Piano Central Studios: Where Music Grows with Your Family

Posted on |

Are you searching for music lessons that will grow with your family? Whether you have a baby who lights up when they hear music, a school-age child begging to take lessons, or a grandparent who is revisiting their love of music, Piano Central Studios can help deepen their musical interests and develop their musical skills.  Thank you to Piano Central Studios for sponsoring this article!

Piano Central Studios

For over four decades, Piano Central Studios has helped people discover and reignite their joy for music. The studio has become a go-to for local families looking to connect with their innate love of music and musical talent. Offering classes and lessons for babies through adults of all ages, PCS works hard to make every student feel connected and supported, like part of a musical family. Learn why families across the Upstate love their experience at Piano  Central Studios!

Kindermusik at Piano Central Studios

Locally Loved Since 1979

Unlike a lot of national chain music studios, Piano Central Studios has called Greenville home since the very beginning. PCS’s Greenville roots run deep, with the studio opening its doors in  1979. PCS’s current owner, Theresa Case, has grown the studio to be Greenville’s largest and oldest music school, with two convenient studio locations and lessons taught on campus for students enrolled at Christ Church Episcopal School.

Because PCS is rooted right here in Greenville, you’ll get that extra level of care and connection only a local studio can offer. Strong, lasting relationships between the students and teachers at  PCS have created a beautiful, multigenerational community. Now, many students from the past are bringing their children and grandchildren for lessons and embracing the PCS mission of  “nourishing hearts and minds with music making for life”.

The Piano Central Studios Experience

Connection, care, and customization are just a few of the things that families mention when they talk about their PCS experience. That’s because the goal of PCS is for families to feel as if they belong and are part of something bigger than themselves, not just signing up for lessons. PCS does this by offering a progression path and music learning that is customized to fit the age, needs,  and interests of each student.

Kindermusik families at PCS enjoy access to the Kindermusik app, unlimited makeup classes while enrolled, a free music Love Bag twice a year, milestones certificates, and more!

Lesson students thrive with recitals, performance parties, group musicianship classes, digital lesson assignments, the PCS Milestones Awards Program, and the Practice Space App.

All families receive access to the PCS app, which keeps everything they need conveniently available at the touch of a button. These extras are a wonderful enhancement to the PCS  experience, making it a top-notch program for families and students of all ages.

Music Lessons For Everyone!

When Piano Central Studios says they offer music lessons for everyone, they mean it!

From babies and toddlers, children just starting music lessons, teens exploring new skills, adults wanting to learn something new, and advanced students honing their craft, you’ll find lessons for all at  PCS.

Kindermusik Classes: Newborn to Age 7

Kindermusik offers young children the opportunity to explore music through various stages. These classes and music lessons occur weekly throughout the year and build on skills as your child progresses.   With six age-appropriate levels from Foundations through Level 5, very young children can progress through the program, growing musical skills and beginning a lifelong love of music.

In Kindermusik, families explore and play a variety of instruments, move and dance, develop listening skills, participate in Story Time, and learn musical concepts, all with the love and support of their grown-ups. Classes range from 45  minutes to 1 hour a week.

Group Lessons: Ages 6 – 9

Group lessons in piano and voice are available at both studio locations with their Piano Express and  Studio Singers programs. These classes give students the opportunity to learn from each other and socialize while they learn new songs, play games, do theory, and develop their technique. Group lessons are 1 hour long and meet once per week, with mid-afternoon to early evening lessons available.

Private Lessons: Ages 6 – Adult

Private lessons at PCS are available at the Pleasantburg and Woodruff Road locations.
30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute private lessons are available, and enrollment includes recitals, performance classes, contests, special events, and an awards program.

One-on-one instruction is offered for these instruments:

  • Piano
  • Voice
  • Guitar
  • Ukulele
  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Saxophone
  • French Horn
  • Oboe
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Voice

PCS also offers lessons right on campus at Christ Church Episcopal School. Private lessons in piano, violin, and viola are available. 30-minute or 45-minute lessons are available and also include the same perks as the studio locations, including recitals, performance classes,  contests, special events, and an awards program.

What PCS Families are Saying

If you are looking for insight into the studio, look no further than local family reviews! Google reviews for both locations are spectacular, with many reviews highlighting the patience, kindness, and dedication that  Piano Central Studio instructors show to their students. Here’s what a few local families are saying about  their PCS experience:

See for Yourself Through Spectacular Reviews!

Pristine Island, a Splash Park, & Cabins: Lake Hartwell at Big Water Marina

Posted on |

Inside: A real mom review of Big Water Marina on Lake Hartwell.

