popcorn for corporate events, weddings, parties, Christmas gifts, literally anything.

Special Poppington’s Gourmet Popcorn Gift for Kidding Around Readers

Skyler is one of the nicest guys you’ll meet. If you go to the shop, be sure to ask for him and he’ll be excited to talk to you and see you. He’s one of the most peoplest people persons I’ve ever met.

And because he’s so nice, he has given our Kidding Around readers a special code to use for 15% off their orders at Poppington. Use the code KAG15 for orders online.

Hours of Operation

Poppington’s is open during these hours but call ahead during snow or big storms to double-check before heading out:

Monday – Thursday: 11 am – 7 pm
Friday and Saturday: 11 am – 8 pm
Sunday: 12 pm – 5 pm

Perfect for Families: Scuffletown Food Truck Park Opens in Simpsonville, SC

Posted on |

Sadly, Scuffletown Food Truck Park will close its doors to the public on November 30th, 2024.

A new food truck park, the first of its kind in the Upstate, is open in Simpsonville, SC. There are six food trucks and a special addition for little kids. Read on to learn all about it.

When Justin and his wife, Allie, moved to the Upstate, they couldn’t find something they had become familiar with in their home out West: a dedicated spot for food trucks where families could hang out with each other and their kids could play. So they decided to start one.

The Scuffletown Food Truck Park opened in December 2023 and has been busy ever since. We’ve got all you need know to visit and have a blast with your family.

About the Scuffletown Food Truck Park

Justin and Allie knew they wanted a place in Simpsonville with a variety of dedicated food trucks and a space to have a fun time together for families, couples, and everyone in between.

Justin is a former firefighter but now runs the food truck park full-time. It has gotten a fantastic reception in the community and after visiting, it’s easy to see why. Imagine a smaller version of the outdoor space at Swamp Rabbit Cafe but with food trucks.

They have a picnic area enclosed on three sides, a taproom where guests can pour their own beers, a platform for bands, and a fully enclosed play area with a sand pit.

The Food Trucks

The food trucks at the park are all stationary and have their spot for a year. They have all kinds of food options from sweets to ramen to BBQ to Columbian cuisine.

Here’s a list of the food trucks at the park:

  • Too Sauc’D Up – they serve all kinds of chicken wings.
  • Rad Dad’s BBQ – they have BBQ, nachos, and grilled cheese.
  • Duck Donuts – they have amazing donuts.
  • BirriaBoy – they serve ramen, tacos, and burritos.
  • Half Rooted – they are a Columbian eatery with burgers, empanadas, arepas, and yuca fries.
  • One Love Fusion Foods – nachos, tacos, and rice bowls are their specialties.
Scuffletown Food Truck Park
Scuffletown Food Truck Park food truck

Having all these options are just perfect for families because people can have what they want. We got kids dishes at One Love Fusion and Rad Dad’s BBQ and they were both delicious. The BBQ kid nachos at One Love Fusion were especially amazing and pretty big for a kid size. The fries and pork sandwich at Rad Dad’s didn’t disappoint either. They had lots of BBQ sauces to choose from, which I really enjoyed.

Most of the food trucks we checked out had at least one dish that even the pickiest eaters will love.

The Taproom

The Taproom at the food truck park is pretty cool. It’s an entire wall of beer that is self-serve. You control the amount of beer you have and you are charged by the ounce.

I tried the Keeping It Teal from Snafu Brewing Company in North Charleston and whoa. It’s a fruity sour with raspberries and a hint of cotton candy. I’d have that again in a heartbeat.

Scuffletown Food Truck Park taproom

They have a large variety of beer and you can try as many as you like because you’re in charge of the pours. So fun.

If you need even more variety, there are canned beers available as well.

The Playground and Sand Pit

Here’s where the Scuffletown Food Truck Park really shines and where it’s incredibly obvious that Justin and Allie are parents.

The sand pit is huge and they have those small digging toys where you sit and pretend you’re a big dig operator. Please tell me I’m not the only one who does (*ahem, did*) this. There are sand toys and a small play apparatus.

And the entire area is totally fenced in. Fenced in. No kids are escaping. You can hang out with your delicious food and beer on a nearby picnic table under a heat lamp while your kids get their energy out in the playground. It’s absolutely perfect for parents and a much-needed addition to this area.

Hours of Operation

The hours are a little confusing as the taproom and food trucks all kind of operate on different schedules. Before you go, be sure to check the Scuffletown Food Truck website to make sure the truck you want or taproom is open.

Reader recommended restaurants with the best Chinese food in Spartanburg, South Carolina

I don’t know about you, but for as long as I can remember, whenever I’m feeling under the weather all I want is to sink into a serving of Chinese food! There’s just something therapeutic about sinking into a warm bowl of egg drop soup with a steamy pot of Oolong tea.

