Experience Gifts Greenville, SC and Spartanburg, SC

Being a mom, I hang out with lots of moms and one topic of conversation comes up pretty frequently, the massive amounts of “stuff” that our kids accumulate. Over Christmas, there is one solution that I think is brilliant: buy a gift that doesn’t take up space. Creating a memory is priceless. Spending time as a family is essential. These are experiences that will bring smiles, build up families, and won’t end up in a donation bin. You’ll also find some great ideas (Culinary Tour, anyone?) for the grown-ups in your life too!

Good Gifts No Matter Where You Live

While the Upstate has plenty to offer, there are plenty of good clutter-busting and memory-making gifts to be found in almost any community.

Happy Hive

With Happy Hive Bee Co.’s Adopt-a-Hive Program, you can gift a year of bee-filled fun — no beekeeping gear required!

Each adoption includes:

  • 🐝 Sponsored hive in an SC apiary
  • 📸 Monthly updates with photos and videos
  • 🍯 Jars of honey from their bees
  • 🎉 An invite to a spring pollinator picnic and hive visit

It’s the perfect gift for nature-loving kids (and grown-ups too)!

South Carolina State Park Passport– State Park Passports are great for families who love the outdoors. The All Park Passport is $99 and gives you access to all 48 state parks, including some lighthouses. And if you’re shopping for someone who doesn’t live in South Carolina, there is surely a similar program for their home state’s park system!

Nail or Spa Gift Certificates – A spa gift certificate is another excellent choice – especially for busy moms. One of our local favorites is Drift Float! Buy a float for someone in your life who needs to relax (or yourself, no judgment here). We did it and it was awesome. There is also an amazing head and scalp spa now in Greenville that Kristina got to try out.

Pool Memberships – Even though it is too cold to swim right now, you can always plan ahead. Purchase a family pool membership so the kids can enjoy the pool all summer long. (This may have to be a gift card until pool registration opens up, but make it fun by gifting it with some goggles and inflatables!)

Photography – Book a local photographer to capture photographs of your family – and don’t forget to print them out to give to the gift recipient!

Indoor Play Ideas (check our rainy day guide for a massive list of places that offer bouncing or play during the day)

Meal Delivery Services / Grocery Delivery – Help out a busy family by paying the fee for a meal delivery or grocery delivery service such as Shipt (for groceries) or Hello Fresh (for meals). Need inspiration? See how you can Get Those Groceries Delivered in Upstate, SC!

Gift cards to local restaurants – My family always loves receiving gift cards to local restaurants since we don’t eat out often. In addition to the many chain restaurant gift card options, most local Spartanburg restaurants offer gift cards as well.

Subscription Boxes – Subscription boxes are all the rage and there are a ton to choose from! Most subscription boxes allow you to choose the increment (monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly). Plus, they offer them for kids (i.e., books, arts & crafts) and adults (i.e., coffee, adult beverages, to name a few). While I’ve never tried it, I’ve heard other parents say that they love Kiwi Crate and try Tinker Crate for older children. There are also local subscription boxes you can pick up directly, like Big Play in a Box.

Streaming Services Subscriptions (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sling) – Help a family cut the cord by paying for a subscription to a streaming TV service.

Summer Camp – Summer camp is an amazing gift. Many places will soon open their registrations. My child had a blast last summer at Conestee Camp with Greenville Rec and Space Camp at The Children’s Museum of the Upstate. If you need inspiration, check out our massive Summer Camp Guide!

Attractions Dining & Value Guide – One of my absolute favorite ideas is the Attractions Book. You can purchase them online and they are offered for Greenville, Spartanburg, and several other parts of South Carolina. It supports local businesses and the coupons are quite good. It would make an excellent stocking stuffer! Ask around as many schools and non-profits sell this book as a fundraiser.