Have you been to Big Water Marina?
Lake Hartwell is home to this combination aqua park, campground, restaurant, and watersport hub! It is just an hour from Greenville, SC, and has tons of family-friendly entertainment, food, water options, and even beautiful cabins. So stay for a day, a weekend, or a week! Media tickets were provided to Splash Island for this review.

I came to the Big Water Marina at Lake Hartwell for Splash Island but stayed for the relaxing island vibe and really wish I could have ended our day watching the sunset from the restaurant, J.R. Cash’s, but had to get back home – which, thankfully, was only an hour drive back to Greenville. There are some pretty intense Margaritaville vibes happening here, which truly will leave you relaxed and happy and wanting to return.

It’s not just the amazing Splash Island waterpark with a floating obstacle course that shines here. It’s the tiny cabins, the delicious cuisine at the restaurant, the hammocks on the beach, the chill pirate ship playground right next to the restaurant, and the staff that make this place so cool. I’m here to tell you all about it.

Giant aqua park at Splash Island in Anderson, South Carolina

About the Big Water Marina: Lake Hartwell

The family-friendly atmosphere is immediately apparent at the marina and campground and once I met one of the owners, Trey Boggs, a fifth-generation Anderson, SC resident, who has three daughters of his own, it was easy to figure out why. He spoke my language immediately as he explained how his kids just love the aqua park so much and get so worn out while the parents chill on the beach in the sand – or join in on the fun if they want.

“If the kids aren’t having fun, they are going to whine about leaving, and parents won’t have any fun either,” Trey said.

Isn’t that the truth? There’s no danger of that happening at the Big Water Marin,a thankfully. Trey and his brother bought the marina back in 2017 and gradually added more acreage as time went on so that today, the marina is now about 200 acres in total and an island unto itself with multiple RV slots, boat slips, Splash Island, a restaurant, and shop.

Splash Island Waterpark

Splash Island is an interlocking floating obstacle course on Lake Hartwell at the Big Water Marina. Wibit is a German company that manufactures the actual parts of the obstacle course and they are moveable to create new routes or add onto existing obstacles. This is the second Wibit course I’ve run (well, tried to run, more like slipped around) and it’s so much fun!

The course as they have it set up now is more than 80 feet long and is in deep enough water where you can safely jump off the highest obstacles and into the nice, warm water. They have monkey bars and running obstacles similar to the show, Wipeout, which I love to watch and laugh at all the people falling into the water. Now that I’ve done it myself, people are laughing at me falling into the water after failing to make it across some obstacle.

Splash Island aqua park
About to wipeout

My kids had such a blast and time just flew by. We were on the course for about two hours but it didn’t even feel that long except that we were completely and utterly exhausted. That thing is a major workout! Kids need to be 46 inches tall to do it by themselves. Kids under that height can still do it but they will need to have a parent or guardian with them on the course.

There was always a staff member on the course paying close attention to the kids – and adults – running it and just making sure everyone was safe. You have to wear lifejackets to do the course as well, which are provided. Tickets are $15/hour or $25/two hours. Splash Island is opening the weekend of May 18th, 2025 for the season.

The Beach & Other Water Rentals

There’s a good size beach with sand at Big Water Marina in front of Splash Island. And they have chairs and hammocks and strung lights and picnic tables and I never wanted to leave. It was so relaxing. You don’t need to be doing the water obstacle course in order to use the beach and there is no charge to park or to be admitted to the sandy space on the lake. Pets can be there but they must be leashed and owners must clean up after them.

Big Water Marina Beach

Big Water Marina at Lake Hartwell also rents paddleboards, kayaks, hydrobikes, and pontoon boats. I didn’t know what a hydrobike was and the good people at the marina let me try one. They are fun! You basically just work it like you’re riding a bike, super easy but also a little tiring. You have to wear a lifejacket and kids ages 8+ who can reach the pedals can ride one. They are $25/hour but also are available for day and weekly rentals.

If a hydrobike isn’t up your alley, give a paddleboard or a kayak a try. I personally love paddleboarding and find it to be an excellent water activity.

Pontoon boat rentals, which can fit up to 13 people, start at $350 for a half day (four hours). You can rent by half day, full day, sunset cruise, or a weekly rental.

Tiny Cabins

I have a thing for tiny houses. My dream is to live in one somewhere in the woods and read all the books I want. But until I can do that, I’m always on the hunt for awesome tiny cabins to stay in and I’ve finally found the perfect – and I mean, perfect – one at the Big Water Marina campground.