Hong Xing Chinese Restaurant

864. 949-8889 | 12175 West Greenville Hwy, Lyman
One of my favorite parts of a Chinese meal is the egg rolls, and they’ve got the best I’ve found in the Hub City. I usually order what my children refer to as “chicken lollipops,” pork fried rice, a spicy chicken dish for me, and several egg rolls. I order several more now that my children caught wind of how awesome they are. They are extremely busy on the weekends, so don’t wait until you are hangry to order.

Farmhouse Tacos

164 S. Main Street, Travelers Rest, 29690 | 864.610.0586
Farmhouse Tacos is proud of the dozens of local farms from which it sources its ingredients and a chalkboard at the restaurant proudly tells you where your meal’s ingredients comes from. Their menu includes a stunning array of tacos. My mind is on their Alabama Street taco, the Smokehouse Brisket taco, and the Nashville Hot Chicken taco.

Fireforge Crafted Beer

311 E. Washington Street, Greenville, 29601 | 864.300.4809
Located in downtown Greenville, Fireforge Crafted Beer‘s kitchen churns out small bites, shareable snacks, meals and even desserts that rely on locally-sourced ingredients as much as possible. Right now, I really want to order the Where’s Waldorf? sammie. I will follow it with the Cheesecake of the Week. Cheesecake is my love language.

Fork and Plough

1629 E. North Street, Greenville, 29607 | 864.609.4249
Located in the historic Overbrook neighborhood, Fork and Plough is what happens when two farmers and a chef collaborate. Plus it’s not just a restaurant: If you need a quick yummy meal their market and butcher counter has everything you need! Just last week, I nabbed a Shepherd’s Pie, a few slices of sweet potato cake, and a pack of adult beverages to go–all of which were delicious! Each time I go to Fork and Plough, I find some of my favorite comfort foods. My first time there involved a particularly good experience with a soft-shelled crab. Right now, their Baked Lobster Savannah is calling my name!

The Kennedy

221 E. Kennedy Street, Spartanburg, 29306 | 864.586.5554
The Kennedy keeps popping up on my radar and, after looking over their menu, I need to treat myself and make this happen. Duck Confit and Pork Shank aren’t often on the menu in my home and I’d delight in someone else making this for me! In addition to large plates like these, The Kennedy offers plates for sharing, sandwiches, salads, several sides, and desserts. The Kennedy is in downtown Spartanburg, about 30 minutes from Greenville.

The Lazy Goat

170 River Place, Greenville, 29601 | 864.679.5299
The Lazy Goat is an old favorite of mine. Visions of their fried goat cheese and Moroccan Lamb dance in my head. The globally-inspired menu includes small plates, pizzas, large plates, and family-style meals. With desserts like Orange Blossom Ice Cream and apple bread pudding on the menu, you should leave room for dessert!

Southside Smokehouse

726 S. Howard Avenue, Landrum, 29356 | 864.457.4581
Located about 40 minutes from Greenville, Southside Smokehouse‘s menu is all about Southern comfort food, such as barbecue and several Cajun and Creole dishes. And, y’all, their daily specials make me want to get in the car right now and include things like Chicken & Waffle Fries and Smoked Pork Nachos. The chef relies on vegetables from farms around Landrum, Tryon, and Columbus whenever possible.

Topsoil Kitchen & Market

13 S. Main Street, Travelers Rest, 29690 | 864.400.5424
Topsoil Kitchen & Market is located in Travelers Rest, and uses local ingredients while serving homemade bread, which is made in house every day. They offer plenty of vegan and vegetarian dishes as well as dishes for omnivores. With dishes such as Ramen, Fried Rice Bowl, Local Grass-fed, it will not disappoint!

Roost

220 North Main Street, Greenville | 864.298.2424
Roost is no newbie to Greenville, SC. It’s been here for a while and is known for its Southern, farm-to-table food. Roost is located on Noma Plaza in downtown Greenville and uses fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. They serve a breakfast buffet, lunch, and dinner. They also have good happy hour deals and this is a great place to gather with your friends and family, especially when you’re able to hear the sounds from live music events happening in the plaza.

Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery

Located right off the Swamp Rabbit Trail, the Swamp Rabbit Cafe & Grocery is another local favorite farm-to-table restaurant and market in one. At least half of their food offerings are sourced from within 150 miles of Greenville. It’s a great place to bring kids, too. Le Petit Croissant is Picnic Perfect

Posted on | 1 Comment

There is something romantic and precious about artisan-made desserts; not only do they taste good, but they make the sudden surge of calories quite worthwhile. At Le Petit Croissant, pastry chef and owner Vincent Cardonna can be seen working hard in his kitchen on a daily basis. The croissants are churned out fresh each morning accompanied by beautiful and delectable handmade chocolates and fine petit fours that beg for tea time.