National Gingerbread Competition: Make Asheville’s Grove Park Inn A Christmas Tradition For Your Family

Posted on |

Have you heard about the National Gingerbread Competition in Asheville, NC? Hansel and Gretel wouldn’t miss this Grove Park Inn Christmas extravaganza. It showcases dozens of gingerbread houses and holiday decorations galore! Luckily, you don’t have to worry about the waistline because this is a feast for the eyes, not the stomach.

The charming Grove Park Inn in Asheville is a seasonal delight you won’t want to miss this holiday season. And who knows, once inspired, maybe you’ll find yourself building a gingerbread house with the kiddos?

This article was originally published on Femme au foyer.

The Annual Gingerbread Competition at Asheville’s Grove Park Inn

The famous gingerbread house competition at the Grove Park Inn is a favorite winter activity for families.

The 2025 viewing dates are November 18, 2025 through January 4, 2026. If you are not staying at the resort, you are invited to view the displays after 6 PM on Sundays or anytime Monday through Thursday based on parking availability and excluding holidays and the following dates: November 27, December 7, 23, 24, 25, 26, 30, 31 and January 1. All Fridays and Saturdays are reserved for registered resort guests and those that have confirmed dining reservations. During the Gingerbread season, display access is subject to hotel capacity, including pedestrian traffic. Only registered resort pets are allowed, and no outside pets are permitted.

The gingerbread houses are as diverse as they are amazing; on our last visit, we saw everything from clock towers to sleighs to igloos to skate parks. The entries must be constructed entirely of edible materials with the exception of the base, but the ingenuity in construction is simply remarkable.

There are four entry categories: adult, teen, youth and child, and entries are judged on overall appearance, originality and creativity, difficulty, precision and consistency of theme.

While there is no admission charge to view the display, although there is a $30 fee to park. Half of this fee goes to local non-profits.

For more information on the gingerbread competition visit the website, and make sure to keep a lookout for entries from the Upstate. In previous years, an entry from Greer placed second in the teen category, while a Greenville entry in the child category received an honorable mention.

Holiday Decorations at Omni Grove Park Inn

All decorated areas of the hotel may not be available to those who are not registered guests staying at the hotel.

As you walk through the hotel viewing the gingerbread competition winners, you’ll see more than a few Christmas trees decorated in all sorts of motifs. My boys’ favorite part of the visit was discovering the elaborate ornaments on these themed trees, deciding on their favorites, and planning which decorations we should have in our home. The giant Christmas tree in the lobby is a perfect place for a family photo, the entire Great Hall filled with the smell of the giant evergreen.

The enormous fire places in the Great Hall are adorned with wreaths, heat radiating out to warm those seated in the area.  One year, there was a gingerbread house in the hall, built by the pastry department. The ingredients included 50 pounds of egg whites, 440 pounds of powdered sugar, 220 pounds of red fondant and 400 pounds of bread flower!

Visitors could purchase hot beverages and gingerbread from the gingerbread house, and then settle into the giant rocking chairs near the fireplace with hot chocolate to enjoy the holiday bustle.  Spend a little more time than just a couple of minutes in the rocking chairs – sitting by a roaring fire in a relaxing chair is part of the mystique of the Inn that should not be glossed over.

The Grounds of Grove Park Inn

The original Grove Park Inn was built in 1913 and over the years has grown to encompass a golf course, spa, sports complex, five restaurants, three bars and a café.

To truly appreciate the scenic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains it is worth stepping out onto the veranda, or even descending down into the gardens and spa area. This descent via outdoor stone staircases is also a good use of the kids’ extra energy; ask them to take a photo of the Inn from the lowest level.

The view of the front of the hotel is also quite grand, and after imagining the long-ago sound of horse-drawn carriages rattling across the cobblestones you might want to take a short stroll. From the front of the hotel up to Sunset Mountain is a short hiking trail that is appropriate for all skill levels and ages that will let you work off whatever delectable you may have bought at the Inn, but will also let you appreciate the spectacular natural setting of the Grove Park Inn.

Then, as you set off on the drive home take a minute to determine whether you should enter next year’s Gingerbread Competition – or once more return as a spectator to this wonderful annual event.