I got a tour of a one bedroom tiny cabin with a double loft (so a loft on both sides of the house), full kitchen, living area, bathroom, and porch and I want it so bad. I wanted to take that little cabin with me to my non-existent plot of land in a forest somewhere. It was so cute and beautiful and decorated with a rustic minimalism. There are ladders that lead to each loft that kids would just love and the master bedroom was gorgeous. They face west so you’ll get to enjoy a glass of wine on the porch and watch a stunning sunset. Trey tells me the sunsets there rival those of Key West. I’m gonna need to test that out.

Inside of a tiny cabin at Big Water Marina in Anderson, South Carolina

There are one bedroom and two bedroom cabins. The one bedroom ones can fit a family of six and the two bedroom cabins can fit up to seven people. Cabins can generally fit between four and seven people comfortably. If a weekend getaway is on your mind or a quick summer family trip, this is the place. You’re saving on gas, you have the water and beach for activities, a restaurant to eat at or a kitchen in your cabin to cook in, and Splash Island to wear the kids out at. Prices vary for the different cabins and seasons.

J.R. Cash’s Grill & Bar

The restaurant on site at the marina, J.R. Cash’s Grill & Bar, has some Margaritaville vibes going on, complete with open air dining overlooking the lake, teal chairs, and strung lights. The food is upscale bar food with burgers, fish platters, chicken tenders, and shrimp, plus a creative cocktail menu.

View of Lake Hartwell

On the suggestion of one of the staff members down at Splash Island, we got an order of the Chicken Tenders and oh my gosh, these chicken tenders were the most tender, flavorful and light chicken tenders I’ve ever had. The honey mustard sauce was really good as well. I may have to go back to this place just for these chicken tenders. We also tried a burger, which was super tasty. But oh, those chicken tenders.

Besides the chicken tenders at J.R. Cash’s, the pirate ship playground really made this place stand out. There is a legit pirate ship that has slides, swinging rings, rope ladders, and even a covered bow. So cool. My kids really loved this and once again, Big Water Marina proved they know what parents want when going out to dinner – a place for the kids to play and them to enjoy their drinks and food. The play area also had a hammock and tire swing for the bigger kids.

Honest Mom Review of Big Water Marina

I’ve been to a lot of neat places in our area but really, really loved this one for a few reasons. I felt that the owners thoughtfully took into consideration the needs of families to have quality time together in a fun and safe environment without having to even leave if they were staying at the campground. Everything they need is right there and it’s set up for maximum enjoyment. I was also so impressed by the staff members. They were attentive and kind and interacted with my kids and were just cool people. You could tell they liked being there.

I think the biggest shocker for me was that this place was only an hour away from Greenville. An hour! This is easily a day trip or a weekend trip if I can snag one of those tiny homes. I can’t wait to see what Trey and his family does next at the Big Water Marina.

Tips on Visiting the Big Water Marina: Lake Hartwell

There are a few important things to note if you want to visit the marina and Splash Island.

Aeriel view of Big Water Marina
Aerial photo provided by Big Water Marina
  • Splash Island is open Friday-Sunday until Memorial Day Weekend and then Thursday-Sunday during the summer so don’t go on Monday and expect to achieve all your Wipeout dreams. Check the schedule before you go. They are open 10 am – 6 pm. The management has been turned over since we went so the experience may be a little different.
  • Purchase your tickets online to ensure your spot at Splash Island. They do take walk-ins as well. The cost for an hour is $15 and for two hours is $25.
  • Height and age restrictions: You have have to be 7 or older OR at least 42″ tall.
  • J.R. Cash’s restaurant is open Thursday-Sunday. We went to Splash Island first and then to eat and it worked out great since we were so hungry after doing the floating obstacle course.
  • You can bring chairs, tents, and coolers to the beach. There’s no admission or parking charge.
  • Bring water and a change of clothes. I hate driving around in a wet bathing suit and it’s hot so you really need to make sure you’re hydrated.
  • Restrooms and showers are available near the restaurant for the public to use.

The Ultimate Guide To All Seven School Districts in Spartanburg, SC

Posted on |

Have questions about Spartanburg County schools? With seven different Spartanburg County school districts, it can be a little confusing for newcomers or parents with rising kindergartners. We are breaking down the different districts and providing the most used info, so parents can easily navigate the schools in Spartanburg, SC.

spartanburg county schools

A Little About Spartanburg County School Districts

Spartanburg County is the fifth-most populated county in the state of South Carolina, with a population of almost 370,000. Spartanburg County schools serve over 55,000 students.