Our visit to Le Petit Croissant

On our first visit, we went for a classic selection and filled our Eclipse picnic basket with croissants, éclairs, raspberry tarts, and quiches. Needless to say, the pastries didn’t last the 2:30 pm show time and were gobbled up by kids and adults alike. We promised ourselves we’d be back.

Le Petit Croissant describes itself as a bakery making European-style pastries with a twist. Recently, after a hearty lunch downtown, we walked over to the bakery to have our dessert. My petit four was called Butterfly Cake with its changing hues, and hubby had the Raspberry dome. Once again, our sweet craving ended on a high note.

And finally, about the chocolates. Have I told you about the chocolates? Cardonna is a master chocolatier. His creations are always infused with a unique combinations of flavor. You can build your own box, pick from their seasonal choices or purchase a chocolate or raspberry syringe for that quick boost! Le Petit Croissant is also fast becoming known for its Macaron, Pizza, Tarts or Croissant & Bread Workshops that are often sold out. You can sign up or form your own group at $40 – $65 per person, depending on the course. Also in the works are chocolate workshops for kids.

We are well aware that Greenville has no shortage of fabulous bakeries that make flakey croissants and unforgettable homemade pies. What makes Le Petit Croissant stand out is the purveyor’s willingness to offer something new: delightful fine desserts minus the stuffiness. It’s not a place to buy good ol’ birthday cakes in a flash. But it’s still a mom-and-pop shop, where the same baker who wakes up to churn fresh pastries is the same one who fashions whimsical chocolates for your little ones, and just might be the same person serving you. Whether it’s a craving for something sweet or savory, this little shop has given us something to look forward to on our strolls downtown at the Historic West End.

Trailside Brewing Co. Is Something Wonderful: Hendersonville, NC

Posted on |

If you’re looking for a spacious brewery that’s as friendly, welcoming, and beautiful as its brews are delicious, you’ll want to check out Trailside Brewing Co. in Hendersonville, NC. Whether you’re popping in after a day of apple picking with the family, or planning a fun couples night out, we think you’ll enjoy this special brewery. This is one we found on a recent date night, and now we’re sharing everything we loved about Trailside Brewing.

Beer at Trailside Brewing Co with live music in the beer garden.

About Trailside Brewing Company

Located in an old factory space beside what was once the Transylvania Railroad Line and now the soon-to-be-completed, Ecusta Trail, Trailside offers a gorgeous outdoor beer garden space complete with beautiful dahlias and vining greenery, strands of overhead lights, and two fire pits.

The indoor tasting room space is equally as inviting with long tables, high ceilings, and great big doors that open to the outside.

The brewing company has a wide range of brews to choose from as well as wine and even a few non-alcoholic options. They’re both pet and family-friendly and have a great line-up of live music most weekends, plus awesome food trucks parked right up front.

You can find their lineup of food trucks, live music, and other events on the Trailside Brewing Co. Event page.

To Bring the Kids or Not

Trailside Brewing Co. is the perfect place for a casual date night or a night out with friends, but it’s also family-friendly and pet-friendly. Bring a board game for a family game night, or bring the kids to enjoy some music and a fire.

Parents should note that while the space is fabulous and welcoming, there isn’t any playground-type equipment, so kids shouldn’t come expecting to run and climb.

When we visited for our date night there were also lots of families and pets, but it wasn’t chaotic, crowded, or in any way rambunctious at all. Everyone seemed to be having a great time enjoying Trailside. together.

Food Trucks

We deviate slightly from this review of Trailside Brewing Co to tell you that on the night we visited Trailside, the Groovy Grease Wagon food truck was parked out front. If you are ever fortunate enough to come upon the Groovy Grease Wagon, jump up and down, do a little dance, and then order the fried chicken sandwich. It’s the best ever, hands down, crunchy and juicy, the perfect chicken sandwich.

It goes really well with the Oktoberfest beer.

Beer at Trailside Brewing

Trailside’s beer is locally made and seasonal. They are made in-house or at one of Trailside’s sister breweries. We tried the Community Brew Stout, Oktoberfest, Front Porch Pilsner, and the Hammock Haven, which is a blonde ale. They were all fabulous.

After you’ve tried some and found a favorite, you can even purchase a growler can to bring some home. They fill it right there at the bar and seal it up. The beer stays fresh for about a week. We know this because my husband really enjoyed the Hammock Haven blonde ale so much so that he asked when we closed our tab about cans.

So, while they don’t sell pre-canned beer, they do have a neat can growlers you can purchase if you plan to drink your purchase within about a week.

Where is Trailside Brewing, Hendersonville?