Beyond the Birth: How Healing Your Pelvic Floor Can Support Breastfeeding and Your Baby’s Comfort

Posted on |

If you’ve ever felt like postpartum recovery is one big game of whack-a-mole,  fix one thing and another pops up,  you are definitely not alone. Maybe your back aches, your pelvic area feels off, your baby struggles to latch, or you’re just plain sore. It can feel like a dozen little problems that don’t seem connected, but guess what? They actually are!

Your pelvic floor, your posture, and your baby’s feeding comfort are part of the same team. When one is out of balance, the others often struggle too, and that’s something few new moms are told before leaving the hospital.

Don’t miss the special giveaway below.

Special thanks to Elevate Women’s Health Physical Therapy + Lactation for sponsoring this article and giveaway and providing such wonderful information.

Elevate Women's Health Physical Therapy + Lactation Support

How Elevate Women’s Health Can Support Your Postpartum Journey

Postpartum healing doesn’t have to mean powering through pain or waiting for things to “get better on their own.” Taking care of your pelvic floor and body now can make every part of motherhood,  from feeding to chasing after a toddler one day, easier and more enjoyable.

Whitney at Elevate Women’s Health PT + Lactation brings together over 15 years of experience as a pelvic floor therapist, lactation consultant, and craniosacral fascial therapist. She helps moms and babies feel their best, comfortably, confidently, and connected from the very start.

Pelvic Floor Therapy in Greenville, SC: More Than Just Bladder Control

When most people hear “pelvic floor physical therapy,” they picture someone trying not to pee when they sneeze. But it’s so much more than that. Pelvic floor therapy is really about helping your body feel aligned, strong, and comfortable again, from your core to your shoulders.

After birth, your body goes through a lot. Pelvic floor therapy can help you sit and nurse without pain, ease that tight or tender scar tissue (yes, even from a C-section), and help you move and lift your baby with confidence again. When your muscles are working together properly, you can relax more easily, and your baby feels that calm energy, too.

It’s amazing how much smoother feeding can be when your body feels good. Shoulder and back pain often lessen, posture improves, and you might even notice your baby relaxing more during feeds.

Elevate Women's Health Physical Therapy + Lactation Support

Lactation: Comfort Matters Just as Much as Milk

A good breastfeeding relationship isn’t only about milk supply; it’s about comfort, connection, and confidence. If you’re wiggling in your seat or can’t find a pain-free position because of a sore pelvic floor or cesarean scar, that discomfort can make latching harder for your baby (and more painful for you).

Pelvic floor therapy can make all the difference here, helping you find positions that actually feel good, support your body, and take pressure off your neck, back, and shoulders. When you’re comfortable, feeds go more smoothly, and you can focus on the sweet part, bonding with your baby!

Craniosacral Fascial Therapy: Gentle Relief for Babies (and Moms, Too)

Let’s talk about a therapy that sounds fancy but feels wonderfully gentle: craniosacral fascial therapy, or CFT. This hands-on therapy helps release tiny areas of tension in the head, neck, spine, and pelvis, areas that can tighten up during birth for both mom and baby.

For babies, that tension can show up as a tricky latch, fussiness during feeds, or even sleep and digestion struggles. For moms, it’s often felt in the shoulders, jaw, or neck, spots that already take a beating from pregnancy, birth, and hours of feeding. CFT helps both of you relax, which makes those early days together a lot more peaceful.

The Power of Combining Care

Now imagine this: your pelvic floor therapy helps you sit comfortably and move without pain. Your lactation consultant guides you through better positioning and latch techniques. Your baby gets gentle craniosacral support to help their little body feed more easily. Suddenly, things start to click, feedings feel calmer, your body feels stronger, and you both feel more in sync.

That’s the magic of treating the whole picture, not just one piece at a time.

When to Reach Out for Help

Every mom and baby can benefit from this kind of care, but it can be especially helpful if you’re dealing with ongoing pelvic or back pain, tender scar tissue, or a baby who struggles to latch or seems fussy and uncomfortable. If you ever feel like “something’s off” but can’t put your finger on it, that’s your cue; it’s absolutely worth checking in with a professional who understands how all these systems work together.