For those who have relocated to the area, the primary difference about the schools in Spartanburg is that there is not a central Spartanburg County School District. Instead, Spartanburg County schools are operated by seven different school districts; each school district operates as its own entity.

There is not a singular Spartanburg County school district or one school board website, but each of the seven Spartanburg County School Districts has a website where you can find the information you need for each school.

We have also created the Guide to Spartanburg Private Schools, which not only lists all the contact information and website links for each public school district but also lists charter, virtual, and private school options in Spartanburg.

Applying For School Choice In Spartanburg County School Districts

Spartanburg County School Districts offer parents the option of applying for limited school choice. Students may attend another school in the same district if there is space available. School choice application windows open in March each year. Remaining in the program is dependant on discipline and attendance.

However, once a student is accepted, in most cases, their place is secured for the duration of their attendance at that particular school. Any younger siblings would also be grandfathered in. Availability varies by district, as well as school, and other circumstances. School choice applicants are not able to ride the school bus home, as the buses that service that school would not be zoned for your neighborhood.

Should parents want their child to attend a school in a different Spartanburg County District, students would need to apply for out-of-district status and be accepted. Additionally, out-of-district residents are required to pay out-of-district tuition of several thousand dollars per school year for their children to attend. This includes the option to transfer to the Greenville County School District.

Quick Guide To The Seven Spartanburg School Districts

More information about each district in not only Spartanburg County, but the entire state, can be found on the South Carolina Department of Education’s Website.

The Great School’s Website can provide parents with additional information, like school ratings and ratio information. The ratio is the average student-to-teacher ratio and is an important factor when selecting a school.

Ruby Falls is the Tallest Underground Waterfall You Can Visit in the USA

Posted on |

Looking for an unforgettable family nature experience that’s perfect for all sorts of weather? Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, TN checks all the boxes! This underground wonder stays a comfy 60 degrees year-round, offers incredible natural sights without the need for major hiking skills, and makes for an awesome adventure in the heart of one of Tennessee’s most vibrant cities.

This waterfall is 1120 feet underground: Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, TN

💧 Ruby Falls: Fast Facts

Height: 90 feet (just the visible part — it goes even higher!)
Location: The waterfall is 1120 feet underground in Lookout Mountain. Getting there: Descend 260 feet underground in Lookout Mountain inside a glass-front elevator.
Age: The cave is estimated to be 30 million years old
Claim to Fame: The tallest underground waterfall open to the public in the U.S.
Bonus: You’ll see it during a guided tour, complete with lights and music!

A Hidden Waterfall 1120 Feet Underground

Tucked inside Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Ruby Falls is home to the tallest underground waterfall open to the public in the U.S. You’ll start your journey with an elevator ride that drops you 260 feet below the surface, and that’s just the beginning.

Our family took the Cave Walk to the Waterfall, a one-mile round-trip guided tour to and from the falls that takes a little over an hour to complete.

Watch! Take a Closer Look at Ruby Falls

When the falls were first discovered in 1928, you could only reach the falls by crawling through narrow passageways, so a path was created to open the falls to the public. This path is fairly easy to walk through for a cave. It has lights, rails in parts, and is fairly smooth. The path is not wheelchair or stroller accessible, and it’s a cave, so there is moisture dripping at times on the floor and lower ceilings.

Steak and Potatoes at Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, TN

This particular cave tour focuses on the history of the discovery of the falls and the creation of Ruby Falls. It’s lighthearted and full of jokes. The formations that on the way to and from the falls are even named funny names based on what they look like, such as the “Steak and Potato”.

For those that are able to walk the full trail but might need more breaks, a Gentle Walking Tour is available that takes a slower pace and allows breaks to sit.

3 Reasons to Add Ruby Falls to Your Family Travel List:

  • It’s always the perfect temperature. Rain or shine, summer or winter — the cave stays a comfy 60 degrees year-round, making it a fun pick no matter the season.
  • It’s adventure without the stress. No extreme hiking here! The cave trail is smooth and manageable for most kids and adults, with lights and rails to help guide the way.
  • It’s got serious wow-factor. A 90+ foot underground waterfall with a light show? Yep, it’s just as amazing as it sounds — and it blew our teens away.

The Wow Moment: Ruby Falls

Let’s talk about that waterfall. Ruby Falls plunges 90 feet inside a cavern room, and it is every bit as dramatic as it sounds. A light show brings the falls to life, and honestly, it was beautiful. Everyone on the tour from teens to young children were impressed.

🕰️ How Ruby Falls Got Its Name

Back in 1928, explorer Leo Lambert was digging an elevator shaft into Lookout Mountain when he discovered a hidden cavern with a roaring underground waterfall. He named it Ruby Falls after his wife, Ruby — and thanks to his adventurous spirit, families can now visit this incredible natural wonder without having to crawl through narrow rock tunnels! Today, over 500,000 people a year come to see what Leo found nearly a century ago.

Know Before You Go: Ruby Falls Chattanooga, Tennessee

Bathrooms and food: Use the restroom before you head underground and grab a snack — there are no bathrooms or food on the tour.

Tours are timed: Once you’re in the cave, you’re committed. The tour doesn’t allow early exits, so gauge your child’s comfort level with dark, enclosed spaces before booking.

Lantern Tour option: While we didn’t try it, the Lantern Tour looks like a fun (and slightly spooky) alternative for older kids and teens. This tour is lit only by carried lanterns and has a smaller group.

Early morning and late evening tours tend to have smaller groups, especially during school holidays! Our tour was only around 20 people which made it easier to hear our guide and see the falls. Some of the tours can be as large as 50 people.

Flash photography isn’t permitted, but you can take non-flash photos during the tour and at the waterfall. You will not be permitted to stop to take photos on the route to and from the falls.

Don’t Miss the View

After the cave, we climbed the Lookout Mountain Tower, and it was an amazing view. You can see the Tennessee River, Chattanooga, and the Cumberland Plateau. It’s the perfect spot for a family photo after the cave tour.

  • Arrive 15-30 minutes early to check in and ensure you are on time for your tour.
  • Book online as tours often fill up.
  • Parking is free.
  • Flash photography isn’t permitted, but you can take non-flash photos during the tour and at the waterfall. You will not be permitted to stop to take photos on the route to and from the falls.
  • Wear comfy shoes with good grips — the walk is just under a mile round-trip.
  • You may want a light jacket since the cave is around 60 degrees year-round.

Ruby Falls was the perfect mix of natural wonder, adventure, and family-friendly planning. We really enjoyed our visit and would add it to our list of must-see destinations in the Southeast.

Don’t Overlook Copper Harbor, MI: Plan an Epic Outdoor Family Vacation

Posted on |

So, you’re looking for that next family vacation idea? Copper Harbor, MI is one vacation destination you should not overlook. Ideal for families with active teens and pre-teens, Copper Harbor offers an epic outdoor adventure family vacation in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We brought our kids on a road trip and spent 6 wonderful days in Copper Harbor.

We discovered a friendly, quaint town set on the pristine shores of Lake Superior with world-class bike trails, hiking, gorgeous roadside parks, paddling in jaw-dropping beauty, and so much more. There are so many things to do in Copper Harbor, MI. It’s a spot like none other and we can’t wait to return. Bring the kids. You’re going to love it.

Things to Do in Copper Harbor, MI

Explore the Coast

Rocky beaches abound in Copper Harbor and so do the easily accessible roadside parks where you can enjoy them. You’ll want to spend some time soaking in the view and examining the extremely unique rocks along the shore. You’ll find agates with a variety of minerals and crystals trapped in volcanic basalt and other rocks.

We even purchased a small rock and mineral book at Grandpa’s Barn bookshop in town to help us learn what we were looking at.

These parks are all west of Copper Harbor and a very short drive from the town.

Copper Harbor, Lake Superior

Hunter’s Point Park

F4F5+WP, Copper Harbor, MI 49918

The red rocks that make up the beach at Hunter’s Point Park are stunning, and the power of Lake Superior is shocking on a windy day as the lake slams the huge conglomerate rock formations on the shore. On a warm day when the lake is calm, this would be a nice place to go for a little swim.

Devil’s Washtub in Copper Harbor

Devil’s Washtub is a rock formation on the coast of Lake Superior that looks remarkably like a giant bathtub at the bottom of a rocky cliff. It’s a short walk from the road to the washtub, along a large rock face. Devil’s Washtub is not a marked trail and it’s located on private property. The property owners have posted a sign that identifies the property as private and reminds guests to be responsible.

Where is Devil’s Washtub in Copper Harbor?

You’ll find the unmarked trail to Devil’s Washtub across from Dapple Gray B&B and Antiques.
13640 M-26, Eagle Harbor Twp, Michigan 49950

There is room on the shoulder to pull off the road and park. You’ll see several little trails. The trail closest to Copper Harbor will take you out to Devil’s Washtub, you’ll see the sign from the property owners reminding guests to be responsible. The other trails will take you to several other little rock formations and down to some pretty little rocky beach coves.