Have we been trick-or-treating wrong all these years?

An Amble with Gamble: Stories from the parenting trenches

Is your family getting ready for the Halloween tradition of door-to-door trick-or-treating? As you prepare, here’s a humorous reflection of previous Halloweens and the trick-or-treat experience.

-Come take a stroll down memory lane with me-

Halloween Chili- a new kind of trick or treat

I definitely would not put myself in the Halloween enthusiast category. I mean, I like dressing up my kids and eating 3 Musketeers as much as any human being should but hanging skeletons from my front porch and pretending to be an axe- murderer is just not my idea of a good time. To each his own, though.

I managed to avoid Halloween festivities for the last six years, but this year, the kids were adamant that they wanted to pick out costumes and join in the neighborhood excitement.

Fine.

But why do kids always choose the costume that suddenly doesn’t come in their size? My 8 year-old wanted to be Ironman which, to daft little me, seemed fairly mainstream. How hard could it be?

I could find every other superhero costume known to the galaxy in a size medium, but not Ironman. No.

One Halloween Express and two Walmarts later, we finally tracked down a size medium Ironman costume. The Lord was testing me. I don’t know if you’ve ever traversed a Halloween Express and two Walmarts in one afternoon with four children under 8 years old, but let me assure you, it’s above your paygrade.

Children in costume
My children looking despondent pre-trick-or-treating. Don’t let their expressions fool you. They were wildly excited.

My 3-year-old girl had her own hopes and dreams of being Spidergwen for Halloween. For the record, I was thrilled by her decision. The character of Spidergwen is pretty boss if you ask me, so my daughter’s spunky, ballet-dancing self would have been the perfect Gwen Stacy!

Alas. Let me tell you what I found: the only companies manufacturing toddler-size Spider Gwen costumes also seem like the type of factories heavy into human trafficking and slavery. I’m not even joking around here. The locations were highly suspect.

While I now realize that probably any costume I purchased from the big box store came from one of those locations, I couldn’t, in good conscience, order directly from the operation. There went my poor girl’s aspirations.

Don’t fret, though. She settled on an Elsa costume two sizes too small for her at Walmart—as one does—and could not have been more excited on Halloween night with her arms wedged into tiny glitter mesh tubes up to her elbows. Kind of reminded me of a burst can of biscuits, but in the cutest way possible.

While the five of us were out enjoying the cool night and gusty winds, we had the unique experience of being offered chili at two locations.

Chili. Like the soup with beans.

Now, I love chili—heavy on the sour cream, please—and it is certainly weather-appropriate this time of year, but how on earth am I supposed to consume a bowl of chili while keeping my children out of the street? This was all new to me. Do you just ladle it into the bucket? What’s the protocol here? Seemed unconventional, at best.

So what did I do? I took the ding-dang chili, of course!

And wolfed down three to four bites on each porch. Trust me on this one. WORTH THE CHALLENGE. While the threat of being poisoned by strychnine was certainly there, I took that risk because chili should never be declined.

Many a dad was nursing their own bowl of chili, so I was in good company—just missing a full beard and camo jacket. That Piedmont Life, I tell you. Several mothers looked at me like I was an imposter, but I suppose that comes with the territory when you’re clearly enjoying yourself with four happy, costumed kids in tow. We are a rare breed.

At any rate, the real case on the chili front is that I was so full when we arrived home that I didn’t eat a single piece of Halloween candy! Could this be because I had to give baths and put four kids on speed to bed? Highly probable. Could it also be that I hid the Halloween buckets in an inconvenient place upon our arrival home? Likely answers all around!

But I’m putting all my coins into the chili bucket–the unsung hero of Halloween in South Carolina. Friends, whip out those crockpots and styrofoam cups and be the toast of the town.

Chili 2025 for Office. Don’t even bother with cilantro. No one wants that when there are Reese’s Cups to be had.