Hebard Wayside Park

F2HX+GR Eagle River, Michigan

Hebard Wayside Park has picnic and restrooms, located across the street, a rocky beach, and several rock outcroppings to explore. This is another place to examine some gorgeous rocks and enjoy the vast views of Lake Superior.

Esrey Park- Eagle Harbor

FW9V+F8 Mohawk, Allouez Township, MI

We visited Esrey Park on our last day in Copper Harbor. There are picnic facilities, a restroom, and another rocky beach. I liked the little trail walk along the rock ridge here, lots of places to see the beautiful lake views.

Biking Copper Harbor

The mountain bike trails in Copper Harbor are world-class. People come from all over for these trails. My husband and a couple of my kids had an amazing time biking. And, there are trails available for everyone.

Now for my biggest ever mom tip: If you haven’t been on a bike in more than a decade, do not let anyone convince you to come with them on an “intermediate” rated bike trail in Copper Harbor. There were tears and they weren’t from my kids, ok? Seriously, it was dumb and I’m lucky I didn’t get seriously hurt. The trails in Copper Harbor are hard (remember, world-class). My husband said the intermediate trail we tried was as hard as any black diamond he ever did at home.

Bikes at Keenaw Adventure

There are, however, nice easy gravel trails and comparatively flat-ish dirt trails toward Fanny Hooe and the Fort Wilkins Historic State Park area that I did truly enjoy. So, as much as we love to do things together on family road trips, this is one area where I’d recommend splitting up as ability allows.

Keweenaw Adventure Company in Copper Harbor rents excellent mountain bikes, so if you don’t have the ability to cart your own gear up there, they are an excellent option. Rentals are offered for 2 hours, 5 hours or all day. The fee depends on the type of bike you want to rent, but they start around $40 and go up from there.

Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park is the least visited national park in the lower 48 states. It’s an island and you’ll need to cross Lake Superior to get it. There are a few towns with boat and plane companies that offer to transportation to the island and one of them Isle Royale Queen IV is based on Copper Harbor.

Roundtrip fare on the Isle Royale Queen IV is $160 for adults and $115 for kids 15 and under.

Isle Royale Queen IV

The trip over will take about 3 1/2 hours. Many people camp or stay in the lodge on the island. Others choose to do a day trip from Copper Harbor while they are in the area. If you choose the day trip option you’ll have a 3 1/2 boat ride across Superior, about 2 1/2 to 3 hours on the island, and a 3 1/2 hour boat ride back. It’s enough time for a hike along beautiful trails with gorgeous coast views and opportunities to relax on the shore. You may even catch a glimpse of a moose!

Hiking in Isle Royale National Park

On the boat ride you’ll get to view both the coast of Copper Harbor, including the Copper Harbor Lighthouse, and the coast of Isle Royale. In the middle, there’s a lot of water. The boat has comfortable seating and tables and sells coffee and snacks. Plus, you can bring whatever lunch or other food you’d like. There are restrooms on board.

An Isle Royale day trip is a long day, but worth it in my opinion. Not too many people can say they’ve visited Isle Royale National Park and the views are magnificent.

Don’t forget the bug spray!

Paddling: Kayaks and SUPs

We brought our inflatable stand-up paddle boards from home and we enjoyed paddling on an inland lake, Lac La Belle, as well as along the coast of Lake Superior. But, if you don’t have your own boards or kayaks, you can also rent stand-up paddle boards from Keweenaw Adventure, as well as kayaks. They’ll even deliver them to the inland lake of your choice.

Lake Fanny Hooe is right in Copper Harbor, and there are a couple of other options nearby, too. These lakes are generally smooth and warmer than Lake Superior. They are often a much safer paddle than Superior offers.

If you want to paddle on Lake Superior though, you’ll need to bring your own equipment or join a guided tour that provides equipment. Rentals are for inland lakes only.

While paddling Lake Superior is extremely beautiful, the water is very cold and the wind and waves can change very rapidly. Hypothermia can be a real threat and paddlers should proceed with caution and only attempt a paddle on Superior when conditions are favorable and have contingency plans in place if conditions change.

For example, we drove the coastal road prior to our paddle and noted several places we could bail and get off the water. Then, I paddled our route with my older kids and my husband stayed behind. When he went out with our youngest, we planned for me to pick them up at the end of their paddle, rather than having them return. I knew their route and could follow them at several points on the coast in our van.

The water was 39 degrees, so, knowing the closest point to pick them up and keeping an eye on them was important.

Don’t forget life jackets and a waterproof whistle.

That said, we put in our boards at Hebard Park and paddled along the shore to Devil’s Washtub so we could paddle under the arch. It was stunningly beautiful.

Shopping

The town of Copper Harbor is not large, but there are a few very nice shops you should check out while you’re in the area. Here are two of my favorites!

Grandpa’s Barn

This bookshop has a wide selection of books on the area, as well as popular fiction and non-fiction for adults and kids. We picked up a book on agates and other rocks and minerals here, as well as a few other things to read on our trip. You’ll find this little gem in the barn behind the schoolhouse. The barn once belonged to the owner’s grandfather, hence the name.

Laughing Loon

The Laughing Loon has lots of unique gifts and products from local artisans, plus books, puzzles, plus a wide selection of t-shirts and the typical gift shop fare.

Where to Eat: Restaurants and Groceries in Copper Harbor

There are a few restaurants to fuel your adventure, and one grocery store in Copper Harbor. There are a number of places where you can scroll through a list of Copper Harbor restaurants, but here are the places we visited and enjoyed.

Jamsen’s Coffee and Bakery

On the dock in Copper Harbor is Jamsen’s Coffee and Bakery. It is the spot to be for your morning coffee, with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs facing the water. You can order coffee, plus donuts, pastries, muffins, and breakfast sandwiches.

Note: This used to also be a fish market. They no longer sell fish, but you’ll see that name pop up on maps and Google. Don’t let that confuse you.

Jamsen's Bakery and Coffee in Copper Harbor, MI

The Genny: Gas-Lite General Store

The Genny is Copper Harbor’s only grocery store. It’s well stocked with both staples and local goods. We picked up a few things for dinner here, got snacks for hikes and bike rides, and picked up some local beer. It’s a cute shop with friendly, funny staff. Prices were comparable to grocery stores elsewhere in the UP. So while you may want to pick up supplies are your way into town, you can definitely get anything you forgot and a whole lot more here at the Genny.

Brickside Brewery

Local beer and a food truck alongside the building serves yummy pizza, pitas, and pretzels is what you’ll find at Brickside Brewery. Super friendly people, and the food truck was a great option for lunch. The food was good, and we saved a little money over a regular restaurant because we didn’t need to tip a server.

Lake Effect Bar & Grill

Right across from the Keweenaw Adventure Company bike shop, Lake Effect has indoor and outdoor seating. After our bike ride experience, I declared a burger and a beer were next on the to-do list, Lake Effect Bar & Grill did not disappoint.

More in Copper Harbor

Does Copper Harbor offer more? Yeah, in the winter there’s downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The locals said the town does a good job keeping roads clear of snow and that winter is actually one of the most beautiful times to visit. I can’t comment personally on any of that, but I sure do hope we get to go one winter. Although, I haven’t cross-country skied in a couple of decades either. Let’s hope that goes better than the bikes. Fall colors would be stunning, too.

Tips for Traveling in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

  1. Keep your gas tank full. If you’re driving up through the UP to Copper Harbor, Michigan, your gas station options will spread out a little. The big-ish town in Copper Harbor is Houghton. Fill up there.
  2. Take your time, pull over when you see signs at bakeries with pasties. They are good, and a unique historically significant food for the Copper Country. Originally, an area full of mines, the pasties could be kept in miners’ pockets, kept warm, and eaten at lunch.
  3. Bring bug spray. Good bug spray. Wear bug spray. The mosquitoes were thick in June in the woods. They weren’t bad in town, but around our vacation rental and out on the trails, they were plentiful. Bug spray is good. Those burning bug-repellent sticks helped by the campfire at night, too. Don’t let this keep you from visiting Copper Harbor. I hate bugs, and even I think it was worth it!
  4. Ask. All the locals we met were eager to share their favorite spots on the Keweenaw Peninsula and recommendations.
  5. Don’t forget water shoes! The rocks are smooth but hard on your feet, and some of the inland lakes are a little muddy on the bottom.
  6. You will not have cell service in most places in Copper Harbor. Pro-tip is to use the wifi at Jamsen’s when you get your coffee to load directions to the park or the destination you plan to visit.

Are you or your kids wanting to get an ear piercing? Greenville, SC has some phenomenal piercing shops to go to. If you’ve got a little girl, chances are you’ve talked about piercing her ears or if she’s old enough to ask, she’s asked you about getting her ears pierced.

When we asked our readers where to get ears pierced around town, most of them said either the pediatrician’s office or a tattoo/piercings shop. Kids can drive real construction equipment at Dig ‘N Zone Theme Park in Sevierville, TN

Posted on |

Inside: A real parent review of Dig ‘N Zone Theme Park in Sevierville, TN with all the information you need to plan your visit. We went and have ALL the details.

There’s actually a place where kids (and adults) can ride and drive real heavy-duty construction equipment at Dig ‘N Zone in Sevierville, Tennessee. We checked it out and have all the details.

Thank you to Visit Sevierville for providing us tickets so we could write this review. All opinions are our own.

Dig 'N Zone diggers
The real deal

If your kids are obsessed with construction equipment or just want to try something new when you come out to Sevierville, TN, then the relatively new construction theme park, Dig ‘N Zone, is the place to try.

Watch! We played at Dig ‘N Zone

There are only a few such places that exist in the United States (the others are nowhere near Greenville) and have dozens of rides with real, heavy-duty equipment to both ride and operate. There are height requirements for many of the rides, but smaller kids can also ride on the laps of their parents, so even they can do many of the attractions.

Experiencing Dig ‘N Zone

Dig ‘N Zone is family-owned and operated, opened in early 2024, and is a rare and unique theme park because they let you actually ride and operate real heavy machinery.

It’s a park that is totally different than what you’ve probably experienced elsewhere. You’re not waiting to ride the rides (except for one crazy one) but rather you’re operating pieces of equipment: the excavators, backhoes, pavement rollers, and skid steers.

You’re not watching the action at Dig ‘N Zone: you’re a part of the action. And that’s really what makes this park unique. Plus, where can your kids operate construction equipment?

My kids and I liked doing the competition to knock down steel plates with a ball using a CAT 301.5. Driving the skid steer, which goes really slow, was fun because we’ve never done it before but my 10-year-old loved driving the big John Deere Gator (like a big golf cart). She did pretty well!

Dig 'N Zone skid
Practicing for her driver’s test

My girls and I (they are 14 and 10) also got a kick out of driving the toy Jeeps. We tried to race unsuccessfully, but nothing goes too fast. It was fun, though.

We never had to wait more than maybe 10 minutes at any given attraction, which was nice. You can check out the list of all the attractions here on the Dig ‘N Zone website.

We spent about two hours at Dig ‘N Zone and did most of the attractions plus got lunch.

Tips on Visiting Dig ‘N Zone

Here are a few tips you may find helpful when you visit Dig ‘N Zone:

Dig 'N Zone bikes
Racing is fun!

While there are some shaded areas, most of the park is out in the open. It’s important to wear sunscreen, have a hat, and hydrate often.

Look at the minimum rider heights before you go. Most of the height minimums are at least 42” and some as tall as 52” so be sure to look at them before going to make sure your kids can ride them. Many rides allow lap riders as well.

Bring your stroller if needed. Everything is paved and easy to navigate.

Guests cannot bring outside or drink (except an unopened bottle of water) but there is a cafe inside the park. They have burgers, pizzas, and a kids’ menu.

Check for specials.  See the theme park’s website and Dig ‘N Zone social media for current specials.

Honest Mom Review: Dig ‘N Zone

Looking for a Dig ‘N Zone Theme Park review? Here it is.
I had been wanting to go to this park since it opened because it was so different from anything I had ever experienced. I’m not someone who thinks construction equipment is super cool (although operating those heavy machines may change my mind) but I thought the park was really neat.

My kids really enjoyed it, especially when they got to drive and operate the equipment themselves. It was fun for me to join in with them as an adult, which I think is another thing that makes the park unique. It’s truly for all ages.

Dig 'N Zone ride
Doing the construction thing

I can’t even imagine what it cost to build Dig ‘N Zone. The massive investment of equipment, space, and insurance I’m sure is enormous. This is why the ticket cost is not inexpensive. If you have a kid who loves construction or big equipment, you and your kid will absolutely love this place. Or if you want to do something less crazy than the bigger theme parks but still have a lot of fun, this place would be fantastic.

Be sure to check out the gift shop. They have some really unique items for sale!

Tickets & Admission

Tickets are currently priced at $69/adults, $55/kids (ages 3-11), $55/ages 65+. You can add on a Turbo Pass, which puts you at the front of the line for the attractions, which costs an extra $49-$59/person.

There are other add-ons like crushing a small school bus or getting a gift bag that you can pay extra for when you get your tickets at the gate. Parking is free and plentiful.
